EMMELINE • emmeline is the sister that frank never had, and frank's deep love, devotion, and desire to protect her runs within his very circuiting. i think that since they were always there for each other, in his case all the utterly dramatic and life-threatening events in his life, frank thought that he would always be there for her, life or death because when it came down to it, he truly saw her as his only family. their relationship was also our first big valesco one, and i don't think what they were can ever be captured again, even by us!
JAMES • james is his platonic soul mate. or, if they lived in alternate world, then they would be the two in the entire universe to have mirrored lives. obviously with everything they went through in france, these two go beyond a spoken understanding of each other. Their lives will be forever fated with each other (wonderfully crafted by JK herself), and when i think about the union that is potter + longbottom, it makes me think that yes, friendships can last more than one lifetime, WORDS OF WISE FROM AVATAR. they were friends, their children are friends, and their children's children will be friends, which is only a testament to how deep their relationship runs.

ALICE • alice is the love of frank's life. for him it was love at first sight, he knew he was going to do whatever he could to get this girl to marry him, even if that actually took a while for him to achieve. i think what makes fralice work is that they view and hold each other in an equal and respected way, and know that there are things that even they, respectfully, should leave unaddressed until the right moment. frank is an entirely difficult kind of person, which alice is not-- she in fact is incredibly sweet and caring, but i think their differences are what made them work so well. nothing could ever truly get between them because there was never... it was never in the equation. they always knew what they wanted and went for it, including each other.

WILL • old married couple, and i'm glad these uppity haters have each other because if they didn't they would be friendless. rhys and will work because while they may hide who they really are to the rest of the world for whatever reasons, they don't do that with each other. i don't see them as friends that hide secrets from each other, maybe because they can read each other too well, but i'd like to think it's because they know they need each other to function in the world. and not in a dependent kind of way, but in a way that... it's like they always know that they have each other's back, are going through the same experiences and can bond over that. i just love them, they hate the world but find it within themselves to hate each other a little less.
JULIET • juliet was made for rhys, and if it wasn't for her, he would have never married, never produced children and probably just gone off to russia to live out his days making a lot of money and judging/hating everyone except for will. juliet also... has made rhys like people more? if that's even possible. he actually loves his children (don't let them hear that), and while he would never, at this point, openly express his feelings for juliet, he knows how they feel about each other and that's all that matters. i think, inadvertently, unknowingly, they have changed each other for the better. i mean, look at them, functioning normally with a family in public. while he secretly threatens to divorce juliet practically everyday, rhys knows that no matter what happens, they will always be meant for each other, and come back to each other in the end. in a strange way, they are one of the highest functioning otps i have in that sense; they know they can never be one without the other.

BOOKS • EDWARD'S FIRST LOVE. he is obviously not an overt person, or even someone that is in possession of stunning social skills, so books, for him, were the escape and teachings that he otherwise had no outlet for. and while edward is incredibly smart, he knows that he lacks a lot from being... like everyone else? if that makes sense. and for him, books and stories will always be that reprieve, something he can always look to for guidance, understanding and comfort from a life that he obviously stumbles through. i don't think he had many friends before hogwarts, so to make up for that his friends were the ones on the pages, in between the lines of the stories. his passion for his work will never die, for when it comes to editing, it is all about giving back, experiencing, and being what it is that books have unwaveringly provided for him.
RACHEL • i'm still not quite sure how to label his and rachel's relationship, but when he/i think about them, edward is instantly at ease. for a long time i think he saw rachel as someone that would guide and protect him, while at the same time be completely honest with him, which i don't think many people, aside from derek, really are. and it's not like they are an especially needy, or chatty pair of friends, but i think that is what makes them work. or at least, connects them on a level where he absolutely insisted that rachel be on this list. they have experienced a lot together (memory loss anyone), or within the same capacity, and because of that i think edward sees rachel as one of his truest friends. anyone that can make edward more social/a normal person is honestly a saint, and apart of him knows that he will forever be in debt to rachel for being such a constant friend to him through the years. honestly without her, and therefore giada and derek, i doubt he would have had any social interaction at all in his life.
DEREK •
GRACIELA • graciela makes edward want to have children, and be married, and grow old in a cottage with farm animals, and just live out a fairy-tale life. which, in all honesty, edward did not think was in his cards, as someone incredibly self-aware. so everyday for him with her is just... he honestly can't believe it half the time. she is so beautiful, and so intelligent, and so caring, apart of him is in awe that she even took the time to notice him. and not even that, but like him, and want to date him. i think out of everyone, graciela had made edward loosen his tightly wound self, and started enjoying the little things in life outside of novels. all he wants to do is make her a queen, provide the entire world to her if he could, for how he makes her feel.

michal conway h.a. lynch

SETH • michal likes his women, that is obvious, but he doesn't trust, respect, care for, or need any of them as much as he does seth. it is a bit harsh, for someone who thinks of himself as laid back, and someone that was put on this earth to keep seth in check, but it's the truth. despite how they may tease and bring each other down, when it comes down to it, michal would do anything for seth. bail him out of jail, or help him bury a dead body, the loyal gryffindor within michal is reserved for seth alone in that aspect. i really have no idea where michal would be without seth in his life, honestly, because for him, seth has been that constant, that staple that will always be there through whatever it is going on, thick and thin. michal has a funny way of showing it, but he does deeply care for seth, and i think they bring out the best in each other when they aren't being trolls or trying to be cool.
LARKIN •
HOWELL • OMG MICHAL LOVES HOWELL SO MUCH I CAN'T EVEN EXPLAIN IT HE JUST GETS IRRATIONALLY PROTECTIVE AND INVOLVED WHEN IT COMES TO HIM AND HE JUST WANTS HOWELL TO BE HAPPY FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE AND MICHAL IS CONVINCED HE IS THE ONLY ONE TO HELP HIM ACHIEVE THAT. I honestly can't quite explain why michal is so determined and so territorial of howell, he just is. they must have shared some really preciously emotional exchange during howell's early days at falmouth in which michal felt forever bound to him, because michal definitely has never shown so much interest in one person for no apparent reason before ever. michal, obviously, has his issues with his siblings (which sometimes, despite his melodramatics, is not his fault), so i think when it comes to howell it's all that brotherly side of him clawing its way through. and, a bit of him firmly believing that howell is this pure and innocent, yet a bit damaged, little youngin' and michal is just like I MUST PROTECT THIS PRECIOUS THING but he isn't exactly the most well prepared for guardian/mentorship. BUT HE TRIES, HE TRIES WITH THE BEST OF INTENTS. michal likens himself to howell's mother/father/belligerent older brother and howell his little baby bird child.

JULIET • juliet is without a doubt the only person in the entire world that caradoc would willingly, out loud, without prompting or incentive, declare his devotion and love for. and while they were usually complete brats to each other, when the times got rough and serious, he would've unwaveringly done anything for her. i mean, he forced rhys to plan on marrying her so she wouldn't get tied up in his death eater/order mess. they raised each other, caradoc views juliet as the only family he has, and therefore one of the most important things in his life, if not the most important for a very long time.
RACHEL • for caradoc, rachel was just... this amazing untouchable girl that had no problem matching his wit and intelligence, in addition to the only person capable of rejecting ~charm and influence on the female population. they are similar in many, many ways, more then i think they would like to admit, and i think that's why their romance was fated to be short lived. that, however, doesn't change the fact that i think he will always see her as the one that got away, and even more someone he will always respect and care for, even if it must be from afar. i think rachel was the first person that actually made caradoc stop and think that.... he can't always be selfish because his actions get to the point where it effects people he cares about.
EMMELINE • i feel like writing this is almost like beating a dead horse because it's been established, but for as someone as selfish and self-preserving as caradoc to actually give up everything he has for one person is just... frankly unbelievable. and so touching. it made me a proud mama. emmeline has him twisted in ways i never really thought a character like him could be, but again, in a good way. she makes him selfless, and caring, and the fact that she is getting children out of him despite being so vehemently against it is simply another attest to how much he cares about her.

HOWELL •
DEDALUS • ralph would be dead if it wasn't for dedalus. he owes him is life, over and over again, in metaphorical and literal ways, and for that ralph will never leave, forget, or stop supporting dedalus. i think what makes them work is that they fill what they personally lack for each other. ralph isn't an especially smart person, which dedalus is, and dedalus isn't exactly sociable or anywhere near it, which ralph is. together they make an entirely precious and worthy human being, which makes me happy. dedalus saved ralph from the house fire, he introduced him to the longbottoms, and got him into the order--- ralph only hopes that one day he can somehow even remotely repay dedalus for all he's done for him, even though in reality he doesn't need to, because all they are is selfless to each other.
MIRANDA • miranda, to ralph, is everything good and worthwhile to him concerning the wizarding world. i think for a while he toyed with making it through hogwarts and kind of returning to the muggle world with magic as his something special, but it was miranda that made him firmly believed the wizarding world is where he belonged. they are not people that try to be something they're not, and for that, i think that is what makes them work. they don't lie to each other, hide things, or try to delude themselves. it is because of that that ralph seeks everyday to make their relationship stronger, and happier, because that is all they really need. they don't need a lot of money, or fame, or even other people to be happy, and their simple manner of life is what makes him love her more and more.
FRANK & ALICE • ralph doesn't have any siblings, and for him, the longbottoms were the older brother and sister he never had. their departure from society struck ralph a lot more than he will ever let on, i think, because to him.... they were everything to him. they took him in, and rebuilt his life from the ground up with him, they helped bring him and miranda back together, they unofficially adopted him, frank viewed him as someone on equal level of importance as neville. and for that, ralph will never be able to stop loving, respecting and missing the longbottoms and everything they provided for him. they were, in his eyes, nothing short of adoptive parents that took him into a world he previously felt lost in.

adrian mattias

TONY • adrian doesn't have many friends for many reasons, but tony is the one person that makes all that reality okay. i couldn't even tell you how they became friends, or why it is that they are seemingly so obsessed with each other, but i know without a doubt that their old married couple relationship rivals that of rhys and will's. adrian would do anything for tony, and maybe that's because he stuck through with him in the good and bad of their hogwarts experience, and adrian wants nothing more than for tony to be eternally happy for the rest of their lives. they just have the best bromance ever, i can barely explain it, but they work so well together.
ODETTE • while it's obviously one sided at this moment, adrian will never stop at rebuilding his relationship with odette. she, to him, is everything that he has ever dreamed of; a real family. and don't misunderstand, he loves his mother dearly, but for him... there was always something missing. at this point, he really wants nothing to do with their father, but odette.... he completes her in a way that only blood can. she's entirely miserable because of how he treated her, and she is a constant reminder of why he needs to be a better person, and look forward to the days when she simply accepts him, without a condescending remark or look. they'll get their eventually, i think, but there really isn't much she can do to stop him from deeply caring for her.
MAGGIE • man, maggie turned adrian into the lovably dumb and loyal person that he is today. she showed him what love really is, i think, having never truly, truly experienced it before in all its fullness, and everyday he thanks his lucky stars for catching her. like, he really doesn't understand why she even likes him, but he knows how much he loves her. it's insane, i can't even begin to describe... saying that he would do anything for her doesn't even begin to convey the amount of love and adoration he has for her. she makes him so happy, happier i think than any other single aspect of his life. she just... makes him want to be a better person, a good husband and a doting father just so that she can be proud of him. I JUST REALLY LIKE i know i joke about their golden coupleness, but i am hard pressed to find another couple of mine, like them, so... together and solidified concerning all the shit they deal with all the time.

HOWELL • THIS IS JUMPING THE GUN A BIT BUT their potential is just... i'm not really sure, but i love it. saoirse is not a particularly loving, emotional, or even friendly person, but when she thinks of howell she melts from this grumpy-cat-in-training to someone that wants to smile and smell flowers? and almost trust people? i think howell has the potential to help her be a better person, and she already practically trusts him which is... not something that can be said for many people in her life. they're young, and i think it helps that they are eerily similar concerning their past experiences/lives even though they don't know it yet. I'M JUST REALLY EXCITED TO SEE how they help each other grow, and be better people, because they out of any couple i have has the potential to do that flawlessly. i just get this great image of a beyonce/jay z power couple that do their own thing all the time and don't need to be all over each other everywhere in people's faces to be happy with their lives.

EMMELINE • emmeline and anneliese have always devoted unwavering support to each other. who else would write a book about their best friend's love life? and who else would stay quiet when their best friend married their undoubtable mortal enemy? what make anneliese and emmeline have such a strong connection and love is that they don't let anyone or anything else get in the way of each other, which makes them quietly special in their friendship. anneliese not knowing about emmeline's involvement in the order i think has subconsciously created space between them, but they aren't the kind of people that need to know everything that is going on about each other all the time to be close. that's what makes them work.
WILL • will came into anneliese's life at a turbulent time, and he was nothing but sweet and attractive and everything she needed in a significant other even though she wasn't looking for it. like emmeline and anneliese, will and anneliese share the ability to not let anyone else get in the way of them and how they feel for each other. and while this is in the future, i know that she will distance herself from will after OotP, but she would never stop loving him, thinking about him, or caring for him. their love is a subconscious kind, i think, one that doesn't need to be addressed or given attention to.

DRYSTAN • let's be honest odette would have died a lot time ago without drystan. he has been her best friend, practical brother and protector for how many years, and i question if they have ever really gotten into a huge fight because they both know they need each other in their lives, and know they wouldn't fair well without each other either. she would do anything for him, illegal, legal, what have you without blinking an eyelash. maybe it has something to do with their obvious missorting, or the fact that they are obviously twins in an au universe, but these two were cut from the same tree and for that i love them. no bullshit, which they are entirely too good at, no charade or facade, which i think keeps the real, true sides of them alive because of each other. in the fast-pace public world they are consumed by, i think they have kept each other true to who they are as people.
NOAH • if it wasn't for noah, odette will still be a drunken druggie spending her nights out far too late and thinking her life would be well spent between that and quidditch. he changed her for the better, without a doubt. and while she does have her occasional hiccup, he showed her that having a family, and children, was something that she wanted and would enjoy. they also are honestly only made for each other, being spectacularly sarcastic and miserable toward humanity, which is ironic because it in turn makes them.... happy and pleasant. who'd of thought? they are perfect for each other, the reason why they have the same friends, same mentality, same everything. everyday noah makes odette a better person, not in a changing her kind of way, but a way that makes her a better version of who she should be.

THOMAS • thomas and rose's relationship blurs the lines of what... relationships are. but in a good way! they are similar, and because of that I think they are able to get what they need from each other even if it's not exactly traditional. rose would do anything for thomas, without question, because she knows that without him during school, and now, she would be no where close to who she is as a person. which is still a work in progress, but at least she talks and stands up for herself most of the time. rose thinks of thomas like the ultimate mash up of a brother/adviser/exlover/ , someone that will always be there for her no matter what, and someone that will always have her best interest at heart. i think at one point during school she might have misread these thoughts as love, or maybe they are.... it's really unclear to me honestly. but regardless labeling what they have between them as simply friendship doesn't exactly encompass everything.

ASH - Frank
The ash wand cleaves to its one true master and ought not to be passed on or gifted from the original owner, because it will lose power and skill. This tendency is extreme if the core is of unicorn. Old superstitions regarding wands rarely bear close examination, but I find that the old rhyme regarding rowan, chestnut, ash and hazel wands (rowan gossips, chestnut drones, ash is stubborn, hazel moans) contains a small nugget of truth. Those witches and wizards best suited to ash wands are not, in my experience, lightly swayed from their beliefs or purposes. However, the brash or over-confident witch or wizard, who often insists on trying wands of this prestigious wood, will be disappointed by its effects. The ideal owner may be stubborn, and will certainly be courageous, but never crass or arrogant.

BEECH - Saoirse
The true match for a beech wand will be, if young, wise beyond his or her years, and if full-grown, rich in understanding and experience. Beech wands perform very weakly for the narrow-minded and intolerant. Such wizards and witches, having obtained a beech wand without having been suitably matched (yet coveting this most desirable, richly hued and highly prized wand wood), have often presented themselves at the homes of learned wandmakers such as myself, demanding to know the reason for their handsome wand’s lack of power. When properly matched, the beech wand is capable of a subtlety and artistry rarely seen in any other wood, hence its lustrous reputation.

BLACKTHORN - Caradoc
Blackthorn, which is a very unusual wand wood, has the reputation, in my view well-merited, of being best suited to a warrior. This does not necessarily mean that its owner practises the Dark Arts (although it is undeniable that those who do so will enjoy the blackthorn wand’s prodigious power); one finds blackthorn wands among the Aurors as well as among the denizens of Azkaban. It is a curious feature of the blackthorn bush, which sports wicked thorns, that it produces its sweetest berries after the hardest frosts, and the wands made from this wood appear to need to pass through danger or hardship with their owners to become truly bonded. Given this condition, the blackthorn wand will become as loyal and faithful a servant as one could wish.

CEDAR - Odette
Whenever I meet one who carries a cedar wand, I find strength of character and unusual loyalty. My father, Gervaise Ollivander, used always to say, ‘you will never fool the cedar carrier,’ and I agree: the cedar wand finds its perfect home where there is perspicacity and perception. I would go further than my father, however, in saying that I have never yet met the owner of a cedar wand whom I would care to cross, especially if harm is done to those of whom they are fond. The witch or wizard who is well-matched with cedar carries the potential to be a frightening adversary, which often comes as a shock to those who have thoughtlessly challenged them.

CHESTNUT - Nicola
Chestnut is a most curious wood that little character or traits of its own other than its attraction to witches and wizards who are skilled tamers of magical beasts, those who possess great gifts in Herbology, and those who are natural fliers. Instead, the wand of chestnut tends to take on character of the wand core and the owner. For example, when paired with dragon heartstring, chestnut wands may find their best match among those who are overfond of luxury and material things, and less scrupulous than they should be about how they are obtained. Conversely, three successive heads of the Wizengamot have possessed chestnut and unicorn wands, for this combination shows a predilection for those concerned with all manner of justice.

CYPRESS - Remus
Cypress wands are associated with nobility. The great medieval wandmaker, Geraint Ollivander, wrote that he was always honoured to match a cypress wand, for he knew he was meeting a witch or wizard who would die a heroic death. Fortunately, in these less blood-thirsty times, the possessors of cypress wands are rarely called upon to lay down their lives, though doubtless many of them would do so if required. Wands of cypress find their soul mates among the brave, the bold and the self-sacrificing: those who are unafraid to confront the shadows in their own and others’ natures.

DOGWOOD - Adian
Dogwood is one of my own personal favourites, and I have found that matching a dogwood wand with its ideal owner is always entertaining. Dogwood wands are quirky and mischievous; they have playful natures and insist upon partners who can provide them with scope for excitement and fun. It would be quite wrong, however, to deduce from this that dogwood wands are not capable of serious magic when called upon to do so; they have been known to perform outstanding spells under difficult conditions, and when paired with a suitably clever and ingenious witch or wizard, can produce dazzling enchantments. An interesting foible of many dogwood wands is that they refuse to perform non-verbal spells and they are often rather noisy.

EBONY - Rhys
This jet-black wand wood has an impressive appearance and reputation, being highly suited to all manner of combative magic, and to Transfiguration. Ebony is happiest in the hand of those with the courage to be themselves. Frequently non-conformist, highly individual or comfortable with the status of outsider, ebony wand owners have been found both among the ranks of the Order of the Phoenix and among the Death Eaters. In my experience the ebony wand’s perfect match is one who will hold fast to his or her beliefs, no matter what the external pressure, and will not be swayed lightly from their purpose.

ELM - Mackenzie
The unfounded belief that only pure-bloods can produce magic from elm wands was undoubtedly started by some elm wand owner seeking to prove his own blood credentials, for I have known perfect matches of elm wands who are Muggle-borns. The truth is that elm wands prefer owners with presence, magical dexterity and a certain native dignity. Of all wand woods, elm, in my experience, produces the fewest accidents, the least foolish errors, and the most elegant charms and spells; these are sophisticated wands, capable of highly advanced magic in the right hands (which, again, makes it highly desirable to those who espouse the pure-blood philosophy).

ENGLISH OAK - Adrian
A wand for good times and bad, this is a friend as loyal as the wizard who deserves it. Wands of English oak demand partners of strength, courage and fidelity. Less well-known is the propensity for owners of English oak wands to have powerful intuition, and, often, an affinity with the magic of the natural world, with the creatures and plants that are necessary to wizardkind for both magic and pleasure. The oak tree is called King of the Forest from the winter solstice up until the summer solstice, and its wood should only be collected during that time (holly becomes King as the days begin to shorten again, and so holly should only be gathered as the year wanes. This divide is believed to be the origin of the old superstition, “when his wand’s oak and hers is holly, then to marry would be folly,” a superstition that I have found baseless). It is said that Merlin’s wand was of English oak (though his grave has never been found, so this cannot be proven).

HAZEL - Ralph
A sensitive wand, hazel often reflects its owner’s emotional state, and works best for a master who understands and can manage their own feelings. Others should be very careful handling a hazel wand if its owner has recently lost their temper, or suffered a serious disappointment, because the wand will absorb such energy and discharge it unpredictably. The positive aspect of a hazel wand more than makes up for such minor discomforts, however, for it is capable of outstanding magic in the hands of the skillful, and is so devoted to its owner that it often ‘wilts’ (which is to say, it expels all its magic and refuses to perform, often necessitating the extraction of the core and its insertion into another casing, if the wand is still required) at the end of its master’s life (if the core is unicorn hair, however, there is no hope; the wand will almost certainly have ‘died’). Hazel wands also have the unique ability to detect water underground, and will emit silvery, tear-shaped puffs of smoke if passing over concealed springs and wells.

HORNBEAM - Edward
My own wand is made of hornbeam, and so it is with all due modesty that I state that hornbeam selects for its life mate the talented witch or wizard with a single, pure passion, which some might call obsession (though I prefer the term ‘vision’), which will almost always be realised. Hornbeam wands adapt more quickly than almost any other to their owner’s style of magic, and will become so personalised, so quickly, that other people will find them extremely difficult to use even for the most simple of spells. Hornbeam wands likewise absorb their owner’s code of honour, whatever that might be, and will refuse to perform acts - whether for good or ill - that do not tally with their master’s principles. A particularly fine-tuned and sentient wand.

LARCH - Rose
Strong, durable and warm in colour, larch has long been valued as an attractive and powerful wand wood. Its reputation for instilling courage and confidence in the user has ensured that demand has always outstripped supply. This much sought-after wand is, however, hard to please in the matter of ideal owners, and trickier to handle than many imagine. I find that it always creates wands of hidden talents and unexpected effects, which likewise describes the master who deserves it. It is often the case that the witch or wizard who belongs to the larch wand may never realise the full extent of their considerable talents until paired with it, but that they will then make an exceptional match.

LAUREL - Anneliese
It is said that a laurel wand cannot perform a dishonourable act, although in the quest for glory (a not uncommon goal for those best suited to these wands), I have known laurel wands perform powerful and sometimes lethal magic. Laurel wands are sometimes called fickle, but this is unfair. The laurel wand seems unable to tolerate laziness in a possessor, and it is in such conditions that it is most easily and willingly won away. Otherwise, it will cleave happily to its first match forever, and indeed has the unusual and engaging attribute of issuing a spontaneous lightning strike if another witch or wizard attempts to steal it.

MAPLE - Liddie
I have often found that those chosen by maple wands are by nature travellers and explorers; they are not stay-at-home wands, and prefer ambition in their witch or wizard, otherwise their magic grows heavy and lackluster. Fresh challenges and regular changes of scene cause this wand to literally shine, burnishing itself as it grows, with its partner, in ability and status. This is a beautiful and desirable wood, and wand quality maple has been among the most costly for centuries. Possession of a maple wand has long been a mark of status, because of its reputation as the wand of high achievers.

PEAR - Glenda
This golden-toned wood produces wands of splendid magical powers, which give of their best in the hands of the warm-hearted, the generous and the wise. Possessors of pear wands are, in my experience, usually popular and well-respected. I do not know of a single instance where a pear wand has been discovered in the possession of a Dark witch or wizard. Pear wands are among the most resilient, and I have often observed that they may still present a remarkable appearance of newness, even after many years of hard use.

PINE - Ollie
The straight-grained pine wand always chooses an independent, individual master who may be perceived as a loner, intriguing and perhaps mysterious. Pine wands enjoy being used creatively, and unlike some others, will adapt unprotestingly to new methods and spells. Many wandmakers insist that pine wands are able to detect, and perform best for, owners who are destined for long lives, including Garrick Ollivander who had never personally known the master of a pine wand to die young. The pine wand is one of those that is most sensitive to non-verbal magic.

RED OAK - Philippe
It may often be heard of the ignorant that red oak is an infallible sign of its owner’s hot temper. In fact, the true match for a red oak wand is possessed of unusually fast reactions, making it a perfect duelling wand. Less common than English oak, Garrick Ollivander found that its ideal master is light of touch, quick-witted and adaptable, often the creator of distinctive, trademark spells, and a good man or woman to have beside one in a fight. He also believed them to make for some of the most handsome wands

REDWOOD - Larkin
Wand-quality redwood is in short supply, yet constant demand, due to its reputation for bringing good fortune to its owner. As is usually the case with wandlore, the general populace have the truth back to front: redwood wands are not themselves lucky, but are strongly attracted to witches and wizards who already possess the admirable ability to fall on their feet, to make the right choice, to snatch advantage from catastrophe. The combination of such a witch or wizard with a redwood wand is always intriguing, and I generally expect to hear of exciting exploits when I send this special pairing out from my workshop.

ROWAN - Max
Rowan wood has always been much-favoured for wands, because it is reputed to be more protective than any other, and in my experience renders all manner of defensive charms especially strong and difficult to break. It is commonly stated that no Dark witch or wizard ever owned a rowan wand, and I cannot recall a single instance where one of my own rowan wands has gone on to do evil in the world. Rowan is most happily placed with the clear-headed and the pure-hearted, but this reputation for virtue ought not to fool anyone - these wands are the equal of any, often the better, and frequently out-perform others in duels.

SPRUCE - Michal Conway
Unskilled wandmakers call spruce a difficult wood, but in doing so they reveal their own ineptitude. It is quite true that it requires particular deftness to work with spruce, which produces wands that are ill-matched with cautious or nervous natures, and become positively dangerous in fumbling fingers. The spruce wand requires a firm hand, because it often appears to have its own ideas about what magic it ought to be called upon to produce. However, when a spruce wand meets its match - which, in my experience, is a bold spell-caster with a good sense of humour - it becomes a superb helper, intensely loyal to their owners and capable of producing particularly flamboyant and dramatic effects.

WILLOW - Mira
Willow is an uncommon wand wood with healing power, and I have noted that the ideal owner for a willow wand often has some (usually unwarranted) insecurity, however well they may try and hide it. While many confident customers insist on trying a willow wand (attracted by their handsome appearance and well-founded reputation for enabling advanced, non-verbal magic) my willow wands have consistently selected those of greatest potential, rather than those who feel they have little to learn. It has always been a proverb in my family that he who has furthest to travel will go fastest with willow.

YEW - Christopher
Yew wands are among the rarer kinds, and their ideal matches are likewise unusual, and occasionally notorious. The wand of yew is reputed to endow its possessor with the power of life and death, which might, of course, be said of all wands; and yet yew retains a particularly dark and fearsome reputation in the spheres of duelling and all curses. However, it is untrue to say (as those unlearned in wandlore often do) that those who use yew wands are more likely to be attracted to the Dark Arts than another. The witch or wizard best suited to a yew wand might equally prove a fierce protector of others. Wands hewn from these most long-lived trees have been found in the possession of heroes quite as often as of villains. Where wizards have been buried with wands of yew, the wand generally sprouts into a tree guarding the dead owner’s grave. What is certain, in my experience, is that the yew wand never chooses either a mediocre or a timid owner.
