Hermione Granger floated through the door to BLABS with a small but excited smile. With a crack, Dobby appeared next to her with an envelope in his hand. She floated up to the counter and smiled sweetly at Michael. "Hello, Michael," Hermione said brightly. "MacGonnagall's written me a letter to take a look at some books, if that's all right."

A little brown hand pushed an envelope across the counter and left a list written on parchment on Hermione's side. "Thank you, Dobby. You may go back to the castle now," Hermione said.

"Yes, Miss Granger. Dobby will go back, but Miss Granger should calls to Dobby is Miss Granger needs anything," the elf said and disappeared again.

"Sorry about that. He likes being my hands," she said, trying to excuse her use of an elf.

Michael was on circulation duty today. It was one of the more boring tasks at the library, but unavoidable.

"Oh, hi, Hermione," Michael responded, taking up the envelope. "How have you been? Is this your first time at BLABS?"

"Yes. I've never really had an excuse to come previously. I've been well, but I hear you're doing better. Congratulations," she said. After a second, she explained, "I was at the Burrow when Molly and Hannah were arguing if your color was a milk chocolate brown or a dark chocolate brown."

Michael smiled and rotated his engagement ring with his thumb as he opened the envelope. "Oh, thanks. And that's a good question. I don't think we chose one. I'll have to ask Iden tonight."

He read over the letter. It was a pretty standard reference letter asking the library to permit Hermione access to its collection and listed a variety of texts that she would need.

"Alright," he said, pulling a form out from the desk drawer and jotting some details down. "So, the letter didn't specify what it is that you're researching. I need to know for the paperwork."

"Er," Hermione said, glancing sideways awkwardly. "I'm actually researching crossing over..."

It felt odd to say it. One didn't usually research ways to end themselves, but one wasn't usually dead.

"I see," Michael said, thinking about what to put down on the research line of the form. "Let's say, 'Crossing over and the permanency of spirits', it's properly academic sounding so my boss won't ask questions."

He filled out a few more lines, attached the reference letter, and said, "Alright, Hermione, you're all set. Will you need any assistance finding what you're looking for?"

Hermione looked at her list. There were only a dozen books on it, but that should be enough to take up a week or so. When one doesn't sleep, so much more researching can be done. "Well, is it voice-activated? I mean, I've never been here so I don't know where I'm looking."

"Well, a book in the general collection can be summoned by voice if no one else is using it. If the book is in a special collection, then I'll have to get it for you. If you need assistance turning pages, I can charm the individual items to respond to voice commands," he said.

He looked around a bit at the large reading tables around the circulation area. It was a slow day. "Some of the regulars have favored reading stations. I suggest you claim one of the tables on the right there." He pointed out the free tables.

Hermione nodded, began to turn and then remembered her list on the counter. "Er, would you mind bringing my list to the table?" she asked rather sheepishly. Being a ghost didn't exactly feed her fierce independence. In fact, she often felt incredibly stupid having to ask people to do the most menial things for her. It was one of the many reasons that this whole thing needed to be over.

Michael took the list and followed Hermione to a table. He laid the list down where it would be easy to read but out of the way.

"Between work and Iden and wedding planning, I haven't seen many of our schoolmates in recent months. Do you hear much from anyone?"
