The Mafiusi Premise.

A lot has changed since the 1930’s— since the initial ascension of the Cosa Nostra’s power over the corrupted wonderland that is New York City. The Lucchese family were recognised as one of the dominating empires in organized crime— one of the original Five Families— and as one era melted into another, as one don stepped down to allow a younger to rise, and so on and so forth, it would have seemed that their progeny would have only solidified their kin’s places as the engines behind the best and brightest of the city’s illegal and legal industries. Feuds between the Five Families were routine, but due to their being led by a particularly wise man throughout the temperamental 1960’s, the Lucchese’s strategic move of keeping a low profile in the face of the city’s alluring limelight proved beneficial.

The international trade of armed weapons and narcotics during the 80’s and 90’s saw a gigantic boost in the Lucchese’s yearly revenue; the family was able to pull in an additional fifty million dollars every quarter, at first, with which they were immediately able to infuse their political standing and begin investing in the bubbling New York nightlife. The numbers only rose. Having been based in a particular hub of Brooklyn since the founding members of their family emigrated from Sicily, as time and resources became so greatly plentiful, they were finally able to expand their turf into Manhattan, and despite some bitter opposition from the Genovese, into New Jersey also.

In the earliest years of the 21st Century, the Families became aware of a new, foreign force from Brooklyn— it was a true error in judgement on all their parts that they did not act immediately; that they assumed the congregation of criminal groups among Brighton Beach was of no risk to the incredible success of their own houses. By the time feuds were instigated between the Russian groups and the Bonannos and Genovese, their numbers and method of business— coldly professional, neither weighed down by old customs or dependence on family— was overwhelming against their traditional foes. The Genovese were the first to move their assets into Detroit, to sell out their New York holdings and leave only a small company behind; after a greater struggle, the Bonnanos took what pieces still remained of their domain and travelled West Coast-ward, where it is assumed they are recovering their numbers with some added financial support by the Luccheses, with whom business was always amicable.

The Gambinos were the second-last to abandon the corrupt city that had been the financial playground of their forefathers for a near-century– but unlike their cousin-houses, it was due to their business holdings in Philadelphia showing more potential, but needing more attention also. At least, that was their excuse. Their extensive territories were shared between their smaller gangs who remained in the city and the Colombo Family, who they favoured over the Luccheses as the two remaining families. While the Russian-run Odessa Group never admitted to it, it was clear enough to both the Luccheses and the Colombos that their dons— each man beloved, each man renowned— were assassinated by associates of that common foe. The Colombos reacted with little pride, leaving for their Las Vegas strongholds. All Italian territories were passed to the Luccheses; all sub-groups who were left in the city affiliated themselves with the last-standing remnant of a bygone era.

And so the war begins.

Email all applications to mafiusimod@yahoo.com, we’ll speedily approve you or highlight a few things that may need altering in order to get your character in as soon as possible, and you’ll receive a scribbld.net invite to build your journal. If you’d rather host your application somewhere else and just provide a link, that’s fine too; email that to us instead or comment with it here. As for the application/survey itself, we don’t ask for a huge influx of information, but we do want to have a basic outline of their personality and current situation and be assured of each writer’s ability to post well and confidently develop their character. If you use this format or come up with your own, it’s fine, as long as the principal categories are touched on (history, personality, etc.) thoroughly, it’s accepted.

When you’re given access to your journal, you must either post your application there or write an update within the first week so other players know what your character’s about. Your journal will be used for only this community, as will your AIM, which must have a screen name that relates to your character’s name or position.

With the leader of the Gambino family having pulled their entire assets out of the city in response to the Russians overwhelming attacks toward their under-bosses, the Luccheses have found themselves to be the last remaining representative of the Cosa Nostra’s original Five Families in New York. While the blood of their murdered Don, Massimo Lucchese, may still be wet on the pavement; the family business continues riding on it’s lucrative wave carried through from the late 90’s, with investments— corrupt and otherwise— in various real estate and shipping companies, cafes and nightclubs, and particular areas of the stock-market. They also have a good stake in the drug and arms trafficking market to and from certain places in the Middle East; the distribution of which, among other things, the Russians’ presence jeopardizes. The old traditions of the Cosa Nostra, stapled in its male-dominated hierarchies and emphasis on solid familial bases, continues to govern the Luccheses in the face of what may become a very messy war indeed.

THE LUCCHESE HIERARCHY

The Boss –

(Male)

The respected patriarch and leader of the family, often referred to as the Don or the Godfather. He is the powerhouse behind every business transaction of any variation; taking care of his matters through his chain of command, never directly. His word is law, as they say, and it’s the responsibility of his underbosses, each appointed personally by him or the leader who came before him, to see his desires turned into fruition. After the murder of Massimo, this responsibility has been placed in the hand of his eldest son, known for his quick temper and passionate love for his family; the tradition of passing from father-to-son is very intact here.

The Underbosses –

(Male)

Each man having been carefully selected from the breadth of Lucchese mafioso, they are second in the Cosa Nostra’s chain of command, and men of obvious great respect and capability; people ‘in the know’, recognise their names immediately and either react with reverence or dread The Underbosses oversee the developments of each Capo, keeping a constant commentary over their handling of the missions they’re given, and act as superior middle-men between them and the Boss, relaying his instructions as they come. When there is great trouble, they are among the Boss’ most trusted council.

The Consigliere –

(Male)

The single-most important counsellor to the family. The Consigliere, as a general rule, is always equipped with a clean history with the law and a good profile in society which would naturally downplay his involvement in the Boss’s affairs. He’s among the family’s most faithful affiliates and is respected as such. A legitimate businessman-- most commonly, a lawyer-- who advises on the Lucchese’s valid business pursuits, as well as all matters dark and bloody, his expertise is particularly in assisting the family in creating and maintaining strong ties with political figureheads and important members of the justice system.

The Caporegime –

(Male)

When one has been ‘around the block’ for long enough, and have been clearly proven to be reliable and diligent men, they may be fortunate enough to be appointed as a Capo. It takes time and a great deal of effort; they have to impress the Underboss they’re appointed under, and what with the tendency of men being harder to impress the older they get, that’s usually a difficult feat. They’re the leaders of the numerous crews of "button-men" who physically carry out the Boss’ orders, whilst usually being in charge of their own, smaller families as well.

The Soldiers –

(Male + Female)

In the Lucchese’s way of sticking to tradition, they only accept Italians; in this way do they differ from the Russians, who open their arms to any nationality and sex. As the Lucchese’s ascension to ‘greatness’ was originally made with pure intentions-- for Sicilians to be able to help other Sicilians-- the Lucchese elders do their best to condition the younger generations into believing selectivity and familial elitism is among the family’s greatest assets. Every trooper is of Italian descent and usually has some distant blood connection to the Lucchese family. While the rare woman is accepted, Italian sexism and stubbornness makes it a difficult and unwelcome profession to most of the fairer sex; every soldier figures out early that they’re in competition with each other for kudos and bonuses, after all.

While characters that differ from the premades are actually accepted, we ask that self-made titles and concepts aren’t overly dramatic— no THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN/MAN ALIVE, please!— and mesh well with the reality of the game. While we have set it up so that there are at least three pre-existing ties between characters, they are set up as RUMOURS, so it's up to individual players as to how/whether they're explored, or if they're nothing but false gossip. The Lucchese’s head family is not up for any additions that haven’t been mentioned at this point in time, but there are plenty of spots in the extended family to fill that void.

001. This isn’t so much as a rule as it is a plea: be kind and respectful to each other. Clique issues and cattiness won’t be tolerated. We want friendly and mature writers here.

002. We advise that players be 16+, due to the adult situations that will be difficult for a character to avoid. This is, after all, a game about various kinds of criminals.

003. No godmodding; if you want to do something to a person’s character, ask first. Yet, at the same time, please be smart and fair if something occurring is of a violent nature— for example, if your character is, say, fist-fighting against another character who’s twice their size and fit as a bull, they’ll probably get knocked a few times. The mods can be brought in to oversee anything intense to be sure it’s being handled fairly.

004.   IC=/=OOC, please do not confuse the two. Two characters you play will not be privy to the same information, the players and their characters are two separate entities; things like OOC peer-pressure, overt OOC complaining about the IC reactions of other characters, etc., will not be tolerated. We want as light an environment here as possible, fun is the real aim of the game.

005.   No netspeak here, babes. Capital letters, proper use of both spelling and grammar are both encouraged and enforced. We’re not talking about random mis-spellings and little typos now and then, those are minor accidents that everyone makes; but if your post or application is borderline unintelligible? Not cool. Spell-check was created for a reason, and we expect everyone to love it and embrace it like we do!

006.    Just as bisexuality and homosexuality is one of those many things alive in the reality we live in, it exists in the reality of this game also; our only ruling here is that if it’s done, it’s done in a realistic and tasteful manner, with things like their character’s professions and societies taken into account. It's what we expect from our heterosexual pairs as well, mind; we don't want tackiness or ridiculousness on either level, and a character or player's aim here should never be to find a boy/girlfriend.

007.   Major plot points must be approved by a mod first, just so we know things won’t be getting out of hand; we don’t want anything getting gratuitous or tacky. These plot points may concern rape/pregnancies/marriages/the murder of PCs (which is allowed with expressed OOC permission from involved character’s player to the mods), etc.

008.   Please choose a username, without underscores, that is somehow a reference to your character. It’s much better than having a random word with no relevance at all.

009.   TIME: Although the game is set in early 2007, as we realise there may be players who wish to explore their pre-set relationships between their characters, we do allow for back-scenes. In some cases it's better and easier to have a one-off thread with someone, with both your characters having met for the first time in 1995, than to just assume dynamics after a short OOC discussion. For the sake of character relationships, we allow this; but the most of the threads will take place in the IC present.
          As for the present; the game will run in real time. We understand this can sometimes turn things into a pickle when it comes to certain storylines — a kidnapping, a pregnancy, etc. — which would realistically take over a very long amount of time, but it makes for ease in calculating. On extremely special occasions, for those aforementioned kinds of plots that the mods will regard case-by-case, we may allow with a little “hazing”. Which is? You'd keep things vague, and we’ll do the same. That doesn’t mean we’ll let someone pop out a kid in one month, or let anyone run around saying Billy’s been missing for a year, but things might occur in a more speedy fashion for sake of plot development.

001.   Detailed writers and characters are our diamonds in the ruff. When you apply to Mafiusi, please do so with the intention of giving your character(s), their personalities and pursuits the attention they deserve. Sporadically, the mods will do activity checks to make sure people are still kicking.

002.   One person is allowed no more than two characters, and you are asked to be very selective in balancing their professions and statuses. Please don’t ask to be your first character’s sibling or cousin, for instance; try not to pick characters that rely on each other’s existence at all.

003.   No one-liners. Ever. That’s just being polite.

001.   RP threads and logs will be posted publicly in the IC community, casalingo, and communications via more technological means (i.e. phone-calls, emails, letters) posted on parlare, in the same manner. As a note, we are open-minded and welcoming in regards to characters engaging in IC relationships of an either emotional and/or physical nature that’s rational to them; just be mindful of the rating section of the obligatory posting format, in case anything is not work safe.

004. Nice userinfos > Obnoxious userinfos.

005. Mods have the right to turn down PB choices. If they're not an over-exposed celebrity (ala Brad Pitt, Britney Spears, etc.) or obnoxiously overused as a PB, you should be right as rain. A little creativity can go a long way.

001. Journals are treated as online blogs, such as your character's livejournal or myspace, where a character is able to update about their thoughts about their day if they wish. Any character that would have access to them is able to place their comments on entries, of course, as long as it's not set as a private entry in the typical [Private to <Blabla>] format. Strike-outs are not able to be read.
