People: Faeries
Tiny and fickle, faeries look like miniature humans. They can be up to a foot tall in faerie form, but are usually no larger than that. They have the ability to shift size and often walk around as normal size humans; this is called mage form. When in mage form their wings do not appear. When they are hurt or tired they shift back to miniature, most faeries cannot hold mage form for more than a few hours. They are prized as friends but are often enough treated like belongings and so do not trust humans. Their dust has inherent magical properties. Faeries are notoriously allergic to iron; a little known fact is that they are also allergic to caffeine (which when ingested acts like a slow-moving poison and can become addictive like a drug). They do not attend school unless they want to and most pretend that they are normal mages for as long as they can.

Faeries do not typically have familiars, since familiars are allergic to faerie dust.

At some point in a faerie's life (and sometimes for the exceptional or special half- or part-faerie) they will be given a special, secret fae name. This name is powerfully magic for the faerie, though it can be used to control a faerie if it falls into the wrong hands. The use of a fae name remains a strongly guarded secret among the faerie population.

Half-faeries (and part-faeries, quarter on down to fey-touched) are a little different than regular faeries; they tend to have some combination of abilities, usually more one than the other. Some half faeries can maintain mage form longer, perhaps because they are part mage. Some have almost no fae traits at all. It varies with every birth. The fae traits tend to thin the further down the family line the blood is passed.

In Aylasia faeries typically only shed faerie dust in their sleep, and only in faerie form. Fae do not shed dust when they are in mage form (which is why half-faeries do not shed often, though when they do it's a ridiculous amount). A bit of faerie dust usually clings to their skin, no matter how much they scrub.

Within the group of fae there are other subsets with their own abilities. Pixies and Clurichauns (grown-up versions of Leprechauns) for example are able to maintain mage form far better than regular faeries.

Clurichauns are known to be good with wine stock and liquor in general.

Fey-touched is another group which are considered more like mages unless the fey nature is drawn out of them, they are regular mages who have faerie blood somewhere back in their family line. They are just as rare as half faeries. The fae abilities can be called out with a special magic working called a changeover. There is no going back once a mage (or regular human for that matter) has completed the changeover. They are full fae from that point forward.

Faeries magic abilities are listed here.
