++Entry Post: All players are expected to make an entry post or RP thread with another character (in the main community, not character journals) within one week of getting accepted to theblackforest as part of the application process.

++Character Profiles: Once you've been accepted, be sure to update your user profiles. There is a generic profile layout that that is set up for your use. Just fill in the requested information. You must put up a profile and post an introduction for yourself and character in blackforestooc in order to complete the application process.

++Character Limits: Generally, players are limited to Four characters in the game. After the player has been established as a strong member of this community, providing plot movements, and exhibiting a good, well-rounded RP style, as well as helping new members adjust to the game’s atmosphere, they may make a formal request to the moderators for two additional characters. This leaves players with a total number of Six characters in theblackforest.

IMPORTANT PLACES

The Piper's Castle

The Castle, located just on the other side of the Giggling Brook from The Village, is where a number of enchanted creatures and Village residents live. And though it is the home of the Pied Piper, many others seem to have made it their home as well. Here there are often grand parties and people always seem to be coming and going without much rhyme or reason. And sometimes, it is said, the castle's suits of armor are spotted going out for midnight strolls with the resident spirits of the castle. Strange, it seems, does not even begin to cover the goings-ons of The Castle.

The Abandoned Mill

Between the Village and Handel's Tears (but closer to the Village) stands a mill once known as "Timothy's Enchanted Mill". However, the mill has been long abandoned and is now the home of many odd and unusual ghosts. Timothy still lives there (in a manner of speaking), of course, and seems to be more than willing to run the mill for anyone who wanders in. The only problem is that the building has falling into quite the state of disrepair.

Village Way

Village Way is the road that connects The Village to Handel's Tears. Exactly halfway between the two places is a large post holding three signs. One sign says "Left", one says "Right", and the other says "Just spin in a circle until you fall." The third sign seems to make little sense, but it is only fair, we suppose, that a third choice is offered if the other two aren't acceptable.

The Village

Located deep in the Black Forest, The Village is an idyllic home to enchanted creatures, witches, fairy tales, and charmed people that seem to have lost their way…and found something born of dreams. A few places that can be found in The Village are…

Humphrey’s Humble, Happy Pie

The local inn, located on Blind Mice Way, is the best place for anyone to find a warm dinner and a pint to drink. Besides these, Humphrey's menu is full of delightful treats as well, like gingersnaps and gumdrops. In fact, it is widely believed that if you can think it up, Humphrey can whip it up. Odd, but then what isn’t around here?

Gingerbread Field

To the south of The Village is a field where mice and children go to play. The field is populated by large gingerbread cookies that look rather like children, or at least as much like children as giant gingerbread cookies can. Some of the villagers whisper that it was the work of one of the witches, while others say it was just another of the wonders that makes up the Black Forest. Or maybe it is a bit of both. Either way, it is on the way to Handel’s Tears.

The Wishing Well

In the middle of the Village Square is an old wishing well. The well's paint is faded and its little roof sags while a bucket and rope sit to the side, worn with disuse. There are two old, faded signs nailed to the well. One reads “A pence for a wish,” and the other “A wish for a pence.” No one really knows what that is about, though no one is sure they can trust a cryptic well either.

Sigfred’s Royal Emporium

While ‘Royal’ might be a bit of an overstatement, Sigfred’s Emporium is the largest shop in all of the Village. Inside, it contains wonders upon wonders…and the largest collection of socks that one could ever wish for. In fact, there is one sock of every color, size, and shape. Some are even multiple colors, too. But the most unusual fact is that…well, no two socks are exactly alike. As one might imagine, this makes finding a match rather trying at times.

Patty Pennyton’s Potent Portables

Patty has a vial for anything you need, save a few that are quite illegal. She has a potion for singing, a potion for love, a potion for flowers, rain, clouds, and snow. Why, she even has a potion that can turn anything to gold. Very useful, they say, except for the part where it only lasts for about a day. Oh well, at least you’d know what it was to be richer than a king...for a little while.

Max’s Marvelous Mouthfuls

Max used to work for Humphrey back in the day, until he decided that his Steak Pie was far better. Soon enough, they were splitting ways and Max started his own Inn right across from Humphrey’s. Outside Max's building is a large gingerbread sign that reads in bold icing: “Humphrey hates cats, and my Pies are twice as delicious.” Though if it is true or not might be debatable.

Handel's Tears

Handel's Tears is a run-down collection of sad homes and shops about a twenty minute walk from the Village's main area (That is, it is about 2 1/2 miles away). The sun never seems to shine here as the area is always blanketed with a thick fog. It is a stark contrast to the merriment of the Village. But there are some things that one can only find here.

Witches’ Cove

This is a place where only the seedy go; a place where the wicked witches and ill-meaning come together to whisper plans in the dim candlelight. Witches’ Cove is one such place, unclean and unwelcoming…only the brave and wicked tread here. Still, if one wanted an ale, they say it is the best place. As long as you ignore the cockroaches that might crawl from your mug and up the next guy’s arm. It is important to note the fact that despite its name, Witches' Cove is nowhere near water. Apparently, Albert simply fancied the name.

Madame Malefica's Myriad Magics

Madame Malefica is a malicious sort. She takes particular pride in turning innocent apples into poisonous tricks. Some put people to sleep, and some make people do whatever you wish. They are interesting and varied, and rather lacking in flavor too, if we might add. But that seems to stop few in trying to slip their apple delights into the hands of their targets in hopes of bewitching them. A shop as dark as this one is not located in the village, but may be located by those intrepid enough to seek it in Handel's Tears.

The Marsh

Near Handel's Tears is a place simply called 'The Marsh'. This uninspired name is not the only thing that seems rather out of place about this mundane area, but the fact that no animals seem to ever dwell near it either is a bit odd. Well, there are the crows, but they don't count...do they?

Caddie's Callous Crows

Caddie's shop is located in Handel's Marsh, though she often takes to wandering up and down Village Way trying to sell her crows to anyone willing to buy. The crows, she insists, are good for sending messages, stealing things, and even spying on anyone you want to spy on. She's been known to claim they are good for divination if you'd like to cut them open.

Names for characters

Baby Names World - A great resource for roleplay names. As well as names, it also gives meanings and origins, so if you're looking for something specific, it's worth a look.

The Name Generator - If you're looking for an certain types of name for one of your character, this resource has several pages linked for such purposes.

Roleplay Names Generator - Randomly generates 50 names. You have the option to be serious, funny, fantasy based, and several others. Sometimes it is just fun to see what you come up with.

Icons/Character PBs

find_a_pb - Got a character in mind but can't think of someone to play them? This community is for you. Describe the basic outline of your character, any specifics (if you want someone with dark hair and blue eyes, for example) and other members will suggest people to you.

find_icons - Have a PB in mind, but can't seem to find icons (or the right icons) for the character? Try this community! Just look though the tags, and if you still don't see what you are looking for just make a request post. Someone might offer to make you some, or they know of a secret stash of gold.

pb_updates - Another good place to find possible PBs. Just scroll through the mega list and who knows what you might find.

embargo - Much like pb_updates, you can search by actors or by specific features such as hair. Have to join before you can see the full listing, but it is open membership.

pbsbyariel - A small list, but good base icons. Well worth a look, particularly if you are looking for faces less mainstream. Also check out her LJ, which has the same name. She is a personal favorite of the mod's.

sodamaged - Another favorite of the mod's, another small but growing source for icons. She takes request, and as long as you can provide her with resources, she's usually willing to do some work. If you ask nicely. (She also has an IJ account: sodamaged_icons)

Hollow Art - Former Livejournal-based icon community that has gone web-based! Use the tags to navigate, though dialup users beware! The list is very long and takes many prisoners.

nodamnorder - If all else fails, try No Damn Order. Stock icons are made by request, and request are pretty easy to make- as it is also run by one of the blackforestmod team. Just drop her a line there, with how soon you need them, and she'll get back to you right away.

Coding/Layouts/Profiles/Anything else

rp_tutorials - This is a wonderful resource for just about anything RP wise. Be it profile layouts, tables, or color guides. These guys have it all just about covered, and if they don't? Ask! Everyone there is friendly and welcoming. This mod would willingly give some of them her first born. Honestly.

Other Games

- The Crescent City Institute of Magic has a long history of educating the best and brightest Witches and Wizards in the United States. Located on the grounds of an old plantation near New Orleans, CCI has a culture shaped both by its students and faculty, as well as by the close proximity of New Orleans itself.

- Think of any long-gone deity from mythology. Imagine they once truly existed. Now imagine that they aren't truly gone but instead their essence lives on, is reincarnated inside of that guy who sits next to you on the bus every day. Or Maureen from Accounting. Or maybe even you. They could be anyone, young or old, male or female, any race, anyone.

RULES

This is a Role-play community for adult, mature players. Anyone that continually breaks the rules will be asked to leave by a moderator. And considering there are not very many, and all are fairly easy...I should hope there would be little reason to ask someone to leave.

BE ADULTS

If you're not one, pretend. The moderators are not parents, nor do they wish to be anytime soon. If you have a problem with another player, attempt to settle it with them in a civil manner. If you feel uncomfortable doing this, or feel you can not reach agreement, bring the problem to a Mod. If you have an issue with a Mod, bring it to their attention, or the attention of another moderator. They don't bite.

ABOVE ALL, UTILIZE COMMON SENSE

Be responsible role-players. Know that actions have consequences, good and bad. In Character Actions = In Character Consequences.

BEFORE YOUR CHARACTER

…maims, kills, or otherwise severely affects another player's ability to play their character you should ask permission from that player.

AGE 16 OR OLDER

Due to adult content in the form of violence and implied sex, this community is 16 or older. All members are to send an age statement to the moderators. All threads containing Graphic Sex shall not be posted in the community. Please contain that to the character journals.

INACTIVITY

Regular play is encouraged and expected in the community. We understand that not all members have boundless free time to devote to the game; however, we would like to see as much character involvement as they can manage. If a character is completely inactive for more than one month the character will be removed from the game and the PB put up for the use of other players. To rejoin the game you will need to post your application again. If you are sick, injured, or otherwise unable to get online for any length of time, but would like your character(s) held, please contact a moderator with a short explanation of why. Please note that extensions are made on a case-by-case basis, and there is no promise that one will be given.

A) Please note: If there is a continual pattern of inactivity, you will be asked to discuss any issues you might have with the moderators. This is to see what changes can be made to help the player become more involved or decide if this is or is not the right game for them.

B) Players also should not leave a thread for more than a week without replying. After one week of inactivity in a thread, the held up players may move their characters on with a brief explanation of how the meeting ended.

Non-Player Characters'S

Non-Player Characters (NPCs) are acceptable, but on a limited bases. There should be no more than one or two NPCs for any player that will be in common usage, or re-occurring. Please do not use any fairy tale figures as your NPCs, however, nor any of the figures listed as 'mod run npc'.

RESPECT YOUR FELLOW PLAYERS

No flaming on the board. Tact is the key to any open OOC Discussions on RP style or problems. Names and characters should NOT be brought up. If you have a particular problem with another player that cannot be worked out between the involved players, then bring it to a moderator.

CHARACTER PROFILES

Players are to update their user profiles as directed on the application page. This is for our sanity as well as the other players' and your own.

PREMISE

Deep within the Black Forest of Germany lies a village, hidden from the modern world by magical means, built by fairy tale creatures of all sorts. Here you will not find anything of the modern sort; no guns, no internet, no cellphones, and no television. The homes are made of wood, except for those that are actually made of gingerbread (though no one remembers why and how this trend started). The streets are mostly dirty, though the village center has cobbled roads. At the center of it all is a rather large, run-down wishing well.

Magic is present, though a bit peculiar. It seems as if everyone has one supreme talent, or gift, that no one else shares. Some are great, some are small, and there really seems to be no rhyme or reason to any of it. Beyond these talents, there is no lack of magic in world, what with talking toads, flying witches, mischievous fairies, and unnumbered magical creatures.

The realm is ruled by the Pied Piper who is peculiar and strange in his own way. He rules fairly, though there are suggestions that he sometimes looks the other way when the dark factions of his realm raid the real world...or even the village residents. It is also rumored that the gingerbread children were his gift to the witches in exchange for the magical wards that hide the village away.

Sometimes, new people appear in the village, claiming to have been called there by music that only they could hear. When they arrive they find themselves posed with this question: “Are you good...or are you bad?”

Whatever they choose, everyone tends to take up residence at the Piper's castle, where they learn the strange ins and outs of The Black Forest. And those who choose otherwise find themselves in a place outside of the village called Handel's Tears where a cluster of dark, gloomy houses dwell. There, they have the choice…make yourself useful, or the witches will find a way to do it for you.
