Hawthorne spent much of his vacation cultivating an impressive migraine. It was the result of thought, introspection, and poor morale.

He'd texted his various ladies (as a result of them texting him first) and decided he'd need to have deep, serious conversations with them. He was in over his head, so much so that he was turning to his best friend for help. The problem with turning to his best friend being that it was Luka; that boy was in no mood to help someone else sort out their love life.

There was always the option of hashing it out with Abby, but wasn't that messy too? Possibly messier than he could handle. Sadly he was better off plodding through this on his own.

Carly had given him the option of coming to her in his own time. Cinna demanded conversation and ice cream. So it was that he showed up on Cinna's doorstep with a tub of ice cream he wouldn't eat; he was not as prepared as he might have liked.

Cinna was a little bit of a mess. Since the fight at the party, she'd convinced herself that Thorn liked Carly better than her and that 'do you want to talk' translated to 'goodbye forever because you're not my number one girl anymore' because Thorn never wanted to talk, ever. She had spent the last few days moping around the house and eating everything in sight before finally giving in and texting him.

She was in such a state that she didn't even dress up to see him. She answered the door barefoot (a major difference from her usual heels) and in a t-shirt and sweats. Her bushy hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail and she didn't have any makeup on, and when she saw him she grabbed for the ice cream, hugged it to her chest, and led him inside to the living room.

He had no idea how to respond to the sight before him. He'd never seen Cinna less than perfectly made up. He wondered, stupidly, if it had anything to do with him. "You... So... Hey." Every thought turned into a dead end and he followed her without any more words to the living room.

"Hey," she sniffled, climbing onto the couch with the ice cream and curling herself around it to pull off the lid. "Your face looks sore." She couldn't remember if she'd done that to him or not.

"It is," he replied, plopping down an uncomfortably comfortable distance from her. It was easy when it wasn't about their relationship which was tanking in a very serious way, and mostly because of him. "You look... Have you slept since the party?"

"Not real well," she admitted, and then scrunched up her face because she must look pretty terrible to make him ask. "Been feeling pretty crappy." She made a noise of disgust when she realized she didn't bring a spoon for the ice cream with her, and launched up off the couch to run into the kitchen and come back with two. She put one into Thorn's hand, and settled back down a little closer to him, digging into the cold bucket with the other spoon.

He took the spoon gingerly and made an attempt at a half-assed bite. One of the side-effects of having his face clawed off was that his cheek hurt when he tried to eat. The ice cream was a little cold, actually kind of pleasant. "Me too," he agreed. He sat quietly, thoughtfully spooning at the ice cream now that he decided it was the best thing he'd tried to eat since the party.

Cinna nodded in commiseration and took a big spoonful to melt in her mouth and swallow down while she thought about what to say to him. It didn't come, so she took another spoonful, and then another. "Why'd you rescue her instead of me?" She finally asked quietly, afraid of the answer.

It seemed like the least bad idea at the time. He wasn't going to tell her that Carly was lighter and easier to move around. "I dunno. She was already all up in my business. Seemed easiest to turn around and just push her out of it." Besides the fact that you're a total wild cat.

"Do you like her more than me?" She'd asked him over text and he hadn't actually answered, which she considered a very bad sign. She shoved another spoon of ice cream in her mouth in anticipation of him confirming this assumption. Her self-esteem had taken quite the hit in the few days since the catfight.

How do I say this without getting myself killed? "It's way more complicated than that, Cin. You're like... the fliest fucking chick I know. Fucking, awesomest girl I know. And yeah, Carly and I have history and she's like... shoved up my dick or some shit, but I dunno. She doesn't make it easy to get rid of her, and I would, I have, but she wouldn't listen. So that makes us real complicated." That was probably the clearest he'd been able to articulate his feelings since he started thinking about it.

Cinna pulled another face as she sucked the last of the ice cream off her spoon. "She's such a bitch, Thorn. She's always up on my ass about some shit because of you and she's so mean and she's mean to Abby too!" She didn't care that she was whining. How did Thorn not know what a completely awful terrible person she was? "She's just the worst! Why can't you like any girl except her?"

Thorn shrugged his shoulders. He didn't know why he liked Carly. Maybe, he reasoned, she's like a punishment because I don't deserve better. That was a heady thought. "I think it's probably just better if I don't date anyone for awhile. I watched this show the other day where this guy said I have to love myself before I love anybody else and I guess that's true. I'm kind of a fuck up, Cin. I don't know why anyone likes me, to be honest. I mean, it was fine and I thought it was cool for a long time, but I'm just tired of always fucking everything up. I guess I have to figure out who I am and how I can be better before I can expect anyone to love me."

"I already liked you," she huffed. "And I was cool with you fucking up and doing stupid things and screwing around." And then somewhere along the line things just got confusing and fucked up, and she wasn't even one hundred percent sure that it was Thorn's fault at all. "Just 'cause you're not perfect doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you."

"And I really appreciate that, Cin. That's why you're my fucking favorite." But he needed time for himself, to be himself. It was possibly the most mature conclusion he'd ever come to. "I just gotta do school and get my fucking head on straight. And I dunno, Cin. I'm just thinking, I mean, you can wait for me to get my shit back together, but I don't think you should because you're just too awesome and I don't want to be the reason you're not happy."

She thought this was an awfully round about way to say that he just wanted to rock out all over the place and not have to worry with dealing with a cranky girlfriend over it but it was probably as close to actually saying it as he would probably ever get. "'kay," she sniffled, digging down towards the bottom of the ice cream tub. "You do your shit, I'll do mine."

He wanted to hug her, but that seemed entirely against break-up etiquette. "I should probs peace out then," he said quietly. "I just... Shit, Cinnabun." I love you. He stopped it before it could find its way out; damnably counter-intuitive to break up with someone you loved. It was classic Hawthorne. "Take care, right?"

"Yeah, yeah. I always take care. I'm the take-careiest person you know, jackass." She eyed off the last of the ice cream, but set it down on the coffee table instead of shoveling it into her mouth. She wiped the condensation off her hands onto her pants and kneeled on the couch to grab his head in a hug. "You take care. Come find me if you need to talk, or shit like that. We're cool."
