There is an inconspicuous and innocent scar along his lower stomach from where he had his appendix removed. The worst scars however are the tell tale marks on his neck from where a vampire fed on him during his missing months.

supernatural

RACE: Witch.
ABILITIES
INNATE ABILITY: Spencer has the power to manipulate matter, shifting it from the visual world to a separate plane of existence and then back; to anyone witnessing it, his power appears to be teleportation. The majority of the time he uses this power to move himself; once he has shifted into the alternative plane he can cover great distances in seconds, flashing in and out of existence like a blur. Alternatively, he can chose to step back into the real world exactly where he left it. He doesn’t know exactly what the other plane of existence actually is; he has always called it the Void. A screaming blackness of nothing, it takes a little getting used to. Without light or landmarks, he replies on instinct to guide him and the innate knowledge of where the darkness actually touches the real world. During this, he is able to move through solid objects without real hindrance, although if he has never seen the place before, there is always the chance he could return inside a wall or some other fatal accident.

Spencer is able to bring other people with him, so long as they maintain contact. For the most part he tries to ensure the trip takes as short a time as possible and that they are securely connected – a first visit through the void is liable to leave people disorientated, dizzy and even scared. Although it has never happened, Spencer knows that if that contact were to break while they were in the void then the other person would be lost without any sure way of being able to find them once more. It takes a lot out of him to move both himself and another person and prolonged use of his ability can cause him to suffer migraines, weakness and bleeding from the nose; he has always stopped at this point and so doesn’t know how far it would go.

He can also move objects as well, either on his person which drain him depending on the size of the tem and the length of the journey. If he concentrates enough he can even move an item independently of himself. He has to be either touching the item or touching something that connects to it – for example if he was touching a table, he could move a glass on it. There is less direction and ability to control where the item actually ends up in this way, with it being more a rough guess than anything else. He has never tried to move a living being like this.
WITCH: As with all his family, Spencer is able to do all the basic aspects of witchcraft such as create potions and cast spells. He has an excellent working knowledge of all the different properties of herbs and other raw ingredients, from what they can do in their current state to what they can be mixed with to create desired results. Although the Malkin spell book has been lost, thanks to Spencer’s eidetic memory he knows quite a few of the spells within although it could take him a little while to remember every detail of one.

ETHER: Yes. He is cooling and reassuring, solid at first like dependable granite or other stone but push up against him too hard and the more intangible he becomes, like wisps of cloud on a windy day, slipping through your touch but still there, pressing up lightly, calmly against you and around you.
SKILLS: He has a variety of skills, the most important to him being his musical talents, the way in which he earns his money. He is a talented guitar player, singer and song writer; Spencer can also play the keyboard and the saxophone but these are used far more rarely. He has a near eidetic memory when it comes to things he reads or sees. Thus he is capable of glancing at a room and then weeks later telling you if the slightest change has occurred. Spencer is a more than decent cook, tying into his witch skill. He can ride a motorcycle, albeit with a tendency to speed. Spencer’s knowledge as witch, along with his understanding of how the watch works, the way in which the supernatural world hides around them can also come in handy.
LIMITATIONS: Quite simply, his inability to lie comes up as a limitation time and time again; be it having to tell the truth even when he knows the answer will only cause him more pain, hurting someone’s feelings and potentially making an enemy by being honest or even admitting something he doesn’t want to because he has no other answer. Stubborn and loyal, he won’t give up on someone, no matter what. He is mortal and thus subject to all the same weakness and limitations of mortality, including illness and injury. If hurt it will take him the standard amount of time to heal and of course he will age naturally and eventually die. His nightmares are another huge limitation; they come to him on a nearly nightly basis, dreams of shadow and feelings that always wake him in a cold sweat, any concrete memories fading away in the seconds upon waking. Spencer doesn’t like to fall asleep in front of other people because of this, not wanting their pity and embarrassed by the thought of them seeing. He is also something of an insomniac as a result, not wanting to sleep in general, in case he dreams.
WEAPONRY TRAINING: Spencer is not a fighter by any means, preferring instead to reply on the tried and tested method of running away, or using his powers to avoid any confrontation. If he has no other choice, he is able to do some of the more basic hand to hand fighting, but he would be easily overpowered without help.
GROUP: The Watch.

history

FAMILY
FATHER: Ethan Charles.
MOTHER: Paige Charles née Malkin. [Deceased]
SIBLING(S): Azure Malkin. [Younger Sister; Deceased]

● ‘A vote for Ethan Charles is a vote for hope.’ Or so the slogan went. A career politician, everything in his life was carefully planned out far in advance, every choice a cynical one based on how it would make him appear to the public. Until he met the English woman, Paige Malkin.
•	He fell for her hard and fast. It was a whirlwind romance and after only five months he proposed to her, and she accepted.
•	Paige Malkin however had secrets of her own. A witch with a long and proud heritage, she could trace her ancestors and thus her coven all the way back to 1612, when a large group of them were executed. The coven went underground after that, becoming more and more self-sufficient and avoiding humans. Paige struck out her own, a desire to see the world leading her to move to America.
•	It was only another few months after their marriage that Paige announced she was pregnant. Something seemed to shift in their relationship after that, Ethan no longer seeing the woman but merely the mother. He returned to his discreet affairs and although Paige learned of them, she was too proud to say anything.
•	It was to this family that Spencer Charles was born, their eldest child and only son.
•	Ethan’s career moved from strength to strength after the birth of Spencer, the man seeing no shame in cashing in on the appearance of beloved family man. Already reasonably wealthy, the Charles family became rich as Ethan became a senator.
•	One of Spencer’s earliest memories was of his parents wedding anniversary when he was five. Excited by the swell of people in elegant outfits, he watched from the upper floor as Ethan gushed on about his love for Paige, and how the years had gone by so fast. Before he could see much more, his nanny took him to bed. Unable to sleep, Spencer slipped out of his room, intent on finding his parents; wandering through the dimly lit upper floors it wasn’t long before he heard sounds from his parent’s bedroom. Inside was his father – but the woman with him wasn’t not his mother.
•	Even as young as he was, Spencer knew that everything about the scene was wrong. It was wrong for another woman to be there, it was wrong that they were cuddling on his parent’s bed and it was wrong, wrong, and wrong that it was happening on their anniversary.
•	It was the first time he had any indication that his mother and father really weren’t the blissfully happy couple they pretended to be and the knowledge that it was all a lie had a profound impact on Spencer.
•	Not that he knew it was a lie, as he grew older it was easy to see all the little tell tale signs that not everything was perfect. He blamed his father for the failing marriage, and the way in which it made his mother sad.
•	This in turn led to Ethan becoming frustrated at his son and the way in which he always sided with his mother, a vicious circle that made the atmosphere tenser and tenser. Senator Charles stopped bringing his son to social events, claiming that he didn’t want to expose his son to so much publicity; a move that only earned him more praise, the devoted father wanted to protect his son.
•	In reality, he was ashamed of Spencer, of his blunt approach to honesty and the fact he was more his mother’s son than anything else.
•	Spencer was more his mother’s child than his father realised. It was Paige who came across their son the first time he accidentally used his ability and shifted in and out of the real world and it was Paige who carefully explained to her scared son exactly what had happened, that she was a witch and with her blood flowing through him, so was he.
•	With her encouragement and support, Spencer began to explore his powers, using his mother’s presence as an anchor. She also offered to teach him all the details of his heritage, how to be a proper witch.
•	It was his father’s behaviour that convinced Spencer to learn, almost as rebellion against the man. He saw the Malkin spell book, passed from generation to generation and now in possession of his mother.
•	When he was eighteen, his mother fell pregnant once more, resulting in the birth of his little sister, Azure. It was a hard birth and in the end Spencer was forced to use a spell to ease his mother’s pain.
•	Unfortunately, Ethan saw it. Furious at what he first deemed his son’s ‘pagan’ behaviour, he was shocked when Paige came to Spencer’s defence, finally admitting what she was. Ethan, flipped.
•	He blamed her for the marriage in the first place, saying she must have cast a love spell on him to make him marry such an ‘abomination’. He wanted her out of the house and when Spencer refused to abandon his mother, he was told to leave as well.
•	In retaliation, Spencer had his last name changed by deed pole. When Paige left, it was Spencer who helped her, the two smuggling out baby Azure, determined not to leave her to Ethan’s tender mercies.
•	They went underground a little after that, Ethan making frantic efforts to find his family, more out of show than anything else although he wanted his daughter, whom he thought could still be saved.
•	The three of them moved to Baltimore, where they settled in comfortably enough, the years passing quietly, Spencer helping his mother whenever he could, from working to helping teach Azure what she was – neither of them wanted a repeat of Spencer’s first experience with magic.
•	Then the war came. It devastated and changed everything. Somehow all three of them got through it intact.
•	One late evening there was a knock at the door. Before Paige could answer it, it was forced open, a crowd of tall dangerous looking people entering. They had come, they said for the Malkin witches and for the book. Paige screamed at Spencer to take Azure and the book, to run and hide, to protect his sister while she slowed them down.
•	Spencer hesitated for a moment, but the screams of terror from his sister won out and he ran, grabbing her and the book before shifting out of the house and reappearing down the street. They kept on moving, Spencer constantly expecting to see either his mother of the people that had attacked them to be right behind them. For nearly an hour he kept moving and by the time he felt they could stop, he was starting to feel the draining effect of his ability.
•	The two siblings waited as patiently as they could as a few hours slowly slipped by. They knew that Paige would be able to follow the track Spencer had taken, that she would be able to find them, but their mother didn’t appear.
•	Not knowing what else to do, Spencer moved the book into the void, hiding it in the separate plane. Telling Azure that he would be back soon, he set off back to the house, to find their mother.
•	Even with the rest, the shifting between planes was starting to get to him, and by the time he returned to the dark house they lived in, he had both a strong headache and a nose bleed. The whole house was silent as he entered, moving quietly from room to room.
•	Spencer found Paige upstairs in her bedroom, thrown backwards on her bed, her eyes closed as if in sleep. If it wasn’t for the giant hole in her chest where her heart should have been, he might even have believed that.
•	Before he could fully comprehend the sight of his mother, dead in front of him, shapes detached themselves from the shadows around him. The people who had attacked them, who had killed his mother, hadn’t left. Instead, patiently, they had waited for either Spencer or Azure to come back. Again they asked for the book, Spencer defiantly telling them that it was gone and he wasn’t going to get it for them.
•	A cold smile and the promise that he would do just that, and more besides, that someone capable of moving as Spencer was, would be very useful for their cause, was the last thing Spencer remembered before dark enveloped him.
•	When he next came too, he was lying on a hospital bed, a stranger in a doctor’s coat asking him if he remembered his name, if he could say how many fingers he was holding up. To his astonishment, he learnt it was now eighteen months later.
•	The first thing he did was ask about his sister. Unwillingly, the doctors told him that Azure Malkin had been found dead nearly a year ago and buried next to her mother.
•	Slowly, Spencer began to piece bits of his missing time together. He had been found wandering the streets of Baltimore, badly injured, dehydrated, suffering from malnutrition and missing a lot of blood. Subsequent examinations revealed traces of prolonged abuse and torture, even as his flesh healed, hiding the small indications still further.
•	Try as Spencer might, he couldn’t remember anything after finding his mother, couldn’t remember what had happened and could only hope that he hadn’t given them what they wanted.
•	There was no trace of a head injury and the doctors could only assume that his amnesia was because of the mental trauma.
•	As soon as he was well enough to leave, Spencer fled, unable to face the doctors any longer. He shifted into the void, searching for the book but to no avail. There was no way to know if it had simply become lost in the time, or if he had given it up under pressure.
•	The same night he first went back into the void was the same night he had his first nightmare.
•	A confusing mix of sound, smell and feelings, it left his shaken and terrified. Spencer was convinced that the dreams were parts of his lost memories, hints of what had happened.
•	Even though any real memory faded when he woke, the impressions he was left with told him that what had happened was far worse than he could have imagined.
•	One day, while out, he overheard the name ‘Raidan’. It seemed to strike him physically, Spencer recoiling in terror as the nightmares seemed to come at him in the day, while awake.
•	The Raidan. He knew that name, knew that it had been the Raidan that had taken him – even if he didn’t quite know what the Raidan actually was.
•	It was his tentative search to find out what they were that led him to the Watch.
•	The leader of the Baltimore area was a tough, rough and ready man who had a strong distrust of all things ‘magical’. He didn’t approve of witches and told Spencer as much, even as he offered him a place within the Watch.
•	Not knowing what else to do with his life, Spencer accepted.
•	It was hard though, as he was strongly encouraged not to use his magical talents, no matter what.
•	Spencer couldn’t take it for too long, not when he realised the leader’s belief was starting to rub off on him, that he was becoming weary of his own abilities.
•	He made the choice to transfer to another city, picking Las Vegas almost on whim.
•	Spencer doesn’t know what to expect, but all he can do is hope the leader there is more accepting.

extra
