Characters: Quentin family, open to the Quentins!
Setting: Memaw and grandpa Quentin's house in Atlanta, Georgia
Rating: NSFW, most likely violence and cussin'
Summary: A typical Thanksgiving at the Quentin mansion

Dani hated the holidays. They spent the morning getting pies ready at their own home and then headed over to Grandpa and Memaw Quentin's home in Atlanta where they spent the rest of the day listening to memaw berate the democratic party and the policies of that new crack pot Sato at the school. She loathed, absolutely loathed, hanging out with her cousin all day and being picked at by her grandmother. It was like they enjoyed watching her squirm.

"Danielle, can you get the pumpkin pie?" Markus asked as he loaded his arms with warm pots for the Thanksgiving dinner. Dani rolled her eyes but grabbed the two pies off the counter anyways and brought them to the car. Micah and Nicole were already sitting in the car, both of them sitting at a window. She sighed loudly and plunked herself down on Micah's lap until he got the right idea.

"Come on Dani!" he complained as he scooted over.

"I aint climbin' over ya! Get over it!" she said squishing him further into the middle. "I'm apparently the only one with arms anymore," she shoved one of the pies at him and then whistled loudly. Second later Laddy came bounding out the door with Markus and hopped right into the car, snuggling at Dani's feet.

"I can not believe you're bringing him. You know grandmother Quentin disapproves," Nicole said as Markus got into the car.

"Fuck off," Dani grumbled. "I don't give a shit what anyone says about Laddy. He's a good boy."

"Danielle, watch your mouth," Markus said, having said that same line at least thirteen times already. There was no bite to it, nothing threatening at all.

Dani rolled her eyes. "Yes papa," she spent the rest of the ride making faces at her sister when Nicole wasn't paying attention. Reaching the Quentin mansion where Markus and his brother grew up, all three children unloaded from the car with their parents. Noah and Jonathan were already there, their cars in the driveway. Dani smiled, knowing that at the very least Jaden would be late, a small act of defiance against their family. It had always been their subtle way of telling the rest of the family to fuck off for years. She was glad that someone carried on with tradition.

Laddy skipped along right beside her, his tongue lolling, as she walked to the front door. She was promptly stopped before entering by an old hand, sticking out from a sickly thin body. Dani quirked an eyebrow. "I have something for your... Laddy," Grandmother Quentin said.

"Nah memaw, he already had a late lunch, he don't need no treats," Dani said, trying to avoid where ever the rest of the conversation was going.

Grandmother rose one delicate eyebrow very slowly and then shook her head. "That was not what I was going to give him," she held out a tiny, white and black sweater, barely touching it, as if it were diseased.

"What the fuck is that?" Dani asked. "Aint gonna... ah. Ah hell no memaw. Laddy aint no sweater wearin' p..."

"Danielle!" Markus said coming up behind his daughter. "What is this? Oh! A sweater for Laddy. How nice."
"This is stupid dad," Dani said pointing at the sweater. "Wicked stupid. What in the hell is this even going to accomplish?!"

"It's festive," Grandmother said stiffly. Her tone of voice was suggesting anything but festive but Dani knew she didn't have much clout.

"He don't wanna wear it," Dani grumbled. Laddy sat by her feet patiently and looked up at her.

"That mongrel is not coming into the house without at least a sweater," she said, shoving the sweater at Dani one last time. "Now accept Laddy's gift so we can all move on."

Dani looked at her deadpan but took the sweater. "Fuckin stupid sweater bullshit," she said putting it over his head and situating it. "She prolly fuckin' made the damn stupid thing all on her own. Sat in a fuckin' old bitch knittin' circle and knitted every ounce of malice into the damn stitches..."

"Danielle... I'm still right here," Grandmother said, obviously less than impressed.

"To tell you the truth memaw, I don't give a fuck. Oh," she put her hand over her mouth in mock shock. "Should I put on a festive sweater or is that still gonna offend you?"

There were really two things on Alex's mind on Thanksgiving day; avoid any family Quodpot matches as much as possible, and make Dani look bad as much as possible. She was still quite pissed over the trip to Sato they had both taken together, and everytime that their grandmother brought him up, she made sure to nod along with every criticism. Even if he did let them off a bit easy, he was still a chump. If anything, that just proved it. Girls like Dani needed to be locked up with the key thrown away.

Keeping up the facade of the sweet and innocent granddaughter wasn't even tiring at this point. She had been fooling her grandparents and most of the family with the sweet as sugar, and just a bit spoiled, act for years. When her cousin and her family arrived at the door, Alex didn't even get up straight away. She had arrived with her parents and brother an hour ago, and she had been taking tea with their grandmother in the parlor, until Dani showed up and the commotion began. How typical.

Sighing as she stood, Alex took a moment to straighten herself out, running her hands down the front of her outfit and mussing with her hair for just a second. Heading out into the foyer where Dani and memaw were coming head to head about Laddy, Alex made her appearance, coming up behind memaw's shoulder.

"Danielle, that is a terrible thing to say to nan-nan! Our beautiful family matriarch.. how could you?" the other girl spluttered, looking her best sort of shocked and offended. "I told you she was out of control," she added to memaw in a mock whisper.

Dani looked up and acted surprised, putting her hand over her chest. "Oh shit memaw! I didn't know the devil was comin' to town!!" she snickered to herself and finished putting the sweater on Laddy. She was sure he hated it but he did look particularly handsome even if it was a stupid sweater.

"I'm perfectly barbaric," Dani sneered at her cousin. "At least I don't try to hide it with some stupid suck-up act," she obligingly scratched behind Laddy's ears.

"Danielle," Markus looked at his daughter, almost pleadingly.

She rolled her eyes and sighed dramatically. "Well aint this just a wonderful way to start the day," she turned back to the car where Micah was still unloading the food. "Micah! Get the quod! I aint got the patience for tea today!"

"No one here is acting except you acting out," Alex replied coolly, arms crossing over her chest as she watched Dani finish putting the sweater on her dog. It really didn't improve the wretched thing any, it was still hideous and perfectly barbaric just like it's owner.

When Markus spoke up, Alex immediately moved around her grandmother and over to him, standing on her tip-toes and making a show of kissing his cheek. "Happy Thanksgiving, uncle Markus!" she said, sickly sweet.

She just barely, however, contained her glare when Dani asked for the quod to be brought up. That sneaky little bitch. "Ladies enjoy tea, Danielle. That's what we do."

"Bull fuckin' shit," Dani laughed. "You deserve a god damn Oscar."

Grandmother Quentin gasped and Dani smirked. "Trust me Memaw, she should be in the drama club er somethin', this whole sweet act she has goin' on got all y'all confused 'bout her."

Dani scoffed at Alex's mock sweetness toward her father and the way he fell for it every time. "Danielle, why don't you enjoy some tea with your cousin and grandmother?" he suggested, hoping that her cousin would have had a bigger influence on her by now.

"Fuck no! Why don't you put on a pretty little hat and sit in there with them fools! I aint drinkin' no tea with that wench," Dani said pointing at Alex.

"Nan-nan, she has no idea what she's talking about," Alex shot back, turning away from her uncle and back to her grandmother. She knew that memaw rarely believed Dani over her, but she couldn't risk it. She knew the way to act, how play the victim and deny, deny, deny. "She's so mean to me all of the time," she lamented with a soft sigh, eying her cousin as she said it.

"I don't think Dani even likes me, uncle Markus.. I mean, after she practically beat me up and all," she went on, after Dani blatantly turned down the invite to tea. She was quite glad the other girl wouldn't be joining them, but she knew that once her dad heard her cousins playing Quodpot, she'd be ushered out of the parlor and onto the field instead.

When Dani pointed at her, Alex let out a gasp, lifting a hand to her chest as if wounded. "Just because you don't know how to behave like a proper young lady doesn't mean you should treat me so cruelly, Danielle! You're so cruel sometimes.."

Grandmother Quentin sighed as Dani went on her tirade about Alex. "Danielle, enough. You've got to stop blaming your shortcomings on those more well mannered than yourself," she said cuttingly to Dani. She turned on her son. "And you Markus, you let your daughter sulk there and talk like that?" she rose an artfully crafted eyebrow and folded her arms across her chest.

"Aint blamin' none of my shortcomin's on that piece a..."

"Dani!" Markus barked. "We're sorry mother. Woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning," he smiled at his mother and smacked Dani in the back of the head. "You really need to think before you speak Danielle, you're hurting your cousin's feelings," he looked at the other girl sympathetically. "Danielle was promptly punished for that digression at school Alex," he reassured her. "She knows that it was unacceptable to attack you..."

"Bitch fought back! Like a fuckin' banshee too! Fuckin' she-devil with her..."

"Grandmother Quentin!" Jada said coming up from behind. She threw her arms around her mother-in-law, hating every second of it, but pasting on that fake smile like it was the last thing keeping her on earth. "It's so good to see you! You're looking well," she knew very well that she was interrupting another fight. She hoped, very much, to divert.

Grandmother Quentin wasn't fooled but she took the bait regardless. "Jada, so glad to see the whole crowd could make it... well Jaden..." she had never liked their middle child, he was always causing trouble or making a fool of himself.

"He'll be along any minute," Jada said dismissively, waving her hand. "What's on the agenda for today?"

"Tea first. Then that barbaric game quodpot. The boys insist," she said as if they word itself left a sour taste in her mouth. "Dinner afterwards and the traditional ladies parlor time after dinner," she explained, finally leading them through to the sitting room where they had all been sitting.

Dani sighed and grumbled, but a little elbow to her side reminded her that this was not the time. She followed quietly even if her skin was crawling.

"It's okay uncle Markus," Alex sighed softly, shaking her head. "You can only work with what you're given," she added, eying her cousin skeptically as she spoke. She opened her mouth to go on, but when her aunt interrupted, she quieted down and just watched the scene with her arms crossed.

"We really should get back to tea," she suggested at the first opportunity, hoping to perhaps avoid Quodpot all together if they got sidetracked enough. But as they entered the sitting room, before she had a chance to usher everyone into their seats, her father was jumping up out of his own.

"Markus!" he bellowed, crossing quickly to gather his brother into a mixture of a handshake and a one armed clap on the back. Regarding Alex just standing there, and seeing the quod nearby, Dimitrius broke out into a grin. "Pumpkin, be a dear and go and get changed! We've got to show your uncle here how Quentins really play," he suggested. He was not really a fan of tea himself.

Barely keeping herself from gritting her teeth, Alex forced her best smile. "Sure, daddy.. I'd love to."

Dani slumped grumpily through the house, trying to show how clearly displeased she was with the whole thing. Tea with her mewmaw and her cousin was the bane of her existence, it was like listening to nails on chalkboard while sitting in wet clothes with pins on her chair and something sharp and pointy constantly prodding her.

"Dimitrius!" Markus said just as warmly, giving his brother same bro-clap as always. "I'm sure you and Alex are exceptional players," Markus grinned

Dani looked at her cousin, absolutely gloating and flashed a big toothy grin. "Uncle Dimitrius, maybe you should come to the games for the rest of the season so we can show off to you old farts," she said loud enough for Alex to hear. Sometimes she just couldn't help herself when an opportunity presented itself.

The boys were already running down the hall and out the back door to the expansive yard.

"Don't tear up the grass!" Grandmother Quentin hollered over the ruckus of all the boys jostling down the hallway.
