1) A break-in occurs at an Avengers' storage facility. Among the items stolen are several pieces of equipment from the likes of Mockingbird, Hawkeye, the Swordsman, etc... along with the Ronin costume. Most notably, whoever did it got in and out without being seen, almost like they knew everything about it.

2) Random appearances by Ronin in various small scuffles across the city, which includes some "team-ups" with various heroes, including some Avengers, who recognize, of course, the stolen stuff. Each time, though, Ronin gets away.

3) They decide to set a string to catch him, which happens to coincide with a time when Anya is visiting Buck, so she helps out. Cornered this time, Ronin is revealed to be... Steve Barton.

When Steve and other!Steve disappeared prior to the reboot, it did, indeed, throw them through time and space. But what it also did was overwrite the other!Steve with a copy of the "real" Steve's personality, effectively turning him into a copy. That is the one who went to the future and came back, not aware he'd ever lived another life. The "real" Steve had been trapped outside of space and time, until some fluctuation in the wall of reality deposited him back into the universe. A universe that, as far as he knows, is just a parallel one to the one he left.

Steve Barton is Ronin... the man without a world.

1) While out crime-busting and stopping some robbery or another, Steve accidentally kills one of the guys involved (maybe he gets in the way of an arrow, something like that).

2) Police clear him of any wrong doing, but this doesn't change what happened. More issues for Steve to have to deal with, more time with Samson. A civil suit from the criminal's family crops up.

3) In the meantime, a newer, more brutal vigilante starts showing up on the streets of NYC at night, badly brutalizing and possibly even killing some criminals.
3-a) This new vigilante encounters Jack/Guardian, who finds something oddly familiar about him.

4) Steve, as time goes on, complains of greater tiredness, even though he's apparently sleeping the night, thanks to his meds.

5) The new vigilante/killer is apprehended by the police and unmasked, revealing it to be Steve. He's arrested and put on trial.

6) Steve, of course, has no memories of any of the goings on that were happening. He's puzzled, angry, and confused.

7) Bail denied, the trial moves swiftly and largely against him (perhaps a little bit too well against him...)
7-a) possible jailhouse antics with any imprisoned super-villains

8) Just prior to sentencing, a robot breaks Steve out of prison and drags him off to a super-villain lair.

9) Egghead II, of the Masters of Evil (and operating independently of them on this one), has been the mastermind behind most of this affair. While the original accidental killing was just that, an accident, he saw it as an opportunity for vengeance against the son of the man who killed his father. He arranged to have Steve's sleeping pills drugged with certain psychoactive chemicals purchased from the criminal underworld, bribed judges and court officials, the whole shebang. And now he's going to kill him.

10) At which point, the Avengers (and more than likely Anya, and hey, let's get Jack involved here too), arrive to kick his ass sixteen ways to Sunday, having tracked Steve down via a GPS unit installed in his arm. The whole kit and kaboodle have a show down with Eggy and his robots, beating him soundly and either capturing him or he gets away, depending on how he's needed for future plots/if anyone else has immediate use for him.

11) This provides enough evidence to clear Steve, but the psychological scars remain...

Where Cobra was interested in the Serpent Crown and other goals for amassing power, Sidewinder is nothing more than a highly skilled gang leader. Hydra, AIM, the Maggia, ULTIMATUM, she doesn't care about the agendas of any of these other organizations. Instead, she is simply concerned with making as much money as humanly possible, hiring herself and the Society out to these groups. The promise of freedom from incarceration (either through her own teleportation power or through the very well paid lawyers) and a fair share of the cash is more than enough to sway most to her cause.

Where she acquired her technology (or whether what appears to be red, scaly skin is a mask or not), is unknown.

Powers: Sidewinder's cloak is a highly advanced piece of technology, able to teleport herself and others across continental distances. She possesses a moderate degree of combat training, but prefers not to enter the field herself. She is an excellent criminal strategist.

Rattler
Real Name: Karl Richstein

A German immigrant to the United States, Richstein was a scientist in the study of sound. Discovering how to harness sonic power for destructive ends, he tried to sell his device to the military, but they declined, saying that they'd already bought the technology from another scientist. Discovering that the other scientist had, in fact, stolen his plans, Richstein designed a snake-like costume with the sonic weapon in the tail and attempted to kill him. Though he was thwarted by local super-heroes, Richstein made enough of a name for himself to gain an invitation to the new Serpent Society. Though he originally declined, the change in leadership has prompted him to reconsider.

Powers: The tail of Rattler's costume possesses a powerful sonic hammer in it, capable of generating intense vibrations that can be used to shatter stone or create defensive vibratory screens. His costume is significantly padded to protect him from the effects of his weapon.

Princess Python
Real Name: Unknown

A mutant born with obvious reptillian characteristics, the woman known as Princess Python was abandoned as an infant and raised by circus freaks. In her early teens, she discovered that her reptilian appearance extended to the ability to communicate with and control snakes. While she first used this ability to aid in her act, her boyfriend eventually convinced her to use her power to commit acts of petty thievery. Caught and sentenced to a stint in juvenile hall, when she got out, she continued her life of crime.

Powers: Princess Python possesses the ability to mentally control snakes, usually bringing a "pet" boa constrictor and two or three smaller snakes with her on missions.

Anaconda
Real Name: Alexander Nathaniel Conda

Alex Conda previously worked as a foot soldier for Roxxon Oil with Bushmaster and Cottonmouth. When the three of them were grievously injured by the local resistance to a Middle East drilling operation, Roxxon used the opportunity to rebuild each of them with bioncs and make them over into their personal Serpent Squad. Defeated by SHIELD in a minor international scuffle, Conda and the others spent several years in federal prison. They were eventually released after legal maneuvering by Sidewinder, who extended an invitation to join the reforming Serpent Society. The three accepted.

Powers: Anaconda possesses bionic arms and a bionically reinforced muscular structure, giving him super-human strength. His arms can extend up to 75 feet each, giving him super-human crushing ability. His snake-helmet possesses filters that enable him to submerge for periods of up to two hours. His costume is made of a highly reinforced carbon fiber body armor. He is a skilled fighter.

Cottonmouth
Real Name: Mathew Cotton

Matthew Cotton previously worked as a foot soldier for Roxxon Oil with Bushmaster and Anaconda. The three accepted.

Powers: Nearly all of Cottonmouth's skull was rebuilt with bionics, giving him secondary adamantium fangs, the ability to open his mouth wide enough to fit a human head in his mouth, and bionic jaw muscles strong enough to crush stone. His is a skilled fighter.

Bushmaster
Real Name: Brad Masters

Brad Masters previously worked as a foot soldier for Roxxon Oil with Cottonmouth and Anaconda. The three accepted.

Powers: Bushmaster's entire lower torso has been replaced by a bionic snake tail, giving him significant overland speed and the ability to use it as a weapon. His arms have likewise been replaced by bionics and give him enhanced strength as well as dual "fang" blades that extend from his wrists.

Gorgon
Petros Papadopoulos

A Greek-American mythology expert and archeologist, Papadopoulos was on an archeological dig when he discovered the long lost lair of the gorgon, Medusa. Still being tended to by Medusa's descendants, they promised him incredible power in return for keeping their secret. When he agreed, he found himself back outside, but having been transformed into a gorgon-like creature himself. He went on a rampage and was ultimately stopped by Hercules. His mind now quite snapped, he would return to a life of villainy time and time again.

Powers: Gorgon possesses a thick scaly hide and super-human strength. The snakes on his head shoot energy beams from their mouths which can temporarily transform anything they hit to stone for period of up to one hour.

Killer Kobra
Real Name: N/A

One of the few reptiles evolved by the High Evolutionary, Killer Kobra has modeled himself after the original Cobra, foe of the Mighty Thor. A devotee to the teachings of the Man-Wolf, he desires nothing less than the death of all humans, but will ally himself with this group in order to slay his enemies of his god. Killer Kobra was previously a member of the Offenders and battled the Defenders, but left the group after finding them unsuited to his own goals. Why he has joined the Serpent Society is unknown.

Powers: Kobra possesses limited super-strength (class 5), speed, reflexes, and agility five times that of a human, extreme flexibility, and poisonous fangs and claws.

How long had he been gone? Days? Months? Years? He’d lost all track of time in that vortex. And there was no guarantee that time in there matched up in any way, shape, or form to time in his own world. There wasn’t even any indication that time here matched up at all.

And what was that damn clanking sound?

Steve looked up and realized what the damn clanking sound had been. A giant mechanical construction of some kind, easily twelve feet tall, a pod on three long, spindly legs. It spoke—or at least he assumed it did—in some kind of gibberish, but whether alien or machine code, he didn’t know. What he did recognize was that it was pointing the barrel of a weapon at him. The barrel glowed briefly… and fired.

Steve was already moving, putting his acrobatic skills to the test, jumping and tumbling over the rubble. He landed hard, off balance as a blast nearly took him apart. But he was not without recourse. He had no weapons, true, but in his hands… everything became a weapon. He waited until just the right time, then threw a small rock. Straight down the gun’s barrel. Something inside jammed and the machine blew up with a spectacular explosion.

He was already moving. Where there was one… there would be more.

five weeks later

It hadn’t taken long after his arrival for Steve to encounter the rebellion. They hadn’t trusted him at first—and why should they have, he was the first free human other than their own any of them had seen in years—but eventually, he had worked his way into their trust and became a valued member in their fight against the Kru’ll. With a little fresh perspective and super-hero know-how, they’d had more successes with his help than they’d had in some time.

The Kru’ll. They had conquered the planet sometime in the early nineteen fifties. What few heroes had existed during that time, Marvel Boy, the 3-D Man, and the like, had died. One of the earliest acts of the war against the Kru’ll had been the public execution of Captain America. Not the real Captain America, of course, but the insane Commie-buster of the 50’s. The real Cap, well, with all the global changes and the enslavement of humanity, he was probably dead. And the heroes of the Age of Marvels had likely never been born, killed in infancy, or worse, born in time to grow up in the slave pits and factories to feed the Kru’ll empire.

“Steven?” Trala purred, looking in his direction. “Are you all right?” Trala was like many of the resistance, a second generation mutate, descended from the original humans who the Kru’ll had experimented upon, fused with animal DNA. Her form spoke as much cat as human and he knew that she desired him.

“Just… lost in thought,” he said. He should have been looking for a way home. But with society nearly destroyed… there likely wasn’t one. And these people… they needed him. What had been a couple dozen survivors, barely eking out an existence in the shadow of alien rule had slowly grown to number over a hundred, thanks to his help in freeing slaves and captives and those imprisoned in labs.

Anya. He missed her every moment that his thoughts weren’t focused on fighting. Every idle moment, every spare breath, and in his dreams at night, he thought about the girl he had left behind. Who had seen him forcibly ripped away. Who might even think he was dead. The longer he fought, the more worried he became that that he was never going to see his home, his family, or his love again.

But he could not give in to that thought. He would find his way back. Or they would find him.

He moved away as Trala tried to embrace him. “I just need to be alone for a while.”

Four weeks after

It had been a mistake, he’d realized. Humans and even mutates looked more or less alike to the Kru’ll, but for one that was truly exceptional, well, they could take notice. Especially when he’d started using the weapon he was most comfortable with—arrows. He’d taken lives, many of them, and told himself that the killings were just. That they were at war, fighting for the survival of humanity. But his notable weapon, notable skill, had made him noticeable.

They’d singled him out for capture during a raid. Taken him prisoner. Taken him to the Kru’ll some of the prisoners they’d freed had called “Doctor Death.”

The Kru’ll were ugly things, tall, powerful bodied creatures with heads like squid. “You will tell us where the others hide.”

“Go to hell, ugly.”

Pain, from the electrodes over his body, lanced through his body.

“Where are they?!”

“I… said.. go.. to hell…!”

A gleaming blade appeared in “Doctor Death”’s hands. Steve felt the cold metal rest against his right shoulder.

“You will not talk?”

“Go. To. Hell.”

His world became a nightmare of pain, even as he heard shouts and violence somewhere in the distance

three weeks after…

With the increase in man-power, especially those freed from the factories and labs, those who understood the technology of this new world had swelled their ranks. The technology they could steal to fight with, to heal themselves, and even to grow more food to sustain themselves.

And even the technology to replace lost limbs.

He flexed metal fingers, feeling the shift and pressure without the true sensation of touch and movement.

How long had it been? He’d stopped counting the days.

But he would fight until the Earth was free. Or die trying.

He had made a promise to go home. One he intended to keep.

But he had also made a promise to these people. One he intended to keep.

Two weeks later…

“Sir, sir!”

“What is it, Rax?” Steve asked the boy, who wouldn’t have been more than fourteen. But still a fighter. Still fighting for this planet’s future.

“We… we were scavenging in the city, and… we found something!”

Possessing no known super-human powers (bar a brief stretch of time when he assumed the Goliath identity), Steve Barton should never the less be considered one of the most skilled fighters in the world, though there are many others who outclass him. He has been trained in various fighting techniques (including Karate, Judo, and Boxing) by his father, mother, Captain America, and Kate Bishop. From the same, he has received extensive weapons training, to the point where virtually anything in his hands can be used as a weapon.

Bow and Arrow
Rather than the typical longbow, Steve makes use of a short range, collapsible compound bow that provides greater power over shorter distances.

Steve carries a wide variety of arrows, some of which come pre-loaded, but the rest of which are standard shafts with variable arrow-heads.

Typically, about 5 to 10 of these are standard bladed arrow heads, while the rest include a mixture of grappling line arrows, explosive arrows, stun arrows, net arrows, gas-bomb arrows, adhesive glue arrows, cryonic arrows, flare arrows, fire arrows, tracking bug arrows, and others. When given time, Steve typically customizes his arsenal for whatever load best fits the mission.

Battle Staves
Steve carries two hollow steel-alloy poles (battles staves) each extendable to four feet. He uses these staves as fighting clubs, and the can screwed them together to be used as a bo-staff or javelin, or extend to an eight-foot vaulting pole.

Sword
Steve carries, though rarely uses, a short sword he has sometimes referred to as a Power-Sword. One version was shown the ability to discharge energy bolts, but it is unknown if the version he currently carries still does.

Boomerangs
A recent addition to his arsenal, picked up in Wakanda, Steve now carries a pair of boomerangs lightly laced with enough Vibranium to give them rebounding properties similar to shield's made of the same material.

Random Character Thoughts II

Joe: is high on the list of underdeveloped characters. The son of the Juggernaut, he has almost no interest in being a super-hero himself, instead being quite happy to be the all purpose mechanic, handyman, and gardener for the Xaivier's Institute. He's well liked by everyone, flirts heavily with Lyta, has a solid friendship with Misha, and has generally been an all-purpose background character and spear character.

He'll be making the move to Excalibur in order to get more screen time. Originally moving just to help get the team set up in their HQ and all
their gear and such, he'll be pulled along into the adventures and wind up staying to provide some much needed muscle and slowly find that he likes being in the limelight.

But he won't be wearing a costume.

Needs to happen: Develop greater interest in using his powers and acting as a hero.

Plots: Excalibur formation

*

Asleif: The Goddess of Being a Bitch and go-to sorceress for the Defenders. Also the hardest of my characters to write, simply because between the necessary speech patterns and her general dislike for everyone and everything, her voice needs to be quite exact. Asleif is also being shifted out of the picture in favor of Dawn, partially, because her character arc is largely done. She's gained respect for her siblings, recognized her own shortcommings, made friends (Vincent), and gained real appreciation for a mortal (Zoey). There's not much further for her to go, and I don't want to stagnate. So the last thing she needs to gain is appreciation for humanity in general, which she'll gain by being temporarily subsumed within Dawn, while retaining all the memories after their split. This will allow her to go off (put return as necessary).

Dawn's own arc is partially that of the inexperienced and reluctant hero. Didn't ask for any of this, doesn't have a clue what she's doing, but just might turn out to be good at it.

Needs to happen: Outlined above.

Plots: her own personal plot/Dawn's plot of development, involvment in Dormamu. Offenders/Defenders War.

*

Andrea: is something of a fixed position character, though I think that's reasonably common to any of the FF. The comic versions are certainly some of the more static characters of comicdom. But Andrea perfect fills the Thing role, of the slightly different outsider but with considerable warmth.

There will, however, certainly be consquences and reactions to Vincent's decisions in Asgard, as well as fall out from the brief time spent as a human.

Needs to happen: Continue to question the nature of her existance (she wants to be accepted as human without actually being human, physically), see what happens with her relationship with Vincent.

FF in general, want to see Mole Man and Negative Zone and Microverse stuff.

Plots: Frighftul Four plot, eventually.

*

Toni: Anya's best friend, but is slowly developing into something more than that. Will be dealing with extremely trauamatic fallout from the Horseman thing, as well as developing new energy based abilities to replace her lost metalkinesis. She's also going to have to deal with what was a very promising relationship with Charlie being cut short and probably going quite out of her mind with worry. There's also her continuing anxiety over her status as a mutant, especially being an "outed" one. It already cost her a boyfriend and kept her out of proper school for the remainder of her senior year. College will give her some break, but how big...

Though neither powerset was actually developed with that thought in mind, both her original and her second set (manipulating energies in the EM spectrum) make Toni ideal for taking down a Stark gone rogue. I keep coming back to the idea that that's intentional, on some level. I certainly wouldn't put it past comic versions of Tony Stark to set something like that up.

Needs to happen: Develop relationship with Charlie so his absence hurts more. Work through guilt over time as a horsemen. Develop and master new powers.

Plots: None specific.

*

Abigail Hawk: is my newest acquistion. A sass-talking, sharp-shooting, hard-drinking, tough as nails woman. And a time traveler. She's well adapted to the future, so should have no problems interacting with the other independents, especially since she strides the line between super-hero and regular PI. She's the "Two-Gun Kid" out of honor to her father and because a catchy name and identity gets her more clients than just being a regular PI/Bounty Hunter (hey, it worked for Luke and Danny).

She's also, from her relative perspective, met the Young Avengers a handful of times. Likely will appear during the wild west bit of 12 Steps, and will definitely appear during Steve and Charlie's Excellent Adventure, where she'll hint that something happened between the two of them (though it might be in Charlie's relative future).

Though the two will never likely meet, she dislikes Andrea and Andy quite a bit.

Needs to happen: be introduced, get invovled in independenty stuffs.

Plots: Probably at least some participation in the upcoming independent plots of gangwar, appearances in any wild west stories.

Steve: is 1) a member of the Avengers, 2) a weapons expert (need to play up his fighting skills, like Roy or Bullseye), 3) Charli'e s best friend ,4) Anya's boyfriend, and 5) Suffering from a severe inferiority complex.

Steve was totally intended to be the hotheaded loudmouthed skirtchaser fo the Avengers originally. But somehow or another, he ended up falling hard for Anya and developing into a relationship kinda guy. He's a reluctant leader, but when he does lead, he generally does a good job in spite of hating every moment of it. He'll likely be stepping back into this role onceCharlie is temporarily out of the picture.

The inferiority complex is an intesting one, considering he's more than proven his worth as an Avenger, but it still definitely bothers him that he's (one of) the least powerful members of the team; he was thrilled being Goliath. Despite being totally in love with her, he still can't figure out what a brilliant, rich, and all around amazing girl like Anya is doing with what he calls a schmuck like him.

Steve has no idea what he wants to do with his life outside of Avenging.

Needs to happen: Develop more confidence, continue with his relationship with Anya, illustrate just how dangerous he can be in a fight.

Upcoming plots: Empress II, whatever Avengers stuff goes on for the ones left behind, and eventually "Steve and Charlie's Excellent Adventure."

**

Argo: is, without a doubt, the lead complicated of all my characters. He wants to fight, drink, celebrate, and seduce as many women as possible. He might even be said to be the comedy character of my set. Uses lots of exclamation points when he speaks.

Despite being fairly simple, Argo does have a layer of complexity. He's immortal. The good kind. He'll be young looking and strong and powerful pretty much forever. As Jeff pointed out, unlike the Asgardians, the Olympians have endless tomorrows and know it. But at the same time, Argo, on some level, knows enough of this to wall himself off from forming permanent romantic attachments. Better to just bed hop and love everyone just a little bit, than to give his heartto someone and bear the pain of losing them. (And thanks to Nicole for helping me figure this one out)

In im's, and as will likely be played out some in game, Argo will develop a strong friendship with Alisa. Whether this can cause him to change his ways or lead anywhere is yet up for debate.

Needs to Happen: Argo can only change so much and remain fundamentally Argo, so I'm not "character development" plot heavy with him.

Upcoming Plots: Working on "Argo and the Champions: The Lightning Theif", other Champions stuff.

*

Marrina: has developed an incredible amount for a character on one of the more secondary teams. She's been reunited with a long-lost father, found a very sweet boyfriend (one two years her junior and still a minor, something that may eventually need to be addressed), and helped save the world several times now.

Basically a smalltown girl, with some slight big city traits, Marrina's story is really a question of identitty. Is she a Princess? Is she a super-hero? Or, is she a monster? One quarter Atlantean, one quarter human, and half Plodex, Marrina's genetic code possibly holds all kinds of surprises. Most Plodex are monsters and the more she learns about that part of herself, the more she'll be afraid that she could be one too. Her mother, after all, turned into a giant sea monster that had to be killed. And there were lots of other eggs. Not that she's aware of these, but they're out there to be tapped.

The Atlantis issue too, will become a stronger one. Questions on her loyalty, of course. There'll be a coronation coming up and plenty of chances for Atlantean noblemen to express their displeasure with her. Or worse, the ones who want to mold her into a proper princess who will continue the bloodline. Which should put pressue on her relationship.

Needs to happen: Continue questions of identity. Keep threading Atlantis and Plodex plot-weaves. Also, needs to receive a chunk of Oracle, Inc. stock and moneys, further push the identity issue.

Plots: Plotting a Master of the World/Plodex plot, official coronation ceremony, possible "Heirs" plot sometime in the future.

*

Rachel: has been plotted with less than she should be, for what should be one of the game's more important characters, to the X-side what Anya and Charlie are to the Avengers. She has, however, accepted greater levels of her power, putting aside her fears about destroying the Earth and killing her friends in favor of possibly inherriting a source of life and protection.

De and I are, however, cooking up a plot which will give her plenty of action and responsibility, as well as continuing to look at her fears of the power in the Grey and Summers bloodlines.

Needs to happen: Rachel is, paradoxically, the youngest of the children of the original X-Men, despite Scott and Jean probably having been together the longest. Regardless of ages, the five of them need to have a plot together. Rachel also needs to deal with/interact with her cousin Andrew at some point.

Plots: Possible X-Men space plot, where she'd be the ideal choice to go.

*

Rose: is the crack-ish pairing character of my set. The answer to what if Wolverine had a daughter. She's very much like him and adapting remarkably well to a new universe. She likes David, a lot, puts up with Prince Dork remarkably well, but cannot stand Rachel. The feeling is mutal and it's probably a good thing I play both, because it could get rather ugly between the two of them. Rose is, certainly, though, still trying to find her place in the nextgen universe, trying to form relationships with both Logan and Jean as best she can.

She's a generally angry young woman, easily annoyed, though curiously doesn't actually swear (promised mom she wouldn't).

Rose has formed a strong friendship with Joey, though it's not romantic as of yet, it's remarkably sweet.

Rose also has yet to actually win any of the fights she's been in, something which annoys her to no end.

She'll be playing a part in the plot mentioned above.

Needs to happen: More time with the brothers, a few victories under her belt.

Plots: A Mr. Sinister/Rachel/Grey-Summers bloodline plot is in the works, various adventures with the X-Men.
