If there was one time of the day that Bert Bartok was not fond of, it was teacher meetings. And lately, there had been a plethora of those, all of which Bert was required to go to. Today, though, he had feigned "sick," and he had scheduled a student meeting for his Piano Literature class that was working on a humongous project so that he could approve ideas. Most of this humongous project consisted of Bert making his students do rather ridiculous things for him, such as go on an impossible scavenger hunt throughout Allegro. Hey, it was fun for him, right?

Bert had promised, though, that after this student meeting was over, he would go to the teacher meeting or see the department head afterward. Since the department head was boring and bound to talk to him for hours and hours and hours, Bert... didn't plan on following through. Ever. Not if he could help it, at least.

So there Bert Bartok was, dodging through the halls of Allegro, tiptoeing past the department head's office and sliding stealthily into the teacher's lounge. He breathed a sigh of relief as he shut the door behind him.

Alma looked up from the cup of tea she was brewing next to the microwave on the counter, and, upon seeing Bert, turned away again, a little bit snide. She couldn't help it really. It wasn't that she didn't like Bert, it was just that he was so...so...something. And she wasn't used to it. And she didn't like it.

"We missed you at the department meeting," she said airily, toying with the string of her teabag. "I take it you've made a wonderful recovery from your...what was it you were sick from this time?"

He made a surprised little noise when she spoke, not really expecting anyone to be in here. He shouldn't be surprised, really, but in the hype of it all, he was.

When Bert realized who it was in here, however, he grinned to himself. "Almie!" he greeted her. "I was bitten by a massive gorilla and couldn't make it in. Why do you ask?"

His answer caught her off guard and Alma laughed, although thankfully it was hidden with her back to him. She composed herself quickly although a smile was still struggling to show by the time she turned around. "Really. A gorilla. I wasn't informed they were indigenous to the area."

"They're not!" he insisted brightly, walking over to the sink to fill his paper cup with water. "One escaped from the zoo, Almie, and it was going to eat my face, I swear to God. And do you know what I thought?" Bert pushed the buttons on the microwave to a minute and 30 seconds, sticking his paper cup in it to make tea.

"What did you think, Bert?" Alma asked, with the faint tone of someone speaking to a very small child. As she asked, she quickly opened the microwave up again and snatched Bert's paper cup out, unceremoniously dumping the water and throwing the cup, only to spend the next few seconds finding Bert a clean mug and filling that with more tap water and replacing it in the microwave. "Don't microwave paper," she lectured lightly. "You'll kill yourself."

"I will not kill myself. What's the worst that could happen?" he commented. Bert didn't think anything of it as he turned on the microwave and continued. He turned to her and snatched her hand before she could protest. "I thought that you'd never be able to see my wonderful face again if that gorilla ate it."

She gave him a rather reluctantly amused little face, before gracefully taking her hand back. "Oh what a loss to the world," Alma said dryly, taking a sip of her tea only to find it still too bitter. "I don't know what I would do, Bert."

"You'd miss me," he insisted. "You don't know it now, but you'd totally miss me. Especially if my face was all eaten by a gorilla." Bert watched the tea in the microwave. "Is it true that if you stand too close to a microwave, you could die?"

"Yes," Alma answered automatically. It was a little silly for her to know all this, but she couldn't help it. It was left over knowledge from all the baby books she'd read when -- well. "You're very chipper today, aren't you," Alma noted, her smile widening against her will.

"I guess," he said offhandedly, distracted as he pulled his hot water out of the microwave. "Didn't have to sit through a four-hour meeting, did I?" Bert turns briefly to throw her a quick smile. "Sent the kids on a scavenger hunt."

"Bert!" Alma exclaimed, half scandalized. "What does that have to do with music in the slightest? And are you sure you wouldn't rather be teaching kindergarten somewhere? What are they learning on a scavenger hunt?" Alma herself teaches a very traditional class, with essays and tests and lectures.

"It has a lot to do with music! In fact, you're part of the scavenger hunt, Almie! You'll see." Bert grinned wryly.

"My lips are sealed," he said, locking his lips together with his fingers and throwing out the imaginary key.

She frowned at him. "Fine, keep your secrets," Alma sniffed, turning back to her tea.

"Don't mind if I do," Bert said with a smile, sipping on his tea to check on the flavor. Not enough seeping yet. "So, how was the tell-tale meeting, Almie? Learn anything new?"

"Oh now you're interested?" Alma asked, a little bit haughty. "Actually, I missed half of it on the phone with my..." A look of exasperation and mild disgust passes briefly over her face. "...husband."

Miserably, Alma hoped.

"Miserably, I hope." The words were out before she could stop them, and somehow, she felt better for saying it. "We were fighting."

He frowned. "'Bout what? Do I need to punch him in the face?"
