Try as she might, Jillian Hulett couldn't convince any of her staff to retire. She also couldn't see any way to cut down on the educational programs, at least not yet. She wanted to keep everything that made Dresden unique. She could make the budget work for another year, but they'd suffer deep cuts in the following year to make up for it.

Most of the decisions she'd made up until this point had been tiny. Cutting a bit of spending by using old text books, requesting that the kitchens cut back on extravagant meals and focus on simple foods that were cheaper to make (and relied more heavily on produce from St. George's Farm); this was her arsenal until it became apparent that something else needed to be cut.

She started looking to the extracurriculars. The event's committee didn't need such a large budget for a few dances. She cut their budget by a third. The dance and drama troupes didn't need such extravagant costumes or sets; she cut their budgets enough that Brennan Weeks almost threw the complete Shakespeare at Jillian's head.

Her attention turned to Quidditch and Quodpot. The sports were staples at Dresden and wildly popular, but they became a money sink; quodpot in particular. Parents rarely came to games and when they did they always grumbled about paying to get in. Having 5 coaches on salary seemed a bit ridiculous and having to outfit 5 teams with new equipment every year took a toll.

Jillian had met with each of the coaches over the summer to ascertain the best course of action. What she was left with was possibly the most difficult decision to make. How could she cut a program that always raised the morale of the student population, but was a tremendous loss to the bottom line?

She had a bit more time to make this decision. Quodpot season didn't officially begin until October, even though the students began practices the very first day they were back. Even so, she could wait until mid-semester to make the decision to cut their teams down to one or two. They could use last year's equipment and they had always been good about supplying their own brooms. A half season would give any seniors one last chance to play on their home teams and allow the other students a chance to adjust to the idea (because Jillian had a feeling it would be the most reviled decision she would ever make).

For now she could leave it be, but soon enough Dresden would have to face some shakeups.
