HISTORY: From the way that Amaryllis Isadore Chambers came screaming into the world that chilly October morning in 1957, it was apparent to parents Desmond and Ludivine that their daughter was going to cast quite a presence upon the world. Indeed, their daughter--their only child--instantly became the center of their world, and it was a certain thing that she knew it from day one.
Desmond and Ludivine never had the intention of spoiling Amaryllis, but they did nothing short of fail grandly. Unable to have any more children and wealthy beyond what they could ever wish to spend upon themselves, all of their resources went towards making sure their daughter had all what she needed, and much that she didn't. By the time she was three years old and asking for diamond tennis bracelets for her birthdays, they gave in to the realization that they had created a princess, and decided to go on and let Amaryllis have her fun. Instead of opting to send her to Hogwarts when she turned 11, she asked to be sent off to Beauxbatons Academy of Magic in France, just because she knew her parents had the money to do so.
Amaryllis did not anticipate the difficult time she would have at Beauxbatons. Not only did she have to wrestle through many French language tutors, but she had never been extremely apt at academics, and the competitive nature of the school made it difficult for her to keep up with her peers. Nonetheless, she loved the prestige that was bestowed upon her when she went back home to Ireland among the society she lived in--she was so cultured, and to go to a school in France was so exotic. It was a status symbol for both she and her parents, even if she only graduated with four N.E.W.T.s in all, a far cry from stellar.
Although she returned full able to procure a job for herself, she wasn't interested in working. Her father still had his cushy Ministry job in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes and she loved to spend time with her mother so... why ever leave? Amaryllis' parents weren't about to force their baby to work if she didn't want to, and so began her life as a socialite--partying and shopping and having a good time were all she cared about, living without a care in the world or with any thought to how long this lifestyle would last.
It was while she was in the thick of this stage in her life when Daddy brought home for dinner a very handsome, very charming co-worker by the name of Jude Wickham. Jude was considered a close friend, like a son almost, of her father and it just so happened that after a long dinner and a couple of rather flirty hidden glances across the dinner table that Amaryllis adored him just as much as her father did--but in a slightly different, far more dangerous way.
You see, Jude had a wife.
Still, as with everything else in her life, Amaryllis saw something that she wanted and wasn't about to stop until she got it. As with any good husband, it took her a bit of coaxing to get him to start to recognize and play back with her advances, but he did indeed fall into her grasp. Despite the guilt that she initially felt about pursuing a married man, somewhere in the midst of all of this she came to the realization that she had fallen in love with Jude. What had started out as a sexual attraction and innocent game had become something much deeper, and that terrified her.
Despite assumptions to the contrary, it had never been her aim to take a man away from his wife, and so Amaryllis decided very quickly that the best thing must be to sever their ties. She told him that whatever they had was over, pulled back from the whole situation, and decided to cut her losses--she knew just as well that Jude would not leave his wife for her, and that kind of heartbreak wasn't something she wanted to deal with.
There was only one problem: staying away from Jude Wickham just wasn't in the cards. Two and a half months of being miserable was all she could take before Amaryllis was back at his door and their affair was on again, more intensely than ever.
Amaryllis knew that she needed Jude in her life, but not to what extent until the death of her parents. On holiday in Australia in mid-January of 1977, Desmond and Ludivine were caught in fire that caught in the hotel in which they were staying. Not only was she devastated by the deaths of the two people that she loved and relied upon the most in her life, but soon after Amaryllis found that her parents had next to nothing left of their money to leave to her name. She instantly leaned on Jude for the moral support that she needed, but she had never expected that he would be the source of financial support for her as well. Due to his closeness both to her and her family, and his pity for her situation, Jude offered her a place to stay with him. And his wife.
Things were understandably tense between Belise and Amaryllis from the get-go, but she needed the place to stay and Belise was far too in love with her husband to just give him up to this mistress of his. The two of them managed to live together, tied by a mutual love and need for Jude, for only a few months before he proposed to marry--unofficially--Amaryllis, taking her on as his second wife. To say that she wasn't ready for marriage was an understatement. She was still young and naive, but she knew that she loved Jude and that marrying him would keep her taken care of (at least until he died or unless they had a 'divorce'). Amaryllis thus agreed--happily--and she became the unofficial Mrs. Wickham #2 in the summer of 1977.
In a marriage unrecognized by law, she could not take his name nor is entitled to any of his estate like Belise, and so she finds that she has to make up for her lesser position within the household with what she can. This includes constant sexual displays, quiet teasing, and an obvious flaunting of her youth and beauty in front of her sister wife--Belise bites right back, sowing intense jealousy with her position as the 'public wife' and being the only legally recognized wife. There is feirce competition within the Wickham household because of the two of them each constantly trying to gain the upper hand in the marriage; even in the presence of Jude, the rivalry still rages, albeit in a bit more subdued manner.
No one knows--for complete sure, that is--that Amaryllis is involved in a polygamous relationship. With many of her friends back in France and her family gone, she has no problem getting people to accept the lie that she lives with an aunt and uncle. Many have their suspicions, however, mostly among Jude's friends. There is no fear within the family of being arrested for their behavior--nothing that they are doing is technically illegal--but more for the social scrutiny that such a reveal would put them under. Thus, they must stay under a cover to the best of their abilities, or the Wickhams could risk losing much of what they have.
