School Events
All events are located in the school calendar. Most monthly events will be played out on the community. Repeating events can be played at player request.
Repeating Events
Day Trips to St. George's Way occur once monthly on Sundays. Students are transported to the Way to visit the shops located there. Quidditch Games occur from October to early April, Saturday afternoons. Some matches are the two Dresden teams playing each other (for practice or to decide who will play the next away game). They play other schools in North America, both away and at home. Quodpot Games occur from October to early April, Saturday evenings (excepting vacations). All games are between the Dresden house teams. All games are played on the Dresden Quodpot Pitch.
Non-repeating Events by Month
September
The first weekend of the school year is an exciting time for students looking to pick up extracurricular activities. The Club Fair is held twice annually; after Summer Break at the beginning of the school year, and six months later for those interested in joining later on. At this event, each club promotes its activities and agenda to fellow students in the hopes of recruiting like-minded individuals to enjoy the benefits of club membership. Parents’ Weekend occurs over the last weekend of September and is an excellent opportunity for families of students to come and explore the environs and workings of Dresden Academy. Students and faculty alike are available to answer questions and guide visitors on a tour of the facilities. Immediately prior to the first Quodpot game of the season Dresden Academy kicks off Spirit Festivities. In this period, the House teams and cheerleaders attempt to rally support and House pride amongst the students. Sometimes the Events Committee will organize activities for the student body to encourage interaction and goodwill. At the end of Spirit Festivities is one of the most anticipated events of the school year: the Homecoming Dance! Nominations for Court are accepted in the week prior, and voting occurs on the night with the results announced midway through the evening. It commences after dinner at 7pm, and ends at 10:30pm. Younger students are permitted to observe the 11pm curfew of the upperclassmen on this occasion. The event is strictly chaperoned. The theme of the event is determined by vote of the Events Committee and is announced in advance.
October
Eat, drink and be scary! All Hallow’s Eve is an important date in the Wizarding world, and Dresden Academy celebrates it in style with Halloweenfest. On the nearest Friday to Halloween after being ‘tricked’ into a hard day’s study, students are ‘treated’ to a dinner of traditional harvest foods followed by a costumed social event in the evening, at which teachers give out candy, and classic activities such as apple bobbing and piñata are offered. It commences after dinner at 7pm, and ends at 10:30pm. Younger students are permitted to observe the 11pm curfew of the upperclassmen on this occasion. The event is strictly chaperoned.
November
For the Fall Choir Concert students practice songs chosen by Marianne LaForte to showcase the group's talent. For the Fall Orchestra Concert students practice pieces chosen by Marianne LaForte to showcase the group's talent.
December
Dance Troupe's Winter Recital. Students work on group and individual pieces with the aid of Betsy Livingston. As the year draws to a close and the colder weather sets in, students can look forward to the formal dance of the Winter Social. It commences after dinner at 7pm, and ends at 10:30pm. Younger students are permitted to observe the 11pm curfew of the upperclassmen on this occasion. The event is strictly chaperoned. The theme of the event is determined by vote of the Events Committee and is announced in advance. The Student Art Exhibition is held twice annually. It showcases the best artwork from students produced in the fall and spring semesters; pieces are put on display in Dresden Hall. Drama Troupe's Fall Production. Students work to mount a play chosen by Brennan Weeks.
January

Valentine's celebrations are held around Valentine’s Day (naturally). On the day itself, an owling booth is set up in the main corridors of Maple and Oak Halls as well as outside the student dorms. Here students can purchase candygrams from Apple’s Sweets or roses from the Herbology labs, which can be sent anonymously or with a signed note to crushes and loved ones. Purchases may only be made between class or on breaks, but will be delivered throughout the day. The Sweetheart Dance is held on the nearest Friday evening to Valentine’s Day. It commences after dinner at 7pm, and ends at 10:30pm. Younger students are permitted to observe the 11pm curfew of the upperclassmen on this occasion. The event is strictly chaperoned. The theme and dress code of the event is determined by vote of the Events Committee and is announced in advance.
March
The Spring Fling Festival is held over the three days in late March. During this light-hearted time, outdoor activities are at the forefront in celebration of the fine weather. In the afternoons an outdoor screen and projector are set up for some open air cinema, and competitive and recreational water sports are held at Lake George (only competent swimmers are permitted to participate). On the Friday evening, a hayride takes the students on a scenic tour of the school grounds before dropping them off outside Dresden Hall for the Spring Fling Dance.The hayride commences after dinner at 6:30pm, and the dance ends at 10:30pm. Younger students are permitted to observe the 11pm curfew of the upperclassmen on this occasion. The event is strictly chaperoned. The theme and dress code of the event is determined by vote of the Events Committee and is announced in advance.
April
There are no non-repeating events in this month.
May
Over Spring Break, students are sent home with information regarding courses of study over the next year of their education. This can be as simple as a list of electives and advanced study options for years 1-6, up to and including information about the Dresden Academy University Program and brochures for other higher education options for seniors. In Scheduling, the first week of May, students meet with school counselor Dr Nathaniel Dawkins for a short interview to discuss their educational needs and ambitions. Prom is a formal event open to all students (given that the school is relatively small) and is held in early May. Nominations for Court are accepted in the week prior, and voting occurs on the night with the results announced midway through the evening. It commences after dinner at 7pm, and ends at 10:30pm. In the second-last week of May, Quodpot and Quidditch Tryouts are held. Each House takes the field for an afternoon to observe and challenge the skills and potential of new prospects for their team. The Student Art Exhibition is held twice annually. It showcases the best artwork from students produced in the fall and spring semesters; pieces are put on display in Dresden Hall.
June

The Senior Send-Off is an event to which all are invited, including the family and friends of the guests of honor. Tributes and reminiscing are a much-enjoyed part of the evening, which often ends in a few turns around the dance floor. It commences before dinner at 6pm, and ends at 10:30pm. Younger students are permitted to observe the 11pm curfew of the upperclassmen on this occasion. The event is strictly chaperoned. The dress code of the event is determined by vote of the Events Committee and is announced in advance.
July-August
School is not in session, therefore there are no school events.

Dresden Academy
Dresden Academy is a new model of magical education for young wizards and witches, hidden away from curious eyes in the beautiful Adirondacks of Upstate New York. Run by the Hulett family for as long as they've owned the town proper; the school is set to educate a new generation of talent. There is an undercurrent of political shift at Dresden. Jillian and Irene Hulett have been quietly tussling for control of the school. Jillian, the current headmistress is entirely unaware of the machinations which her sister may launch to wrest her position from her. Add to this that the New York Association of Wizards has decided to cut Dresden Academy's funding for the 2011-2012 school year. At present our headmistress, Jillian is struggling to figure out what to cut in order to save money. She'll be trying to trick staff into retiring, debate cutting some elective classes, and consider minimizing the sports program (quodpot, she's looking at you). Dresden Academy is a high school/university game for Original Characters set in the Harry Potter Universe. We're looking for players who like organic plots and can think outside of the sandbox. Dresden Academy
Dresden Academy is a high school/university game for Original Characters set in the Harry Potter Universe. Played on scribbld, googledocs, and over aim. This year has already seen their sporting teams slashed and some of their favored teachers threatened with forced retirement. They have no idea what's in store for them in the coming months; if only the students could stay out of their own mischief long enough to notice what's happening around them. Monthly events, sporting results, anything goes play. We're a small, but friendly and fairly active group looking for some new players up for all kinds of chaos.

NPCs

NPCs are usually Non-player characters. In this game they are family members of the students, or other people involved in their lives. They don't need a full application (though they do need a little info) and can be played as part of the character's journal (or you can have another player play them to help you with story). They won't have their own tag on the community or be an integral part of big plots, but they can help round out your characters story lines.

Quodpot and Quidditch

Quodpot
Quodpot is to American Football as Quidditch is to Soccer. It's similar enough except that the players ride brooms and the ball might explode at any moment. Each team consists of 11 players. Each player plays a defensive position and a corresponding offensive position (based on body type and skill set required for both). This wiki was insidiously helpful in figuring out which position to play. During the game each team attempts to pass the quod and sink it into the pot at the opposite end of the pitch before the quod explodes. If a player is holding the quod when it explodes the clock is stopped and a new quod is brought to the field and placed on the line where the old quod exploded. Points are awarded each time the quod is placed in the pot (a cauldron filled with a potion which stops the quod from exploding). Like football, the game consists of four quarters. Both teams play offense and defense in the course of the game, a coin is tossed at the beginning of each gam to see which will play offense first. If the team playing offense cannot score within 10 attempts the teams switch; offense plays defense/defense plays offense so they have a chance to score. Players wear uniforms similar to Quidditch (minus the robes, they impede movement) and beefed up padding. The team captain more often than not is the Centerguard/Middle Linebacker, as both positions are well poised to make calls on the field of play. Many, mucho thanks to my brother who sat with me and explained two-way football positions for what I assured him was utter nonsense

Quidditch
Quidditch is much more popular in Europe, but most schools in North America keep a team. It follows the same rules as in the HP universe. Quidditch wiki! The two Dresden teams play each other for practice. The teams meet biweekly on opposite days to practice on the Quidditch pitch. They hold games every other week on Saturday afternoons. When they can arrange a game with another school they travel on the weekend or host that school's team for the afternoon. Some other schools have a "play team" and a "reserve team" so that both teams get to play. Dresden is more egalitarian and switches off which team plays the lead or which team travels when a school only has one quidditch team. The uniform consists of padding and colored team robes (Team A is usually in black, Team B in orange). Students can use school brooms or supply their own.

Dorm Life and Room Assignments

Dorm Life
The dorms are each a separate house (larger on the inside than the outside). Each dorm has a kitchen, laundry facility, a porch, bathrooms for each year, and common areas (the common area has seating, a television, computers for students who don't have their own, and tables for study). Above the attic in each dorm is an Owlery. 1-3 years live on the first floor of their dorm (divided into large rooms for 4-6 students by class year). 4-7 years are paired off into roommates in smaller rooms. Some singles are arranged for students with severe allergies or other medical needs (singles have their own bathrooms). Typical rooms are equipped with two single size beds, two desks, two dressers, and two small closets (singles only get one of each item; the larger underclassmen rooms get 4-6 of each item but no closets). There is minimal cleaning staff, so students are expected to take turns cleaning their dorm bathroom and common areas as part of their roster of chores.
University students have their own dorm, a brand new facility in which students are currently allowed singles set in suite style floors (4 rooms per suite with their own common area, convenience kitchen, and two bathrooms). At present the suites are divided by gender. University students are no longer divided by house. Suite Layout.
There is a house parent for each house who has their own apartment in the basement. These positions are held by faculty. The houses also have Student Proctors, one upperclassman boy and girl for each house. The SP gets a single room and is chosen at the end of the previous school year for their scholastic and extracurricular achievement. The other students have taken to calling Student Proctors "the secret police." The University dorm does not have Student Proctors.
Curfew is 9 pm for 1-3 years, 11 pm for 4-7 years. University students have no curfew, though they are expected to observe quiet hours (which begin officially at 9pm). Dresden Rules
1. Be awesome. 2. Keep drama to a min. If you can't resolve something between yourselves speak to a mod. 3. Play the plots you want, when you want. 4. No character limit. You may have multiple characters on one journal; just label posts so it's clear which character is writing. 5. Spelling and Grammar. Please use spell check. 6. You must be 18 years or older to play. This is because there may be adult content in the game. 7. Godmodding, power playing: don't do it. You are in control of your characters and your characters alone. 8. Player knowledge is not the same thing as character knowledge. Please keep this in mind when playing. 9. The OOC community is there for a reason. Try to keep OOC comments there and off the game community.
FAQ
The font is too small! There's a neat little trick that works with most web browsers. Hold ctrl and press + or - to adjust. It'll expand (and conversely drop) the font size (and everything else). How do you label posts? For the most part we follow the W's (who, when, where, what) and slap on a rating. Ratings are simply to note if it's SFW (safe for work) or NSFW (not). You can add other notes (for violence or sexual content if you feel the need; you can skip any NSFW posts if you're unsure and not into reading it). Foul language but no other dirty content could probably rate it a SFWish (which is somewhere between the two ratings). Do I have to play a student? No, if you like you can play an adult member of the local community of St. George's Way (though a majority of game events occur at the school and are centered on students). You may be able to adopt a faculty member as your own (or create a new one), but you must speak with a moderator first. How do character journals work in game? Character journals should be written in first person, present tense prose. Posts can be marked private or friends locked in the subject line (but please leave the actual post public so that other players can read even when not logged in) and "characters" will only be able to read what's open to them. The first post should be your characters bio. Long posts should be placed under an lj-cut. If you're not sure how to do something, ask a mod. How do NPCs work in game? NPCs are usually Non-player characters. In this game they are family members of the students, or other people involved in their lives. They don't need a full application (though they do need a little info, submitted HERE) and can be played as part of the character's journal (or you can have another player play them to help you with story). They won't have their own tag on the community or be an integral part of big plots, but they can help round out your character's story lines. How does the faculty journal work? Players will be given the faculty journal password on request and can use it to play as any of the established faculty. If there is interest some faculty may be adopted as full time characters.

Wands and Cores

Wands
The Basics
Please consult the HP wand wiki when choosing a wand for your character. Wands are comprised of wood, have a length and flexibility and may have one or two cores. The wand should suit the wizard/witch. It can be a family heirloom, brand new, or second hand. Please be sure to research the wood you choose for reasonable availability and characteristics/lore. Length is between 7 and 15 inches and is largely arbitrary; the length may have some special meaning to the wizard/witch given that numbers are very powerful, but this is often unknown to even the user. Flexibility can include: bendy, brittle, flexible, inflexible, pliable, rigid, springy, sturdy, supple, swishy, unyiedling, whippy. It's partially an inherent quality of the wood the wand is made of, but also a quality of the wand itself, its movement in a user's hand that reflects on the wand's character. All of these qualities are described in the HP books. Others may be added at moderator discretion.
Wandmakers
There are several wandmakers in the US, Canada, and Mexico. The one closest to Dresden is Stark's Wands located in St. George's Way. Lael Stark does most of the wand crafting. His daughter Pepper crafts custom wands as well as pairing wands with users (usually on the first or second try). If you'd like to add a wandmaker contact the mod.
Cores
Cores would include any core available in HP, more creative cores (from other HP flora and fauna) are available pending mod approval. Wands may have one or two cores (called a dual core). Alihotsy: The leaves of this plant can induce hysteria. This core usually seeks out mischief makers. Augurey Tail Feather: The Irish Phoenix: it's cries were thought to foretell death, but in fact only foretell rain. This core is powerful for divination. Billywig Stinger: The Billywig's sting causes giddiness and levitation. This core is excellent with charms. It often seeks out fun loving creatures. Boomslang Venom: The Boomslang is a poisonous snake who can camouflage itself. The venom makes a challenging and deviant core that's excellent for transfiguration. Chimera Scale: The Chimera is a monstrous-fire breathing creature with the body of a lioness and a tail the ends in a snake's head and a goat's head arising from the center of the spine. Though powerful cores treasured for their raw power, they are rare creatures and hard cores to come by. Clabbert Horn: A monkey-frog that moves with grace and changes color to warn for danger. This core is excellent for transfiguration. Doxy Wings: Doxies are fairy-like creatures, but more mischeivous and dark. They are venomous and somewhat nasty and when the wings or venom is used as a core it would provide a boost to jinxes and hexes. Dragon Heartstring: Fire breathing and very dangerous creatures. This core doesn't work with subtlety. It seeks out challenging folks. Erumpent Hide: Erumpents are large African beasts, resembling Rhinos. they are powerful creatures with a thick hide that is able to repell charms and curses, making it desirable as a wand core. Working with Erumpents is dangerous though and the hide is not always the most stable of cores, often exploding just like the creatures they are taken from. Fairy Wings: Fairies appear as miniature humans with insect wings. They have little intelligence, and are vain and quarrelsome. The use of their wings as a core is usually to temper the less-desirable properties of a second core, as on their own they are weak and unreliable. Fire Crab Shell Fragment: Fire crabs have jeweled shells and can shoot fire from their posterior. This core is becoming harder to find since the fire crab has been placed on the endangered magical creatures list as vulnerable. Griffin Feather/Fur: Griffen's are part eagle, part lion and they often symbolize protection and majesty. The griffen feather (or fur) is an excellent ward against curses and hexes and lends a natural boost to protective/shielding spells. Hippogriff Feather: A stubborn, headstrong core that demands respect from its user. Wands with this core are very strong when mastered, though difficult at nearly every turn during the learning process. Jarvey Fur: Small ferret like animals that can speak, however their speech consists solely of insults and expletives. This core tends to gravitate toward mouthy individuals who are unafraid to speak their mind. It's especially adept at curses and hexes. Jobberknoll Feather: This little bird makes no noise it's entire life until the moment of death in which it exudes one long cry consisting of every sound it's ever heard. This core is excellent for spells concerning memory. Mallowsweet: An herb used by centaurs to focus their stargazing abilities. This is most typically used as a dual core to sharpen the focus of another core. It retains some of its own ability to enhance divinatory skills. Phoenix Tail Feather: A bird which can be reborn in flames. This core is powerful and hard to counter when a spell is cast correctly. This core seeks out the brave. Unicorn Hair: Gentle, beautiful creatures known to be peaceful and innocent. This core is best for charms. It often seeks timid individuals, or those with hearts of gold.

The League of American Wizards (LAW): similar to the Ministry of Magic. Located in Washington DC. New York Association of Wizards (NYAW): a smaller body governing NY wizards, sort of like a branch office of LAW. Located in Albany, NY.
Outside Locations
Burnham City: A fictional city set somewhere in NY state. Moderately sized, it's a bustling center of commerce and activity. There are a fair share of tall buildings in the center of the city, including an 11 story apartment building (among other apartment buildings, but this is the tallest). There are two universities, one just outside of the city (a mostly closed, prestigious campus: Heaton University) and one inside the city located in several buildings (Burnham University). There is a mass transit system in place, buses and cabs and a small subway system. The law firm of Westerveldt & Parrish is located here and has a secret division devoted to wizarding law.
St George's Way
A set of shops lines the sleepy village of St George's Way. Tucked away in the mountains it is a magical sanctuary for wizards living in the Adirondack Park and students at Dresden Academy. Apple's Sweets: A sweetshop comparable to Hogsmeade's famous Honeydukes. Bard's Inn: A pleasant little inn on the edge of the Way, overlooking Lake George. It's bigger on the inside and can cater many guests (often hosting parents for special school events). Run by the vivacious Octavia Bard. Cafe Sur Le Lac: A small cafe with outdoor seating on the patio in the warmer months, and a second floor deck that's weatherproofed. Oglethorpe's Outdoor Emporium: For all your outdoor and sporting needs. Pennyworth Brewers: A shop for all your potions needs. Sells ingredients, cauldrons, and potion books. Scríbhneoir: A shop for all your writing needs. Sells quills, ink, inkpots, scrolls, etc. Stark's Wands: One of the premier wandshops of the Northeast. Owned by the Stark family time out of mind. Lael Stark deals in the common cores, but dabbles in more unique ones and has occasionally crafts wands with dual cores. His daughter Pepper has a talent for matching wands with witches and wizards on the first or second try. St George's Pub: A little pub tucked away in St George's Way. Serves the adult population of Huletts Landing. The Test Lab: A shop along the way; items for sale include owner Jacob De Vries's inventions, specimens and mounted animals, skulls and skeletons, and odd and hard to find books and potions. The middle floor is a combination workshop, experimental test area and alchemy/potions laboratory, but this is not open to the public.

School Grounds and Rules
Basic School Information
The school accepts students aged 11-18 Years 1-3 are considered like an American middle school. These students are simply called underclassmen. Years 4-7 are similar to American high school. Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors. The school has begun a limited university program that allows older students to stay on and continue advanced magical studies. Dresden Academy accepts foreign exchange students, but encourages them to be fluent in English. Exchange students stay for one year and are submitted to a curriculum similar to that of their own school (which sometimes puts them ahead or behind one year in a particular subject). Most students receive their letters in the summer before they'd begin school (between ages 10 or 11). The cut-off date for age is November 30th (so if a student turns 11 before November 30th they can begin that year).
Basic Layout
The school is comprised of several buildings and an extensive parcel of land. Most buildings are accessibility conscious in their design (with ramps and elevators, extra wide doors). Other provisions will be made for any students with different abilities. The school is relatively isolated from the surrounding community. As such the students are cut off from most muggle conveniences. Students are given precise lists of supplies to bring to school. Once monthly weekend trips are arranged to St George's Way; a little village higher up in the mountains with a plethora of distractions, but students must sign up to go in advance and have signed permission slips. Dresden relies on the student population to maintain the school. They do not hire cleaning staff for the dorms and have minimal auxiliary staff to maintain the grounds, cook meals, and maintain educational facilities. Students are doled out chore days in which they are responsible for a series of tasks (such as putting chairs on desks so the staff can clean the floor quicker, or cleaning their dorm bathroom).
School Term
Like most American schools, Dresden term starts in September (the week after labor day) and ends in late June with a long summer break in between. There are several smaller vacations interspersed throughout the year: Columbus Day (4 day weekend), Thanksgiving, Winter Holiday Break, Mid-winter Break, Spring Break. Arrangements are made for international or long distance students who cannot travel home over long breaks. Gameplay will be relatively real time. We can play non-school stuff over breaks, long-distance threads and the like. Google Calendar
Buildings
Dresden Hall The main hall containing the health facilities, the dining hall, a grand ballroom, the theatre (and accompanying studio theatre), a gymnasium, and the faculty and headmaster's offices. Some faculty, like the potions master, maintain their offices closer to their classrooms. Maple Hall Contains all the classrooms for the underclassmen and some offices for professors. Mulholland Hall The learning center. It is equipped with a library, computer lab (for those muggle minded individuals), individual study rooms (Carrels), and a study lab for students who need a little extra help. There is also a small student store here for last minute supplies should a student run out, as well as school related gear (Dresden sweatshirts, pins, and even bumper stickers for mom and dad's brooms). Putnam Memorial Lab An extended lab for Herbology studies. Washington Row A cluster of small, comfortable homes for faculty who do not want to commute.
Grounds
The Quidditch and Quodpot pitches are at the very back edge of the property and hidden from prying eyes by sight shields that work year round. There is another set of fields for muggle sports, which are popular among muggle born students. These include a football/soccer/lacrosse field surrounded by a track, a two net tennis court, and a baseball diamond. There is no swimming pool, as Lake George is nearby. St George's Farm is a large swathe of school land turned into a garden that is worked by students (some who volunteer and some who are punished). Much of the school's seasonal produce comes from St George's Farm and has made the school more sustainable than some of its counterparts in the country. There is also a decent sized greenhouse nearby.
Rules of Conduct for Students
Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner befitting a school for magical edification.
Curfew
Varies by house and age group. Curfew is 9 pm for 1-3 years, 11 pm for 4-7 years. University students have no curfew, though they are expected to observe quiet hours (which begin officially at 9pm). At curfew students must be in their dorm building. The house parent may determine if curfew pertains to being in their individual rooms and/or if common areas are off limits.
Detention
Students who do not conduct themselves well will be awarded detention. Detentions result in being assigned extra chores, or the chores no one signs up for voluntarily. * Whether or not students get caught in their behavior is at your discretion, however be reasonable (a fight in the middle of the hallway will get broken up quickly, a fight in the woods might go unnoticed). Typical punishment for fighting is 1 week of detention, getting caught having sex might put you on house arrest for a week (can't leave your dorm room after school hours) and a lecture from the school doctor, and so on. If you're not sure, ask a mod. As a side note: getting caught doing bad things makes for plot and scenes to play out. If you repeatedly skirt by with your characters not getting in trouble what's the fun? Where's the conflict?
Dress Code
School dress code must be adhered to during school hours (7:00am until 3:10pm). Dresden was the first American school to remove wizarding robes from the every day wardrobe, though they are still preferred in potions class and when the weather is very hot or very cold (as they can be charmed to cool or heat the body). Pants and skirts are black or gray and of an appropriate length. Jeans are not allowed during class hours. Ties or scarves are worn in the primary house color around the neck. Familiars
Students may have their familiars in their dorm room with them provided that they are A) small B) harmless - this is debatable C) well kept. Snakes in terrariums are okay. Students are encouraged to partake in the wide array of after school and weekend activities offered by the school. If students are in multiple clubs they may rotate their attendance to fit them all in (some clubs are more demanding than others). Art Sponsored by Pete Rosenthal. Meets in the arts section of Oak Hall, every afternoon after classes. Not every student shows up every day. Allows students access to the dark room outside of art class, and other equipment they wouldn't be able to use otherwise. Choir Sponsored by Marianne LaForte Meets every other day (3:30-4:30) opposite orchestra. They practice in the grand ballroom. At the end of each semester the students host a concert with the orchestra. Cooking Club Sponsored by Seamus Morgendorfer and Irene Hulett Meets on Monday afternoons in the Dresden Hall kitchen, whenever Seamus shows up. Wizards Chess A club that meets specifically to play Wizards Chess. Meets on Wednesdays in the Champlain House Underclassman Common Room.
Specialty Clubs
Events Committee These students arrange school dances and parties and consult with their school government for funds. Held as meetings are called. Honor Society Mentored by Clive Montgomery For gifted, advanced students to receive proper accolades for their achievements. Students must be recommended by a professor. School Government These students are elected to their positions by their peers. They help make decisions for their class and dole out the class budget to sponsor various club events and school wide functions. School Paper Mentored by Pike Setzer Meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday after dinner (depending on student availability) in Setzer's office in Mulholland Hall. Students are assigned articles to write for the monthly school paper. More often than not meetings just turn into Pike babbling about the good old days of Gonzo reporting; which is why they have three meetings a week. School Yearbook Mentored by Seamus Morgendorfer Meets bimonthly throughout the year on Sunday afternoons. Students are given assignments to arrange the book (candid portraits, club photos, student quotes, so on) and receive a free copy of the yearbook for their participation.
Sports
Game outcomes will be decided by a roll of the dice at players' request.
Cheerleading Coached by Pilar Olivier and Maria Morgendorfer Cheerleaders cheer for their house team. The squads are comprised of all years and all levels of ability. They often practice during muggle sports and rotate coaches. House teams flip a coin to decide who cheers for Quidditch teams. Intramural Sports Competitions are held between dorms. Much more casual than the other organized sports, usually supervised by the participating house parents. The competitions are usually held on Sunday afternoons on the muggle sports field. Muggle Sports Coached by Val Crinshlow Depending on the time of year and the interest, this extracurricular changes on the whims of the coach and the students. Meetings are held Tuesday and Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning on the muggle sports field. Quidditch (more info) Coached by Frank Smith (both teams) The original from HP. Not as popular in the US. There are two teams that play each other. The teams meet biweekly on opposite days to practice on the Quidditch pitch. They hold games every other week on Saturday afternoons. When they can arrange a game with another school they travel on the weekend or host that school's team for the afternoon. Quodpot (more info) Like American football, because we just have to be different. Each house has a team and their own coach. Each team has their own practice days and times that their coach signs up for. Each year culminates in a cup game between the two top scoring houses. The homecoming game takes place between last years cup teams and doesn't count toward the standings. There is usually a game every Saturday night on the Quodpot pitch.

Classes and Schedule

Schedules
Each day is divided into 10 periods of 40 minutes (with 10 minutes in between to allow students time to get to classes). 6th period is divided into two 20 minute sections (to cover lunch). The opposite half of 6th period is a mandatory study hall for all students. 11th period is for students taking Astronomy. It's scheduled according to sunset. Classes are taught for the full length of the year. Core classes are taught to the entire class year (not divided by house, since the school is small). Electives are taught throughout the day and available for all students to fit into their schedules as they like.
Years 1-3 have a set schedule of classes. Years 4-7 have a flexible schedule around some required core classes. 4th years (freshmen) can take 1 elective class, or opt for 1 free period. 5th years (sophomores) can take 2 electives. They are allowed one free period. 6th years (juniors) can take 6 electives/advanced classes. They are allowed two free periods. 7th years (seniors) can take 6 electives/advanced classes. They are allowed three free periods.
Of note: It probably won't come up in game which period each class is. It's just nice to know which classes your character is taking in a given year. Does not occur during the regularly scheduled day and can be taken by anyone. Muggle Studies (4th, or 5th year) Taught by: Christine Allen A study of cultural differences between muggles and wizards. Recommended for students born to strictly wizarding families. Divination I and II (5th, 6th, and/or 7th year) Taught by: Octavia Whalon Div I is a basic canvas of divinatory systems and practices and recommended to 5th years interested in Divination. Div II is a further study into divination practices with the use of tools (such as arithmancy, runes, tarot, I-Ching); it is recommended to 6th years and must follow Divination I. Language Arts I, II, and III (5th, 6th, and/or 7th year) Taught by: Jaime Hernandez Offers a range of languages for study depending on student interest. Languages may be studied in sequence from I to III; students can opt out of further study at the end of each year. Magical Crafting (4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th year) Taught by: Pete Rosenthal A class which goes over the basic techniques in building magical instruments. Students get theoretical study in the first semester and practical application in the second. Music (4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th year) Taught by: Marianne LaForte Basic study covers a catalog of muggle and wizarding music for students not inclined to play an instrument or sing. Ritual Magic (5th, 6th, or 7th year) Taught by: Brennan Weeks The study of ritualized, ceremonial magic. Spell Theory (5th, 6th, or 7th year) Taught by: Clive Montgomery A class which covers the creation of spells, The class culminates in a group project to create a spell. Lecture. Combative Magic (6th or 7th year) Taught by: Amalia Vass Akin to dueling club, except that students can get class credit for it. Students must have a parent or guardian sign a waver in order to participate in this often dangerous class.

Advanced Potions I and II (6th and/or 7th year) Taught by: Templeton Morse Advanced study in difficult/complicated potions. Students can take one or two years. Advanced Transfiguration I and II (6th and/or 7th year) Taught by: Claudia Anderson Advanced forms of transfiguration. Students can take one or two years. Advanced Divination (7th year only) Taught by: Mother Criss A study for those with "the gift" of second sight. It can only be taken after Divination I and II are completed. Wandless (7th year only) Taught by: James Walsh For determined, gifted students to learn magic and spells without the use of a wand. Animagus Study (Offered in Fall 2010, Spring 2011: read description) Taught by: Claudia Anderson For those truly gifted students who may have an animagus form. This class is only offered every other year for juniors and seniors. Apparation Study (17 yrs and older) Taught by: James Walsh For students 17 years or older. Begins with side along apparation until a student is prepared to practice on their own. Akin to Driver's Ed. Students cannot test for apparation until they've passed the class. Three weekend seminar course offered on a rotating basis. Practical application. Pass/fail.
University Classes
Table of students signed up for university. Founded in 2005, university is a relatively new experiment at the Dresden Academy. Essentially the university program is mentored independent study for advanced students who want continued, intensive study in a particular subject. Should the program prove viable it will certainly be expanded. Any current faculty is available as a mentor in their field. These students are required to have a weekly or bi-monthly meeting with their mentor(s) to oversee their studies, but are otherwise trusted to be responsible for their work. In 2007 a new facet was added to the program to enrich the student's education. Students are now required to act as teaching assistants for their mentor once or twice a week (though they can and are encouraged to TA every day). While helping in class they're expected to wear their uniforms, but the rest of the time uniforms are not required. They are usually assigned one class to work with for the length of the year, though they are sometimes invited to sit in on other classes for the experience. First semester students are encouraged to work with core classes, but the truly gifted are offered TA positions in advanced classes (or by mentor discretion). Mechanics wise, mentors can be shared, but at present there may only be one TA per class. This will be decided on a first come, first served basis. A mentor may choose to pass a student off to the core professor as a TA.

Dresden Academy Houses

Dresden Houses
Sorting into the Dresden houses occurs over the summer when new students receive their acceptance letter and decide to attend. At present all sorting is done by Mother Criss who has a brief interview with each student at the school before proclaiming the house into which they belong. She uses her divinatory gifts to guide her decisions, but sometimes makes conscious choices at her discretion that result in a student being placed in a house that doesn't seem like the perfect fit but will benefit them far greater. Headmistress Hulett has yet to find another system of sorting that works for her school, though she worries what will happen when Mother Criss moves on.
Geniuses take comfort here. Logic and science abounds. Champlain House is represented by the dolphin as their mascot, an intelligent and fast-learning animal. Students show their pride in royal blue and gold, and look to Claudia Anderson as their House parent.	The darker talents emerge from Clemons. Clemons House is represented by the lizard as their mascot, cunning survivalists in the animal kingdom. Students show their pride in green and gray. Douglas West is their House parent.

Creativity reigns supreme in Hudson House. Represented by the monkey, a mischievous and clever animal. Students show their pride in purple and silver. Their House parent is the wacky and madly creative Pete Rosenthal.	For the brave, pioneering spirit. Hulett House carries the lion as their mascot; King of the jungle. Students show their pride in red and black. Their house parent is the quietly brave Orenthal Langley.

The loyal folk who work tirelessly toward their goal. Putnam House is represented by the bumble bee, an underestimated powerhouse. Students show their pride in yellow and white. Their house parent is hard-working Divya Singh.	Only the most advanced students can call University dorm their home. Founded in 2005, this house is reserved for students who have moved beyond their basic education and are prepared to move into higher learning with a heavy degree of personal responsibility and commitment. Their house is supervised by Gerlinde Von Brandt.

Premise

The Basics
Dresden Academy is a role playing game for as many players as we see fit. It will take place over a few months and has no intentional end date. If we decide to stop playing the game will end. Plot is open ended. Characters may have their own agendas. As a group of players we tend to be organic in our play. We do not typically use pre-made story lines; generally we allow plot to happen as we develop our characters.

This game is physically set in Huletts Landing near Lake George, New York. It is metaphysically set in the Harry Potter Universe.

We will only play Original Characters (and no characters based on or related to HP canon).

Mostly this is a high school/early college sort of game. We might have monthly events (dances, trips to St. George's Way, etc.), or overarching plots if there's demand. At the moment most plot will be player generated.

The Story Not Yet Revealed
There is an undercurrent of political shift at Dresden. Jillian and Irene Hulett have been quietly tussling for control of the school. Jillian, the current headmistress is entirely unaware of the machinations which her sister may launch to wrest her position from her. Should Irene take over the faculty will experience a tremendous shuffle (and possibly stricter guidelines) which will certainly trickle down to student life. There may be even further reaching implications to how the school is run and future curriculum, endangering the university program and unconventional subjects. This plot will probably develop further in the 2011-2012 school year.
