Fabric danced amidst the breeze of the open window as Basil stood perplexed and watched.  Yesterday his windows had been bare, and today they'd been dressed up with curtains.  It wasn't the first change he'd stumbled upon either.  There was the day his couch mysteriously vanished and was replaced by a leather sofa and two matching arm chairs.  Another time he left to get a pint and came back to find the walls painted and the dishes switched out.  He'd been gone not half an hour.  Honestly, Basil wasn't sure how she did it.  He did know how she paid for it all, however.  It was Rose who'd found his vault key, buried under an unwashed pile of socks.  That day he remember well, it was the day he first stumbled across her at the Ministry and brought her home.  She took one look at the festering socks, marched over the the nearest window, opened it up, and dumped the whole lot out.  The key was left behind and she pocketed it claiming he wasn't responsible enough.  Basil hadn't argued, knowing she was right. He did go downstairs and throw the socks in a bin.

Three and a half weeks.  That's how long Rose had been rearranging his cupboards.  The first now held plates when it used to host his cereal stash.  The second was bowls instead of cans.  Giving up the search for a snack, Basil looked around and wondered what else his house guest had changed.  That's what he called her, not having another name for it.  They'd been drinking the first night and he offered her his bed.  She shooed him to the couch - not what he would have hoped for, but it earned him another night with his best friend.  The next day she came back, and the next, and the next.  And some days, she didn't leave at all.  If he wasn't petrified of driving her back to the bloody rainforest, he'd dare to ask if she ever planned to leave.  Still, save sleeping on the couch, it was a dream come true.  When she wasn't off with her family, Basil had Rose all to himself.

"Any other surprises?" He mumbled, leaving the kitchen and setting off to look for her.  The lack of snack made him grumpy, but the sight of her Rose always alleviated his moods.  Basil made his way to the bedroom that was now more hers than his, down to her clothing replacing his on the hangers.  It would comfort him if her suitcases weren't still neatly stacked in the corner of the room.  He found the door open and Rose on the bed.  Basil didn't recognize the bedding beneath her and wouldn't admit that it looked a lot nicer than the one he'd picked out.  Instead, he flopped unceremoniously by her side, shoes and all, reclining against folded arms.  "How much did it cost me this time?"
