Welcome. Survive. I know the drill.
Esteban was not taking a cab all the way there. These prices were insane, and he'd spent too much getting this far. And occasionally on junk food, which tasted different in America. From the train station, he took a bus to the closest stop and walked the rest of the way to the gates. He rang the bell and waited

A baseball went sailing over the gate. A few seconds later there were running footsteps followed by a voice. "Hey, grab that!"

Esteban hurried over and snatched up the ball.

"So, home run or foul?" he called over.

Misha appeared at the gate and peered through the bars. "It's a home run, but I'm telling that brat he fouled. Damn kid keeps trying to hit one of the upper floor windows. You expected today?"

"Heh. Specific one, or just feeling vandalous? I hope I am; I assumed my family would call ahead. Esteban Richter."

"Oh yeah, it's a specific one. He can't punch her in the arm to show that he likes her, so he's trying to break her bedroom window." Misha went to the gate control box to open it. "Nice to meet you. Misha Loganovich. They told me to keep an eye out for an arrival, but I was listening for a vehicle to pull up."

"Heh, sorry about that, but no way was I shelling out that kind of money. Chinga, how do you people afford anything up here?"

Once the gate was open, Esteban offered the ball with his left hand and a handshake with his right.

Misha shook his hand with practiced ease. "Well, some students call ahead and let us know they need a ride, or they're air dropped over the pool. We also arrange regular rides into the village if the kids want to go in after the classes." He didn't comment on how people afforded anything. He wasn't in a position to gripe about finances.

He looked around outside the gate. "Where are your bags?"

"Air drop. I gotta try that sometime." At the question. Esteban pointed to the small knapsack on his back. "That's all. Handed down the rest of my clothes to cousins before I left. So, um, Misha, your dad still works here, right?"

"Are you kidding? He still thinks this place would collapse if he wasn't here to keep an eye on things." Misha gestured for him to come inside the gates before he closed them. "You gave away your clothes? This isn't a monastery, honest. Not that it wouldn't make the professor happy if it meant the kids would all calm down. You get to have stuff. Some kids arrive with their entire bedrooms packed."

Esteban laughs as he comes in. "Chinga, I'd make a terrible monk. But the littles will get plenty use out of them, and it was less to carry. Well, definitely looking forward to meeting and getting my ass kicked by your dad. My uncles say it's very educational. Well, one says he's heard it's educational. The other says it's a privilege -- but not a real rare privilege."

Misha laughed at that as he started up the long drive. "Dad might crack a smile when he hears that. He teaches the advanced hand-to-hand classes for kids who want and need to learn how not to rely on their abilities. Some even go in wearing an inhibitor collar to get the most out of it. The rare privilege is when he'll take you on learning with katanas."

"Wow, yeah, that must be awesome. You do swordwork?" Esteban follows him.
"No need for an inhibitor collar here. I got a perfect lid on it. You wouldn't think I was a mutant at all."

"It's an option for students that show an aptitude. It was required for me." He tossed the ball and caught it as he walked. "It's good to be able to pass out in public. I do all right. Your dad brought you here years ago, right? Seismic powers?"

"He's my uncle," Esteban corrected technically, "but he did the dad job. It's related. Electro-magnetic field bursts. What about you?"

"Uncle, dad, they're practically the same thing," Misha said, smoothing over his bad memory for such things. He could probably be forgiven his slip when he had all the aunts and uncles a kid could take growing up.

"I got the healing factor with muscle memory. Close to Dad's, but it's got a twist that makes life interesting. Makes training extra special. With your uncles, I can see you won't be in the beginner classes with me. You'll go right to the advanced ones."

Esteban nodded at the obvious honest mistake, then looked impressed. "Yeah, but I'd still love a workout with you sometime, man. Chinga, you've got to be versatile."

"I'll keep that in mind. I'm a knife guy myself, but I'm not going to make a crutch out of them." He surveys the big, stately house as they come up to go in it. It's huge. "Manage to scare many people off with just how big the place is?"

"Some, from off the streets. The rest are related in one way or another." Misha tried to see it through his eyes but it just wouldn't seem like anything other than home. Even knowing how many levels there were underground, and the tunnels, and the caverns beneath the property. It was still the only real home he had.

"Think of it this way - if it was any smaller, we'd be blowing it up from the inside instead of from the outside. I think the professor is part Morman and is making plans for everyone to come back when Armageddon arrives."

"Not so much the not wanting to come as the not wanting to leave Guadalajara. I have a difference of opinion with Mom and Uncle Julio and Uncle Star as to whether this was the best time for me to be leaving town. But in the end, they get to call the shots."

"No matter how old we get, they still pull that on us," Misha commiserated. "In the meantime, plenty to do. We have a couple of teams other than the adult ones. We stay active and try to help out where we can."

"All part of the friendly service." Misha climbed the steps to the front door. "I'm getting so good at this greeting gig that I'm putting it on my resume. Right after Ladies' Man and before Beer Taster. You need anything or have any questions, just let me know."

"Way worse things to have on a business card. However, I do have one question." He grinned. "I like baseball, but without enough time for television, I don't know enough about the New York Baseball scene the way I do the fut -- 'soccer' scene in Guadalajara. I assume the whole Mets-Yankees thing is kind of like the Goats-Atlas thing back home...."

"I don't know about the Goats-Atlas thing, but here the Mets rule and the Yankees drool. Which I have remind my sister of when she waves her Stark box in my season ticket's face."

Esteban laughs. "And that gives me exactly the impression I was looking for, thanks. And you have my sympathies. A Goats fan could easily go mad dealing with an Atlas fan's skewed view of the universe, but I've never had to deal with one in the immediate family."

Misha laughed with him. It was an easy subject to laugh about. His love of baseball and his family. Both hot topics he refused to let get to him.

"Well, as immediate as it gets with her four hours away. I try and pull rank, but she ignores me. The season tickets keep coming, though. Every year for the last sixteen years."

He grins. "They'd like that. Well, Uncle Star would like that. Uncle Julio might hide behind the couch saying "No, no, I lived past 25; that means I don't have to do this anymore."

Misha /laughed/ at that. He paused inside the front hall and leaned against a table. "He wouldn't be the first to say it, either. I've heard a lot about Shatterstar, though. Dad has a lot of respect for him as a fighter. I've gone through some old training videos to learn his method."

"Great. I bet as techniques go, it's a lot prettier with a healing factor, come to think of it." Esteban sheepishly displayed the back of his left hand, criss-crossed with scars. "Not that I'm whining about aesthetics. Chicks dig it. I presume. At some point."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"I wouldn't know. I don't scar for more than a couple of weeks for near death fights. Dad warned me against trying that trick of stabbing through me to get to the bad guy behind. If I have to do it, he'd rather I shoot instead. Honestly, I'd rather not do either. A healing factor is cool, but you heal too fast for a painkiller to work."

Esteban winced. "Ooh, yeah, that's gotta suck. And I love him, but no sane person does that trick. Worries Uncle Julio sick. Uncle Star's a huge fan of your dad's, though, which you probably know."
