Returning Home
Michael Blackwater sat on a motorcycle in the hills of Berkeley overlooking the San Francisco Bay. After years of being away, it was one of the best sights of his life. San Francisco was home long before he went to Arizona for a few years and met his father. Long before he started traveling the world with his mother. He was born in San Francisco and it would always be home.

He shoved the helmet shaped like an eagle's beak, a gift from his father, on his head and started the engine. He revved the engine and kicked it into gear. Dirt flew from under the back tire and he pulled onto the road to race down the hills and across the Bay Bridge to his home.

Frances Barton sat on the steps of the place that the coordinates the file had specified, clacking her boots together idly and enjoying the weather as she waited for Blackwater's arrival. She had opted for civilian clothes to keep this all low key. And to keep the neighbors from spreading rumors, seriously, did they have nothing else to do by spy on people? Finally, she could hear the rumble of a bike coming and she sat up a bit to look a bit more respectable. When the bike came closer, she waved to greet the rider and advert any awkward 'accidentally attacking each other' mishaps.

Mike pulled up in front of the apartment building his mother and he had called home. He hadn't been back in years, but his dad had continued paying the rent until Mike no longer wanted the place.

The bike came to a stop and he eyed the waving woman warily. He removed his helmet and looked at her.

It looked like she found Blackwater, if one looked around the suspicious scowl. But, understandably, he wasn't very forthcoming with a return greeting. "Howdy! Nice design for your helmet, the ones with skulls always seemed ominous," she offered and climbed up to her feet with a quick brush down. "My name's Frances." She stuck her hand out with her best harmless-and-totally-not-suspect smile.

Mike scowled. He didn't like it when he was at a disadvantage. Which was exactly where he was at right now. He took the offered hand and shook it. His mother did teach him manners.

"I'm Michael Blackwater. Can I help you?"

Unless he knew how to wrangle magicians and keep the tech geniuses from making the coffee machine snarky, no. She grinned and shook her head. "Mm, not right now, you just got in to town. Maybe later, once you've settled."

She stepped to the side, out of his way to the building, and walked towards it. "Take a breath, dude, messing with you's the last thing I'd want to do. Some mutual acquaintances of ours said you'd be coming by and to come say hello." Lifting an eyebrow, she nodded to his eagle helm and then smirked.

"What mutual acquaintances?" he asked. He didn't move and didn't follow her toward the building. The helmet was tucked under an arm.

She waved a hand to the clouds. "Oh the eyes in the sky that keep the world spinning and like to meddle in everything. The international neighborhood watch, if you will." With a short bow, she smiled. "I'm with the West Coast division, if you know what I mean. Every time something ugly rears it's head our fair city, it's our job to go and kick it's teeth in."

"West Coast division of what exactly?" he asked. "I think you may have me confused with someone else."

Screw it, other people did subtlety. "The Avengers," she chirped lightly before laughing and gesturing to him. "And if there's another Michael Blackwater riding in with Arizona plates on his bike and specific bird on his helmet, then give me a second as I find my deneuralyzer and you can be on your way." She made a show of patting down her jacket.

"Wait." A pause as his brain caught up. "You're an Avenger and here for me?" He shook his head. "This can't be right."

"I know, I know, offering in civilian gears' rather anti-climatic but I thought being in uniform on a Skycycle'd come off overbearing," she admitted, hands in her pockets. And she wasn't allowed on them after the last time. Details. "But trust me, there will be plenty of pomp and circumstance with the official bits."

"I don't understand why me," he said. "I'm not a hero or even hero material." Okay, so he had inherited some of his dad's abilities, but he wasn't Avenger material.

"Sounds like a good place to start to me," she replied with a shrug. "Why not? You're a Legacy, the potential's there. And as for what's 'hero material', well let's see: we've had spies, aliens, a really obnoxious king... Even a felon or two. You tell me who qualifies."

She wrinkled her nose at that. "Well, yes, his turf was a bit out of the way for the dramas in New York. And the old West Coast team kinda fell through," she admitted with a slight twinge. "But so what? It's not like there's some grandfather clause to joining on. We're here now and so are you."

Mike blinked. An Avenger? This wasn't a joke and she was inviting him to be an Avenger.

What did he do? Did he say yes, or did he say no and continue on with his life?

He was quiet for a few moments.

"I'll do it," he finally answered.

She grinned broadly when he made his decision. Who had HR skills? She did, that's who. Holding her hand out, she offered a card. It wasn't the A-card yet, but it'd do to get him in and started. "Welcome to the team, Blackwater. We're honored to have you on."

Ooh, humor, that was something she could work with. "Pft, come on," she snorted. "You've got superhuman capabilities and apparently enjoy Arizona summers. What could we possibly throw at you?" Her smile was almost believable, almost.

"Yup. Swipe the card to get in. There's rooms for you, you can move in any time. We'll discuss the whole SOs and, ah, visits later, security, you understand. You'll go through training just to see where you are with what." She squinted, looking him over. "Unless you have your own gear, they will make you some. I suggest avoiding Jacobi on that, he has a thing for retro and fringe."

She'd frown, but he did just get into the city. "They'll just want to check it's good for combat then. And good, I was not kidding about the fringe. Oh, there is a paycheck and we've got the best health care ever. Even if they sometimes experiment on us for the hell of it." She shrugged lightly, potayto potahto. "Anything else I forgot?"
