He grew up in a goblin culture where power was admired and terror ruled. The title of Goblin King was never handed down, it was taken and earned and kept by way of terror. Goblins who opposed the King were made example of if they failed through cruel punishments and Goblin Kings were were de-throned were either killed in the fray or executed by the new Goblin King. No one ever gave up the title willingly, no one ever tried to sneak away in the middle of the night.

Bartleby had been the leader of one of the largest goblin armies and lived well, a high court life with all the benefits. He had a wife and seven children. He was the Goblin King's trusted advisor and ally... or at least the Goblin King thought he was. But Bartleby was ambitious and had his eyes set on the title of Goblin King for himself. Though he was ambitious and all together selfish, he wanted to bring a different sort of rule to the land of Goblins. His brother's had always picked on him for being too nice or not bloody thirsty enough. In truth, Bartleby was an idealist, he wanted to bring peace to the scorched land but not by peaceable means. He was the commander of a fierce army and mightily skilled in battle.

With his own forces Bartleby lead a revolt against the Goblin King that ended in devastation. They struck swiftly but it was not enough to deter the Goblin King and his forces. The conflict stretched from one midnight storming to a month long battle. By the end of the first month Bartleby's forces had dwindled dramatically, they were going to loose unless Bartleby could convince the King otherwise but seeing as though diplomacy was not an option, Bartleby and his forces lost. They were captured and their families were rounded up.

First the families were put to death and the soldiers were forced to watch as their wives, husbands, and children were executed. Bartleby lost everything. It was in that moment of pure loss that Bartleby's youngest child who was dying in a pyre used all her magic to transport her father to another land. One second he was staring in hopelessness at the burning corpses before him, hearing the screams of the innocent and the next he was standing in front of a Taxi in America whose horn was blaring.

The culture shock was enough to set Bartleby into flight mode. He ran as fast as he could, trying to dodge people and cars (he of course didn't learn the proper terminology until much later). He found himself tumbling into an abandoned house in a ghost town called Charlaine. There were few souls there and it seemed safe and away from all the chaos. He hid himself away for years until a small part-human creature crawled into his building and started bugging him with questions. The child reminded him of his youngest daughter who has saved him from death and he couldn't help but begrudgingly love the little girl, even with her weird human-type ears. It wasn't long before the little girl, Cam (as he soon learned) began dragging him out into their small, peculiar world. He learned of the other residents of the seeming ghost town and even babysits Cam from time to time.

Bartleby is a somewhat cranky and not particularly sociable but he's still reeling over the guilt and burning with regret, his past is haunted and try as he might, he could never let it go.

They were excited to finally have a perfect little girl in their lives and her parents raised her the way they wanted her to be and just ignored the parts of her that they didn't want to acknowledge. They completely missed the signs that their daughter was different. She was a perfect little princess in their minds even if that's not the person she was. Nicole was pushed into a little mold by both her parents and when she came to them with nightmares and with strange stories she was told that it was all in her head.

Nicole's talents started developing very early in her life and she was mostly afraid of them because she didn't understand them and her parents insisted it was in her head. She could hear what other people were thinking and strange things were always happening around her but she went through it alone, feeling like she couldn't talk to anyone about it. She holed herself up as a child and let her parents play dolly with her. As she grew older though, she became more distant and started to rebel. When she turned fourteen she chopped off all her hair and started wearing men's clothing. She started getting into trouble at school, skipping class, and taking cigarette breaks in the bathroom. She was constantly in detention and getting suspended. At sixteen, after her parents tried to force her to go to boarding school, she ran away from home.

She changed her name to Nic and traveled all over the country, drifting from town to town, never really knowing what she was looking for until in 2003 when she met a small Corgi dog. The dog followed her down the street until she finally stopped and acknowledged his presence. She asked him what he wanted and not expecting an answer she continued walking down the street until a little voice told her that he was to be her familiar. Nic turned around with a raised eyebrow and stared at the dog bewildered. "What?" was her only response. The small dog tipped his head to the side and said "I'm Bartholomew and you're Nic Hodges. I'm your familiar." She nodded dumbly and motioned for him to follow her, she figured she was loosing her dog damn mind when she thought he smiled at her. He patted alongside her happily until they got back to her small apartment. When they were there he explained to her that she was a witch and there were others out there like her and they were waiting.

Nic and Bartholomew set out from there the next day with a new purpose. It was the first thing that had made sense to her in a long time. He taught her how to use her gift and how to clear her mind of all the voices from the people around her. They moved from city to city, coven to coven until they found what felt right in a small, abandoned town called Charlaine.

She learned at a young age to control her powers and transformations and so when she was a teenager, the whole family broke away from the pack and moved into Burnham city where they could try to mainstream. They had always just wanted to be a normal family and ignore their heritage but one can only avoid nature for so long. Since they moved out of the pack, they were banished for life and if they tried to return they would be attacked until the fled or were killed.

When Lainey was fifteen she had her first boyfriend and as the story goes one thing lead to another... and Lainey bit him. The boy bled to death before the transformation could take place and so there was blood on her hands. Lainey and her parents covered up the accidental death and tried to ignore that it happened by Lainey never trusted herself again. She did her best to move on from the incident, they moved to the smaller town of Pleasantview and tried to start over. It was here that Lainey met two brothers who's family had chosen to separate from the pack as well so they could mainstream.

Lainey and the boys, Zane and Dylan, were fast friends, teaching each other everything they knew about their nature. The boys parents had been force feeding them quicksilver to maintain their human form but it had a backlash effect on the boys who had not learned how to control themselves. After several mysterious accidents Lainey helped the boys escape from their parents and find a new place to live where they could be themselves. She ended up leading them to Charlaine where they took up residents in one of the abandoned homes. They spent most of their time training themselves. Lainey is the pack leader of their small group.
