Kids around the world celebrate the worlds book day. Authors and editors presenting readings at many different locations of their publications. World Book Day aims to be 'biggest book show on earth'
Thursday's event expects to reach more than half a million with star-studded event beamed to children around the globe
Over half a million children from all over the world will gather to watch authors including Francesca Simon, Anthony Horowitz, Lauren Child and Tony Robinson celebrate the joy of reading on Thursday's World Book Day.
Dubbed the "Biggest Book Show on Earth", the hour-long event will take place in Queen Elizabeth Hall in London at 11am on 7 March, and will be broadcast live to cinemas around the UK, as well as shown live online. Children's author and television presenter Robinson will host the event, Horrid Henry creator Simon will show how to bring characters to life, and Alfie author Shirley Hughes will explain the secrets of illustration.
"The target this year is for three quarters of a million children," said Robinson. "I'm just about to go and sit in a quiet place and start to think about what I'm going to say. It's the largest audience I've ever played to."
"I'll be talking about how to capture your ideas and plan your writing," added Tom Gates author Liz Pichon, who will also be appearing on stage, along with Charlie & Lola creator Child and Cathy Cassidy. Last year half a million children from more than 75 countries watched the show, and organisers said that over 550,000 have already registered this year, with many thousands more expected to sign up by Thursday.
As well as events in schools, libraries and bookshops around the country – many of which will see children dressing up as their favourite literary characters – World Book Day will also be marked by the release of eight new books, which cost £1 or can be exchanged for the £1 World Book Day book token given to each child by their school. The books include Hughes's Alfie's Shop, Simon's Horrid Henry's Guide to Perfect Parents, Horowitz's The Diamond Brothers in… Two of Diamonds and Pichon's Tom Gates: Best Book Day Ever! (So Far).

Taking the child’s love of the simple maze and using it to teach both co-operation and co-ordination
Everyone loves a maze – perhaps because mazes are infinitely variable and so suitable for all ages.
But perhaps mostly we love mazes because maze solving has a skill all of its own.
That’s a good start of course, but imagine also a maze in which the child not only has to find the way through a simple maze, but must also learn to balance at the same time!
The challenge is immense, but the solution is possible for older nursery children, and achieving the solution will help their physical co-ordination to develop, as well strengthening the cognitive skills involved in solving the maze and co-operation when two or more children are involved.
Such an impact comes with the Balancing Maze which can be used across different difficulty levels, and its companion the Twin Balancing Board.
At the simplest level the child holds the Balancing Maze and gently turns it one way and the next to guide the ball through the maze – thus developing arm co-ordination and strength.
At the next stage two children work together with the board, co-operating to get the ball to move in the desire direction.
Next we return to single use again with the child standing on the board with one foot on either side. Then eventually it is two children holding hands and co-ordinating their balance.
The Twin Balancing Board works in a similar way but has a higher weight maximum (taking 100kg as opposed to a maximum of 80kg for the Balancing Maze).
Additionally the Twin Balancing Board comes with three different maze patterns and allows up to six children to hold it while manipulating up to three different balls.
