Born into one of the wealthiest families in the world, Draco was raised in the lap of luxury. The Malfoys were highly influential and he had even advantage in life -- the best schools, the best tutors, the best toys and books and everything else a boy needs, except for his father's attention. Lucius Malfoy was a busy man and he didn't have time for his son. Draco had his mother's attention, but somehow that wasn't enough.
He strived to be the best son possible. Draco did everything he could think of to please Lucius -- he'd draw him pictures that went ignored, and work hard to try and make his teachers and tutors praise his intelligence and dedication in their reports, but he wasn't sure his father ever looked at them. Gifts from his mother began to leave a bitter taste in Draco's mouth. His mother's love didn't feel sincere anymore, not when his father obviously didn't share her feelings.
When he was informed he was going to be sent to boarding school, Draco tried to see it as an opportunity to prove himself, but it was hard not to feel like he was being pushed further away. His mother saw him off at the station, and Draco began planning his ascent to the school's social and academic heights. He was going to be the best and then his father couldn't ignore him. He even managed to keep it up for a few years. When it became obvious it wasn't working, he began obsessing over his appearance, trying to look as much like his father as possible to catch his attention. He followed as closely in the man's footsteps as he possibly could.
Lucius took an interest in him in the summer of his fourteenth year, when exam results came out and Draco slipped behind a scholarship student. It didn't matter than he was still one of the top five students in the school, his father chewed him out for it and broke Draco's heart in the process. Nothing was ever going to be good enough for him. It didn't stop Draco from trying, but it did start him down the path of finding replacement father figures.
The first was one of his summer tutors. He was eleven years older than Draco and he was supposed to be helping improve his French. It didn't take much work on Draco's part to seduce him, although he had to lie about being a virgin to convince the other man to sleep with him. Draco basked in the attention, loved the way he could make his tutor look at him, and when the tutor ended things as the school year and the end of their time together drew closer, Draco threw a fit. Not because he was particularly hurt. It was just kind of insulting to be thought of as a summer fling and someone's dirty little secret.
At school, Draco decided on a replacement and began the process of seducing a professor. It was much more interesting than the schoolwork he was doing and his social life. It wasn't that much of a stretch to say he had trouble at home -- his father barely noticed him and his parents weren't exactly the happiest married couple, although they got on all right -- and this time he lied and said he was still a virgin and the idea of having an untouched student for a lover sent his chosen target over the edge. Draco had him for a couple of years before his professor decided it was too dangerous.
Draco had very little interest in people his own age, but he allowed himself to date a boy only a year ahead of him in school, if only because it was obvious Marcus was in love with him. Draco liked the feeling of being loved. He cultivated it in other people, flirted hard regardless of gender, although women were of even less interest to him than men. Marcus liked to hold him in the middle of the night and promise him the stars and the moon, entire galaxies if he wanted them. Draco was understandably upset when Marcus was caught snogging some girl later that year. It was worse than being dumped by the tutor or the professor. He'd done Marcus a favour by dating him at all. Marcus was supposed to adore him.
Draco got his revenge by seducing the girl. It was disgusting and he hated every minute of snogging her, but he'd stolen her from Marcus and got his own back and that was what really mattered.
Draco only really got involved with someone a year out of school. He was older and married with children, but Draco wanted him the minute he set eyes on him. It took Draco a couple of months to get him, but they were worth it. Besides, Draco didn't give up when he set his sights on something. Whatever else people wanted to say about him, they couldn't call him a quiter. The affair lasted well over a year and Draco thought he might actually have found the person for him. It didn't matter if the other man had a son about Draco's age. All that mattered was that the two of them were together. Draco was loyal and dedicated and loving and then suddenly he was alone because his boyfriend decided to try and save his marriage.
Draco fell into depression. He had been enrolled at Cambridge, but his studies didn't interest him anymore. He wanted his boyfriend back. He wanted to slip into hotels in the middle of the night and laugh and roll around in the sheets with him and be as quiet as possible as he kissed his lover's chest while he talked to his wife on the phone. Draco's father gave him a long speech about not applying himself and Draco's grade's slipped further as a result. Negative attention was still attention of a sort, even if he felt worse and worse every time he talked to his father and heard more about what was wrong with himself.
Draco's mother was the one who suggested he get help, and Draco resented her being the only one who noticed how he was feeling. His married ex had stopped taking his calls a long time ago, and seemed to have managed to convince his wife to ignore them too. Draco's father just grumbled that he was lazy and maybe stupid. Draco was just seeing his therapist once or twice a month until he made the mistake of getting drunk and showing up at his ex's place in the middle of the night, making a spectacle of himself. The truth unraveled after that.
Draco's father shipped him off to Sacred Springs as soon as possible. He didn't want to speak to Draco, didn't want to hear his side of the story, and especially didn't want anyone who mattered to find out he had a crazy, gay son with a thing for married men old enough to be his father. Draco began his stay at the hospital as a model patient, earning significant freedom after only a few weeks on the lowest security floor. Draco swallowed a bottle of pills as soon as the nurses on his floor trusted him enough to turn their backs long enough, and was promptly moved to floor two after having his stomach pumped.
