Insanity: So, for those of you who missed it. We're going to take a week for each day in the homecoming week of September 17-22 because there are seven really cool ideas that can get crazy if we have the time to do it in. So here we go! Week one!

Winter Carnival

Summary: Three days of winter celebration

It's time for the winter carnival! The grounds were covered in fluffy snow, nearly all of it being artificial but being in the mountains there was just the tiniest amount of real snow. It was chilly enough to keep the snow from melting all weekend as well. Snow people, snow flakes, hot cocoa stands, and snow balls dot the land.

King's Hall is decorated in snow flakes, with blue and silver as the main two colors. The ceiling had been charmed to look as though snow flakes were falling from it and all weekend little tables were set up with snacks and drinks. Staff monitored the party and mingled through the crowd while aurors were stationed on the outsides of the building. It was a strange mixture of surveillance and festivities.

Young, inexperienced, and a bit soft at the core, he doesn't seem like obvious leadership material and there are serious doubts going around the school about his ability. She used to watch the sky every night with her father while they waited for her mother to come home from her missions in space. Advanced Herbology/ Shenandoah Head of House: Sawyer Gray It was a surprise to see Sawyer show up on campus so soon after her mother's death but after speaking with Ichirou it was clear that the fiery woman would take her mother's position at the school. Transfiguration/ Honor Society: Cordelia Haines Cordelia is eerily in tune with the people around her. Some wonder if she doesn't have second sight. Nice and understanding as she is though, it's not wide to cross her. Potions/ University Quodpot Coach: Kiera O'Reilly Kiera is a second generation American, both sets of her grandparents were muggle Irish immigrants who had moved to NYC. She grew up in NYC surrounded by muggles and was the only one of her family to show magical ability. Latin/ Dance Coach: Mei Overstrum Growing up in a bilingual household, language always came easy to Mei. Muggle Academics/Studies/ Muggle Sports: Paul Richards Fun, hysterical, and boistrous, Paul Richards grew up in a mixed muggle/wizard family. His love of both communities lead him to his career as a muggle studies professor in a magic school. Defense Against the Dark Art/ Roanoke Quodpot Coach: Simón Rodriguez Simón Rodriguez, the older brother of César Rodriguez, was always known for his light hearted pranks in Blue Ridge's halls. Herbology/ Garden Club: Otieno Toure Otieno is one of the most laid back professors on staff. He's been at the school for years and blares reggae music from the green house every day. Ancient Rune/Arithmancy: Aiko Aomori Aiko Aomori is not the easiest of people to understand and she's a little bit of a hardass, she mumbles a lot and has a thick Japanese accent. Cultural/Ritual Magic/ Shawnee Quodpot: Matthew Chen Matthew was a foreign exchange student to the US when he was in high school. He had a bit of cultural shock jumping into an American school system but it spurred an interest in culture and ritual. Art/Magical Crafting/ Art Club: Flora Daniels Flora is a world traveller, after having graduated from University she went on a back packing trip that lasted for three years and she supported herself solely by painting and and crafting magical artifacts. Wands length: Wands range in length from 7 - 16 inches long. Wand length does not necessarily indicate the height of it's wizard.

Wand flexibility: Wand flexibility has nothing to do with how powerful the wand is, it's more a characteristic of the wand wood and how the wizard and the wand work together.

Wand woods: Wands are made of a plethora of woods. Here is a list of wand woods that are used, if you would like to use a wood that is not listed, by all means use it!

Acacia: Acacia wood is used in many cultures in rituals, it has powerful meaning pertaining to healing, sacrifice, and protection. Acacia wands do very well with healing and ritual magic.

Alder: Though alder trees have been viewed auspiciously in the past due to legends about "bleeding" and "weeping" alders, they still make powerful wands. They are especially good wands for wizards with an eye for divination.

Apple: Apple tree wood is both a wand for scholars and naturalists alike. It is powerful for nature magic relating to both the environment and to animals.

Ash: Has slight dark leanings but does well with charms.

Bamboo: Though bamboo wands are rare, they make excellent wands for astronomy students and Appalachian students alike.

Bay Tree: Bay tree wands do well with divination, healing, and cerebral magic.

Birch: Birch wood makes for the quintessential light wood wand. It is excellent with protection spells and will produce a strong patronus.

Blackthorn: A hard wood that will bond to a wizard who is not easy to break. These wands bond to wizards who are brave and never back down.

Cedar: Both good for cerebral and protective magics.

Ceiba bark: An African import wood, most ceiba wands made in the US are of the bark which makes a powerful wand for a wizard or witch skilled in the art of potions. Ceiba trunk wands are dark magic wands though and not for sale in the US, that is not to say they are impossible to get, through trade on the black market, a wizard might stumble across one.

Cherry: A happy wand wood, a cherry wand will usually bond to a romantic at heart, someone who is interested in romance, love, and domestic magic.

Chestnut: A good wand for transfiguration and defensive magic.

Cypress: In mythology, cypress is the symbol of death and the immortal soul, nevertheless it makes an excellent transfiguration wand.

Dogwood: A hard wood that often associates with wizards who have a violent streak.

Elder: Perhaps one of the most powerful wand woods, it comes packing with a punch and backfires spectacularly. It takes a lot of patience to work with this wood.

Elm: Elm is a good all around wand wood and is particularly good with charms.

Hawthorn: A very hopeful wood, hawthorn has always had special ritual meaning in many religious rituals for thousands of years. It will bond to a wizard who will shed the light of hope in even the darkest times.

Hazel: Hazel usually denotes a witch or wizard with a powerful connection to divination though they are also very good at light magic and protection spells.

Holly: A powerful defensive wand, it's ability to cast out dark spirits is what makes it a sought after wand wood.

Hornbeam: A powerful yet stubborn wood, hornbeam will give as much fight as the wizard wielding it has. It takes patience to become good with a hornbeam wand but is well worth it.

Ivy: A deceptively strong wand wood, ivy finds it's strength in transfiguration and defensive magic.

Laurel: The wand of champions, many quodpot and quidditch players find themselves in the possession of a laural wand.

Lime tree: Lime or linden wood makes for a powerful DADA wand and as it is prepared ritually, it responds well to wizards who also do well in ritual magic.

Mahogany: Makes for a lovely all around wand, a sort of jack of all trades.

Maple: A good wand wood for transfiguration and an all around good wand wood.

Oak: A solid wood, oak is good for charms and protective magic.

Olive tree: A very peaceful wood, olive wands tend to find their way into the hands of gentle hearts.

Poplar: Though it is physically a light wood, it has powerful leanings with the dark arts.

Rosewood: A beautiful wood that usually associates with artists and musicians.

Rowan: A scholars wand, rowan wood usually associates with wizards who have an eye for the more logical arts such as arithmancy, astronomy, or ancient runes.

Vinewood: A tricky wand, vinewood takes patience and time but in the end will become a powerful wand that works well in stressful situations.

Walnut: Versatile and solid, walnut makes an excellent all around wand and is excellent for healing magic.

Willow: Makes for the strongest healing wands and is also quite powerful at warding of dark spirits.

Yew: Makes for a powerful transfiguartion wand though some believe it has dark leaning because of it's poisonous sap.

Wand cores: Wands always have at least one magical substance at it's core. The core of the wand has a very powerful effect on the magic that will be performed by the wand and will influence the character of the wand. Some popular cores are but are not limited to: dragon heart strings, phoenix tail feathers, thestral tail hair, unicorn tail hair, and veela hair

The League of American Wizards (LAW): Similar to the Ministry of Magic. Located in Washington DC.
Georgia Association of Wizards (GAAW): A branch of LAW governing Georgia's wizards. Located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Bluebell Town
Bluebell Town is a quiet mountain town tucked away in the Blue Ridge mountains. It is a safe and secluded home to Georgia's wizards and is full of shops that supply and entertain the townspeople and the student body. There are several restaurants and households tucked away in the town.

Bertrum's Books
A book shop stuffed with all imaginable kinds of books. From magical to muggle and anything in between. The shop itself is unorganized to all except for it's owner Bertrum Bulby. Amid the chaotic piles he can find any book he is asked to find within minutes.

Bluebell Park
The park is at the town's center. It's a sizable park with a gazebo, a few picnic tables, a small pond, and a few ice cream truck vendors.

Cosmic Lanes
A bowling alley that offers midnight bowling on Friday and Saturday nights.

Dino's Diner
Twenty four hours a day, Dino's Diner has been serving inexpensive diner food to the community for twenty years now. It's home made Southern cooking at it's best.

The Dive
Despite the name, The Dive is a popular bar among the University students and the some of the younger crowd. Mixed drinks, cheap draft beer, and pub food.

Georgia Athletics
Sports equipment store mostly for quidditch and quodpot. They are responsible for supplying custom uniforms, t-shirts, and hats for Blue Ridge School and University.

Happy Little Cupcakes
Cupcakes, cakes, breads, baked goods, and sugar candies are prepared by a former student of the culinary school and a small group of magical bakers, many current culinary students are given internships and part time jobs here. Customers can make special requests in advance. Parents of students have been known to order birthday packages for their students while they are away.

Mike and Carl's Place
A coffee shop that opens early and stays open late. From straight up black coffee to fancy coffee drinks they brew the best. And you can never just have coffee, they make muffins, coffee cake, and order in fresh baked goods from Happy Little Cupcakes.

Mountain Top Apartments
Mountain Top Apartments is a quaint apartment complex in town that is home to younger townsfolk and some of the third and fourth year University students. Apartments are 2-3 rooms with one bathroom, a kitchen, a sizable living room, a screened porch or balcony depending on the floor, and several closets. The community has access to a swimming pool, a business office, and a small work out room.

Mountain Wands Emporium
A local wand shop that makes it's own wands and imports wands from other wand shops across the country. They also import from Canada and Europe if there is a special request.

P&H
A wizard's pharmacy. They carry all your pharmaceutical needs, potions, and herbs.

Quills
Quills is a Blue Ridge school run shop. Here students can find all their school needs. Quills, parchment, cauldrons, bottles, hoodies, wizard made lap tops, art supplies, and anything else they might need for the school year.

Rags and Things
A locally owned clothing shop that carries robes, school uniforms, and street clothes.

Super Nerds
A comic book shop that sells both muggle and magical comic books. The shop is run by two quirky nerds, Angie and Phil, best friends in nerdom. They hold tournaments on Saturdays, each tournament is posted at the beginning of the week and they vary from table top to video game.

The Alchemist
A micro-brewery, pub, and family restaurant. The Alchemist offers hot pub food, cold drinks, family entertainment, and pub quizzes every Thursday night from 7pm-9pm. There is open mic night on Fridays and karaoke on Wednesdays.

The Bluebell Zoo
Magical and muggle creatures are kept here in humane conditions and magical structured habitats keep them happy and give them a little piece of home.

The Green House
The herbology shop which supplies herbs, magical seeds, and gardening supplies.

The National Museum of Wizard History
A museum that covers the history of wizards in America. There are many school trips here and a student discount.

Puppies and Owls
A pet shop that supplies not only a selection of school sanctioned familiars but pet supplies as well. They also have a supply of pygmy puffs.

Spectre Theater
The local penny theater that was restored in 1990. They only play wizard movies and all the seating is vintage theater.

Blue Room Art Gallery
A local art gallery that puts on a student art show every spring for Blue Ridge school. There is a student discount for Blue Ridge.

The Play House
A magical fun center for students and adults alike. At the Play House one will find cheap pizza and beer, magical arcade games, indoor mini golf, and other fun activities for wizards.

The Sugar Shop
An ice cream parlor and sugar candy shop. With over twenty home made and unique flavors there is something for everyone. Hard ice cream, soft ice cream, yogurt, custard, sundaes, and malted milkshakes, and sugar snacks, this is the perfect place to end a hot day in the sun.

WE
The best in wizard entertainment. Wizard made CDs, vinyl, movies, video games, and posters. Anything pop culture, WE has it.

Fort Nox
The Wizard jail in Bluebell Town.

Dragon's Den
The shadiest place in Bluebell Town, a tattoo parlor that stays open 'til the wee hours of the morning and after midnight they rarely ever check ID especially if you have the cash to pay.

Quidditch

Quidditch is a game from HP canon. It is a game played on brooms between two teams of seven players. It is not as popular in the US as it is in Europe so there are only two teams at the school. Every other Saturday is a quidditch game, the first game of the month is always against the other magical schools with quidditch teams. The second game is a home game, team one against team two.

Cheerleading
Each house has their own cheerleading squad. Each team has a cheering captain who is an upperclassman (11-12) who schedules practices and teaches the other cheerleaders. There have never been cheer coaches. The teams switch off who cheers for quidditch games.

Mentored by Paul Richards, muggle sports is a relaxed intramural club that meets Mondays and Wednesdays after dinner. The kids learn different muggle sports, play, and goof around a lot.

Dance meets every weekday in the dance hall from 4-6. Dancers are not expected to come to every class. Mei teaches the students jazz, contemporary, and classical ballet. Mei will hold extra dance classes on the weekends if students ask her to. They put on two productions each year, one of which is a collaboration with the choir and band.

At the beginning of each month the students offer topics and each week Penelope picks one of the suggested topics and emails it off to the students. The students have the whole week to prepare their arguments. Come Friday the students meet in Penelope's room after classes and argue. At the end of the debate Penelope picks a winner and then buys everyone pizza.

These kids pretty much hang out all the time, they forgot when their actual meeting day is but every second Saturday of the month they sponsor Game Day and invite others to come play tabletop, video games, and online games with them.

Students meet in whatever house is sponsoring the club that week on Tuesdays after dinner. They usual play in round robin style tournaments so everyone gets a chance to play. The club will occasionally hosts a tournament when there is a large student interest.

Book Club: Seraphim Donnelly-Rousseau, Jennifer Parry, Hendrix Turner, Julian Prideaux, Meka Palakiko
Students meet in the library on Wednesdays after dinner and discuss their favorite books.

Pride Club: Mackenzie Dubinksy, Seraphim Donnelly-Rousseau, Jennifer Parry, Eden-Rae Lee
Pride club celebrates diversity and the whole spectrum of gender and sexuality. They meet Wednesdays after classes.

Every Friday and Saturday night the students rent out the theater and play the most recent movies released. They fund their movies nights by selling tickets and concession snacks.

These students hold meetings and discuss dances and parties. They vote on themes and they have to work with the student government to get funds.

The academy classes run in forty minute blocks from 7:00am-3:10pm, students are given a forty minute lunch break from 11:10-11:50. There are 10 periods in one day and 9 of them are for classes, one is set aside for lunch.
1-3 years have a set schedule.
4th years (freshmen) may choose to have one free period or an elective
5th years (sophomores) may choose two electives, they are allowed one free period.
6th years (juniors) may choose up to five electives/advanced classes, they are allowed up to two free periods.

Flying- Flying and safety techniques

Cultural magic- A study of magic across different cultures from around the world.

Ritual magic- This class teaches the basics of ritual magic. Ritual magic takes more preparation than magic done with a wand. There is ritual magic from all across the world and different cultures.

Divination I and II- Basic divination class which teaches the different techniques and tools.

Literature I and II- Wizard and muggle literature.

Languages I, II, and III- An introduction to languages and language arts.

Art- Senior students may take internships at the local art gallery, there is also a field trip at the end of the year for all art students to the art gallery.

Music- Students learn magical and muggle musical techniques and history.

Environmental magic- Students learn herbology, magical botany, forestry and how magic and the environment relate to each other.

Magical crafting- Students learn about making magical equipment.

Spell theory- Students learn the theory behind spell making.

Combative magic- Students learn defensive and offensive magic when in duels.

Muggle studies- An in depth look at the way muggles survive without magic. The final test is to go one week (outside of classes) without magic and write a paper on it.

Ancient runes- A study of ancient runes, the runic language, and using runes as a way of divining the future.

Arithmancy- A complicated class that teaches students complex mathematics as a way of divining the future.

Advanced Classes:
Advanced flying- Flying tactics which focus on sports, long distance flying, and concealing magic while flying. At the end of each year Cecelia Hernandez brings her kids to a professional quodpot game played at the Georgia stadium.

Magical botany- Focuses more on growing plant life. These students spend a lot of their time in the green house, the garden, and the forest. They tend to go on a few hiking trips throughout the year and at the end of every year there is an overnight hiking trip.

Advanced Transfiguration- Students learn transfiguration in depth.

Animagus Studies- Students learn how to take on an animagus form themselves.

Advanced Potions I and II- Students learn how to make complicated potions.

Advanced Herbology I and II- Students learn in depth herbology. Growing and using them in the class room and in potions.

Wandless: Students learn the in depth techniques of using magic without a wand.

Advanced Care of Magical Creatures: At the end of every semester César brings the kids on a field trip down to the Bluebell Zoo.

Advanced Divination- Students learn advanced divination techniques and all tools and forms of divination.

Advanced Astronomy- Students do an in depth study of the constellations, their mythology, patterns of the planets & stars, and the math that goes along with it.

University Programs:
Potions - focuses on potions and herbology, this course prepares students for any course they choose to follow concerning potions

Herbology - focuses on herbology and it's many applications, these students spend a lot of time down at the farm and in the green house with their favorite professors

Charms - focuses on charms and wandwork

Care of Magical Creatures - focuses on magical creatures and caring for them, this course will take a more practical approach to learning about animals and how to care for them

Forestry and Magical Biology - focuses on forestry, magical biology, environmental studies, and the relationship between nature and magic

Historical studies and preservation - students may specialize in any aspect of wizard history after they study their core year, there is a heavy focus on preservation of magical artifacts and places

Magical anthropology - this course is the study of humanity, culture, and ritual in magical societies

Wizarding literature - the study of wizarding literature and the creation of new literature from a wizards perspective

Magical crafting - this course takes a hands-on approach into how magical artifacts are made, students may choose their specialization in their second year (wands, brooms, time turners, transportation devices, etc)

Transfiguration - this course focuses on the many tiers of magically manipulating an object's molecules to turn it into something else (Animagus studies is a branch of this and it may be taken after the first year)

Auror training - focuses on DADA and trains future aurors for immediate placement upon graduation, taught by someone from LAW

Political science - leads to careers in law, internships with both the LAW and GAAW

Pre-med - encompasses healing magic using both charms, herbology, and magical biology

Culinary school - magical cooking and baking

Arts and music - magical and muggle music and art techniques

Astronomy - study of the planets, stars, and astrology

Divination - in depth study of the practices and ways of diving the future

Arithmancy/Ancient Runes - in depth study into translations of arithmancy and runes, it's heavily intertwined with the schools language and divination programs

Muggle Studies - further study into our muggle neighbors, most students live among muggles in the senior year of study to see how muggles truly function in the world

University Scheduling:
First year students have their courses set for them at the beginning of the year. Second through fourth year students have more personalized, specializaed, and advanced schedules which can be discussed on a one on one basis. The course for aurors only takes two years and all other courses of study typically take three to four years.

Student Handbook

At the beginning of each year students are given handbooks which have a map of the school grounds, codes of conduct, and other rules set for them by the faculty.

Blue Ridge School Handbook:

Code of Conduct:
1. While in class students are expected to treat their teachers and classmates with respect. Rude, disruptive, and abusive behavior will be punished.

2. Students are to remain in the school uniforms while they are in classes. They are permitted to wear street clothes at any other time in the day.

3. Truancy and unexcused absences will lead to detention.

4. If students are caught in sexual situations with another student on school grounds, both students will receive a week of house arrest.

5. Vandalism and bullying are not to be tolerated.

6. Be on time. If a student is late to class more than three times, they will receive a detention. If a student is continuously late they will be sent to the head master for a discussion.

7. Curfew for 1-3 year students is 9pm every night. Curfew for 4-7 year students is 11pm on the week nights. There is no curfew on the weekends for 4-7 year students.Quiet hours are always 9pm-6am and are to be observed by everyone.

8. There are to be no illicit drugs or alcohol on campus. Prefects, Head Boy & Girl, and Head of House may confiscate them if found.

Punishments:
1. Students caught fighting will receive one detention on their first offence. On their second offence they will receive a week's worth of detention.

2. Students caught skipping class will receive one detention on their first offence. From then it will depend on personal situations.

3. If a student is out of their dorm building past curfew they will be put under house arrest, the length of time is TBD by house parent.

4. Students caught breaking curfew will be given detention the first time. If a student is caught a second time breaking curfew they will be give house arrest for a week. If they are caught more than three times though, their weekend privileges will be taken away.

5. Students caught with drugs and alcohol will be submitted to a full room search and given house arrest for a week. Their parents or guardians will be notified of this offence. Second offence will lead to a three day suspension from classes and extracirricular activties.

6. Serious offences will lead to more severe punishments which will be discussed with the head master.

Blue Ridge University Handbook:

1. Disruptive, rude, and abusive behavior are never okay in a classroom setting. Be respectful to teachers, classmates, and guest lecturers.

2. University students do not have a uniform but there is a dress code. Please do not wear offensive or revealing clothing to class.

3. A student is allowed up to three unexcused absences will lead to the student loosing five points from their final grade in the class.

4. Turn papers in on time! For every day that a paper is late, the final grade of the assignment will loose one point.

Dorm Life

Student dorms:
Dorms are split up by house and houses are separated by years. Each dorm has a fully functional kitchen, a common room, a porch, bathrooms, and an attic. The common rooms are on the ground floor of every dorm and supplied with couches, chairs, televisions, computers, and work tables. There is also a fire place in each common room and they are attached to the Floo network for easy transportation to and from the school. The Floo network is closed to the dorms for most of the year but open on holidays and move in and out days. There is a large bathroom on each floor for the students that live on that floor. Floors are split up as follows: 1-3 years on the first floor, fourth years on the second floor, fifth years on the third floor, sixth years on the fourth floor, and seventh years on the fifth floor.

First through third years are split into groups of 4-6 students who share larger rooms on the first floor. These rooms are equipped with the necessary beds, desks, and dressers. Fourth through seventh year students are paired up into room mates and share smaller rooms. These rooms are equipped with two desk, two single beds, two dresses, and two small closets. Each floor shares one bathroom. There are singles available for students with special needs (an allergy or a disability). Singles come with their own bathrooms.

University house is a bit different. University students are no longer split up by their former houses. Their dorms make up half of University Hall that goes up five stories. The ground floor, like all the other houses, is home to the common room, the kitchen, and a porch. Each floor up from there is a suite. Suites are divided up by year and made up of 1-8 singles. Suites are only divided by year, not gender. First year university students are one the first floor, second on the second, and so on. Although housing is provided, second, third, and fourth year university students are permitted to live off campus and commute to classes, as are students with special circumstances.

Each house is set up with a head of house, someone who is on staff. Each head of house lives in an apartment in the basement of the dorms. There are also student prefects who are picked by the head of house at the end of each school year. Student prefects are junior or senior students who have shown to be exemplary students in the past. They are expected to report back bad behavior to the head of house. They are allowed to confiscate illegal items but illegal items must be brought to the head of house immediately. At the beginning of each school year two senior students who were prefects are appointed to Head Boy and Head Girl. They have the same responsibilities as prefects but a little more power in the school. They are able to dole out referrals to the heads of house and to the headmaster himself.

Curfew for 1-3 years is 9pm and for 4-7 years 11 pm on weekdays. University students have no curfew though they are expected to observe quiet hours (9pm-6am). Students are expected to be in their dorms by curfew. For 1-3 years this means in their individual rooms, 4-7 years are permitted to be in their common areas after curfew but they must remain in their dorm building and observe quiet hours.

For off-campus living there is the Mountain Top Apartment building. There are ten floors and ten apartments on each floor. The apartments range from one bedroom to four bedrooms and can comfortably fit up to eight people in the bigger ones. It's a pet and familiar friendly complex and there are low rates for students.

School grounds and rules:
Basic School information:
Blue Ridge School for Witchcraft and Wizardry is a school for young wizards to hone their skills. The school accepts students 11-18 years old. Transfer students are accepted at the beginning and end of each semester.
First through third years are like American middle school.
Fourth through seventh years are like American high school.
The cut off date is September 1 (so if a student turns 11 on or before September 1, they may begin schooling in that year).

Blue Ridge University is a magical University for students aged 18-22. The school accepts transfers and wizards and witches from other magical high schools.

Basic lay out:
The school is located in the Blue Ridge mountain range in Georgia, USA. It is isolated from the surrounding communities as there are forests all around the school and the grounds are protected by magical boundaries. The school is very close to a portion of Lake Blue Ridge where the students sometimes sneak down to have beach parties or go swimming. There is also a smaller lake on the grounds called Mystic Lake. It is home to many magical creatures and despite it's size, the lake grows quite deep in the middle. It is ill-advised to go swimming in Mystic Lake.

A few miles off campus there is a sleepy, little mountain town inhabited only by Wizards. It's called Bluebell Town and it's much like the Hogsmead of Hogwarts. Upperclassmen (4-7 and university) are allowed to go into the town on their own, for underclassmen there are biweekly visits organized and chaperoned by a few of the faculty.

The school is compromised of several buildings, a garden, a greenhouse, a quodpot field, a quidditch pitch, a common ground, and a smaller fields to accommodate for muggle sports. The term garden us used loosely to describe a section of land set aside for magical plants and herbs to be grown and used for herbology students. Here's an MSpaint map to help orient you.

Buildings:
King's Hall
This is the main building on campus also known as "the castle." There there is a ball room, a theater, the dining hall, the doctor's office, and faculty offices including the head masters office. The building is easily distinguished from the other buildings on campus as it's a small castle. The school's owlery is at the top of King's Hall and the owl post is delivered every morning during breakfast. Breakfast is served from 5:30-9:00am, lunch is served from 11:00am-1:30pm, and dinner is served from 6:00-8:00pm. The dining hall has six long tables set up, there is a banner hanging above each table with their house colors and mascots. Students do not have to sit at their house tables but most choose to anyways.

Valley Hall
This is where underclassmen take their classes.

Georgia Hall
This is where upperclassmen take there classes.

University Hall
This building is the largest on campus and where all the University classes are held. All of the University staff have a personal office in this building as well.

The Percival Walker University Kitchen
The newest addition to the school is the university kitchen complex. Culinary students from the University take their classes here and the cooking club holds meetings in these facilities.

The Bainbridge Library
The library is usable by all the students and staff including University. Commissioned and built under Margaret Bainbridge's watchful eyes in 1866, it was named after her when she passed away in 1906.

Black Bear Road
Faculty housing for staff who do not wish to commute. It is not so much a road as it is a small community set up at the edge of the campus for staff privacy.

The Greenhouse
It's lackluster name says nothing for the greenhouse itself. The garden club and herbology students alike spend a lot of time tending to the expansive plant life.

The Gymnasium
Near University Hall there is a gymnasium with a dance studio, a pool, treadmills, and other work out equipment. A lot of funding goes into the gym so each few years the equipment is replaced with brand new, state of the art, equipment.

School term:
Like all American schools, classes begin for students in September, the Thursday after Labor day. School runs through the year until mid June when final exams are taken. Exams are followed by a lengthy summer vacation. There are a few shorter vacations interspersed throughout the year including; Columbus day (4 day week), Thanksgiving (2 day week), Winter Holiday, Mid-winter break, and Spring break. Arrangements are made for students who prefer to stay on campus during their breaks.

Curfew:
For 1-3 years curfew is 9pm. This means that they must be in their individual rooms by 9 pm, every night.
For 4-7 years curfew is 11 pm on weeknights. This means they must be in their dorm buildings and observing quiet hours by 11 pm Sunday-Thursday. Fridays and Saturdays there is no curfew but they are expected to be respectful.
There is no curfew for University students but they are expected to observe quite hours.

Punishments:
Punishments are covered in the student handbook. Punishments are relatively handled on a situational basis. If a character breaks a rule it is at the discretion of the player as to whether or not they get caught unless the offense is wide out in the open. (i.e. fights in the hallway will be caught). Punishments aren't all bad and they lead to some fun threads that can get played out!

Uniform:
School dress code must be adhered to on school grounds from 7am until the end of the school day at 3:10.

Skirts, trousers, or shorts of the appropriate length in black, grey, or in house colors. Jeans are not permitted during class hours. Shirts are to be white button ups. Sweaters and vests are permitted in black, grey, white, or house colors. A tie must be worn around the neck in the students primary house color or both colors. Student badges must be worn during school hours to make sure no non-students are on campus during school hours. Shoes must be black with no higher than an inch heel. Black floor length robes are to be worn all through out the day. Each student is provided with a robe at the beginning of the school year, the inside of the robe is that student's primary house color and they are all charmed to stay temperature regulated.

University- University House does not require a uniform to be worn but there is a dress code that students should refrain from wearing offensive or revealing clothing. University students receive a robe at the beginning of the school year as well.

Familiars:
Students are allowed to bring their familiars to school as long as they are cleaned up after, not massively huge, and harmless. One student is permitted one familiar on campus. Cats, dogs, and other small animals are permitted but if a student has to be warned more than three times about cleaning up after their familiars, the familiar will be sent home. Familiars are debatable, if you're not sure just ask. No. You may not have a moose or a giraffe.

House Information and Sorting

Sorting: On the first night that students arrive on school grounds, first year students are handed a plain white, circular badge. After dinner, the first years are rounded up and brought to the front of the hall. One at a time, students place their badge in a black velvet bag that is held by the headmaster. The headmaster closes the bag, gives it one good shake, and then retrieves the badge from inside the bag. The white badge will have transformed into one of the house badges, indicating where that student will best fit. Description: Quirank house has turned out some of the brightest wizards and witches in their time. They are known for their quick wit, vast knowledge, and dedication to learning. Others may call them nerds but Quirank students are true innovators.

Description: Shawnee house is home to the creative students on campus. Artists, musicians, and inventors alike flourish in Shawnee house with the help of other students and their wildly creative house parents. Many great collaborations have come out of Shawnee house.

Description: University house is where all the University students live and thrive together regardless of their former houses. It is a place for growth and learning. Their house parent provides guidance and late night study sessions in her own apartment as she is a night owl anyways.

OOC Rules
1. Don't be a douche bag. Stuff is going to go down in character that we don't like, don't take it personally and don't start drama. If you post something on RP secrets or some other site like that, it's grounds for removal. No one likes an ooc bully so if there is unsavory behavior in chats, there will be a warning and if the behavior continues it's grounds for removal. If there is a problem or you don't like the way things are going, talk to me! We can work it out and come to a solution that makes everyone happy!

2. Spelling and grammar. Check, check it.

3. ~~Limit to seven characters. Unlimited NPCs. Go nuts!~~ I changed my mind! Go nuts anyways! No character limit.

4. Godmodding is not okay. Don't do it.

5. You must be 18 or older to play, there will be adult content in threads and such.

6. Player knowledge and character knowledge are two different things, make sure your characters aren't reacting to things they don't know.

7. Most importantly, have fun!

FAQs

Must I always play students?
Of course not! Faculty, adults around the community, students, siblings, and others are all acceptable. All University faculty is open but if you would like to adopt a current faculty member from the lower school, just talk to the moderator first. Not all the threading has to happen on school grounds. This is our world, so let's expand it! If you have any ideas for new locations, just talk to me and we can work on it together!

What's an NPC and how do they work?
An NPC is a non-playing character. Most of these characters will be student parents or siblings or other people in their lives. There is an NPC journal that's usable by the entire community and all your NPCs can go on there if you would like. They do not need a full application but there is some information we need to know.

What sort of technology do the students have access to?
Students have access to the World Wide Wizard Web while they are on campus. They may access the muggle web from the town center. Cell phones are permitted and they work on campus at all times but if a student is caught using a cell phone in class they will be given detention. Each dorm room is set up with a land line.

What about underage magic?
Wizards come of age at 17 in the magical world. Underage students are not allowed to perform magic without the presence of an adult outside of school grounds.

How do journals work?
Character journals are first person and in character except for OOC announcements, introductions, and any other OOC information you would like to share which can all be posted to the OOC community.

How are scenes written?
Scenes are written in third person, past tense. You can write them in thread or log form using AIM or google docs. Please use this format at the top and don't forget to use an lj-cut for long scenes:

Premise
Blue Ridge is a sister game to Dresden Academey and a Potterverse rpg. Applications will always be open and the game will be played and expanded for as long and as crazy as we want to make. Blue Ridge is all about interactive plot where everyone can play, not just react. There are two schools in game; the Blue Ridge School for Witch Craft and Wizardry and Blue Ridge University which are set on the same campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia.

Blue Ridge School has had a major overhaul to the staff for the 2011-2012 school year as many of the older staff retired and needed to be replaced. Many staff members are questioning the school's logic in hiring the new headmaster. Headmaster Sato is now not only faced with the overwhelming responsibility of running a school but there is doubt every where he looks.

To make matters worse there is a dark force growing in secret. The influences are slowly infiltrating the school and soon the whole world, muggles and wizards alike will know what has been laying dormant in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

History
Established in 1750 by Percival Walker, Blue Ridge School of Witchcraft and Wizardy was one of the first American schools for magic. It was built while Georgia was still a colony to England and still remains somewhat tied to that heritage. It was a relatively small school with only King's Hall, Valley Hall, and Georgia Hall. Students were separated by dorms into the five "houses"; Appalachia, Shenandoah, Roanoke, Quirank, and Shawnee. By 1755, work began on University Hall and the building was finished in the spring, it still remains the largest building on campus. It took several years to get off the ground and running but once it was established, Blue Ridge School for Witchcraft and Wizardry and Blue Ridge University became a power house, drawing in students from all over the country.

The Revolutionary War was fought from 1775-1783. The school faced enrollment issues and suffered funding throughout the war but they kept their doors open for wizards and witches who still wanted to be educated. After the war ended the school's enrollment more than doubled and the school had an influx of funding for new programs. This helped develop unique University studies and cirriculums.

Just short of eighty peaceful and prosperous years passed for the school before the Civil War broke out in 1861. The school's faculty was split as to what side they took in the conflict but headmistress, Margaret Bainbridge was there to hold the school together through the entire war. She told faculty that if they had a strong opinion either way to go fight in the war but to keep their opinions and conflict out of the school. Though several of the faculty left the school because of Bainbridge's strict "no side taking" policies, the school carried on. Since they maintained a strict neutrality in the war, they were able to keep their funds relatively safe and Bainbridge's tactic saved the school from falling into debt and disrepair. In 1866, a year after the war had ended, the school built a new library, it was later named in honor of Margaret Bainbridge in 1906 after she died.

The 1870's saw a rather large expansion to the school. Six dormitories were built for the ever growing student body, now each house had their own dormitory including the University. A small community was built at the northern boundary for staff who choose to live on campus, the community was called Black Bear Road and is still home to many staff members and their families. In the same building spree, the greenhouse and the garden were built at the edge of campus.

No matter how much diversity the school pulled in, it could never forget it's Southern roots. In 1888, an in depth sports program was developed and a large gymnasium was built. Quodpot and quidditch fields were made the same year. Later additions included the pool in 1932 and the dance studio in 1970. Since the late 1800s the school has been entrenched in athletics and a lot of the funding continues to go into the sport's programs so Blue Ridge's teams can compete on a national level.

The most recent addition to the school was the University culinary kitchen. It was built in 1985 when the school decided to add a culinary program.

Throughout the years, the school has been faced with adversity, turbulent times, and good times. The school has seen it's fair shares of ups and downs and had quite a few nears misses but still Blue Ridge is one of the most highly respected schools in America and remains strongly funded to this day.

At the end of the 2010 school year Headmaster Jacob Cotts retired and left the young, inexperienced Ichirou Sato in his place. Cotts was convinced that Sato could handle the responsibility but other staff members are not so sure. This year will prove if Cotts was out of his mind when he made his decision for a replacement or if he saw something that no one else did.
