There you are with your amazing ideas, your cutting edge philosophy, your wise objectivity….you are the future. But wait. It’s not all eco-friendly in there is it? Somewhere in your head is a laboratory, a space station or the world wide web. Your interest in others can be a tad chilly when it comes down to one-on-one. You encourage them, they respond, you feel claustrophohic. Intimacy? Just say no. Floundering about in the swamps of the human heart slows you down. And seriously, you do have worlds to conquer. [link]

Sexuality: Bisexual, though he has been kissed before he really doesn't have any clue about sex besides what he sees in the movies and to him it doesn't seem very appealing. However, after seeing so much of it, he has become rather desensitized to the whole idea that sex is for the person you love. Nonetheless, he's still a virgin because he just so paranoid and can't get past his trust issues.

Role in company: Editing - Audio & Visual, Video & Photography.
PB: Tomohisa Yamashita

Background History: Shino is the only, and decidedly unplanned, child of Shibi Aburame and his wife. He was born in Prince George’s County Hospital in Maryland and spent most of his life in the area. His parents had never fancied themselves as well… parents and that fact played a major role in manner in which he was raised. It’s a wonder the boy is still alive really. This of course is a fact that is kept highly confidential as the Aburames had always been highly confidential people. On the outside, however, Shino was raised as what some people would call a military brat only with less moving around. Though his father wasn’t exactly a hardened military man, he did do his fair share of traveling before he married Shino’s mother and did his best to attempt to settle down in suburban Maryland. However, Shibi excelled in the sciences and because of that his superiors eventually agreed that the man would be more useful in their laboratories than in the military ranks. Thus, in the end, Shino’s father spent more time away from his family located in offices and labs in nearby Washington D.C.

This left Shino mostly in the care of his mother. While his father all but pushed a life focused on education and of course mathematics and science, his mother had a different view. She’d always been a very strange woman of varied and swiftly changing moods but mostly Shino’s mother taught music at a grade school near the air force base. She often enjoyed wine and taking her work home with her. Neither of those things were done in moderation and never had been. She’d drank and done ‘other things’ well into her pregnancy. Yet, another wonder that Shino even made into the world. Her actions didn’t leave the boy completely untouched however as numerous health issues popped up as time went on. The most prevalent was a chronic pain condition that had Shino taking pretty strong doses of pain medication from a very young age.

Shino’s mother attempted to make up for her pitiful begins by spending as much time with Shino as she could. She started Shino on the piano when he was only old enough to do nothing more than bang away at the keys. Luckily for their neighbors, it didn’t take long for Shino to grasp the basic concepts of music and musicianship and excelled quickly with most any instrument his mother put at his fingertips.

Shino was of course closest to his mother. Odd though she could be, she was affectionate and encouraging and Shino grew to value her company above all. He was a momma’s boy in the very sense of the word. Even if he didn’t have an obvious preference, he was not the type of boy to disappoint when it came to either of his parents. Shino took to his education as adeptly as he did music. He was tested and was deemed to have a very high IQ at a very young age. Something his parents took great pride in and were very grateful for. Even if Shino never made much of it himself, his classmates did. There were a few bullies here and there that attempted to make his life difficult because of it. But he had always been a very placid and easy-going boy so he mostly ignored the taunts when he could and went about his days with out complaint.

This all changed when Shino was about 10 years old. His mother’s ‘eccentricities’ had finally gotten her in trouble at work and ended with her losing her job. Shino started to notice that his mother’s bad moods seemed to last longer than they usually did. Not to mention the fact that his parents’ usually quietly polite disagreements had noticeably increased in decibel level. Nonetheless, Shino kept his head down and mind focused on his school work and practice, practice, practice. At the time, his mother still made a point to make it out of bed for piano practice everyday afterall.

As Shino got older, he started to develop interests that were all his own. He started to show interest in computers, photography and film. Something he mother quietly encouraged by providing him with a camcorder for his eleventh birthday. Shino mostly just filmed things that occurred in his normal everyday life. His mother seemed proud of him nonetheless. His father remained as indifferent about it as he was with seemingly everything else. As long as it didn’t interfere with his school work there was no reason for him to put a stop to it.

And life went on.

Then one day twelve year old Shino came home and didn’t find his mother there. He hadn’t found his father there either but that was had been the norm so he hadn’t thought much of it. However, it was still strange that his mother had missed practice for the first time since ever. It wasn’t until the next morning that he came down stairs to find his father sitting alone in the kitchen. His father sat him down and calmly explained to him that his mother had died. Whatever his father had said after that, Shino couldn’t quite remember. He did recall that though Shibi seemed quite sad he also appeared to be strangely embarrassed by the entire thing. Shino didn’t practice much after that.

Things changed a bit in school. Shino didn’t really feel much like studying or doing much else besides sleeping. His teachers noticed, one teach in particular that took a certain liking to the boy. He was there since Shino’s mother couldn’t be and when he father didn’t bother. Sometimes it made Shino a bit uncomfortable but most of the time the boy reveled in the attention. Once he was older he realized the relationship his teach had with him was wholly inappropriate but he doesn’t look back on it as a negative. It was actually the only time in his life he felt most cared for.

Eventually though his father took notice of Shino’s grades. Then there was the therapy. Although, he didn’t necessarily like it, Shino could see his father’s point. His mother had just died rather suddenly and quite mysteriously. Shino had noticed the change in his own mood. The sadness and lack of energy for anything besides sleep was troubling. And it had helped. His grades had improved. His father seemed a little less disappointed but nonetheless as distant as ever. Shino quickly figured out that it had more to do with the fact that Shino had seemed to need the counseling in the first place rather than the fact that it had appeared to be effective.

The boy silently prayed for college everyday. It would be his chance to get out of his quiet and solemn home and away from the rumors and looks. He didn’t want to end up like his mother after all. Luckily, the time came sooner than even he had expected. He graduated from high school at sixteen and was enrolled in college as far away from his father and the entire eastern coast of the United States as possible. It wasn’t quite California but he figured Arizona was far enough away. He did pretty well on his own at first. His grade stayed high and as long as they did his father continued to fund his education. That was of course until Junior year.

College life could be stressful all on its own. It certainly didn’t help when you were a double major and had anxiety issues. Not that Shino had made the fact known to his father or anyone else as long as he could help it. But eventually, his roommate offered him something that was supposed to help and at the end of his rope Shino took him up on it.

And so it started. Shino eventually developed his own ways of dealing with his issues. If he was high he just didn’t care. It he preferred to spend most of his time not caring. He’d try pretty much anything he didn’t have to inhale or inject. However, unbeknownst to him, his preferred coping mechanism was the very same that his mother had employed most of her life. Not to mention, that it had directly contributed to the fact that hers had turned out to be as short as it had. Shino had been foolish, naïve and terribly ill prepared and it ended up costing him a great deal in the end. Mostly though, it had cost him his education and what little of a relationship he still had with his father.

Shino left school but certainly not due to his own choosing. His father offered to let him keep his car and even gave him some money to start off on his own. The only condition was that Shino left and never looked back. So he’d accepted because really what other choice did he have. Packing everything he had in his truck, Shino headed toward the only job prospect he had at the moment. It was some place called Feel Good Inc. They liked what they saw of his school work and offered him a job as an editing apprentice within the company. Shino couldn’t even begin to guess why they give a job to a guy who hadn’t even been able to graduate but it was certainly better than any other of the nonexistent opportunities he had going for him.

Personality, Likes & Dislikes: Though a very intelligent and gifted young man, Shino usually fails miserably when it comes to even the simplest of meaningful human interaction. He was just about born awkward and his parents didn’t do much to teach him how to connect with others outside of the tiny family unit. His difficulty reaching out socially could also possibly be attributed to his uncanny ability of being so blunt sometimes it unintentionally hurts, all the while being as polite as ever. Thanks to his upbringing he’s never really grasped the concept of tact, unfortunately giving him a seemingly emotionless temperament.

Those that have the interest required to look further will find that Shino does seem to really love technology and music. His apartment my not be spacious but the every bit of it available is occupied by either some type of instrument or something that requires electricity to operate. He also has quite the collection of CDs and DVDs. He’s not so secretly a bit of a movie buff and his extensive collection is of course alphabetically cataloged. It anyone touches it besides him, he tends to get a little twitchy. Shino can be a tad obsessive compulsive when it comes to his things. He’s very meticulous about where he places them. The boy likes order and rules and such thing that he deems to just make life less complicated.

Shino’s need for order is a part of the reason he speaks the way he does. Blunt and straight to the point means there’s less of a chance for confusion. Of course it doesn’t always go as planned however and it has attributed to Shino's reluctance to interact with others would be that his speech patterns can be a bit trying. Because really sometimes people just can’t handle the truth. Shino’s known to choose his words very carefully and always with purpose. However, it's his unusual way of phrasing his thoughts that seem to cause most the trouble. His way of speaking has been described by some as boring, unenthusiastic and after long periods just really annoying. It goes with out saying that he tries to do as little of it as possible.

Shino isn’t fond of large crowds. The reason being is that he doesn’t really like being touched unless it is absolutely necessary. Having the tendency to be come visibly agitated when someone delves too deeply into his personal space, Shino mostly keeps to himself when he is able. In fact his choice in clothing is directly related to his issue with touch. His preference for hiding himself behind dark sunglasses and dark clothing, consisting of mostly oversized hooded sweatshirts and jackets only adds to his curiously mysterious or sometimes down right creepy exterior. Even he will admit that his chosen wardrobe is an attempt to hide what he believes in a body that is undesirable. Shino is all long arms and legs. He sees him self as too tall for an almost too lean frame; too lanky and pale to show so much skin. He prefers this façade for the most part due to some pretty spectacular failures in past ventures of interpersonal interactions.

It turns out not to be much of a issue most of the time as he has quite a few quirks that keep people at distance for the most part. His interest in insects and his tendency toward cold sarcasm does not help matters either. Although, it may not seem like it, Shino really would like to connect with someone one way or another. He’s prone to moodiness but the one that comes up most is a despairing sense of loneliness that he just can’t seem to do anything about.

Shino is a vegetarian out of necessity than out of any moral ideals. He’s been cursed with a pretty poor health. Which not only left him with chronic pain but a pretty poor digestive track. He just cannot process meat and even though he’s had it before it’s just not worth it to include it in his regular diet. Dairy products are also pretty much a no-no even if he does indulge from time to time.

Likes: Photography, film, watching movies, listening to music, playing piano, playing his guitar, learning to play new instruments, reading, animals, insects, camping, campfires, chemistry, pills, ice cream, honey mustard, coffee, tea, fruit and fruit juice, french fries, vegetables, oatmeal raisin cookies.

Dislikes: People, children, frogs, flavored water, pills, ice cream, ketchup, pain, having to explain something more than once, strong smelling food, being underestimated, backlog, loudness, driving, traffic, small talk, crowds, shopping and enclosed spaces.

Current Homelife: Shino lives on the right side of a duplex, which is a very cozy nest of a studio apartment. It's full of earth tones and dim lighting. You’ll need to watch your step around here. Not so much that it’s messy or cluttered, it’s tidy enough but it’s just rather small. The bed which clearly gets the most use in the apartment is right underneath the only visible window in the place and is pretty decent size. It’s a mere foot away from the only other place to sit in the apartment, the couch. Both the bed & couch are in clear view of the TV, 42 in flat screen LCD which also gets a lot of use when Shino is actually home. There are gaming consoles, video games, DVDs & CDs stored neatly underneath it. The DVDs & CDs also share various storage spaces on the three bookshelves Shino has managed to cram in the place. He keeps his clothes and other stuff in his very tiny closet and underneath his bed in storage bins. There’s also a small coffee table buried under neat stacks of books and magazines. The kitchen is just big enough to fit a full sized fridge and a small stove/oven with very minimal cabinet space. He’s moved a store bought pantry in at the expense of the only other window in the apartment.

More Info:

Shino’s hair is naturally dark brown and very curly but there had been some experimentation with flatirons and color from time to time.

Shino wears prescription glasses and contacts, the shades are not prescription but necessary do to light sensitivity. He alternates between contacts, glasses, and shades when needed.

Shino drives a 2008 Ford Expedition. His father gave it to him as a graduation/college present and so he’d have a way to get around when he was away at college. Surprisingly, he’s been allowed to keep it even though he’s no longer attending.

Shino grew up speaking Japanese with is father and English with is mother. It was sort of way of bonding with each of them. Thus, he’s pretty fluent in both. Although, he doesn’t make a habit of speaking Japanese much at all now though. He also knows some very basic Italian due to hearing it from his mother from time to time growing up. She had made an attempt at teaching him when he was still very young but gave up soon after.

Piano is by far Shino’s favorite instrument to play but he can neither afford or fit one in his teeny apartment. It makes him sad but he makes due with frequent visits to a local music store that lets him bum around on theirs. His second favorite is the guitar which luckily does fit in his apartment. He also keeps on in his office at work.

When she was still pregnant, Shino's mother chose the name Dante for him. His father wasn't too keen on the idea and eventually she relented but only if she got to chose his middle name. Shino's middle initial is D and you'll have a pretty hard time getting him to admit what the D stands for.
