adelaide: peaceful
Who: Adelaide Legaux and a whole bunch of NPCs
When: The second-last and last days of school, June 2010
Where: Outside of Oak Hall, in the between-class rush, and later her dorm room
What: Adelaide's world is crashing to pieces.
Rating: Self-indulgent.

After belting Abernathy in the head with an exploding quod and not getting the satisfaction of a fight out of it, Adelaide had sought out her boyfriend to bear the brunt of her rage. He'd been evasive for weeks, making excuses not to see her and when he couldn't avoid her attentions, he was distracted, and dismissive of her. She'd always been patient regarding his mood swings, but she was convinced he was cheating on her with her with AB. Why else would they be having coffee dates on days he was 'too busy' to spend time with her? It's not like they were friends. They had no classes or extracurriculars together. That evil bitch had obviously stepped up her game and decided that the best way to punish Adelaide for existing was to steal her boyfriend. That kind of fuckery could be expected of a piece of work like Abernathy Ford. But for Andre to stoop so low? That was an insult she would not abide.

She eventually caught him in the commons outside Oak Hall. It had taken her two days of having her emails and owls ignored before she finally managed to get a hold of him completely by accident during the rush between classes. He refused to come with her for a private conversation, so she started tearing into him there and then, in front of everybody.

Which only made what happened a hundred times worse.

They'd always been rather passionate bickerers. Namecalling was par for the course, and there were times they would come to blows during the course of their arguments whether or not anybody else was watching. But this altercation... this one was by far the worst they had ever had. He didn't call her any names. He didn't lay a hand on her. But this time, he managed to hurt her so completely and deeply that he may as well have actually killed her.

There in the commons, in front of everybody, he told her that he didn't love her. That it had nothing to do with Abernathy, actually, and that he'd been avoiding her because he knew she'd be a hysterical woman about it. That he found her touch repulsive, that having sex with her was both physically and mentally unsatisfying because he was so unattracted to her. That the whole passed year had been a massive waste of his time and effort for such a let-down of a payout.

To say that she had been stunned was an understatement, but even still, the worst was yet to come. In this very public place, in front of all these people (who of course, had stopped to watch the unfolding drama with perverted curiosity) he went on to announce that actually, he'd rather taken a fancy to one of their classmates... a boy. And not just any boy, no, it had to be the most horrid boy in the entire school, a bitchy, queeny little asshole who had always taken such delight in torturing her for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

There had been much more to the scene of course, but it was too much for her to process. Following that particularly distasteful revelation, it was all she could do not to pass out there and then, heartbroken and humiliated. She didn't remember how she had responded, if she had at all, or anything else that had been said.

She didn't even know how she had gotten back to her room. She should have been in class, of course, but there was nothing in the world that could induce her to go back out there and face her classmates. Instead, she drew the curtains and tidied her room and boxed up her things.

Hours later, when that had been done, she sat at her desk in the dark, alone with her thoughts. There was an obvious course of action, but she wasn't sure she could manage it. She'd never been particularly brave or decisive, and the one solution to her problems that kept presenting itself required her to be both brave and decisive. Or at least committed to the outcome. She thought on it the entire night.

The next morning brought no comfort, but it did provide her with some sense of fresh clarity of thought about the situation, and her mind was made up. She summoned an owl, and gave it instructions to deliver some letters for her. They were nothing romantic or detailed; just a note to her brother to tell him the she wished they hadn't lost the years between his leaving and their reunion just two months earlier, and one that even the owl seemed surprised to see: a very short and unpoetic apology... to Abernathy Ford.

She felt just the smallest amount lighter after having shooed the owl out the window. As she closed it, she could hear the sounds of celebration outside as her fellow seniors enjoyed the last day of their enforced schooling, with graduation later that same afternoon. A cynical part of her liked to think that they were cheering her on, urging her to go ahead with her plans to end it all.

Far be it from her to want to let down the team, she picked up her wand and locked the door. The few extra seconds it would take someone to break it down might make the difference between failure, and blessed, eternal sleep.
