001; a first entry of sorts

I was going to write "testing, testing, is this thing on," but that's rather silly as this is merely a journal, yes?

I was going to write that my kneazle King Leopold III has been dragging in dead animals again as presents. While I appreciate the sentiment and want to scold him profusely, I don't want to break his little kneazle heart. But the goings on of my pet kneazle, as comically babyish as he is, doesn't exactly make for exciting journaling, yes?

I was going to write about the exciting developments my team and I have been working on in the field of both practical and experimental potionry, but I realized that the only person that would find that exciting is myself.

How about I settle for a humble request for someone to take me out to coffee? After all, it's been four years since I've last stayed here, and who knows what is good or not? And don't you dare tell me that coffee and tea is the same in every place.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Devika Agnihotri wasn't one of those Gryffindors that needed the entire attention of the room, one of those loud and raucous lions that were burning with intensity and raring for action at every opportunity. Far from it--while she was usually at the scene, she was in the back. Yet don't mistake her, she was a Gryffindor through and through and when push comes to shove, despite her tendency to think things over first, she will spring into action. She's not one of those women who are overflowing with bubbly perkiness (she finds that nauseating), but she's prone to smiling. Of course she's prone to the bouts of cattyness that every girl is, but she still has a kind word for almost everyone, which makes her an excellent mediator in diplomacy.

At first impression, she comes off as articulate, polite, and well-spoken; though public speaking still shakes her a bit. Admittedly, it takes her awhile before she warms up to you. If she likes you, then she's a friend that you'd like to have--considerate and loyal, caring and sweet. She laughs easily and is quick to make jokes; she's witty and playful and is liable to talk your ear off. High marks came easily for Devika, but she still made sure to study and work hard. This still applies today: like any other potioneer, she's curious and bright, precise and intellectual, efficient and straight-forward. She's neat and meticulous, almost to the point of OCD--friends often find themselves at the mercy of Devika's insistence at cleaning their flats for them.

Whenever Devika starts something, she needs to see it finished--people often mistake that for being "married to her work." The woman has high expectations for herself and her friends, and can be something overprotective. She's modest but has high self-worth. Despite the fact that she used to be something of an ugly duckling in her school years, she doesn't place as much value in her looks as she does in herself.

Her temperament is rather fickle though--a lot of things does annoy her and make her weary, but she usually tries to find the bright side of things and mask irritation with appropriately wry commentary. Anger her though, and she'll hold a grudge. Her displays of her anger are curious and atypical of a Gryffindor--for example, those girls that called her a slag in the sixth year were ignored. Everyone had thought Devika was taking the higher ground for not screaming at them, what a saint she was! It was purely coincidential how the girls all became sick from bad Cauldron Cakes found in their rooms the next day and had to stay overnight at the hospital wing. Of course now that she cannot rely on pranks anymore than she's out of school, she's getting better at speaking up when the occasion calls for it. Additionally, she never forgets a kindness, and collects kindness like Chocolate Frog cards.

Though she's had a handful of boyfriends, both short-term and long-term, Devika isn't looking to get married anytime soon. Despite her parents' almost cliche want for Devika to marry (an Indian boy, preferably), she enjoys being single and unattached, but if the right one comes, she won't be opposed at all. She's had a few more one-night stands than she's willing to admit, but sees it as a part of enjoying her youth. Devika possesses a fair sense of justice and she isn't fond of inequality. In a world that is increasingly tumultuous, she's skeptical of it all, but knows what happens if she speaks up too loudly (save to the small group of people that she trusts). Think before you act, after all--yet there's a discernible sense courage about her that is almost tangible.

A P P E A R A N C E

HEIGHT: 5'6
WEIGHT: 120
BUILD: Slender, but with curves proportionate to her size
EYES: Dark brown
HAIR: Dark brown and naturally wavy; wears it down whenever she's not at work
STYLE: Devika is very much a girly girl when it comes to clothing, a rather new phenomenon for her as she was pretty much didn't care what she threw on as long as it was neat and clean. This still reflects in her clothing choices--she never wears anything that she deems as too crazy or outlandish, none of the bold patterns or bright colors that the last decade dictated as fashionable. She likes skirts and nice dresses to show off her admittedly nice legs (but not too short!), fitted jackets, and nice jewelry, particularly earrings. Of course she does have her lazy days (more often than she'd care to admit) where she just throws on a jumper and a pair of trousers and hauls out the door. She perceives her hair as something of a crowning glory, but she knows to tie it back for work. Being a potioneer, being messy is sometimes unavoidable, so she definitely is not the type to flip out if a little something splashes on her clothing. It's not the end of the world and things can always be washed or replaced.

H I S T O R Y & B A C K G R O U N D

Devika Agnihotri was born in the suburbs of Oxford, England to Harshal and Lalita Agnihotri, both immigrants from New Dehli on the seventeeth of October. Her childhood was fairly uncomplicated, alternating between playing with dolls, poring over picture books, and chasing after her older brother. Her father was a Muggle Studies researcher, his papers consistantly published in wizarding academic journals around the world while her mother was a doctor that specialized in pediatrics. Her father liked to joke that he had an awful time trying to court his future wife because he had to resist using magic to impress her, a story that Devika enjoyed greatly growing up. When her older brother Kishor received his Hogwarts letter on his eleventh birthday, Devika waited impatiently for her's--ever since she had made paper aeroplanes she had made float just after her fifth birthday.

The Sorting Hat had a bit of a sticky spot trying to place her--it was stuck between placing the bright child in Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. After a good minute or two, the little girl had insisted (politely) that the Hat really should place her somewhere fast, because there were others waiting their turn! Though she wasn't the loudest of the lions, she found herself fitting in. Academics came easily to Devika--she found the subjects genuinely interesting and wouldn't hesitate in thrusting her hand up and debating or asking about a point that a professor had just stated. She only had a few close friends, mostly her dormmates. She was perfectly content to stand in the backdrop and let her friends get the attention. Something of an ugly duckling in her youth, she would never forget the days of large, crooked teeth, thick, coke-bottle glasses, and her scrawny, gangly self. Yet it was impossible to dislike the girl who was all smiles. She remembers getting into very few altercations (save for the Great Cauldron Cake Incident of 1975, ahem) but she was very firm in getting her way and in his displeasure if something was wrong. After she got her teeth magically fixed and took off the glasses the summer before fifth year--it was as if something happened; something magical that couldn't be taught at the school had occurred. Devika was considered something of a regulation hottie. Boys that she had been on perfectly civil, friendly terms before were clamboring for her attention and well, like any other girl, she liked it. She had a few flings, a few serious relationships here and there.

The only clubs and societies she belonged in were of the intellectual persuasion (you couldn't get Devika to play Quidditch even if you tried your best) and to the delight of Professor Slughorn, had decided on her career during the fifth year. Potions had always been her best subject and after graduating, accepted a position as a potioneer in a prestigious company in Paris. She had packed up and moved there, happily assimilating into Parisian culture and language. However, the growing turmoil in her native country has gotten worse, and despite her parents' owls to assauge her worries. It was only in the last year when she was starting to debate with herself to leave and return to Great Britain, but what really cemented her decision was the announcement that her father had disappeared. No sign of a struggle, no sign of a fight. Her mother had been inconsolable, and Devika immediately quit and went back to Kidlington. Devika soon became employed by another potions company but her main objective is to stay with her family and hoping that the large swells of the wizarding war will tide over soon.

R A N D O M F A C T S

♦ Speaks, reads, and writes French fairly well, can barely speak conversational Hindi.
♦ Sings in front people only when intoxicated.
♦ Tendency to snort when something is really funny, a fact that she's a bit chagrined about.
♦ Prefers it when people she's unfamiliar with do not address her as "Dev" or "Devvy."
♦ Believes that she is only four cards away from completing her Chocolate Frog card collection.
♦ Lets her brother think that he's doing her a favor by "educating" her in all things comic books, sci-fi, and Dungeons & Dragons. Believes herself to be the best little sister in doing so, because in return she takes him shopping.
♦ Tries her best to believe that her father is actually okay somewhere, despite all signs pointing to the contrary. She just won't allow herself to think otherwise.

O O C

PLAYER: Sab
CONTACT INFORMATION: Upon request!
CHARACTERIZATION: Mine mine mine, plz 2 not b stealingz
PLAY BY: Freida Pinto
