i don't think it's unfounded because their village was small and they were in the same grade and katniss knew about him too i.e. him winning the wrestling tournament and his brothers and what his family was like. not to mention his father pointed her out to him when he was little :( he didn't go in with the intention of dying for her i think that haymitch just knew that peeta wouldn't let her die if he was there and that katniss was more of a "w/e bitch as long as i go home to prim"
