Hawthorne moseyed into Professor Morse's office with as much swagger as he could muster given the situation. He was getting his wand back today, but it would come with conditions.

Morse had him by the balls, but he was certain the professor would never indicate as much.

Thorn took his seat across from the professor and waited while Morse fiddled with some papers and a locked drawer in his desk.

"You understand Hawthorne, the seriousness of having your wand taken away?"

He nodded solemnly. He hated the latter half of the summer, cut off from most of his magical abilities. He never wanted to experience that again, but he didn't know if he had the ability to prevent another stupid mistake that would land him in the same position.

Morse held the envelope containing Hawthorne's wand. It seemed such a flimsy thing for such a personal object, but the envelope was protected by serious spells that would prevent anyone but Hawthorne from retrieving his wand. "I have been given the responsibility of ensuring that you use this appropriately and properly during your studies here. I need you to understand that I am trusting you with my reputation as an educator and mentor by accepting this duty."

"No pressure or anything," Hawthorne replied, his complexion going a bit white around the edges.

Morse shook his head slowly, reassuringly. "No pressure, Hawthorne. I have high expectations for you. I need you to exceed them and I fully expect that you will. You have talent, what you need is vigilance and awareness." He paused for a moment and considered what might be the best motivator for this troubled youth. "You are perfectly capable of becoming a responsible magic user and a productive individual. It's my goal to get you on that path this semester. Potions is second to all of that."

Hawthorne took a long breath in, thinking on Morse's thoughtful words. He didn't believe half of them, but it was nice that someone else did. For once in his life someone else believed in him.

"You can do this. You will do this." Morse passed the envelope across the desk and offered Thorn an almost fatherly smile. "Take the rest of today to prepare yourself. Tomorrow you're a university student and my teaching assistant."

Thorn nodded again, the weight of the wand in his hand. He couldn't open the envelope in front of Morse. He couldn't say why at the time, but it was a private ritual he needed to execute on his own. "Tomorrow," he affirmed as he got up for the door. "I'll be ready."

"You will," Morse echoed ominously and allowed himself a hopeful smile as the door clicked shut behind his new charge.
