She had hopes, dreams, and aspirations like any other woman. She’d been raised by two wonderful parents, but at the age of 18 had lost her father. She lived with her mother until it was no longer an option. The family had always been very close. They weren’t poor, but they weren’t rich. They were middle-class. Happily middle class. They loved with all their hearts, were family oriented, and always tried to be there for anyone and everyone.

Eliana had gone off to college and discovered it wasn’t for her. After finishing up her associates in business, she’d found a job at the town hall. She had become a secretary. It was this secretarial position that led her to a name she‘d never be able to forget. One that would continuously run through her mind for years to come. A man who was reckless, dangerous, and over all exhilarating. It was going to be a name that when it graced her tongue, she’d feel that same butterfly effect as if it was a first kiss. His name was Samuel Guzman.

Samuel Guzman. A ‘successful businessman‘, a bit of a trouble maker, but such a charm no one could resist. Those were all things that had attracted Eliana Santos to the older man. He was smart, funny, kind, and something that just told her she couldn‘t say no. He smiled at her like no other man had. He made her feel like she was worth something, and their friendship just seemed to continue blossoming. She couldn’t even imagine a life with out him after that. Their relationship/friendship could have turned toxic, seeing as Samuel's choice of work could have influenced Eliana in ways that would drastically change her life.

It was at her work Christmas party that Samuel had mentioned anything sexual to Eliana. He had told her how absolutely ravishing she looked, and that was all she had prayed to hear from this man. The two had only come as friends, after all she didn’t want to attend alone. A couple of drinks in, and she was taking him home. It didn’t matter than, what is back story was she wanted him. The lust inside of her had taken over, and she wanted him more and more as each moment passed. They finally arrived at her home, a one bedroom apartment. The two could hardly keep their hands off each other.

In one night, a life could be changed. That life would not be just Eliana’s but it would be Samuel's also. They had been careless, and disregarded the opportunity to use a condom. Eliana with her heavy Hispanic accent, and whispering all those sweet nothings in her native tongue. It had just been an accident. An accident she would pay for many months later. A surprise, but nothing less than a beautiful gift.

The day Eliana found out about her pregnancy, was the day she quit seeing Samuel regularly. It wasn’t because she didn’t enjoy being around him, because boy did she ever. The thoughts though, that he could have been doing things that were dangerous, it brought distraught to her. She couldn’t look in his eyes, and know she was carrying something so innocent and so precious and allow his dangerous life-style to continue. He’d continued to talk with her, that was until Emilie was born. He’d come to the hospital, saw the darling girl, but that had been it. Their one night relationship over, as quickly as it had begun.

----------------------------------------------

Life wasn’t always easy on Eliana, but when she went into labor it just became more treacherous. The labor was intense. It was full of ups and downs. The thought of even having to have a cesarean was in the future, if she (Eliana) didn’t dilate in time. The only person with the young woman, was her own mother, Maria Santos. With in the next 2 hours, a little girl by the name of Emilie Marie Guzman was born. The day was September 10, 1992. The time about one o’clock in the morning, and the scream of the baby, was all that settled the new mother.

Emilie was given her father’s name, not her mothers. It was something that would only be fair for the young girl to have, since she wasn’t going to be apart of his life for a long time. Eliana wanted her daughter to know, that she was never created in vain, or out of spite. She wanted her to know she was created in lust, and perhaps one side was love.

When Emilie started school, she was living with her mother, and grandmother. A house hold that had taught her both English and Spanish as first languages. It wasn’t a bad thing for the child to grow up bilingual, as it was part of her heritage on both sides. Her grandmother never spoke to her in English, only in Spanish. Her mother, depending the topic chose to speak to her in both. The young girl loved being one of the only people in her class to communicate in two languages. It would both benefit the young girl later in life, and cause her some trouble.

A very bright girl was Emilie, with those gorgeous chocolate brown eyes, and a happy go lucky attitude. She made her way through school with out flaw. That was until her mother fell ill. When Emilie was fourteen, her mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. They’d managed to take out what they could, to give the woman a chance of survival, but at alas, right after Emilie turned 15 she lost her mother.

Before her mothers death, there was a phone call. A chance to reach out so that Emilie wasn’t alone in her time of need. The call was from Samuel Guzman. The father of the beautiful young brunette. She was angry with him at first. She was angry that he didn’t want to be there for her as her father. She wondered if he even thought about her. Did he care enough to even think about that? About her feelings? All these questions raced through her mind.

The death hit Emilie like a ton of bricks. She thought that her mother would see her graduate. See her succeed in life. That was when things took a turn for the worse. Emilie while still talking to Samuel, had been placed in her grand-mothers care. Maria was a good grandmother, there was no doubt, but she had lost sight of what her grand-daughter was doing. She was growing older after all, and more tired. It wouldn’t be long before she couldn’t care for the girl any longer, and she’d have to find a new home with Eliana’s sister, Emile’s Aunt Elise.

Emilie had started seeking comfort in things such as oxy-cotton, vicodin, and boys. Anyone willing or promising to take/ease the pain, Emilie would take on. She wanted the opportunity to stop feeling. She wanted to be numb. She hated feeling that she’d lost the only person in this world that loved her. She had, had one single parents, that had loved her, and she left. She knew her grandmother still did, but it wasn't her mom. The feelings of resentment and hurt showed through with every act, every pill, every promiscuous opportunity taken.

As soon as Maria found out about this, she tried to do something. She tried to make Emilie stop on her own, but the elder woman was just not as strong as she used to be. It was then, that it was Emlie’s turn to go to her Aunt’s for another chance at life. The only reason that Maria had found out about anything, was that Emlie had throw away a pregnancy test (while high) into the garbage. Maria had found test, and was livid. It had been the last straw. The test wasn't Emlie’s but it was her friend's, and it read the word pregnant.

Moving in with Aunt Elise was the best thing that could ever have happened to Emilie. She was currently 17, and just barely was able to graduate high school. It wasn’t because she wasn’t smart, it was because of all of the things she was doing instead of homework. Elise got her to work though. She was just what the girl needed. A stable person, love, affection, and someone to talk too. She didn't always let Emilie get away with things, but she did let somethings go. Maria had tried, but she too was morning the loss, and just was not strong enough any more.

As Emilie continued down the right path, she was growing closer and closer to Samuel. It was a friendship more than a parent/child relationship, but it was one that Emilie wanted to continue. She found out while attending community college, that Samuel was moving to Charlotte. It was then she decided, that she too would move. She would transfer to a big four year school, and be closer to this man that she hoped one day to call her father. While he was just that, she was not ready to use that terminology.

Transferring in her Sophomore year, in the spring was just what fit her for her. Elise had helped her along the way also. There was another reason that Emilie had chosen UNC, she had a brother. A half brother, but a brother no less. His name was Isaiah. Both Emilie and Isaiah had never really spoken before this point. It was on both ends that it hadn’t happened either. She was afraid to reach out, and busied herself so she didn’t have too. With all that Emilie's life had been until this point, no one could blame her for being nervous to get close to anyone.
