Shattering: [15 Mar 2010|06:25pm]
Melinda sighs as she glances at her phone. Mum again. She silences the ringer as she turns to her mates.

"I'll call her back later," she smirks. "I just didn't hear it ring."

Her friends snicker. "Melinda, you're so rotten," one says.

"What do you think she wants?" another asks.

Melinda shrugs. "Probably wants me to come home early," she sighs. "What I don't hear can't hurt me." She rolls her eyes again. "She probably wants to bug me about college again, too." She takes a sip of her drink. "I swear, she doesn't want to give me any time to consider what I want to do since graduating. She wants to know what I'm doing in the fall."

"Tell me about it," a friend tells her. "My mum isn't happy at all that I don't want to go to college. Just tell her!"

"I don't know," Melinda shrugs. "School's not out of the question. I just... want some time to think, you know?"

Her friends nod sympathetically, and Melinda takes another sip of her drink before her friends turn their attention to another topic.

She doesn't notice the man watching them carefully in the corner of the bar. She doesn't notice him follow her out of the bar.

Eventually, Melinda decides it's time to head home. She walks along the road alongside her best friend Kate.

"He liked you," Kate smiles, leaning up against her. "He was cute, too."

"Maybe," Melinda replies, remembering the cute young man that had purchased her last drink. "But he..." Her thought is interrupted by her phone ringing again. She shakes her head. It's 1 AM, and her mom is certain to be calling again, wondering where she is. With a sigh, she moves to answer the phone, figuring that she may as well let her mom know she's on her way home.

As she reaches for her phone, there's a flash of light, and Kate just... disintegrates before her eyes. She stares, uncomprehending, as the man who had been following her unseen stepped out in front of her, his hands still steaming from where it launched the lethal energy blast.

"Melinda," the man says, "come along. I have use for you."

As his features melt into a pale white face with a red diamond shape upon his forehead, Melinda feels her will start to fade away, and her phone's ringing seems more and more distant...
