Oliver Jonas Queen is the son of Robert and Patricia Queen,. Patricia, or "Patty" was a career politician who was also the Mayor of Star City as well as a United States Senator for the State of California, while Robert was a small-business owner. Ollie's parents were inaccessible to him as a young boy, with his mother always in Washington and his father usually busy with work. The Queen marriage was tumultuous, but Patty was being eyed as a serious candidate for the presidency when it was revealed his father was having an affair with his nanny, creating a son.
Patricia's campaign was bolstered by her husband's infidelity and Oliver came to live with her, but her relationship with her son deteriorated as she refused couldn't bring herself to be around her son and didn't trust anyone else to watch him, leaving Ollie to grow up alone. To cope with the stress, Patricia began drinking and got involved with a subversive group called the False Face Society. Her meteoric rise to stardom ended abruptly when she and six other senators were assassinated by unknown assailants.
Robert brought Ollie home to Star City, but by now, he'd formed a family with the nanny, Maura, and her son Roy. The boys fought all the time to the consternation of the parents. After a particularly horrible fight with his father when he was thirteen, Oliver accused Robert of being responsible for Patty's death and left home. He returned several hours later to find his father and step-mother dead, and his brother missing.
Oliver did what he could to expose the truth, but no one would listen to him, except for his mother's friend, General Slade Wilson. Slade introduced him to the charismatic Ra's al Ghul, who informed Oliver that his mother was marked for death by a secret group called the Order of Saint Dumas, and that they also kidnapped his brother. Oliver despaired of ever being able to avenge his parents, at which point Ra's agreed to train him.
Oliver spent years with the League, becoming one of their best assassins and the leader of the Men of Death.
