Abernathy's family doesn't speak on her often; Violet's death was sudden and unexpected and it ripped a very large hole in their family. It's still too close to the surface.
	Veruca Kidd Aunt Veruca is Abernathy's aunt and benefactress. She was Violet's sister and took it upon herself to push for the girls to have an interest in wizarding after her sister died. Any notable differences from the pb? He stands at 5'9". He wears black rimmed reading glasses. Something of a fashionista, but he's not snooty about it. He dresses very well, sometimes in clothes too expensive for the allowance his parents give him.

A bit of a momma's boy. He has a hard time relating to his dad now that he's older. He adores his little sister, but things changed when he decided to come to Dresden. She abjectly refuses to write to him and won't talk to him when he's home on breaks. His parents didn't want him going to school so far away either, but they figured he was old enough to decide what he wanted for himself.
Familiar: None.
Any other relations we should know about: Most of his family lives in Jamaica, except for an older cousin who moved to London. He spends more time with his mother's family than his father's.

He dated a girl at the Queens School, but they broke up when he decided to study at Dresden. It wasn't entirely apparent to her at the time that he was gay and he wasn't ready to admit it to himself.

Strengths: He has amazing self-discipline.

Detailed personality: Arnaud was surrounded by people who were relatively larger than life. In response he developed a quieter, thoughtful demeanor. He can turn on the louder aspects of his personality when among his family to garner attention, but he doesn't need to be the center of attention and rarely does.

He fears the darker impulses his upbringing introduced him to and for the most part avoids temptation. For others he is a quiet, supportive force. For himself is a steadfast rock, denying any impulse that could awake the demons from his childhood training in Obeah.

Arnaud has a high degree of self-control, but his fear nibbles away at the defenses he has built for his mind. He sees the school counselor once a month for a session, but he rarely even scrapes the surface of what he fears. He's had two panic attacks since his arrival at Dresden; he wants to reach out for help, but again he fears it is a sign of personal weakness if he does.

Personal History: Both of his parents were wizards, but each chose unique paths for their lives outside the expected world of wizardry. The Powells were a well to do family and when their son, Nathan was chosen to be a commissioned officer he ended his wizarding education early to pursue a military career. The Clarks were practically a dynasty in the priesthood of Obeah. They practiced in secret, though anyone in the know could point you directly to their doorstep for help in reversing fortunes. Queisha was home-trained in her arts.

Nathan met Queisha on furlough and the two had a whirlwind romance. Arnaud was the result of many personal hardships on the part of his parents. His mother suffered several miscarriages before Arnaud's birth (and at least one more before the birth of his sister).

He had a mostly happy childhood at home, though there was always the worry that his father would get injured as part of his service. Plus his mother's peculiar career always set him ill at ease. He had a spark of talent for it; his mother taught him some of her arts at home, though his education was incomplete. He was never willing to give himself over completely, always remained a little closed off. Queisha also taught him how to cut and style hair, which was another front for her business as an Obeah priestess.

Arnaud was accepted to The Queens School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Jamaica and began his education there. He was a good student, though his introduction to marijuana at the age of 13 hindered his studies for a semester. His mother soon fixed that problem and Arnaud only smokes on the weekend now.

In his sophomore year he decided to study abroad and began researching schools. Many schools had flash and grand reputations, but Dresden's understated quality appealed to him and he undertook the application process to gain entrance. Half-way through his junior year, Arnaud decided that he liked the school so much he wanted to stay on another year and is making arrangements to do so.

Detailed personality: Desires perfection above all else. She can be a bit prissy. She is extremely involved in school and sees each accomplishment as another trophy to place on her mantle of success. She's smart and very hardworking.

She's an elegant girl, but a little uptight. She's very conscious about her public image. After the scandal of her parent's divorce she tries very hard not to bring any further shame to her family.

Having grown up in the city of Halifax in Canada, Veronica sometimes struggles with American culture/behaviors (though she's been in the states for several years). She's very polite and tolerates rude behavior, but she tries very hard not to spend time with people who act that way.

Not really shy, but not terribly confident, she doesn't go out of her way to make new friends. She doesn't always recognize when others are using her for their own ends (and she always beats herself up for it after the fact).

Personal History: Born to Tiffany and Andrew Cantrell. Her father was a famous quidditch player, her mother a gifted witch with the Canadian Department of Wizardry.

Her early life in Halifax was idyllic, but before long Veronica and Sid couldn't deny that their parents relationship was strained. Andrew had cheated on Tiffany; she cheated in retaliation. He started spending more time at work and Tiffany started drinking to deal with his temper when he came home. Before long the tabloids got a hold of the story. Tiffany was fired from her job and Andrew's public image slowly destroyed.

One evening escalated in violence that the children listened in on from upstairs. Tiffany packed up the kids the next morning and moved back home to her mother in the States. After a rather bitter custody battle, Tiffany ended up with primary custody of both children and kept in the US. With the divorce settlement she managed to get them a decent house in Beekmantown, but life was never quite as good as it had been in Canada. Veronica and Sid spent summers with their father and the school year with their mother, though neither child really liked American schooling and couldn't wait to get their letters for magic school.

At age 11 Veronica received a letter to attend a Canadian magic school, but her mother decided to send Veronica to Dresden instead (as she had decided for Sid two years earlier).

Veronica loved school and jumped into it. It was scheduled, ordered; she always knew what to expect. She found that she was very good at learning.

She has recently discovered a talent for divination. Her mother told her she sometimes fades out, says strange things and comes back to them, but these episodes are very rare. She doesn't remember what she says during these episodes. At least two of her prophecies have come to fruition.

Any notable differences from the pb? 5'6", thin frame. Her hair is cut in a short bob and she occasionally dyes it in streaks and chunks with Manic Panic. She lives for jeans (and as soon as the school day is done she is OUT of the gray pants and tie). Typically she's in a tank top or tee and some sort of flannel shirt over it. She's in love with converse sneakers and writes little poems on the soles (which she's learned how to spell so that they aren't washed or scuffed away). She has an almost ridiculous collection of converse sneakers in every color imaginable. She's very low maintenance. Most days she won't even bother to dry her hair or even run a brush through it. Immediate Family Parents Billy and Violet (formerly Kidd). Violet died when AB was seven. Abby has a very close relationship with her dad as a result. An older brother Timothy and an identical twin sister Bernadine. Bill took to calling the girls AB (even though he can tell them apart). The nickname stuck and people who can't tell the difference between them seem to like that they have a legitimate way to talk to them without knowing exactly which twin it is. Familiar: None. She hasn't found one particularly suited to her, though she has an affinity toward most animals and is very good with them.
Any other relations we should know about: Abernathy has muggle and squib family all over the Northeast and some wizarding family in the South. Her family up North tend to live out in the middle of nowhere; they're hardy, woodsy sort of people who like their privacy. The wizarding parts of her family tend to migrate South. It's very hit and miss along AB's family tree as to who will end up a wizard and who will be a muggle. Abby has something of a benefactress in her Aunt Veruca Kidd.

She has a tenuous friendship with former archnemesis Adelaide Legaux. Her best friend is Cinnamyn Thompson.

She briefly dated Hawthorne Nikitin in the fall. She wouldn't recommend dating any of the Nikitin boys to her friends.

Personality
Likes: Anything at all to do with the outdoors (especially fishing), flannel (but especially plaid flannel shirts), swimming, wizardry in general (but not the culture that comes with it), all sorts of muggle things that wizards seem to take for granted or frown upon (like electricity), flying, the Yankees, Seattle Grunge music (esp. STP and Pearl Jam), Queens of the Stone Age.
Dislikes: Wizards robes, snobs, hypocrites, most students in the Clemons House, logic fails, religion, politicians (she feels redundant saying so since she's already listed hypocrites, but it's absolutely true), people who take themselves too seriously. Abernathy mostly dislikes specific categories of behaviors that people fall into.
Quirks: -Will run out into the middle of thunderstorms to frolic in the rain.

Strengths: Strong willed (sometimes a weakness if she's strong willed about the wrong thing), honest, hard-working, fearless in the woods, self-reliant.
Weaknesses: Judgmental, she has to see it to believe it, mischievous, would rather solve a fight with fists than with words, extreme grudge holder.

Detailed personality: Abernathy is a bit mischievous and sometimes finds herself getting into trouble as a result. She can fend for herself and is stronger than she looks (she prefers to be called scrappy). She can be "rough and tumble" and doesn't mind the bruises when she falls out of trees or gets into a fight.

She's very open minded in her personal philosophy; she likes to learn new things. She's usually practical in her approach to new (and old) situations. She's disgustingly determined; if her mind gets set on a course of action it's hell or high water that she's following the course. She doesn't like to be proven wrong, but she'll suck it up when she is.

She has a pretty strong personality. Abernathy is who she is and as far as she's concerned you can take it or leave it. She can get a bit judgmental, especially of people who wear their causes on their sleeves (for example she despises people who are into organized religion; she once openly mocked a bunch of students for having ash on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday). She's largely unapologetic about it.

When her opinions don't get in the way she's laid back, low maintenance, and easy going. She is very hard to anger, but she's very good at holding grudges. Once you've crossed her badly enough there is no way you're getting back into her good graces.

She's very independent and self-reliant. She's quite handy with tools and fixing things; she spends a lot of her vacations in the garage behind her house fixing old cars. She's aces at outdoors activities, especially the hobbies she grew up with. She'd rather spend her weekends fishing than stuck on campus (and has unsuccessfully tried to start a hunting/fishing club at school on more than one occassion). Despite her love of solitary, quiet pursuits Abernathy is a very friendly and outgoing person.

Personal History: Abernathy grew up mostly in the woods. Getting to her house is difficult enough in the summer, it's almost impossible in the winter (but Abby kind of likes it that way). Abby learned how to fish and hunt early on; she knows how to prepare caught game for eating and other uses. She's excellent at tracking in the woods. She loves to be outdoors and spent most of her summers in tents along the Hudson River.

She went to the local elementary school because her parents weren't entirely sure she'd grow up to be a witch. No one in the Ford family is ever certain until they get the letter, even if they exhibit some ability early on. Her older brother Timothy never got the letter and so he continued on with his muggle schooling. This education didn't prove entirely useless, though Abernathy was prone to dreaming about what the wizarding world might be like.

At the age of seven AB's mom died. It was sudden, unexpected and a horrible loss. Abby grew a lot closer to her dad and her siblings, even though they were a fairly tight-knit group before. They struggled on for a time, since Violet's contribution to their finances was significant. The Ford's learned to get by on less (and with the help they could get from their relations in the area).

Abernathy and Bernadine spent one summer with their wizarding relations at the age of 9. This trip was against Bill's better judgment and it was solely funded by Aunt Veruca (who insisted that the girls get to know the "other" side of the family). This vacation solidified Abernathy's desire to be a witch. She listened and learned as much as she could, even during the course of all the culture shock (Louisiana was not in any way shape or form like her beloved North Country). Abby's heart became set on wizarding.

It wasn't a huge surprise that Abernathy got the letter (she got two in fact, one from Blue Ridge (since several of her relations are alumni) and one from Dresden). The big surprise was that her identical twin, Bernadine didn't receive a letter. This was a hard blow for Abby, though Bernadine didn't struggle with it as much. Abby was never bothered by preferential differences between her and her sister, but this was a significant difference. This would put them in different strata as far as the family was concerned; Abernathy would be expected to migrate south. Most importantly for Abby, she struggled with the idea of being separated from her twin.

Bill didn't want to encourage or discourage her either way. He had raised his children to be independent thinkers so that even at the age of eleven they could make up their own minds. It took Abernathy a good week of agonizing before she could even speak about it with Bernadine. She hadn't officially made up her mind until the end of the summer; her bags were packed but she was inches away from throwing her dreams out the window. By the time her dorm room was unpacked Abby still wasn't sure if she'd made the right decision, but she started at the Lower School at Blue Ridge with funding and hefty encouragement from Aunt Veruca.

Abernathy found herself to be a rather gifted witch, though she didn't at all fit in with the wizarding culture (or the culture in the South). More often than not she'd spend her free time climbing trees or playing muggle sports; she wanted to fit in but she couldn't give up on all the things she loved.

Shortly after she left her letters from home started to get strained. Her father was struggling to say something and he couldn't write it down. It wasn't until Abernathy returned home after the first trimester that she began to figure out what was wrong. Bernadine had started to act strangely in her sisters absence and every muggle doctor her father had taken her to believed that the girl was suffering the early stages of schizophrenia.

Abernathy was devastated by this news and almost didn't return to school. It took some coaxing, but she returned to school and started researching the disorder in her spare time. Over the spring break it occurred to Abernathy that her sister might have second sight and simply didn't know how to process it because she didn't have any other magical gifts. She pestered every person she could, but being only 11 she wasn't taken very seriously. She'd been fighting to have someone visit with Abernathy, or get her admitted into the school on a limited basis (just to take classes related to divination systems), but she didn't have any success.

Disheartened by her treatment by the adults at school, her continuing struggles to fit in, and her increasing homesickness, Abernathy chose to leave the school at the end of her first year. She wanted to quit altogether, but her father knew that she was gifted and needed to explore this avenue more fully. After some negotiation, Abernathy was allowed to start her second year at Dresden Academy.

It was a much better fit for Abernathy and she was so close to home that she could visit on the weekends. This worked better for both sisters. Bernadine asked her sister not to ask Dresden to admit her; she was happy enough at muggle school and to her it wasn't worth the effort. Abby relented and plunged into her studies.

It didn't take long for her mischievous nature to kick in. While at school AB had a tendency to skip classes when the whim took her. She dressed out of code every Halloween. She got into fights at the slightest provocation from Adelaide Legaux and anyone else on her shit list. She was in detention so often that she claimed to have a desk with her name on it. She was actually pretty good in her classes (when she bothered to go, and excepting Latin of course), which is probably part of the reason she hasn't been expelled yet.

He likes to wear plain tees under button down shirts. He spends most of the summer in a ribbed white tank and Hawaiian shirt. He refuses to buy pre-distressed jeans; it doesn't take him long to get good looking wear on the ones he gets for himself; he uses his allowance to buy custom fitted jeans from a tailor. He has one pair of good black shoes that he only wears for band concerts, otherwise he's wearing his scuffed up shit-kickers.

Luka got a tattoo on his sixteenth birthday at Hawthorne's insistence and his father's reluctant permission (taking them to a parlor in NYC). Detailed personality: He inherited his father's laziness and foul mouth, but his mother's good natured attitude. Luka is tremendously easy-going. He gets along with most people and is very sociable. Something of a homebody; Luka prefers to stay in and hang out than go someplace else.

When he does apply himself Luka succeeds, but the trick is getting him to apply himself. When he's focused on a task he devotes his entire attention to it and sees it through, rare though it is. When he makes up his mind about something (or someone) he doesn't often change it.

He's relatively smart, though again it's a problem of not applying himself. He's made his teachers nervous by opting to take three advanced classes in his sixth year.

Luka is kind of a monster, even when he's trying to be good (make that: especially when he's trying to be good). He can't seem to help it. He's truly earned the nickname Hurricane Luka. This effect seems to get worse when Thorny is around.

Personal History: Luka decided early on that he was going to be the one thing that didn't quite belong.

Early on it was clear that he was going to be daddy's boy. He was into everything but he had that charming little dimple and those baby blue eyes to get him out of trouble.

One summer at his uncle's house Luka fed skelegro to one of the munchkin cats, thinking that the cat's legs were too short and it just needed a little help. His uncle would have sent Luka home, but the little boy broke out his big, sad, blue eyes and pouted his way into staying on the condition that he would leave the cats alone.

When it came time to pick a school Luka decided he preferred one closer to home, even though both of his parents were alumni of other schools (his father attended Pacific Coast, his mother L'Ecole Royal). He also figured he could forge his own path and not rely on their reputations. He chose a school in the Northeast: Dresden Academy.

Luka took up smoking as a social habit more than anything else. It affords him hang out time with Manney and managed to get him other friends at school. He almost never has a lighter on hand.

He doesn't have any solid plans for after school. He has a strong interest in magical crafting, but he's not sure how he could establish himself or who he would apprentice with.

Detailed personality: Thorny is usually agreeable and fun loving, but very wild. It's hard to control him unless he's focused on a project. It's possible that he has undiagnosed ADHD.

He's an instigator. He enjoys conflict, particularly when it's not focused on him but people around him. He will loudly mention past slights or sore spots between people in the room. He uses this tactic A LOT with his cousin Elena.

He's adventurous and game for just about any stupid stunt.

A little bit daft. He tends to overlook little details (and much bigger ones depending on the time of day, his mood, his attention span).

Personal History: Hawthorne didn't start out with a very conventional childhood. Born the lovechild of Regina and Misha, on again off again s.o.'s who live one floor apart in the same building. Thorny, as he came to be affectionately known, got to live in two different apartments with two different bedrooms and parents who loved each other but would never commit more than that.

Misha wasn't sure if Thorn would be a wizard, so they tried public school for awhile, but by the age of eight the green mohawk wearing punk rocker wasn't fitting in very well and the school situation wasn't going to work out. Regina agreed to homeschool him until he received his acceptance letter to wizarding school.

He is best friends with his cousin Luka who is one year younger. They usually spend their summers terrorizing whichever poor aunt/uncle/parent ended up with them.

The adults tried to prevent the boys from going to the same school, but Thorn won the argument. Dresden was the closest school and had a good reputation for dealing with troubling kids in a fair way. Mind you, Thorn and Luka have earned their fair share of detentions together.
