Back from summer camp... and here's Leela

Our hacker conference / geeky summer camp was a whole lot of fun. Hard to believe it's over.
I'll be writing more about it but first I want to tell you about a fun project I did: a Leela costume.

Leela is a character from the cartoon Futurama, drawn by the same guy as the Simpsons. She looks like this:

When she smiles, which is a rare occurrence, her eye is an oval shape.

Nice challenge, isn't it? I started off buying a cheap party wig to make the hairpieces, and a mask and styrofoam ball for the eye.

Click makes bigger.

Of course, the first attempts look a bit silly; but you can see how the white fabric I covered the mask with helps to hide my eyes. The nose is a bit of a problem, but there's not much we can do about it.
The pupil is too big but I don't want to make it smaller, as it distracts the view from my eyes. I made lashes from chenille.

The ponytail was fun to make. The camera makes it look bluer than it is. It's a bit heavy, so the hairclip it's attached to tends to pull on my hair; I ended up attaching a bent plastic strip, that supports it.

This is more like it! My own hair is dyed purple and I'm wearing the white tank top and black slacks. The bracelet is made from an old camping mat and lots of duct tape, and contains a speaking clock from DealExtreme and a small LED flashlight. Very useful, as I could not see too well!
Notice the geeky LED buckle... also from DX. Not authentic but SO much fun.

This is my favourite pic of the costume. See the space gun? It came from a toy store, but Stoneshop enhanced it for me, adding lots of colourful flashing LEDs.
I'm wearing my own biking boots.

This picture shows the colours of the fake hair (and my own) more accurately.

All in all, I had a lot of fun making this... and wearing it!
