Weaknesses: He is stubborn. He doesn’t always take things as seriously as he should. (He can have a little too much fun at times.) He’s walled off some pretty intense stuff emotionally.

Detailed personality:
Rhys is relatively easy going. Though when he does set his mind on something he will not relent until an outcome is attained. Sometimes he sets his mind on very stupid things. Other times he becomes an Auror. He doesn’t always think things through though. Rhys does try to keep things light if possible - he likes to have a good time and he likes others to as well. He is caring and fiercely loyal. He does have some baggage though - he’s never really dealt with the death of his sister. Becoming an Auror was meant to do that.. but it’s not that simple. He’s walled certain emotions in in an effort to contain that which means that he can be a little.. lacking when it comes to more serious things. He’s still a little(/lot) immature, I think.

Personal History:
Despite coming from a (mostly) pure magical line, Rhys’ family didn’t buy into the pure blooded superiority. Wyn and Helena taught their children to respect everyone no matter their background. This wasn’t too much of a problem for them, even during the earlier days of Voldemort’s return. But as Voldemort and his supporters gained more of a foothold, the Llewelyn’s began to feel the ripples. Both Anwen and Rhys had issues at school with certain parties, and Wyn and Helena found themselves embroiled in the controversy in Wales. They tried to keep their children from returning to Hogwarts after Dumbledore’s death, but they had raised two headstrong children who were simply not staying in Wales. As both the Ministry and the School came under Voldemort’s influence their world was turned upside down and Anwen and Rhys were forced to remain at Hogwarts (though Anwen wanted to stay and resist the rule with her fellow students, meaning that Rhys wanted to stay as well.)

More personally for Rhys - he hasn’t really changed much since his youth. He was always a happy, anything goes kind of kid with these intense moments of direction. He would have to collect that chocolate frog card or beat that kid at gobstones. Master that spell, help his friend master that spell. His little ‘projects’ could sometimes get him into trouble, but they were usually pretty innocent. He was at his best around those he cared about. In his earlier years, and even those first few years at Hogwarts, that was largely his sister, Anwen. She was older than him (also a Gryff) and always seemed to know where she was headed. Rhys liked to follow. She wanted to be an Auror - a fitting role given her bold and brave nature. And one she would never attain. She was one of the older students to stay and fight at the battle of Hogwarts while most of the other students - including Rhys - were evacuated. She was killed in the conflict and Rhys will never forgive himself for celebrating the death of Voldemort before mourning the loss of his sister. He hadn’t know at the time, but that didn’t change the guilt he felt. It took Rhys a little while, but once he set his mind on Anwen’s dream of becoming an Auror things seemed get better. He could be that happy kid again, though this time he had a real goal. That didn’t stop him from his other moments of whimsy though. He managed to cause a little (mostly innocent) trouble and have fun with his friends. Though he worked hard (and with help) and managed to obtain the required number of N.E.W.T.s to go on to Auror training after graduation. He hoped to do his sister proud.

Auror training was an intense three year program that saw Rhys work hard and play hard. He was closer than he had ever been to Anwen’s dream, and that seemed to free him up a lot more. He went through the training with a fellow student - though one he’d never paid much mind to during his schooling (probably due to house rivalry) - Alistair Burke. The two became firm friends during their training and have remained so ever since. They have a lot of fun and can cause a bit of trouble around the ‘office’. The two decided to relocate to the U.S.A. for a bit of a change - it may have been one of those ideas that simply had to happen. They have been stationed as guards at Dresden Academy - having to start from the bottom given the whole new country, agency and everything else. Rhys is looking forward to seeing what American schools are like. As well as American women. (Though not at the same time! That would be more trouble than he would like. XD)

Secrets: Although he seems intent on it, Ryder doesn’t actually want to turn out like the rest of his family. He likes being away from them at school for the most part.
Strengths: Ryder is quick. He can talk fast, cast fast and move fast when he has to. He’s not as stupid as he looks.
Weaknesses: He’s a bitch. His attitude/behaviour has held him back in a number of ways and will continue to do so. He’s not at all patient. He makes bad decisions when it counts. He can be lazy.

Detailed personality:
In Ryder’s world the best defence is a good offence. Whether that be with words, spells or a swift fist. Having been brought up in an undisciplined environment with two older and stronger brothers, Ryder developed a number of survival strategies. Unfortunately those became the way he dealt with everyone - get to them before they get to you. Ryder is not convinced that everyone is out to get him.. he just doesn’t like feeling vulnerable or exposed. So he makes other people feel that way first. He can be quite nasty. Ryder tends to be indiscriminate in his bullying - though there are always individuals that are easier to get to. He doesn’t mind a fight at times though. Underneath it all, of course, he’s as vulnerable as the rest of them. Possibly even more so. He doesn’t do ‘close’ so his friendships tend to be superficial (if they exist at all). He’s jealous of a lot of his peers’ home lives, although he’ll never admit to it.

Personal History:
Ryder is the second youngest child of Ryan and Alana Balston. Ryan was a professional Quodpot player - he played as a lineman in the state’s reserve team, but only saw a handful of firsts games during his career. He was forced to retire when Ryder was relatively young and promptly began trying to relive his ‘glory days’. Alana didn’t do particularly much until Ryan’s retirement, after which she began to sell magical beauty products. Ryder didn’t have the best childhood. Neither of his parents seemed particularly interested in his - or his sibling’s - upbringing and discipline was inconsistent at best. Ryder had trouble with his older brothers during his childhood - they were rough and seemed to enjoy ganging up on him. He did learn to anticipate their attacks, and if he was quick he could avoid them. As he got a little older he learned that he could antagonise them in his own way - using words they didn’t understand (along with those they did) and being quick with his spells. He didn’t always get away with it though.

Ryder is the only member of his (immediate) family to attend Dresden Academy. His parents tried to get all of them in on scholarships - his father hoping that attending the elite academy would give Jayden (and then Kody) an advantage he had clearly missed out on in the development of his own Quodpot career. Ryder’s acceptance came as a bit of a surprise, given that Ryan didn’t see the same potential in his youngest son. Ryder felt obliged (and may have been forced) to join his house’s Quodpot team. He has mixed feelings on the sport - hating it due to its importance to his family, whilst actually enjoying the playing of it. He definitely doesn’t see it as a career option though.

Due to his parents uselessness, Ryder developed a healthy lack of respect for the adults in his life. This proved a challenge for both him and the staff of the Academy early on. He did eventually learn to keep his disdain concerning certain topics and individuals-with-a-certain-level-of-authority to himself. Though he still manages to get himself into trouble from time to time. He maintains a reasonable lack of respect for his fellow students however - something that gets him into trouble much more often.

Ryder’s family live in the outskirts of Schenectady. They are close by to another segment of the Balston family. Ryder has about as much respect for them as he does his own family. That said, he did spend a lot of time with his cousins in his youth and he does hang out with them when he’s home from school. There’s a small amount of animosity between the two families but it’s practically jovial when compared to the Syracuse-Schenectady family rivalry. Sometimes Ryder wonders if he’s closer to the other parts of his family.. but then the programming kicks in and he remembers how much he hates their entitled guts. As much as he hates his family he will defend them.
