| From Russia With Dinner |

Occasionally, Matt truly did miss being able to see. Though his enhanced senses had compensated him for the loss of his sight in many ways, there were things that they simply could not replace. The inability to check his appearance in a mirror being one of them. He'd gotten quite good at coordinating his clothing, and he kept his hair simple enough so as not to worry, but he was allowed some measure of self-consciousness. When he'd told Karen and Foggy about his encounter with the Russian woman at the coffee house, Foggy had not been surprised at all, chalking it up to the Murdock luck he'd come to recognize. Karen, though, Karen had seemed rather jealous... But Matt decidedly wanted to know more about this woman. Something about her... was rather curious. Perhaps just his imagination, but after the crazy days he'd had lately, it was probably worth following up on. And if it wasn't, then he got a nice dinner and a nice evening out of it. Fair enough trade.

Natasha had been looking forward to dinner with Mr. Murdock. He intrigued her, not in a spy sense, but as a man. There was something about him that she couldn't put her finger on and Natasha loved a good mystery. She dressed simply for the evening. A small black dress, heels and a shoulder wrap to ward off the chill in the night air. Most thought the air cold, but Natasha had grown up in Russia. It wasn't even jacket weather yet. She walked into the restaurant and looked for him. picword: Black Dress - Photo |

Matt detected her heartbeat and made a concentrated effort not to look up from where he was waiting. Just a regular blind man waiting for his dinner date.

"It's good to see you," Natasha said. The waiter pulled out a chair for Natasha and she sat down. "Thank you," she said to him. "I'm sorry I'm late. It was murder trying to get a cab and there was traffic." picword: Over the shoulder look - Comic |

"Quite all right," he said. "The default state of New York City is gridlock, or so I'm told. Never did get to taking that road test."

Natasha chuckled. "A person is insane to drive in this city. I don't know how people do it. Though navigating the subway can be just as bad." picword: Listening - sunlight - photo |

Matt tended to avoid the subway whenever possible. The noises, the smells, the sheer press of people, it all made it difficult for him to function and played merry hell with his radar sense. It wasn't always possible, of course. "I usually take a taxi or the bus when I can," he admitted. "But I do consider myself lucky to live in a city with a fairly well developed public transportation system."

"Mostly representing people they've turned over the police," Matt said. "Including a few costumed criminals. These vigilantes are a murky, grey area, but there's also ample evidence again the accused, so right now, it's usually pleas to lesser chargers. But there's some talk about suits against these so-called "super-heroes."

Matt was, of course, well aware of his own, shall he say, conflict on interest in the matter. But even criminals were entitled to a defense under the law. It didn't have to be him, of course. But helping to arrange plea bargains did sometimes pay the bills, and it helped to be on the inside track to how the state of New York was reacting to super-heroes like him. "I'm generally tempted to agree," he said. "And there's some Samaritan laws that generally agree with it, but it's a complicated legal issue."

"Not a lot coming out of the rest of the world yet," Matt said. "I don't think most countries are too ready to talk about it much. But from what little news is leaking out, it seems like China and Russia are clamping down on theirs fairly harshly, along with a few other nations. Canada and the UK seem to be adopting more of a wait and see approach."

He nodded. "No major legal precedents being set for this country, at least," Matt said. "Not yet, anyway. After that big bruhaha a couple of weeks back, I'm wondering if the law won't be inclined to be a little kinder towards them." picword: Worried/Hesitant |
