WORD ON THE BLOCK : Everyone knows Immacolata Pelagatti, whether they care to or not. The only child of Mariana Lucchese, a housewife, and Constantino Pelagatti, a shrewd businessman who managed to ascend to great wealth with the Luccheses by acquiring and re-establishing two popular nightclubs, she has maintained a sketchy sort of celebrity for her over-the-top party-hopping over the last five years. Having always been an ardent lover of glamour and socialising — and, conversely, hideously allergic to monotony — one can’t simply wag their finger at her parents’ lack of discipline, as easy to place blame on them as it seems. A modern-day Edie Sedgwick, or so she’d like to regard herself, Immacolata is known to be an amiable and bold girl; no shrinking violet here, no blushing youngster frightened of lime-light and flash-bulbs. Very outgoing, very charming – to some.

Hers is a large gaggle of so-so friends, fun and casual — artistic nobodies, trust-fund babies, grown children of other family members, old private-school chums, even a young B-list musician or actor here and there whose phone number she picked up in one of her father’s nightclubs — and in her liking of befriending such different variations of people, cellular phone always at hand, her title is not undeserved in the least. The socialite, indeed! Detractors may call her nothing but a materialistic brat, of course, or a capricious and irresponsible dim-wit — a living example for mothers as to what they want to avoid in their own daughters — but it’s wrong to judge. Others concede that she is a generous person, despite her self-indulgence, and a very tender daughter.

BITS AND PIECES.
ð         Immacolata is a smoker. A borderline alcoholic too, but she won’t admit to that so much.
ð         Terrible in relationships. Her inability to keep a boyfriend is a joke to her relatives. She usually has a new one every month or so and generally likes breaking up via text messages to save time; or she finds some other weird way that doesn't involve actually speaking face-to-face with the other person.
ð         Sometimes to serve this purpose, or if taken by a particularly vicious fit of boredom, Immacolata is known to up and leave town on ridiculously short notice for days at a time.
ð         She accepts her family’s position in the mafia as a matter of course. It’s unchangeable, after all; her mother is a Lucchese. There’s no alternative to being loyal to the Cosa Nostra, even if she’s not involved in any of their affairs. Imma considers it men’s business.
ð         Once a passionate ballet student; fracturing her knee when she was seventeen ruined her ambitions along that vein. She took to tennis after her recovery, but her interest in it didn’t last too long in comparison, despite having a streak of natural talent in the sport.
ð         Warmly affectionate by nature, although she usually knows when to turn it off for those who aren’t so touchy-feely; Immacolata is prone to sometimes sending out the ‘wrong signals’ when someone unfamiliar to her ways misinterprets what is supposed to be a platonic gesture. A distant uncle, Petrovi Pelagatti, has been avoiding her for years due to this tendency.
ð         While the epitome of impulsive, her behaviour is very easy to read in a turn-about way; generally, the more unhappy she is, the more busy she is. The less she is home; the more she is out and about and partying and having a good time. Some people sulk and mope and dwell on their issue, Immacolata generally does all she can to avoid that.
ð         Ah, of course, and “the tape”. Immacolata made the mistake of sleeping with her home-school tutor in her teens; an awkward event which he’d recorded. She pays him, now and again, a few thousand to keep his distance. She imagines she’ll get the tape back soon on her own; it’s not exactly the sort of story one shares with others.
ð         … And that’s not the only person who gives her a bit of trouble. (THE CANDYMAN) apparently leeches off Immacolata in very much the same way, but who knows?

RELATIONSHIPS : Their frequent absenteeism in her youth has resulted in some distance in that, when push comes to shove, Immacolata will generally do whatever the hell she wants to do, regardless of if they disagree or not — but still, she loves her parents fiercely and she is loved in return. She fusses and nags over her father’s hefty weight problems, and in return, he complains about her un-Catholic dating habits. Every Sunday, without fail, she lunches with her mother and grandmother and humours their taste for gossip.
PETS : One tiny but tempestuous maltipoo, Zita. The animal generally follows her everywhere, and in it's character, is quite difficult to miss.

BACKGROUND : Immacolata was born over a month premature. It was a terribly complicated birth, nurses and doctors all about the place; very dramatic business, the whole thing. Her mother would quip that Immacolata’s adoration for fast things had developed while she was still in the womb; that she was impatient even then, wanting to get out and experience the world as soon as possible. That’s what Immacolata’s childhood was, really — just one big rush, a direct continuation of her birth, with phases whipping passed her earlier than they ought to have.

Always a chatterbox, always an adorer of social gatherings of any kind — birthdays, christenings, Sunday lunches, Christmases, family brunches, weddings, funerals — she was a rather spoiled thing, though she much preferred the company of her cousins and friends to toys and knick-knacks. Some little girls would have become horribly conceited by decadent presents — but while Imma enjoyed the indulgence as any would, her whims were always extremely temporary. Two days later and the toy was just another ‘thing’ in her room, and there was something new that caught her attention. There was no reason to become a boastful child. Good for her, really, but not quite so much for her neglected gift-givers; her grim Papa, namely, who was unable to give more time-consuming shows of affection with more pressing matters to attend to.

She never had much interest in school, though she attended an exceptional pair of private ones. While not unintelligent, classrooms were dreary places for Immacolata, and her love for talking and laughing never impressed her teachers as it did her peers. She managed to keep a dual handle on the social and academic things until her puberty years, at least, where her grades took a very abrupt nosedive and her behaviour became more flamboyant; enough so to get her passed along to the headmaster weekly. Dropping out? It was her preference, but having the gull to say such a thing earned her a hearty slap. Instead, she was fixed into home-schooling at fifteen, finishing off the last two years under the guidance of a private tutor.

While always having been a social butterfly, she certainly prospered in that arena after graduating. Having a busy father — in an industry Immacolata was aware of, she wasn’t stupid — and a mother who liked to cling to him, often meant that Immacolata, while sheltered, had a little more freedom to do as she liked than many others. Then at eighteen, at the end of her high school career, her rather “loose” parents became even more-so. Chauffeurs and punishments were never excused, of course, but the metaphorical door was open and she took advantage of it bull-headedly. With no college-bound aspirations, access to money and drivers... well, Immacolata’s been on an upward spiral ever since.
