It is said that when two people devote their lives to one another, great things can happen, and that proves true for Magnus and Marcy Decker. Both have never loved another, and both would die for the other. They met on a stormy night in May, running through the rain from opposite directions to duck into a bus shelter, standing there for nearly twenty minutes in the middle of the night, it was kismet. They met, they laughed and the rest is history. Nearly 30 years later they have been married for 28 years and have five beautiful children. It wasn’t long after they met that they were engaged and married, in fact it was less than four months from start to finish. William, the middle child of the five, has always found comfort in his parents’ story. Knowing that when you know, you know and that life isn’t meant to be spent wondering, when you can know. They were young, very young when they were married and being a teen bride and then teen mother, the Decker children have always been aware of young love and its possibilities.
William, known to most as Will, was always a quiet child but very passionate and competitive. He’s always loved sports and at three was in t-ball as well as soccer, though soon t-ball was all he talked about. His father once yelled at him “keep your eye on the ball!” and the very next pop-fly the ball landed on his eye, black for a week and a half. Being raised in a larger family, William was very compassionate and has always worked well with others, and defies all ‘middle child syndrome’ stereotypes. The Deckers are a close bunch and have always been supportive to one another, so when Will took a full ride scholarship straight out of high school, his family cried as he boarded the plane, with posters of congratulations and good luck.
The U of Oregon was far from home and a completely different atmosphere and his thick Texan accent got him noticed every time he opened his mouth. It was a hard choice, leaving his family, leaving her. Olive was his sweetheart the moment she walked through the cafeteria doors her freshman year. Being a sophomore, and a ladies man, it was more than just a shock when he picked her and stuck to it. Dating for the next three years, the two were inseparable. It came as no surprise as she escorted him to prom, and watching him crowned prom king, the surprise came weeks later as his full ride scholarship was accepted and landed him more than just a few miles away. With his departure looming, Olive suggested the two separate and who was he to deny her the freedom she deserved. Not wanting to hold her back and knowing that long distance relationships were hard, he agreed without argue and left a couple weeks later.
Spending all his time training, playing or in school, time home didn’t happen often and when it did he was sure to make himself nearly impossible to find. He couldn’t handle seeing her, smelling her. He missed her every day and torturing himself wasn’t going to help anyone. Opting out of summers at home, he spent his time in summer training camps anywhere but Texas.
Four years later with a degree in advertising, Will was offered contracts on three different teams, two minor league, and one major. Two for less money, one for amazing money. He took the worst possible contract of the three, because it brought him home. Only a few hours away, the new Sugar Land Skeeters shortstop. With three weeks left before the team is scheduled to arrive in Sugar Land, Will has headed home to see some old faces.
