S U M M E R

“You don’t have to go.”

Willa’s bottom lip trembled and she stared over at her brother with worried, weepy eyes. Silas kept his gaze ducked but she could tell he was holding his breath for her response. Her fingers curled around the letter in her hands, one she had been meaning to tear up and toss away since it had come in the post...if you could call an owl swooping through an open window, the post...

“Maybe you can go instead,” she offered. Willa pushed the letter toward her brother. He was only a little taller than her, surely he could fit in the robes they’d bought. “I can tell them I want you to go instead of me.”

“It doesn’t work like that,” Silas said, though his eyes had lifted from the grass to look toward the letter. “Daddy said I’m like him. He said I don’t have magic.”

“I don’t think I do either,” Willa whispered, her fears getting the best of her as her lips trembled. Silas’ eyebrows went high and his forlorn expression wiped away.

“Don’t be silly.”

He put out a hand and placed the letter on the ground between them, the Hogwarts seal glinting in the summer sun. Silas took Willa’s hand and he pressed her palm to the ground.

“Come on, do it. I know you can.”

She bit her lip, scared of both being able and unable to perform what she now knew was magic. She had always thought...it had been her secret…

Shutting her eyes, Willa imagined a trio of daisies, maybe a few more so that she could weave their stems into a crown. Underneath her palm she felt the tickle of their petals and the warmth of something new and exciting, and her lips upturned.

“Willa…”

She opened her eyes and had to blink a few times to take in the wonder about her. The grassy knoll they’d been sitting upon was now covered in white daisies, freshly blossomed from her own hand. Willa looked at her fingertips before looking at Silas and found that her brother was staring at her with great awe.

“You do have to go,” he said, plucking one of the daisies to put in her hair.

F A L L

Willa curled her quilted blanket around her, feigning illness for the roommates who were making their way toward the Hogsmeade carriages. Halloween weekend in the small village was supposedly spectacular, and she had every desire to go...but…

She pulled the blanket over her mouth and nose as she stared irritably at the wall. Willa didn’t want to believe that Grant Montague would truly try to lock her up in the Shrieking Shack, but he’d already stuffed her in a closet this week and his brother had made similar remarks, so…

It was better safe than sorry, wasn’t it?

She believed, perhaps, that if she got to sleep early, she wouldn’t feel the sting of missing out on all the fun. Her idea was proving wrong as hearing the excitement out in the corridors of the dorm was making her feel worse. Willa pulled a hand out from under her blanket to pull her curtains shut, but stopped mid-tug at sound of a light tapping on glass.

Craning her neck to look toward the windows, Willa was surprised to see an owl nearly devoured in the grass, staring at her with a quizzical expression. She slipped out of bed to open the window, using a bit of strength to pull it wide enough to fit through the package(!) that the owl had brought.

After offering a treat in thanks Willa dropped into the large chair she’d been standing on, surprised that she had received post, at this hour, and of this size. Her fingers danced along the funny stickers placed all over it, the twine knot and bow, and it did not take her long to figure out who the package was from.

Happy Halloween! the letter inside started, and Willa could hear her brother’s voice, You probably have better costumes with magic, but I was cleaning up the attic and found some of mum’s old clothes from the supposed good ol’ days and thought you might like to have them. Send pictures, okay (and wizard candy, that stuff was good last year!)

Willa placed the letter on a side table as she lifted up the beaded vest, feeling the nostalgia of her childhood rushing back to her. A great warmth filled her and she wondered---

“I’m going to come, wait for me!” she exclaimed as her roommate came back into the room, having forgotten their coin purse. Willa jumped to her feet, clutching the post box to her chest. “One minute, okay? I’ve got a costume and everything!”

W I N T E R

“No, no, no! Silas, you can’t!”

“Look what they did to you, Willa!”

She tugged her arm into her chest, wishing for her robes so that she could hide the bruising, wanting to hide away her entire self from her brother’s glare, which was a stark contrast to the bright and shiny Christmas tree standing tall behind him.

“It was an accident!”

Silas scoffed, “Yeah, that piece of shit ‘accidentally’ grabbed you hard enough to make your whole arm purple, sure!”

Willa held back the panicked thought that she believed Reid’s brother had slathered something on his palm before he'd grabbed her in the queue to the Hogsmeade carriages and that was why the swelling hadn't gone down. She'd hidden the ghastly purple mark under her sleeve during the train ride home, hoping that it would have gone down by the time she reached London, but it was the same as it had been seven hours ago.

“There’s nothing to do about it now,” Willa muttered and she flinched when her brother whirled on her with disbelief on his face.

“There sure is! You need to have mum or dad owl the damn school and tell them what’s going on!” Silas threw up his hands, “Hell, I’ll do it!”

“It’ll make everything worse!” she cried out. “They’re horrible already and I don’t tattle!”

“It’s not tattling if---”

“Silas!” Willa grabbed her brother with both hands, causing her to wince greatly as a streak of pain rushed up her arm. “Please, please don’t say anything! It’s fine, I’m fine, it’ll go away! They won’t stop if I say something, they won’t, they’re horrible people, it’ll only---it’ll only make it worse and---and I can’t---”

Through her bleary eyes she watched her brother’s angered expression fade and he put his hands to her shoulders. “Okay, okay, I won’t---I won’t tell mum or dad.”

“Promise!”

“Be cool, Willa! I promise, okay? I promise,” he said. Looking defeated, Silas unclenched her fingers from his shirt and delicately held up her arm. He let out a great sigh at size of the bruising. “Mum just brought home some healing remedies from the market, I can get them.”

Willa’s eyebrows rose and she scrunched her nose. “Can’t we just put ice on it?”

Silas shrugged. “Some of mum’s remedies work.”

She blinked a few times up at her brother, her uncertainty evident. Silas let out a soft chuckle.

“You go to school to learn witchcraft and you’re doubting the power of some old hippie’s healing crystals?”

S P R I N G

She threw her arms tightly around her brother and smiled at the sound of his laugh.

“Hey, grad!”

“I can’t believe it,” Willa breathed, dropping back to the ground. The bustling station of King’s Cross had always felt overwhelming, but today s

She lifted her face up to the clouds with the hope that the rain would wash away all that plagued her.

It didn’t.

Willa dropped her chin and avoided the puddles as she made her way home.

“It was me. I killed him.”

Willa felt herself untying at the seams. She hunched forward, staring at the therapist’s feet, unblinking as her heart began to race. Weeks of these sessions had brought her to this point. She had been spilling the stories about Silas, about her childhood, about all that she’d stuffed away and now she was at the end, she’d reached the end of her stories, the bottom of the barrel, what laid underneath it all.

“I killed him. I’m the---I’m the----I’m the reason my brother---that my brother---is dead.”

“Why do you think that?” her therapist said, the calmness of his voice causing Willa to feel even more unnerved. She’d just admitted to being the cause of a lost life, how could he remain in a nearly neutral state?

“I never should have gone to Hogwarts. If I had never gone---if the Montagues had never known---if I hadn’t---if I hadn’t…”

“Lived your life?”

Willa’s fuzzy, distorted gaze pulled up from the ground to stare across the office. Sun streaked through the room and split his face into shadowed strips.

“You deserve to be here, Willa. You’re allowed to enjoy your life for more than moments at a time.”

She found herself shaking her head in disagreement, in disbelief, in the confusion that somehow her therapist knew that she clung to the happiness that found her but that it always seemed fleeting. It was her fault that it never stayed, it was what she deserved, she didn’t...do the right thing...

“You can’t forgive yourself for something you didn’t do. You didn’t kill your brother. He’s not dead because of you.”

“But---”

It had just cost her many sickles to sit in absolute silence for forty five minutes

Haven't done this since March of 2013 so it's about time! I've got itchy fingers!

Here's how it happens. You give me a couple, any couple (so long as I've played one of the characters) and I'll write a drabble around 100 words about them in reply to your comment. This can be ANY couple (anything.. shippiness or cuteness or whatever), and it can have been a game-canon couple, or something completely off-the-wall. I do back-history, I do future, and I do AU crack. If you want a particular theme or rating, let me know. The striking sound of the wrong notes in the wrong chord filled the house, followed by frustrated squeals and near shrieks. Mattie tip-toed toward the source of the ruckus, the only one brave enough to approach the center of un-melodic chaos. With the door slightly ajar, she peered her head in and covered her mouth to hide her laughter at the sight of her little sister pounding furiously away at the grand piano. Composing herself, as to not create any larger of a fury than what was already, Mattie pushed into the room and strode happily toward her sister, hair bouncing on her shoulders with each step.

"You sound great, Nicky!" she squealed, clapping her hands together and forcing herself not to wince at a painfully-wrong note. The little sister looked sharply up from the keys, a deep frown on her face.

"You are not supposed to lie," she said, turning back to the piano. Nicola's feet didn't reach the pedals so she sat on her knees, allowing her to reach the sheet music with relative ease. She switched the parchment back into order and began the piece once again. It was going well, it always started out well, but Mattie readied herself for the run that always turned into a jumble of flat notes and sharps. She winced; there it was.

"I simply cannot do it!" Nicola let out, dropping her hands to the keys in disgrace. Mattie closed the few feet of distance between them and slid onto the stool, propping herself right next to her little sister.

"It's because of how you're laying your fingers," she said. Mattie squinted at the music, not having played this song in some time, and after a few moments of reading it, closed her eyes and let her fingers dance across the keys. Hearing the notes and the melody escape her fingertips was more magical than the spells their parents concocted in their lab, more beautiful than the dresses than lined their closets. Music to Mattie was the key to happiness, and simply hearing the first few notes brought the whole piece back from the recesses of her memory and she finished the song.

She opened her eyes and turned to her sister with a smile, but was greeted with the most monstrous of pouts. Nicola's childish features made the expression comical, really, but Mattie knew that if she laughed her sister would never forgive her.

"Here, let me show you," she said, and without asking, took hold of Nicola's little wrists and placed them in position. With soft, supporting words, Mattie slowly helped her sister's fingers move from the right key to the next, working through the difficult spots with encouragement and pride. She explained how difficult it had been for her to learn it, and Nicola watched their hands with great intensity. Mattie enjoyed the focus on her sister's face, hoping that maybe they would share a common love for music.

Mattie bit the inside of her cheek as they reached the last few bars of music and...they...were...."Done!"

Her hands flew up into the air as Nicola let out a shriek of delight.

"You did it!"

"I did it!"

Mattie threw her arms around her sister in a great big hug, rocking her back and forth. She pulled back, grinning from ear to ear. "You're going to be better than me someday, I have to start practicing more."

The younger sister looked thoughtful, and she tilted her head in question, "Do they have pianos at Hogwarts?"

The reminder that she was heading away to school in just a few weeks saddened her, and Mattie looked down at the keys of the piano. It would be the first time she'd ever be away from her parents or Nicola, and it was frightening.

"I don't know, I hope so," Mattie said, looking back to her sister. Her hands moved to fix the bow in Nicola's hair and the little sister's eyes crossed as she attempted to watch the ribbon fall back into place. Mattie finished the delicate knot and draped her sister's long hair over her shoulder. "If there is, I'll make sure to play it every night."

"Me too," Nicola said, taking on a look of determination. She squirmed and sat back in position, poising her hands on the keys, "It'll be like we're playing together, and that always sounds better."

Mattie smiled and listened to her sister practice their favorite song. She was glad to have something to look forward to.

Will clapped him on the back roughly, "C'mon, Jakey, it'll be fun! Bexley brother bonding, remember?"

Jake scowled and pushed his brother away, only to have William sling his arm over his shoulders. It would have been seen as an affectionate gesture, but in reality it was the only way the older brother would be able to maneuver Jake onto the pitch.

"There's food, cake, and pretty girls," Will said, waving with his free hand toward a small flock of girls. They giggled and hid behind their hands, and Jake could already sense his brother's attention slipping away from him. "And…there'll be fireworks in a bit, so there's no reason to not want to be here."

"There are more than ten reasons for me to not be here," Jake said, eyes rolling up to the sky, "I'm tired, I don't drink, I'm on a strict diet so I don't eat cake—"

"Shut it," Will hissed, his arm around Jake's shoulders tugging a bit too hard around Jake's neck. Struggling against his brother's unintentional (or intentional?) chokehold, Jake managed to grab hold of William's wrist and with a quick motion, freed himself and twisted Will's arm around and held it hard against his back.

"Feckin'---Jake! Relax!" Will said, pulling against his brother's hold. "People are going to stare!"

Jake blinked, feeling as if he'd skipped in time from being in the chokehold to this defensive maneuver. He released Will, taking a few steps back. The older brother whirled around and scowled, rubbing his shoulder.

"If you weren't such a nutter I'd show you off to Catriona," he said, hand going through his hair at the thought of the talent scout for the Pride. Jake had reason enough to believe that Will fancied Catriona McCormack, but he'd learned to keep his observations about his brother's life to himself because he usually ended up getting hit for voicing them.

Will sent his brother a look of disdain and led him to an empty patch of pitch. The friends and family of the Pride players, management, stadium workers, and other quidditch people were being treated to a nighttime Pre-Season Pride Picnic. To Jake, it seemed out of character for the team, but perhaps they were trying to soften their image. He allowed Will to push him down to a blanket that was set up, and Jake crossed his legs underneath him. Will came around to face him and pointed his finger stiffly into Jake's face.

"Stay here if you're going to be a nut, okay? Just sit and I'll get you food or whatever."

"I said I wasn't hungry, I don't want cake or—"

"Right---whatever, okay, I'll be back in five with drinks. Water! Water's healthy enough for you, yeah?" Will stood straight and clapped his hands together, looking honestly proud of his idea. Jake made himself smile up at him and nodded, because Will needed to think that he was doing something that didn't bother him. "Bexley brotherly bonding."

"Bexley brotherly bonding," Jake repeated, the mantra having been drilled into his head for the past three days. He watched Will leave, knowing that his brother was going to be gone for more than five minutes because there were people to talk to, girls to flirt with, and sponsors to woo. Jake would be impressed if his brother returned in under half an hour, so he stretched his legs and laid back on the blanket, using his arms as a pillow. The lights of the stadium made it impossible to see any of the night sky, and Jake let out a breath.

No one approached him. He wondered if somehow they could sense that he was off, different…a nutter, like Will said. He wasn't sure if it bothered him, as he struggled with having a decent conversation with anyone besides his brother, and even then that was difficult. Jake talked to Will, but if things went a way that started to make him feel off, or feel too much or too little, he had the ability to shut down his mind. A disability. It was easier to avoid talking to anyone than to let himself get to that point.

The crowd began to quiet as the lights slowly went out in the stadium. Jake remained on his back as they prepared to start the firework show and smiled up at the sky as the stars became visible. He started to name a few of the constellations, enjoying the quiet and darkness that had fallen around him. He searched for quiet, he reveled in it.

A golden streak of light shot off from the other end of the pitch, the first of the fireworks. Jake watched it zoom high into the sky and when it reached its apex, it burst into a bright and loud display of light.

Suddenly---he wasn't on the pitch. He was in the middle of a battlefield, lying on his back in the high grass as the shouts and screams of his fellow aurors coursed through the air. The staggering streams of hexes and jinxes created a rainbow colored web that looked ready to fall on top of him, to hurt him even more. The voices grew louder! He had to get away or they were going to keep torturing him, they were going to use that spell, the one that he'd refused to learn---

He was sprinting now, stepping over bodies and knocking into shadows in the dark. The explosions continued to go off over his head and he covered his ears to try and block out the sound. He couldn't, he couldn't do it they were too loud! Jake stumbled, shutting his eyes and letting out a scream that shook every bone in his body. He couldn't run for much longer, his stature hunched with each step like he'd soon have to crawl away to escape. He was about to collapse when a set of arms wrapped themselves around his torso, hefting him up.

"Jake! JAKE! They're just fireworks! It's fireworks!"

Jake's eyes shot open and saw that it wasn't aurors and death eaters spread out across the field, but a gathering of people, innocent bystanders, a---he gasped for air as another explosion went off, and all he could see once again were the death eaters fast approaching.

"I don't have my wand!" he screamed, struggling against the hold. He got lifted off his feet, pulled back into what appeared to be a tunnel, a tunnel? A cave, where was he? Jake was shoved against the wall and in seconds it was his brother standing in front of him, hands planted on his shoulders to keep him pinned to the wall. Jake struggled, howling to be let go. "My wand, my wand, I don't---"

"Jake, Jake!" William said loudly, his hand clapping onto the side of his brother's face. He gripped onto the straggly hair and forced Jake to look at him, "We're at the stadium, you were on the pitch!"

"The death eaters! They're coming!"

"They're not! It's just my team and their friends! There aren't any more death eaters!"

His words startled Jake and he stopped struggling against his brother's hold. No more death eaters? That couldn't be right. They were---they'd always---He looked to where Will was pointing and saw the groups of families nestled on their blankets, their faces illuminated by the fireworks going off above them. There were no hexes being thrown, no field where the bodies of his fellow aurors were strewn. Jake attempted to keep his chin up and accept that he'd had a hallucination, but the pain the images brought was too fresh and his face screwed up as he attempted to hold back his tears.

"It felt so real," he cried out, shaking his head in misery. He was never going to escape those demons.

William's arms were around him immediately, holding him tightly. Jake's legs buckled, but his brother's hold on him was strong enough to keep him upright. "I know, I know it did. It's okay, you're okay, we're gonna go. It's okay, everything's going to be fine, I'm here..."
