In Thomas Foster's, How To Read Literature Like A Professor, Mr. Foster mentions the fact that every story and every character are connected in one way or another. He calls it "intertextuality" (no joke.). I find this concept very interesting. He claims that no one really intends for intertextuality to happen, but it does. Now, I could get into how perhaps this is only because the human brain can only think on certain levels, no matter how smart you are, and how all minds are alike in some way generally, but I won't. My point is,

Do my characters remind you of characters in other books you've read? Who were they? Is it a good connection, or a bad one?

Johann: I had a dream once that you left me. We were...we were somewhere, a museum, I think. A big one, like the Met. I went to see the Monets and you went to look at the instruments and I couldn't find you again. You never came back. I spent hours and hours in that museum trying to find you. Racing around and you were just never there. I woke up in a cold sweat and my heart pounding in my chest.

Daphne: Oh, all of my dreams are the same. I'm in a field, a beautiful, beautiful field. The light is golden and the wildflowers are bright and they sway in the breeze. The tall grass tickles my palm and I smile into the horizon. I have this dream every night. I missed it while I was a vampire.

Boris Kolesnikov//Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
I actually had a lot of trouble finding Boris. I'm super, super picky about pbs (who remembers when I changed John's pb like, five times?) and no one was working for me. I couldn't get the right feeling out of any of them. Then, I found this icon. I instantly screamed, "OH MY GOD, JOHANN!" and thus, Johann had a face! It was kind of hard to find icons for him though.

Clemence Poesy//Daphne du Maurier
I had two boys at ps when I made Daphne. I was seriously needing a cute, French girl character, and Daphne du Maurier popped into my mind. Then I thought, who could possibly play her? And then I thought, oh right, Clemence. She's adorable and blonde and she is so totally Daphne in my head.

Claire Danes//Wendy Faulkner
Faulkner was someone I thought about for a long time. A long time being like, a week or so, idk. Anyway, originally I wanted a teacher and I wanted Claudia Schiffer as the pb. Well, I found out that I'd have to wait a really long time to be able to make a teacher, and I didn't want to do that. So, I went a-searching and found Claire Danes and went, "OH HELLO YOUNG WENDY" and thus, we have her.

Jenny Lewis//Victoria Hugo
Her face was originally Becky Lou Filip, but then I decided she looked to young. I then switched to Billie Piper, who also didn't fit for me. I had seen Jenny Lewis icons at hollow_art and soconvinced and thought oh hell I'll give it a shot, and she worked out really well!

Yeah. I don't want to do my other chars. I am lazy whooooops.

Part Two

My favorite pb would have to be either Boris or Clemence. They're both just so perfect and ugh, I love them. So much.

Brad Pitt. I've used him twice. Twice? Yes, twice.

So, I can't help but notice all of the comms are pretty slow lately, which is completely understandable seeing as everyone's going back to school and just majorly busy. I am one of those people, for real. Also, I never want to bother people for scenes because I feel like you all hate me. No, really, I do.

Anyway, I've been debating leaving for awhile now. But I always come to the same conclusion. I can't, simply because I love my characters too much. (And by my characters, I mean Daphne and Johann. They're my favorites, I think. The rest are kind of annoying ugh.) So, I'm not leaving, so I don't really know what the point of this paragraph was, so ignore it.

Since it's been so slow, I thought maybe we should all take an official hiatus. Like, the comms all shut down for a week while we get our shit together, and then when the week is up, we decide if we want to continue or not.

I mean, we really don't have to do this, I just know some people have been getting frustrated with their characters lately, and this seemed like it was maybe a good idea idk.

It's a feeling that starts out low in his gut. At first, Johann disregards it. It's such a small feeling that it shouldn't be anything to worry about, he figures.

He's wrong, though. It's the feeling that killed Caesar, the feeling that drove Don Jose to murder Carmen on the streets of Seville. Johann doesn't think anything of it, though. Not yet. He's never h ad a reason to feel this way. Not until Hoffmann came along and swept him off his feet. (Quite literally, too)

Hoffmann knows nothing of it, of course. He lives in ignorant bliss, continuing to teach by day and steal Johann piece by piece at night. (And sometimes in the early morning, too)

It starts on a Wednesday. A random Wednesday when Johann happens to pop in to Hoffmann's classroom after school. There's already a boy in the classroom, though. He's sitting on the piano bench--Johann's piano bench, mind you-- plucking at a guitar. Hoffmann emerges from his office, cleaning his spectacles, and that's when the feeling starts. It's a faint stab, low in his stomach. It's the opposite of a break- ice cold instead of burning.

Johann blinks at the boy, who doesn't seem to notice him, and then turns to Hoffmann. Hoffmann looks at him and pauses before he speaks. "Can I help you, Mr. Goethe?" Never Johann around other people. Surnames only.

Johann straightens his back and shakes his head. "Oh no," he replies, "I am sorry to have bothered you, Herr Hoffmann. I only had a question. It can wait." And he turns to leave before Hoffmann can reply.

The feeling grows a few weeks laters, when Johann and Hoffmann are sitting in Hoffmann's living room. Hoffmann's scribbling something down, something that Johann can't see or read. He leans over slightly, trying to catch a glimpse, but Hoffmann shifts it out of sight. It's anyone's guess whether or not it was a conscious move on his part. "What are you writing?" Johann asks. Hoffmann dosen't respond, but somehow Johann feels it must be connected to the boy he saw in the classroom.

The feeling comes to a head a few weeks after that. It's a Wednesday again, and Johann really does have a question that can't wait. He enters Hoffmann's classroom, ready to apologize for interrupting, but finds it empty. But there's Hoffmann's bag on his desk and-- There's laughter from behind the door to Hoffmann's private studio. The one with the baby grand that's been christened by Johann and Hoffmann themselves. He knocks faintly on the door before opening it to peek in.

Panic seizes him.They're sitting on the bench. Both of them. Their legs are touching and their hips and briefly Johann things that Hoffmann must be punishing him for Emilia. Revenge is best served cold, after all. Johann can't move. He can't breathe. He can't do anything. He's simply stuck, watching Hoffmann slide his fingers over the boy's, correcting them on the strings.

It's completely hypocritical of Johann to be reacting this way, of course. He should know better than to think Hoffmann would cheat on him. He should, but he doesn't. He can't think straight when Hoffmann's fingers are still on the other boy's. Instead, the fear and panic rip at his insides, breaking down all of what Hoffmann hasn't already claimed for himself.

Johann steps back from the door. He doesn't even bother to close it before walking out of Hoffmann's classroom, keeping a hand along the wally to keep himself grounded. When Hoffmann returns to his home that night, he finds a note on the kitchen counter, a key taped to it. Johann's key. Hoffmann reads the note, and as he crumples it in his hand, Johann can swear he can feel a hand around his heart, squeezing it.

I can't do it anymore. I love you. More than anything. But I can't. The lying. The pretending I don't care when you look at other boys, I can't. I'm sorry. You are stronger than I am. It's always been that way. Always.

Johann's never been much a fan of alcohol. His father drinks. His father's gone. Johann blames the alcohol. It doesn't have quite the same effect on Johann, however. Johann's simply sweeter, more loving. More willing to hug people, to kiss them. He's a bit of a stumbler too.

He's at Hoffmann's, of course, when it happens. When he finds the bottle and decides to take a few swigs. He decides he likes the burn a little, and that he wants more. That's Johann, always wanting more. When he's done, he snuggles up next to Hoffmann on the couch, nuzzling into the man's chest.

"Theodor," he murmurs, slightly glassy eyed and slurring, "I like you."

Hoffmann simply smiles down at him, faintly amused. A hand runs through Johann's hair and Johann thinks he could purr. He thinks he might be purring. He moves and shifts up Hoffmann's body, wrapping his arms around the man's neck and kissing his ear. He giggles faintly, moving his kisses along Hoffmann's jaw and finally to his mouth, where he places a kiss on the corner.

"Theodor," he murmurs again.

"Yes, Johann?"

"I really like you."

Her favorite musical was Rent. It was one of the first things she'd ever told Napoleon, and in his mind it sealed the deal. He was going to marry this woman.

He wasn't quite certain why a thing like her favorite musical being Rent would make him want to marry her, but he didn't argue. He asked her out. Asked her to marry him. They had their first child together two years later.

It started with Caitlin forgetting small things. Names and faces of people she'd just met. Songs. Quotes. It grew. She started forgetting Napoleon. Her parents. Napoleon insisted that she go to a doctor, but she refused. "I have to stay with my children," she'd tell him, shaking her head. Napoleon would always nod sadly and drop the subject.

Then one day, she was shaking so badly she collapsed. Napoleon was at home that day, thankfully. He took her to the Hospital as quickly as he could. The doctors did all sorts of tests. Scans. Napoleon sat in the waiting room with Shelley and Claire. Four hours. Six hours. Eight hours. The doctor finally came to talk to him.

"She has a tumor," he said. "It's inoperable. There's nothing we can do. I'm sorry." And then he walked away, leaving Napoleon standing with a hand over his mouth, tears springing to his eyes.

She died four months later.
