When/Where: Friday, March 9th. Prof. Morse's office.
Rating: SFW

Thorn was sitting in Morse's office yet again. It wasn't for any particular offense or concern. Rosenthal had spoken with Morse about Thorn's progress as an art TA, which was turning out to be a surprisingly good arrangement. This was mostly just to check in with Thorn, to see where he felt he was at.

His work in potions had progressed to the point that he could possibly TA for advanced if he continued his studies over the summer. Morse had an idea brewing in the back of his head, one he was certain wouldn't get much support for from the Hulett oligarchy. For this particular troubled youth he was willing to put his own money into the pot.

"How have you been, Hawthorne?"

He took his seat and nodded in answer. "I've been better," he answered once he'd thought about it. His current scuffle with the ladies was a distracting concern.

"I wanted to inform you that Professor Rosenthal is quite pleased with your work as his teaching assistant this semester." Morse figured good news was always favorable for this particular student. "I believe he would take you on again for the fall semester, but I've another arrangement in mind."

Thorn didn't quite know what to make of this and leaned forward in interest. "I've really liked working with him," he said quietly, nervous that this peculiar situation was about to get even stranger.

Morse could have laughed, but Thorn really wasn't ready to handle that reaction. "I've been very impressed with your worth ethic this semester, Hawthorne. You've improved and learned beyond my expectations for you this year. Despite our occasional concerns with your behavior you've done quite well."

"I've been trying," Thorn interjected, waiting for the other shoe to drop. "I mean, I know I'm no angel, but I've been watching my mouth since..." He trailed off because there was no need to bring any of that up again.

"With a bit more study I think you would be perfectly capable of assisting in my advanced classes. To that end I propose that you stay on this summer to study over the break. I'm sure your parents would amenable to this plan. We could fit in very focused study over a few days a week so your weekends are free to travel as you like and enjoy some of your summer."

Thorn sat in thunderstruck silence. This was an interesting development and perhaps a bit early in the semester to be discussing it.

"Of course, there are some administrative hoops to jump through and concerns about whether or not you'd be able to stay on campus during the week or if you'd have to travel each day." Templeton had mentioned it to Jillian Hulett who seemed a bit dubious. Her sister was somewhat more amenable to the idea, but she didn't have the pull he needed for this venture. He would try Dawkins next, play up the idea that this was for Hawthorne's welfare (which it was, but Dawkin's was more likely to press it with Hulett if Morse milked it). "Mind you, if you're not interested then the idea is moot."

Thorn was quiet for a long time. It was a lot to think about, changing up his summer routine of bumming around the house and getting yelled at by his father and then kicked out of his mom's apartment. Going to Luka's until Uncle Dmitri physically removed him from the house. His parents would jump at this opportunity. He thought it pretty fucking awesome that Morse brought this offer to him first; it gave him the time to think about it without any of the pressure.

"So I'd come and study a few days a week, get up to speed, and TA for you in the fall?"

"If you wanted to," Morse stressed. "I imagine we can continue our current arrangement as is, but I think your talent at potions would improve considerably if you assisted me. You'd be in the potions lab more and applying your lessons in new ways." Hawthorne had an artistic talent for potions that Morse rarely saw; he wanted to cultivate that ability and help the young man find a passion for it.

"When do you need to know?"

"As soon as you've decided," Morse replied generously. "Though the sooner I know the better I can prepare and negotiate."

Hawthorne would have to give it some thought, but he made up his mind to give it no more than two days. If he couldn't decide by then he would answer yes by default. It wasn't as if he had any good plans for summer anyway.
