Maybe they flew too close to one of those giant wind turbine things muggles keep building up everywhere? I read somewhere once that when bats fly too close to them, the change in air pressure causes their lungs to explode (Sorry..I know that's gross). Maybe something similar could have happened to these birds?

It really is quite horrific though regardless of the cause.
