The rest of the Ireland trip, shorthanded [Apr. 22nd, 2009|05:14 pm]
[A Bit of the Old Ludwig Van |Misery Signals - Ebb and Flow]

Okay. So I left off on Tuesday....

Wednesday:

Andrew and Conor went back to class Wednesday, since they had off Monday and Tuesday for Patty's Day. Matt and I decided to head into the city and go sightseeing. We hopped on a tour bus, and decided we would hit up the Guinness Brewery. Holy shit. It was like heaven. 7 floors of everything imaginable. It started with ingredients, then went to the brewing process, then we went through a tasting lab, where we got to try a free like, half pint of Guinness right as it came out. Incredible. Then they had floors dedicated to advertising and around the world kinda stuff. The top floor was a circular bar, looking out over the entire city. Such an amazing view. We got a free pint, and the bartender drew shamrocks in the foam. We headed back to the school, hung out with Andrew and Conor, drank a bit, and watched Waking Ned Devine. Really good movie.

Thursday:

We pretty much did the same thing as Wednesday. Matt and I decided to go on a tour of Kilmainham Gaol, the famous Irish prison, which closed in 19...16 I believe. It was really interesting. It was a guided tour, unlike Guinness, so we got a really cool history lesson as we went along. We started in the original area of the jail, then moved to the newer wing, which has been in movies and music videos and stuff. Then we went outside, and ended at the area where they executed prisoners. It was really sombering. That night, we ordered some taco fries from Apache, the Dominos-ish pizzeria, and watched In The Name of the Father, one of the movies that was filmed in Kilmainham. Awesome awesome awesome movie.

Friday: My last day =(. The four of us went around the city yet again, and went to the Jameson Distillery. It was a pretty short tour, not as cool as the Guinness brewery. Still interesting though. I volunteered for a taste test at the end of the tour. They set out three shots of Whiskey, one Jameson, one Jack Daniels, and one Johnny Walker, and we had to try each and pick which was best. Obviously, Jameson was. Then we signed the guestbook with fake names and comments.

Andrew: Daniel Plainview: "I drink your whiskey. I DRINK IT UP!"
Conor: Jack Nicholson: "Beer is still the best drink in the world"
Me: Patrick Bateman: "The whiskey at Dorsia is shit compared to this place"
Matt: Jimmy (I'll explain afterwards): "OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE! I'm goin' down to Grangers and have myself a pint!"

Okay. So. Jimmy. Jimmy is this guy in his 60s who works at the school we were staying at, basically a janitor/maintenance guy. He definitely drank alot, and probably did alot of drugs back in the day. He always hung out with us when we were at the school, drank with us, etc. and told us hilarious stories. And the quote above was what he would always say when something went wrong, or when he got pissed off. He was hilarious.

So after we got back from the Jameson Distillery, we hung out for a couple of hours, then headed back into the city for a party that Andrew's friend PJ was throwing. She was a student he knew from NYU, and she had a penthouse apartment in downtown Dublin. It was incredible. The party was PACKED. We all got drunk, had an awesome time. Andrew and Conor got pissed because the girls they were trying to get with had boyfriends, so they left. They couldn't unlock the huge gate at the front of the apartment building, so they had to climb it, and... I dunno where they went haha. They were at the school by the time Andrew and I got back at like, 4 in the morning. I passed out right away. The next morning, Andrew woke me up, and we all went and had breakfast, and hung out for a couple of hours. I packed my bags, and Andrew called a cab for me. We said our goodbyes, and I went to the airport. After like, an hour in line, and then a 4 hour wait to get on the plane, and another like, 8 hours on the flight, which had some incredible scenery, I was home. My mom and sister picked me up from the airport, and I basically went home and crashed, since I was still on Ireland time. I didn't have to work the next day, either, so I slept like woah.

So yeah. That's it. My trip. Haha it was way too much fun. I can't wait to go back in 2010, when Andrew, Conor, and I go backpacking. Should be incredible.
