Oh my. Isn't it quite lovely outside? I'll be so sad when the snow melts away. Although then, of course, we shall have spring and green and vibrant colours to look forward to, so I shan't really be sad at all. Still, I will miss winter. I always do.

I've just finished one of the books I borrowed from Papa's library - it was on defensive charms, actually, and some of them are really quite difficult. He said I could take it when I asked <strike>Although I don't think he really registered my being there</strike> and I really do think it's a lovely book. Perhaps a year or two in the future I'll actually be taught the things in class, as opposed to finding an empty room and attempting to work them and then wondering if they were actually working at all. Would anyone care to help me test them, on that note?

Oh, and Charis - did you want to borrow the book? Everything of Papa's is quite rare, I believe, and very old, so I thought there was a chance you hadn't read this one yet. And you do so like to read, so I thought I'd offer. <strike>I don't know how to make up for Cass to Dora, so maybe this will help.

</strike>And I've still got far more Christmas candies than I shall ever eat, if anyone should like a few. I don't quite know what led Mama and Papa to believe I could consume so very many.

Pollux and Cassiopeia were constantly trying to be the 'best', and Marius would often join the fights, and Dorea found herself using all her brains just to keep out of it - which wasn't to say she wasn't often made to do things by her elder siblings, sans, oddly, Marius.

As a child, Dorea was always closest to Marius. He looked out for her, against all odds, and was able to afford her some protection against the arguments - protection which vanished on the day he was eleven and every other wizard his age was boarding the Hogwarts Express. Dorea does not honestly know where Marius is, now; she does receive letters from time to time, but there's not much else they could do and be safe doing. It is Marius, in effect, that changed Dorea's world view. Beforehand she'd always taken what her parents said as fact, if prone to trusting her hero-brother more often. Now that she'd lost a brother to those beliefs - well. Dorea certaintly does not approve of prejudice against squibs, and it's even trickled around her mind that prejudice against those of - well - lesser blood aren't altogether 'lesser'.

After Marius's proving to be a squib, Dorea was carefully watched the entire year following - and then ignored once more when she received her Hogwarts letter and was sorted dutifully into Slytherin, just another Black to join the crowd. She's most known for being the younger sister of Cassiopea (who rather seems to dominate Dorea's life) and Pollux, for being a Black, and for having a brother who turned out to, scandelously, be a squib. It's not out of the ordinary for her to be a pawn of Cass's, though Dorea will, on occasion, defy her elder sister.

She just chooses her battles very, very cafefully. And usually makes certain it doesn't look like outright defiance. Dorea can usually be found actively avoiding perturbed Blacks, which has given her a very good knowledge of hiding spots about Hogwarts. It's not uncommon to come across her in an abandoned classroom, reading quietly, or wandering a usually empty hallway, conversing softly with paintings. Dorea is rarely to be found simply sitting about in the common room - the best time to catch her is at classes or meals, and even then she tends to disappear as soon as time is up.
R E L A T I O N S H I P S
FATHER Cygnus Black; tba.
MOTHER Violette Black (nee Bulstrode); tba.
SIBLINGS Pollux Black: tba.
Cassiopea Black: It's not a typical relationship, but it works for them. Cassiopea compensates for when Dorea is more emotional than rational, and Dorea tries to keep the peace. It works out more or less, and Dorea knows, at least, that she can always count on Cass to look out for her, if in Cass's own particular way.
<strike>Marius Black</strike>: Technically not her sibling any longer, since he was disowned, but still her best friend of childhood. He occasionally sends her letters, though he never precisely tells Dorea where he's at. She tries to write back, but how often her letters reach him is unknown. (She also sends money)
ETC She's long since given up counting relations.
ROMANCE tba.

P E R S O N A L I T Y
How Dorea acts tends to depend on her sibling's moods - particularly Cassiopeia. She's quiet, reserved, and usually looks a little vulnerable when Cass is particularly upset. It tends to be the best way to survive. She tends to give way to Pollux and Cassiopeia, as far as appearances go, and keeps her rebellions quiet and disguised as failures. She's bright, and she knows how to keep herself out of the way - which is what she usually does, ducking out at the first sign of a family argument, or the barest hint that any Black looking for her with a less than content expression. Dorea has gotten to be very good at hiding.

She's usually the first to voice worries of any sort, although she often tries to keep anything she says trivial, so as to keep from seeming of any threat to Cass. Dorea does recognize that her sister is hardly stable, but she doesn't try to control Cassiopeia - rather, she tries to avoid Cass's anger, and tries to shield the people she cares for as best she can. Which is hardly an easy task, considering Cass's even stronger ressentment of Callidora, with Dora's position as Head. She also tends to apologize for Cass. Quite a lot. Although she does make certain Cass doesn't catch wind of it - and she can usually be found on her sister's side, somewhat, even as she tries to play peacemaker.

If her siblings aren't upset, Dorea is a much happier sort of person. She's liable to smile, and is genuinely warm and friendly to anyone she cosiders to be a friend - which isn't to say she isn't haughty, and won't find within her the Black temper. She will. It just takes quite a lot to get Dorea upset, and anyway, she prefers to avoid argument whenever she can - her entire home life is a battle between her siblings. She's polite and will usually lend a helping hand, and doesn't seem inclined to stab people in the back or go quite as mad as her sister could be considered to be.

While Dorea may seem, to most, to be entirely her sister's puppet, she is her own person. She's just a smart person, and she realizes that at the moment, she couldn't possibly disobey Cass openly and come out on top. And she's hardly the sort for Gryffindor courage, running in against the odds...so she simply bides her time and ducks into empty hallways whenever she even thinks she sees someone unpleasant. When she does get caught by an angry Cass or someone equally undesirable, or some topic she dislikes comes up - Dorea is prone to remembering letters she has to write, or a first year she has to tutor (that she can actually come up with a first year to uphold her story says more about her being a Black than it doesn't). Or she might hear someone calling her. Whatever the case, it's very hard to pin Dorea down when she doesn't want to be pinned down.
Z O D I A C
Virgo: While these Slytherins might not be the most outgoing of their class, they are often among the most wise, and their canny observation and lightning-fast analysis of any given situation will take them far. Often behind that quiet mien hides the mind of a big dreamer, who had both the imagination to come up with a concept and the power to follow it through. These Slytherins are an interesting mix of politeness and politics, pragmatism and intuition. They make good alchemists, Ministry bureaucrats (well, somebody's got to do it), and academic advisors. They are often underestimated. This is most unwise.
O O C
MUN Katie.
PORTRAYED-BY Laura Donnelly.
DISCLAIMER Icons credited in comments. Profile layout was taken from various players who apparently stole it from Cassie. I don't own Laura Donnelly or Dorea Black, but I do have some claim on my version of Dorea.
