Cosplay and Conventions
Alfred checked his appearance in the mirror one last time. After much coaxing he had gotten his cowlick to lay down flat. His normal glasses were in the pocket of the off-white frock coat he wore. Instead he wore a entirely different pair of half circle glasses. He spoke a few words. His attention was on how he said them. He repeated it to himself and then a broad smile broke across his face. The accent was perfect.

When he left the house he thought about how today was going to be a great day. Many of the nations would be in costume at the convention. They would never expect him to be dressed as non-American character. He had worked long and hard at everything, even going so far as to start speaking in the accent he had worked so hard to get rid of two hundred years ago. He would be hiding right under everyone’s noses and the wouldn’t realize it was him. He was positive that this year he would be the last one recognized and caught by Hungary and Japan.

He tossed a cricket ball up and down and caught it in his hands. He hadn’t really played since Arthur had banned him from competition for not being part of the British Empire. Now, when approached with the subject of cricket he would refuse to play or feign ignorance. The character’s passion for cricket was one of the reasons he picked this costume.

When he got to the convention center it was warm inside despite the air conditioning. The many bodies plus the sweater and frock coat he wore was part of the reason. He gave an inner laugh. No one would suspect that America would be dressed as the Doctor. They would expect him to be Captain Kirk or Naruto. Yes, he was very confident he would win this year.

When Arthur Kirkland saw the masses of cosplayers, he suddenly realised he may have blended in better with the crowd in his sorcery robes than the outfit he currently wore.

"Kiku, are you sure I chose appropriate attire? I feel awfully . . . out of place."

Japan paused a moment from his skilled photography of fellow con-goers to turn around and calmly snap one of England while his guard was down. Satisfied with the result, the eastern nation nodded. "Hai, Kirkland-san."

England paused a moment as they strolled by a window to get a glance at himself. He did look quite sharp, sporting a blue commodore's uniform dating to the early 1700s, and not much needed to be done in the way of appearance otherwise. He had doubted anyone would recognise him as Commodore Brandon Blake in the first place, which was fine by him -- but walking amongst the various science fiction and fantasy costumes made him feel almost uneasily bland.

"Ten to one America's dressed as Han Solo," Arthur scoffed. "That idiot couldn't be original to save his life."

"Ah, he's coming?" Of course, Kiku knew Alfred would be there. He just wasn't sure where or when . . . or as who. He felt England was still upset about America breaking into his house and making a proper mess of the attic, but also felt it better not to mention it. He peered around for Hungary, his eternal partner-in-stalking, with whom he'd exchange photos with when the con was over.

“Mattie,” Alfred called out to the teen near the artist alley. The figure turned around. Alfred felt vindicated when he recognized his sibling’s face. A quick gaze up and down let him take in the northerner’s attire. It was fairly nondescript. Dark pants, white shirt, vest and some other accessories are all that were used to make it up. Despite being simple, it was a spot on Han Solo cosplay.

“Alfred, is that you?” The violet eyes widened.

Alfred smiled. “I’m the Doctor. Pleasure to meet you.”

Matthew could not help but laugh. “I can’t believe you are even doing the accent.” He clutched his sides. It was too much. He had been relying on his invisibility field to prevent himself by being caught. Now, he might need to rethink his strategy.

“I am going to win this year!”

“A-Arthur!”

“Right, not even Arthur would recognize me.”

“No! Arthur is standing right there.”

Turning his head, Alfred saw Arthur in a British uniform. The first think that ran through his mind that Arthur didn’t know the difference between a convention and a reenactment. The second think was that he was going to be caught by Arthur dressed as the Doctor.

“I have caught you Alfred-san,” Kiku stepped in front of Matthew as he snapped photos. The Canadian was blinded by the camera flash.

“I’m not Alfred. I’m Matthew!” When he could see he looked around for his brother to prove his point. However, Alfred had vanished just as suddenly as Kiku had appeared.

Arthur crosses his arms as he looked Canada up and down. "What did I tell you, Kiku? And blimey, Alfred, claiming to be poor Matthew! That's a new low, even for you."

"His prediction of your costume was accurate," Japan said calmly as he took one last picture. Just as his flashes ceased, a whole new barrage of lights fell upon Canada, rivalling the ones Kiku had blinded him with.

"I've been looking for you, America~" Was Hungary's gleeful exclamation as she took photos that would put paparazzi to shame. "Where's that brother of yours?"

"I-I a-am that b-brother of h-his!" Matthew desperately tried to explain.

"Honestly, must you always be so cruel to him?" England glared at the younger nation, then froze as they made momentary eye contact. Alfred's eyes were blue, not violet. "Oh, my--Matthew, I'm so sorry--"

"How can you even tell?" Hungary frowned.

Alfred felt like he had been just a little bit cruel on leaving his brother, he quickly pushed it aside. It was every nation for himself at these conventions. When he had spotted Arthur he had slipped into a group of Doctor Who cosplayers. It worked very well except he now had an overly affectionate Ten to deal with. Still, it could have been far worse.

Loud and fast footsteps caught up with the group. He resisted the urge to turn and look. Hungary ran right past him without a second glance in a combat maid outfit. She ran full tilt to a trio of Final Fantasy X-2 cosplayers. There was a moogle Yuna, a white mage Paine and a dark knight Rikku. When given a second glance he realized that the Paine was Ukraine and the Rikku was Belarus. Alfred got a slightly sick feeling in his stomache when the Yuna took off the costume’s head to reveal a smiling Ivan underneath.

He quickened his pace as he moved with the other Doctors.

It took Matthew some time to decide whether or not to betray Alfred to the other nations. On one hand, he had been left to be blamed for America's shortcomings and once again endure the wrath for it, but on the other, he wasn't sure he wanted to help out the people who couldn't tell the difference between the two of them. In the end, he compromised.

"He--He was here a moment ago. He's i-in a g-group, now. He, um . . . w-wanted his o-outfit to be a su-surprise." Canada stepped aside as Russia came closer to him.

"Speaking of which," Hungary said as she looked England up and down, "who are you supposed to be?"

Arthur shook his head and began to scan the crowd for blonde-hair, blue-eyed teenagers.

Alfred was having fun with the other cosplayers. They were often asked to stop and pose for pictures. It was better camo then he had hoped for. He had his picture taken by several nations and they hadn’t given him a second look. As long as he kept his head tilted just right the brim of his hat would obscure his face but would still make a nice picture.

“Hurry, Arthur-san,” a male voice yelled out loud enough for Alfred to hear, “a young man matching his description entered the dealer’s room. Help me search it for him.”

Alfred was in the dealer’s room. If Kiku started from one end and Arthur started from the other they would catch him in between them. He was going to have to be sneaky about this. His blue eyes swept his surroundings and narrowed on the most unlikely thing they would expect America to be looking at: the doujinshi stand. He side stepped from his group and put himself in front of the man selling fan comics. They were mostly yaoi and that did not interest him at all, still Kiku wouldn’t think to look for him at this stand.

He began randomly moving through the boxes of assorted fandoms. Most of it was yaoi. Then a single volume caught his attention. It was a Sailor Moon x Cutie Honey yuri comic. He began to look at it with something approaching interest. Two cool female superheroes being slashed together was far cooler to him then two pansy singers.

"Right then, Kiku," Arthur said, a military tone coming over his voice. "We'll sweep the room. You start on the north end; I'll start on the south. If you find him, grab him and don't let go."

"Hai." Kiku nodded sharply and stepped to.

England wasted no time in searching the room thoroughly. He would stop every blonde-haired teenage male he found, and quickly turn them away when he found no resemblance to his former charge. He had just begun to realise how obsessive he was acting when a cosplayer sorting through doujinshi caught his attention. Arthur took a moment to admire the sheer amount of detail that went into the costume, right down to the blonde hair . . .

"Excuse me," Arthur said as he tapped the Fifth Doctor on the shoulder. He wasn't expecting an American accent, but he refused to leave any stone unturned.

Alfred had found a few more fan comics that looked interesting. He would have to apologize to Kiku. Not all of these were about two guys romancing each other, just most of them. Some of these actually seemed like they were interesting. He had found three that looked to be funny and one that was going to explore an unknown point in the life of one of his favorite characters. While mentally calculating how many more he would need to find to get the special, he felt a light tap on his shoulder.

"Excuse me," a very familiar voice with a well known clip to it said.

Arthur had found him! Alfred had not lasted anywhere near as long as he thought he would. Before he could panic he reminded himself that it was possible that Arthur did not yet realize who he was. If he kept his cool, he might still make it out of this predicament.

“Yes, may I help you, sir?” He used the top secret accent he had been practicing in secret. As he spoke he turned his head so it wouldn’t seem like he was hiding his face. The brim of the hat would still be partly obscuring it.
