who doesn't want a rockstar for a professor?

urien "URI" rice

urien rice was born one rainy day in cardiff. so, really, pretty much any day would qualify, but in this case the day happened to be 27 january 1965. uri was the middle of three kids, and certainly the brattiest of the three. his older brother was a model child - polite, studious, athletic, friendly, everything a parent could ask for. his little sister wasn't near as nice, but she was charming and adults thought her spunk to be 'cute'. uri, on the other hand, had no sense of tact, tended to get bored and fall asleep during school, and was often sin binned for being too rough in rugby, which takes some doing. so the whole family was understandably shocked when he was eleven years old and recieved a certain letter. uri had magic? uri? his parents immediately started worrying about the sheer amount of damage he'd be able to do with such things at his disposal. but they couldn't say no, and uri was off to hogwarts! the sorting hat had a hard time, waffling back and forth between gryffindor and hufflepuff, but eventually settled on gryffindor, as uri's general laziness tended to outweigh his remarkable sense of loyalty. he loved being a gryffindor - loud, obnoxious, very un-studious group that they were - and also found himself fascinated with the magical world in general (it all started with quidditch, which he fell in love with and was then disappointed to find out that flying gave him extreme vertigo). he gained minor fame in the school for being possibly the only student to sit at rapt attention through binns' lectures, and every year he was at the very top of scores for history of magic. his other classes, well, he generally managed to force acceptables out of through sheer bullshitting on exams - he was minorly better at charms and defense than he was at any of the other core classes, but he wasn't top in either. history was his forte. the summer of 1980, however, he gained a new area of talent. his brother fancied himself a musician, and gathered some friends into a band that practiced at the rice house (to the mounting frustration of mr. and mrs. rice). bored one day, uri wandered the house messing with things he was told a million and eight times never to touch, and eventually worked his way over to the drum set. as any teenager would, he sat down and started banging away - but he soon found out that it was fun. he bullied his brother's friend into teaching him the basics, and was soon drumming away on everything his drumsticks wouldn't break (and, occasionally, things that they did, which he would always then walk away from very fast). even when he returned to hogwarts, he kept drumming away at everything possible, driving his roomates up the wall (and more than once getting him kicked out of the room). of course, right about then the war really hit, and he found his drumming an excellent way of keeping his mind off the fact that a good portion of the magical world that he loved wanted to kill him for how he was born.

he hadn't really given a lot of thought to joining a band, but when the opportunity popped up after he finished hogwarts, he wasn't going to say no. thankfully, the band he became part of was filled with talent, and actually took off, unlike so very many bands. and then it grew higher, and higher, and soon the weird sisters were one of the - if not the - best-known wizarding bands around. uri, who had been expecting to play some gigs here and there and just have fun, was more than a little shocked by the sudden fame. he had grown into a calm, easy-going adult, though, and managed to accept it all gracefully. and take some advantage of it, of course, he wasn't that grown up. after years of living it up, and having two kids by two different women, neither of whom he married, uri was starting to grow tired of being a rockstar (and trying to keep his borderline insane bandmates out of trouble). lucky for him, around the same time he was approaching burnout, dear old professor binns apparently figured out that he had, indeed, died, and it was time for him to move on, leaving a position at hogwarts open. of course it was tough, the band was pretty much his family, but uri needed a change of pace before he completely flipped out. so in 2002, urien rice became the new history of magic professor at hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. the students were understandably excited to have a real live rockstar as a professor - even if it was just the drummer - and kids seemed more focused on getting his autograph than paying attention. uri, though, was now committed to the idea of being a professor, and refused to indulge in any rockstar antics in front of his new students (now, on the weekends at bars was something else entirely). He didn't quite ignore students who wanted to talk just about the weird sisters, but it came close, leading to numerous tabloid rumors that he hated the others in the band - a complete crock, of course, he loved the guys, but the weird sisters didn't exactly feature prominently in the goblin rebellion of 1472, so he didn't see why it was relevant. eventually the students settled down and became used to being taught by a celebrity - he was a pretty good teacher (a magnificent improvement upon binns) whose enthusiasm for the subject tended to liven up even the most boring lessons. he did, however, have no room for sheer stupidity in the classroom, and likes to live and teach the belief that people who make stupid comments should recieve an insulting one in turn. that said, he doesn't 'pick on' anyone - thanks to his own past (and, okay, somewhat present) as a slacker, he's fairly skilled in picking up which kids are geniuinely lost and confused, and which just didn't put the effort in. still, professor rice is generally considered the least favorite professor when it comes to detentions - sure, some make you do manual labor or put you in physical danger, but professor rice? will make you copy out the entire definition of 'to be' from the dictionary. by hand. in crayon. using a different color for each letter. needless to say, students are very well behaved in his classroom.
