CAMP FOLLOWERS

The object of most Camp Followers is to make these Flyboys feel more… comfortable… and to earn a bit of pocket-change. While some call these girls “hussies” or even “loose women,” they are a favorite of many of Chipping Ongar’s Air Force boys. Some make the rounds for money, but others are just teenage girls excited to have a bit of a go with a handsome young American… either way, the camp-followers are an absolutely vital component of the base’s high morale!

TOWNSPEOPLE

Chipping Ongar is a fully functioning English town, and needs its citizens! Although Ongar is just twenty-five miles from London, the town was spared from most of the bombing, and enjoys increased protection from the base located immediately beside it. Shopkeepers, schoolchildren, clergy members, and even everyday housewives are needed! We’re looking for any and all positions within the town, and feel free to create your own shop for your character to run and operate!

MEDICS

There are only two medics on staff at Chipping Ongar, and their hands are certainly full. Both are commissioned soldiers with some background in medicine, though it is unlikely they are licensed doctors. The medics perform surgery, run autopsies, diagnose serious illnesses, amputate battle-torn limbs—the more serious cases in the Sick Bay.

NURSES

Almost any woman who enlisted in the US Army Air Force ended up here—the Nurses Corps. Nurses are women anywhere from eighteen to fifty, and quite a tough bunch. They have the task of caring for each and every patient that comes through the doors of the Sick Bay, distribute medication, change bandages, give baths, and put up with the seemingly non-stop catcalls of the “injured” and “ill” boys on base. These women have seen a lot, and have one of the hardest jobs on base.

AIRMEN

All boys who enlisted end up here! Most of the base is made up of Airman Basics, your average G.I. Not everyone can be a ranking officer or have a special position on base! Nothing would get done if it wasn’t for all of your basic Airmen! From here, soldiers can rise the ranks, though it is virtually impossible to become a ranking officer without the proper training.

SPECIALTY PERSONNEL

While most of your soldiers are GI’s, there are still important positions that need to be filled! Please see THIS list for ideas and a list of some specialty personnel we’d like to see on base. Pencil- pushers and office workers are extremely important as well!

Chipping-Ongar Air Base Locations

Officer's Club

A bit of luxury and leisure for the higher-ups on base, the officer's club provides tables for cards, a working bar, and seats and sofas more comfortable than the tin cans the airmen sit in. A working fireplace was installed in a jiffy, at the insistence of a few of the captains from California and Texas - not used to the cold English weather. Officers are also fed better-quality meals than enlisted men, and don't need to rely on the post exchange as much as the others. Officers took their meals apart from the enlisted men, in a separate mess hall. Accessible to: All Ranking Officers

Enlisted Men's Barracks

Sweet home away from home - or at least that's how the airmen try to feel about it. Each barracks is built into the standard nissen hut, consisting of ten bunk-beds on each side, space for forty airmen and their foot lockers and pinup posters in all. In the middle of the hut are three heaters, which do very little to heat the tin can in the cold British winters. There are two sinks and two latrines in each barracks, when the main latrine huts cannot be reached. Sleeping Arrangements for: All enlisted men, non-ranking officers

Officer's Barracks

Commissioned Officers all get their own private barracks and living arrangements, built into a smaller version of the classic nissen hut. They have one heater, one bed and one desk with a proper office chair, one sink and one latrine. However, for many - including the airmen who look on jealously, that's the life. Post Exchange

The great joy of the soldier's life is the post exchange, giving him smaller luxuries than those available to officer's in their OC, but luxuries nonetheless. He can buy tobacco, candy, beer, or other treats, but he can also get anything from a needle to a bicycle patch-kit. Every article which the Chipping-Ongar man needs or likes is on sale. There's all kinds of food, mostly put up in packages, a variety of cigarettes which would rival that of a city tobacconist, stationery, books, post-cards, toilet articles, and anything else they decide to ship on over. Two Mess Halls - Enlisted Men's and Officer's

The non-officer's mess hall serves slightly lesser-quality food to the enlisted men. However, after a mission up in the freezing cold, nothing satisfies quite like a hot meal - though many men think it's no better than pig slop. That's where candy from the canteen takes over. Naturally, the Officer's food is slightly higher quality. Cook: Available! Cook's Assistants: Three Available!

Base Hospital and Infirmary

Base doctors and nurses take care of everything from the flu to emergency surgeries. There are three huts converted into the sick quarters and hospital wing, each hut containing twenty-two beds. All Medical Personel

Offices and Administration

Not everyone can be up in the planes fighting. In fact, some of the most important operations on base take place in the offices. Administrative offices are where mail is sent out and sorted through, memos are released, records and files on men are kept, codes are broken, radio signals are relayed, and everything else other than the actual flight missions.

The base is surrounded by sprawling English fields and circled by a small stretch of woodland. The base, “rented out” from the Royal Air Force, is just a short walk from the center of town. Townspeople adore the visiting American soldiers—as do the town’s young ladies. It isn’t hard to find an open door and a home cooked meal.

Swallow Churchgate Hotel

Swallow Churchgate, built in the 17th century, hasn’t seen much business as of late, but its doors remain open nonetheless. Once a bustling country inn, Churchgate now serves as a sort of meetingground for RAF and USAAF meetings, when attendance is too high to fit back on base. Several rooms are also rented out by men for a night or two… and seeing a soldier wander in with a girl late one night and leave the next morning certainly isn’t unusual. Owner: Available! The Cock Tavern

The Cock Tavern is certainly the butt of many jokes, but the Chipping Ongar boys wouldn’t survive without it. The pub is stuffed with soldiers on any given night, luring boys in with free beers for servicemen and plenty of attention from attractive young English girls. Owner: Available! Budworth Hall - location of many USO dances

Budworth Hall is the center of social life in Chipping Ongar. There are weekly knitting classes for women, men listen to radio programs together on Saturday nights, and there are almost weekly dances held for townspeople and servicemen. Overseer: Available! King’s Trust Primary and Senior Schools

The school lies behind the Budworth Hall. It is single-storied, mainly of yellow brick and with a partly tiled, partly slated roof. An adjacent building, of green corrugated iron, was erected in 1913 to accommodate the children while the rebuilding took place. King's Trust is administered by 12 trustees, with the rector as chairman. Ongar County Secondary School was built by the Essex Education Committee at the north end of the town on the road to Dunmow and was opened as a senior school for the district in 1936. It accommodates 520 children. Headmaster: Available! Faculty: All Available!

St. Martin's Anglican Church

When the nissen hut-turned house of worship on base just isn't enough, many men come to St. Martin's on Sunday morning. It helps that nearly every family of Chipping-Ongar does the same, including the pretty English girls the men are always trying to get closer to. However, all other intentions aside, St. Martin's is a taste of home that many Chipping-Ongar men crave. Rector: Available! Other clergy members / volunteers at the church: All available!

USAAF Organization Structure

Airman: (single Air Force member)

Section: Two or more airmen can form a "section." Generally, the section is the place (duty section) where the person works. For example, the Administrative Section, or the Life Support Section. It's not absolutely necessary to have a "section." For example, many aircrew members and Security Forces (Air Force "cops") don't have a "section." Instead, they belong (as a group) to a "flight." In Air Force Basic Training, it's called an "Element." Each basic training "flight" is divided into four "elements," each with an assigned "element leader."

Flight: Two or more airmen can form a flight. Two or more sections can also form a flight. It depends upon how the Squadron is organized. There are three types of flights: Numbered, Alpha, and Functional. Numbered flights incorporate small mission elements into an organized unit. For example, flights in basic training are numbered flights. While in basic, you could be assigned to "Flight 421," for instance.

Alpha flights are components of a squadron and consist of elements with identical missions. Flights A, B, and C, of a Security Forces Squadron would be an example, or A, B, C of an F-16 Fighter Squadron.

Functional flights consist of elements with specific missions. The "Military Personnel Flight (MPF)" and the "Social Actions Flight" are two examples of functional flights.

Squadron: Two or more flights form a squadron. The squadron is the lowest level of command with a headquarters element (example, a Squadron Commander, or Squadron First Sergeant). In the Air Force, a squadron commander is generally in the rank of Lt Col (O-5), although smaller squadrons may be commanded by majors, captains, and sometimes even lieutenants. Squadrons are usually identified both numerically, and by function. An example would be the 49th Security Forces Squadron, or the 501st Maintenance Squadron.

Group: Two or more Squadrons form a Group. In the Air Force, Groups are usually based upon assignment of squadrons with similar functions. For example, the Supply Squadron, Transportation, and Aircraft Maintenance Squadron would be assigned to the Logistics Group. The flying squadrons would be assigned to the Operations Group. The Dental Squadron and the Medical Squadron would be assigned to the Medical Group, etc. Usually, Groups take on the number of the Wing they are assigned to. The 49th Logistics Group, for example is assigned to the 49th Fighter Wing, at Holloman AFB in New Mexico. The group commander is usually a colonel (O-6).

Wing: Two or more groups compose a Wing. There is only one Wing on an Air Force base, and the Wing Commander is quite often considered to be the "Installation Commander." There are two types of Wings: Composite and Objective.

Composite Wings operate more than one kind of aircraft. Individual composite wings can have different missions.

Premise!

PREMISE

The 387th Bombardment group of the Eighth United States Army Air Force
was among the best trained in the entire armed forces, and they knew
it. From the earliest days of training, they worked as one, relied on
one another, and when they finally landed on the 152nd air base in
Willingale, in the county of Essex, England, their "hats were in the
ring" - their test would begin on a Friday afternoon, June 25th, 1943.

In the heat of the second World War, the base named Chipping-Ongar was
right on the front lines. Southeast of London, the brave men would fly
into France and Germany, dropping their bombs into the arsenals and
railroad lines of the German army. Every day was a test of faith -
putting their hopes into eachother, their pilots and bombardiers,
their B-26 Marauder planes, and whatever fate had in store for them.
In the face of such danger, their only escape from the danger on every
side was themselves.

Of course, the base was blessed with a welcoming, supportive rural
English village only miles away. Schoolchildren "adopted" planes and
waved a greeting upon their return from combat. The pub opened their
doors, sometimes even offering free drinks and food for the servicemen
so far from home. Budworth Hall held USO nights with loud, brassy
music and beautiful girls to dance with. Even life on the base was
more relaxed, at ease, perhaps from their confidence at fighting with
such a highly trained unit, and maybe a bit of cockiness and
comraderie. Chipping-Ongar worked as one supportive group; maybe just
the slightest bit rowdy, but still respectful and reliable - and the
fate of the war in Europe was partly in their hands.

Of course, into each life, some rain must fall, and the men at
Chipping-Ongar also had their fair share of tragedy. Friends,
brothers, and partners were all lost in the fighting, or even
accidents on base. In the face of danger and loss, they knew better
than anyone that you only have your friends to fall back on, so far
from home, and perhaps the setbacks brought them all closer.

It's said that the first words spoken as the Group Commander stepped
onto the ground after the cross-Atlantic voyage were "Where are the
bombs? Let's go to war!"

TIMELINE

1 Dec 1942 – Group and squadrons activated

-- The 387th Bombardment Group, with its four member squadrons, the 556th, 557th, 558th and 559th, was activated.

Jan 1943 – Squadrons report for training to MacDill Field, in Tampa, Florida

-- Eyewitness: The greater part of the personnel, who had been recruited from OTU and BTU organizations, began, for the first time, to feel that they were to become part of a real combat unit. During the first phase of training, group headquarters was located temporarily in a two-story barracks. The 556th, 557th and 559th squadrons were billeted in the casual camp area, rather aptly called "Boomtown." In the shacks the men could look through the roof and see the sky, and look down through the boards of the floor and see the sand. Some mornings in January were cold but, in true Army style, heat was furnished only on warm mornings. Chow for the field mess was lousy, but could be supplemented by meals at the PX and soda fountains. Officers ate at the swank officers' club, but rates were not exactly cheap for newly made second louies.

8 Feb 1943 – Beginning of Second Phase training

23 Apr 43 – Group moves to Drane Field

-- By the end of the second week of April the group was nearing the end of second phase training. Since the third phase called for group operations by itself in cooperation with a service group, personnel of the 387th began packing technical and personnel equipment for their first move to Drane Field, near Lakeland, Florida.

-- Eyewitness: Shortly after the group arrived at Drane Field, the second phase of training was completed and the third began. Under Colonel Storrie's able direction the combat crews and ground personnel were becoming expert in their jobs, and accustomed to operations at any time or place.

During second phase training several pilots had become quite "hot" and were flying their planes rather low over the Florida terrain. One day Lieutenant Charles B. White, now Major White, came back with leaves and twigs caught underneath the fuselage, scratches and green stain from leaves under the wings. He told the crew chief to hurry and get the plane cleaned up and the scratches painted over. This the crew chief promptly accomplished. Soon Colonel Storrie came around the line to look over the planes and stopped critically before Lieutenant White's particular ship.

"Sergeant, what happened to your ship here with these scratches on it?"

"My pilot hit a bird, sir," answered the crew chief, loyally lying.

"Well, what caused this green stain underneath the wings?"

"Why, he hit a parrot, sir."

The colonel closed his jaw tightly and walked away.

Before leaving Lakeland the group, because of its fine record of training during this period, received a personal commendation from Brigadier General Parker, commanding general of Third Bomber Command, stating that the training record of the 387th was the finest yet done by any medium bombardment group.

Fri, 25 Jun 43 –387th Bombardment Group arrives at Chipping Ongar, England, located 9 miles west of Chelmsford between the villages of Willingale, Fyfield, High Ongar and Chipping Ongar. London lies approximately 25 miles southwest of station 152.

-- Eyewitness: On landing at Chipping Ongar the crews had found that the field was barely ready to receive them. The air echelon had arrived in such excellent time that the runways were only partially complete. When he learned that the 387th planes were at Prestwick, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Brown, commander of the 831st Engineer Battalion, had kept his men working far into the night of the two days preceding the planes' arrival in order to get the field ready for the landings. The hardworking engineers, who had spent eight months of rain and fog to get the field ready, admitted a feeling of satisfaction at the sight of sixty-five new B-26s dropping wheels on the field.

Although neither the runways nor the squadron areas were complete, the spirits of the men were high. After the ocean voyage ground and air crews alike were glad to be together again. Colonel Storrie expressed the feeling of the group when he said, "Where are the bombs? Let's go to war!"

Sat, 17 Jul 43 – Formal Dedication of the Field

-- Formal dedication of the field took place on July 17 with all units of the field taking part. A review of the various units was held with music by the 342nd Engineer's band. An aerial demonstration by thirty-six B-26s flying close formation followed.

Dec 43 - Jan 44 – Grounding Due to Poor Weather Conditions

-- Eyewitness: Since comparatively few missions were being run, it became possible for the men to enjoy the recreational facilities of the base. Day rooms had been set up in the different squadrons and beer made available. A good officers' club had been established in a large Nissen hut, and the enlisted men had the Aero Club available for doughnuts and coffee and for dances. Usually there were two large huts available for movies. The parties and dances were a most welcome change from the dreariness of the weather. Both officers and enlisted men, in the presence of American nurses and English girls, became party conscious.

Feb 44

Early in February there was a notable increase in the number of neckties being worn about the base. The arrival of four flight nurses, for the purpose of learning procedure in handling injured crew members, was probably just a mere coincidence

The Eighth Air Force begins "Big Week," attacks on German aircraft plants and airfields. For the first time, over 1,000 bombers are dispatched; 21 bombers and 4 fighters are lost hitting 3 areas in Germany...

Sat, 22 Jul 44 – Last Mission at Chipping Ongar

In France, weather prevents all combat operations except for 1 fighter group ... and the 556th, 557th, 558th and 559th Bombardment Squadrons, move from Chipping Ongar to Stony Cross with B-26s.

Rules of Chipping Ongar RPG

1. The game is played in THIRD PERSON, while journals are written in first.

a. Good: Marlene sat cross-legged on the floor, idly browsing through her friend’s worn records. “Have any Bing Crosby?” she asked hopefully.

b. Bad: *she sits and looks through records* Have any Big Crosby? *pouts*

2. The community is at a R rating.

a. No smut/NC-17 material. It’s fine if you want to write that, but please put it under a cut with a warning and do not post it in one of the main game communities. A thread/drabble/etc. like this will be allowed in character journals only.

b. Violence: happens. We have no problem with violence, but please make sure you ask another played before killing off their character :P

c. Relationships: happen. We’ll employ the “fade out” technique if a thread gets, er… a little physical :P When to “fade out” is up to the players, but please remember to keep it PG-13 in the main game community.

d. Language: Swearing is fine - after all, boys will be boys.

3. We have a 10% quota for homosexuals and bisexuals. We know this is a huge thing to do in RP, but we really want this to be a canon game. This was the 1940’s, a time in which gay people were NOT generally accepted. Sexual behavior between adult men wasn’t even decriminalized in Britain until 1967! We love gay people, we do, but it was very, very wrong in this era. Hitler was killing and experimenting on homosexuals just a few countries away! Anyone caught in a homosexual act—or even accused—would be sent home with a dishonorable discharge.

4. Don’t even think about a Mary Sue—or a Gary Stu, for that matter.

5. Godmodding. No, just no. Ask a player before and it’s fine, but please make sure you DO ask.

6. Please try to keep your posts at a decent length. One-sentence replies happen, but we ask that you try to stretch it out a little bit. Here at Chipping Ongar, we really love character development and quality writing, so try to keep your post-length minimum at about three or four sentences.

7. When starting a thread, use this format:

a. Date/ Time:

b. Who:

c. Where:

d. (CUT—post inside)

8. OOC =/= IC. Personal feelings toward a player should NOT reflect your character’s opinion toward theirs. Rivalries, friends, enemies—none of it should be based on ooc feelings. If you get offended because a certain character doesn’t like yours, we’re sorry, but there’s nothing we can do. The second it drips to ooc, though, let us know! Also, make sure you don’t bring OOC knowledge into the game. Just because you know about Buddy and Sue’s secret affair, you’re character probably doesn’t. If you want to work something like that out, ask the players if it’s all right. Sure, gossip happens, but please be careful.

9. Reading other applications and backstorying is a MUST. We ask that you read through most other profiles in the game and backstory with every new character that is accepted—it makes for more educated players, characters, and a well-informed game. Of course it’s fine if you miss one or two, but try to be diligent.

a. Backstorying works this way: as a new player, you make a ‘welcome’ post in the OOC community explaining who you are and who you’re bringing into the game. In that character’s journal, throw up their application so others can read about their personality, likes, dislikes, etc. Players will leave comments like this: “Hey! James would probably adore Mary, I think they could maybe even be best friends! What do you think?” Then you reply to that with, well, what you think :P Its really easy, FUN (I’m telling you, it is), and will make the game go a lot smoother.

10. Character journals are game canon, while what happens in the chipped community is not, unless stated otherwise. chipped is to be used for AU/future/past threads for fun, so they will be assumed to be AU unless it is stated that it is game canon.

11. Character journals are preferred, though general RP journals (one account used for a collection of characters) will be accepted as well.

12. Body models must be age— and ERA—appropriate. We reserve the right to reject a PB because it isn’t age or era appropriate, though it wont be a reason to reject the entire character. If one PB is taken and that player leaves the game, that body model is now free to use. If you need help finding a PB, ask! We’d be more than happy to suggest some for you, or send you great places to look.

13. Activity checks will be issued after ONE MONTH of non-activity. We’ll send along an e-mail asking if you’re still interested in playing and give you two weeks (unless you need more time for various issues) to get it happenin’ again. If not, we’ll have to cut your characters. You may reapply, but make sure you have the time/energy/desire/whathaveyou. HIATUS notices will most certainly be adhered to, but if you’re gone for a much greater amount of time than you said, we’ll send and email and remove your characters two weeks after.

14. Drama llamas are no fun. Be respectful, be nice, don’t cause trouble, all of that. If we hear lots of complaints, we’ll talk with the player, and if the behavior continues, we’ll have to remove him or her. But PLEASE don’t make us do this! :P
