Heavy steps approach from down the hallway, and Varon enters, arms laden with takeout boxes. "Good day to you, Cait Curry! I have brought the ritual comfort food and my sparkling companionship." He grins earnestly at her. He'd been tapped by the other Titans (read: Riley) to mind the tower for them during missions while they were a girl down, and keep an eye on their injured.
Cait smiled. "Hello Varon. Thank you. It's very thoughtful of you."
"Think nothing of it. Mighty Varon is honored to be a part of the recuperation of a fellow champion of justice." He sets down the boxes, opening up a pizza with just about every animal fit for sale in that state as a topping.
"In addition to your city's finest pizza offerings, I also come bearing Chinese food, and sushi.
"Oh my gods. Pizza. It's only my favorite surface food. Thank you so much Varon."
"Do not undersell it, oceanic nymph!" He intones seriously. "It is the finest foodstuff on your entire primitive planet! That you have come up with such a decadent cuisine is a credit to your race." He gets them each a pair of slices on paper plates.
"I was informed by one of your comrades that only flatware that can be disposed of along with any leftovers is acceptable for 'sick days'."
Cait looked at him a little confused by the last part. "Huh?"
He blinks.
"No cleanup." He holds a paper plate in one hand and points to the garbage.
"Oh," she said. "Why didn't you just say that?"
He starts in on his pizza, seeming confused.
"It is... simply my way."
"It's kind of confusing to the rest of us," she said.
"I apologize. I have been working on mimicking a more... colloquial manner of speaking, for my mild-mannered secret identity."
"It's okay. Thank you for the pizza. It means a lot."
"You are most welcome. I understand part of the recuperative process also involves watching movies either with large numbers of explosions, or ones where women are treated badly before finding true love?"
"We can watch any type of movie," she said. "There are not requirements to healing."
"Very well. What do you recommend?" He peruses the shelf of dvds.
"It doesn't really matter to me, but the Lord of the Rings movies are quite good."
"Ah, yes! I heave heard of these films! My friend Avia spoke most highly of them." He finds the first one and puts it in, before returning to his seat at her bedside, and his pizza.
"Ty and I like to watch them," she said. "I'll watch just about anything. I haven't seen many movies."
"Neither have I. I have been most focused on trying different kinds of food since I visited your planet, although I have viewed much of your historical and news programs on the internet."
"Sometimes it's a lot to take in," she said. "I'm still learning a lot of new things."
"Undoubtedly. Although my home is much more advanced, we are a relatively small population. One city-state stands against the brutal and savage yeti pirates of Kashkavon, the glorious beacon that is Tynol.
By comparison, your planet is staggeringly diverse."
"The surface is," Cait said. "I'm from Atlantis. There are only two cities in Atlantis. There are more cities that were once part of Atlantis, but they aren't any longer."
"Are they... no more, or simply not as closely affiliated?"
"They're more or less their own kingdoms now. They went a long time not being a part of Atlantis."
"I see... hopefully they are not in opposition to your family's rule?" He helps himself to more pizza, opening up the Chinese containers as well.
"We have diplomatic relations established with them, but they still govern themselves." |
