Name: Carlisle Camden Crouch Age: 36 House: Hufflepuff. Is that a problem?
History: The first of three children, Carlisle Camden was "raised," in the Pureblood way, primarily by his mother, Charis. While Charis meant well, she had not been taught how to handle children, and often handed Carlisle off to a nanny while she drifted about the house, arranging flowers and preparing tea parties. As much as Carlisle likes to deny the fact that he was hardly brought up by his parents at all had any impact on his psyche, it still shows in his general disdain towards his father and family members in general. Without much sense of family, Carlisle didn't have much sense of obligation; Crouch family reunions were easy enough to coast through, but as soon as he set foot in the Black household, Carlisle was being told to straighten his posture, speak clearly, and "for Merlin's sake at least try not to use that awful accent. It's so... southern." Carlisle, of course, had picked up his pedestrian accent from the perfectly pedestrian people he was left with for most of the days, and didn't make much an effort to change it.
Things changed after Charis died. No one ever explained to Carlisle what happened, and to his day he hasn't bothered to really ask. Though he was sad in an obligated sort of way when Charis died -- she was a really pretty woman, and well-meaning -- more immediately noticeable was the sudden halt in nitpicking from her side of the family. Thus liberated, Carlisle felt more than free to ask the Sorting Hat to place him into the House he wanted (Hufflepuff -- they seemed the least uptight), start smoking and drinking at a young age, and date well outside of his social circle.
After graduation, Carlisle went into Hitwizard training, and managed to make a full seven years in the profession before his first partner -- a good guy, Dawlish or something -- died. It was rare that Hitwizards died on the job (or at least, rare relative to the Auror field), which was probably why both Carlisle had been lulled into some false sense of security about the entire thing and allowed a small and stupid mistake to... well, to kill his partner. Carlisle resigned the day of Dawlish's funeral, "resigned" here meaning "stormed out angrily, cursing up a storm and refusing to sign any sort of official paperwork." He lived off the fortune for a while, toying with the idea of taking a wife just for the formidable dowry that would inevitably be attached.
Instead, Carlisle decided to do what he did best: whatever he wanted to. He began designing brooms for the Cleansweep line, and, in the recent past, has designed several new broom models hailed as revolutionary. He plans on eventually branching off into his own company, and, in his free time, sketches designs for a broom that seems impossible, called a Nimbus.
Personality: Carlisle is a very hands-off sort of person. The few things he has any real passion for -- namely, alcohol and broomsticks -- he dedicates himself to with all of that Hufflepuff spirit, but when it comes to things he has little interest in, Carlisle doesn't bother with trying. This principle applies to his family as much as anything. To Carlisle, family is something of an obligation, and one he doesn't really take seriously. Though he goes to most family reunions, he prefers to sit in the corner doodling or partaking of the inevitably excellent wine. Carlisle doesn't understand social hangups, and hardly finds himself any more worthy than anyone else -- Black, Muggleborn, Yaxley, Weasley, whatever. It's all rather the same to him. Carlisle is also something of a recluse. It's not out of any conscious decision; he simply doesn't take to people in the way that others do. He's a shade too introspective, and far too self-sufficient for his own good. His mother predicted, before he died, that he would never get married -- at the time it was meant to be a light-hearted jibe, but Carlisle is growing increasingly certain that she was entirely right. What's more, he has no desire to get married, or to keep a pet for company, or anything like that. Carlisle spends most of his days working on brooms or reading or playing Quidditch with charmed Quaffles. That said, Carlisle doesn't mind people, and occasionally goes out of his way to talk to them, but he rarely expects anything in return -- much less a friendship.
Reputation: Son of Caspar and Charis Crouch. After Charis died and Caspar became a wispy, forlorn speck of a man, the entire family felt called upon to pity the three children Charis had left behind. Carlisle being one of those children, he learned from a young age that he could get away with all sorts of things his fellow Pureblooded youths could not, and thus became one of the few tolerated delinquents in the extended Black family. He smokes, drinks, and curses in a horrendously pedestrian accent, and despite the fact that he should have long since settled down and had children, Carlisle insists on being single. Still, he's fine enough to be around when he's not actively breaking the law; he has a charming tendency to call all family women "mum," and keeps to himself enough that he isn't too much of a nuisance.
Details: Eventually goes on to design the Nimbus broomstick line, which he's currently working on. Disgustingly good flier. Owns seven brooms (he favors a modified Cleansweep). Dislikes his cousins; prefers to spend family reunions teaching the younger family members how to fly. When all else fails, he drinks. Has a Birmingham accent, but has quite a head for mimicry. Played Chaser for the Hufflepuff team for six years, four of which saw Hufflepuff the Cup. |
