Allegiance and why: to herself and her girls, to her friends; she is a revolutionary at heart but also a businesswoman who won't pass up a good opportunity when she sees it.

Social Status and/or Occupation: daughter of the Earl of Ravensdale; circumstances have led her to now be the Madam of Isabel's House (a very reputable and expensive brothel); passionately supports defenseless women, and has strong convictions about inequality and isn't afraid to say it

Brief physical description of your character: She stands about 5.8, long wavy red hair, thin but with an hourglass figure; dresses very fashionably but won't back away from dressing down either; fancies men's clothing at times, or when the setting suits or requires it; she is witty, charming and very intelligent. Beautiful yes but an equally captivating personality keeps people flocking.

Brief description of your characters history, including family: Technically she is Lady Constance as her father, Lord Oswald Mosley (51), is the 3rd Earl of Ravensdale. For many years he served as High Sheriff of Staffordshire. Her mother, Lady Margaret (nee Innes) (44) is second cousin to the Duke of Roxburgh and can trace her lineage back to James II of Scotland. She has younger brother, Lord Nicholas (23), Viscount Rolleston, who represents several constituencies in the House of Lords and making quite the name for himself in politics.

Basically, she's the spare to the heir. Once her brother was born, Constance was left to her own devices, though she was trained to use her natural assets and abilities to achieve a financially beneficial marriage for her father, or the family. At 16 she got into trouble, got pregnant courtesy of a friend of her brothers, a handsome but vain and bullyish Marquess and friends of friends got her to the Madam Isabel Thwaite who helped take care of her. This ill-advised transgression led to the crossroads of her life and instead of becoming a nun or settling for a man she doesn't really want (which is what her father probably would have wanted), she chooses the life of a courtesan with Isabel's help as Isabel was once one of the most famous courtesan's of the time before going into private business. Connie was so grateful that she became a patron of sorts to the house as she works her way up fromlourette to courtesan quickly, rising through the ranks to consort with some of the leading notables of her day, and when Isabel dies, she takes over, renaming the house in her honour.

Constance does what she does because she likes it, likes the freedom she has over other women of the time. She sees it as a brilliant business opportunity and has a great business mind. She thinks one persons money is as good as the others, providing a place for those girls who don't desire marriage but don't see harm in making good money inside and behind closed doors. She treats her girls well and is kind to them, but takes no nonsense from clients. Constance and her girls are free to come and go as they please, are wined and dined by all manner of men in the city, get to have sex without retribution and most of all are allowed to become educated. After all, one must know a lot about the world in order to converse with worldly men. Constance takes the girls under her wing but does not pressure them. Some deal with the wealthier men of society but must follow the unwritten set rules for such things; others are quite happy to make smaller money but with far less restrictions and not be beholden to merely a few men.

Constance also works as a back alley abortionist for prostitutes and girls of all rank, and helps deal with illegitimate babies, taking care of them and finding them good homes so no shame should come to the lady.
Though kind and generous, she does have a mean streak to her and quite the temper that stereotypically comes with her red hair. And she's not afraid to take revenge on those who wrong her. Constance has purchased a majority of the Marquess' outstanding notes, and has the man right where he wants him, in his debt and scared to death of being financially and socially ruined.

Game Stuff
One or two plots which you would like to play out in the community: maybe she spurned Slater at one time or stole some business but didn't skitter away like a dainty female, or when the old Madam died, he thought he could horn in on the girls and here comes little miss upstart and takes it right from under him :) Or maybe she's nice and generous to the boys and if they run errands for her, she pays them VERY well *G* And then there's Harry, who she sees much the same as Slater only a bit more refined if not as equally dangerous. Maybe doesn't dislike him as much as she professes but he does make her blood boil, and not entirely in a good way; it's a brothel for goodness sake, trouble is always around

* Courtesans often chose their lovers, out of jealousy and rivalry with other women of their social class. They took bourgeois lovers who were already married as a form of social climbing. There was no chance that these women would ever have to resort to walking the streets

* While domestic violence against courtesans and lorettes probably occurred during that time, courtesans were sheltered enough that they were not very vulnerable to attacks by random men like the brothel workers were

* Courtesans and lorettes were immune from the law. Since they were not visible to the majority of society, police turned a blind eye to their lifestyle choices

Sex was used as a way of gaining power and prestige. Courtesans were usually highly educated and well versed in the etiquette of the time but they were also independent and able to express themselves as no other women could. She decided what lovers to take and she decided what was acceptable for her to do or say. The more genteel women of the time did not have this luxury. It seems as though selling one's body is a small price to pay for the amount of freedom that was allowed to courtesans. Even though the bourgeoisie women had prestige based solely upon class distinctions they did not have any amount of freedom to live as they wished. Even women with more open-minded husbands or fathers were not able to act as they wished simply because society demanded certain things of women. This was not so for the courtesan who, in choosing her profession, had already rejected society's constraints and was thus able to live in an open and free manner.
