For heroes_meta. I actually put some effort into it this episode. (ETA: And this was the 100th use of my Heroes tag! So do I get a prize or what?)
We open on Hiro getting stoned. He still hasn't given up on his thing against going back in time, the reason for which I have mostly forgotten, and so Usutu is feeding him what I recall to be the mashed defecation of a hyena. And this turns him into a flying cardboard cut-out and makes him go back in goddamn time. As per the recorded properties of mashed hyena poop.
Crazy inna-eye cut to that one party in Six Months Ago that took ten thousand hours to play out, except that this time it's been retconned to include Linderman and Arthur. Which means that my groaning is unfounded: instead of drunken!Heidi shaking her thang, we get ominous plotting, at least once the pair of them get tired of telling each other things they already know for the sake of the audience catching up.
Also? Candidate for best line: "I'd shave my wrists. Handcuffs chafe." BURN, NATHAN. \o/
Also also, I love that the age-old tradition of Petrellis bumping each other off apparently goes back so far.
I cheered when Thompson came back to kick some ass. Actually, and on the topic of dead characters in flashback, I saw that this was a flashback ep and wondered if Adam would get a look-in. But alas, this was not to be. Dammit.
I actually feel more meta-ish about this episode than I did about the previous one, which is possibly a good sign, but when the camera cut to Gabriel fingering a noose he'd just tied I just went "...oh god." in the most exasperated voice you can imagine. Clearly, something is wrong here.
No, wait, I did have one thought about it: why a noose? I mean, you'd have to learn how to tie it (it doesn't exactly look like the knot is intuit-- ahaha oh yeah), and do measurements to work out the right length, and after all that it's one of the most painful ways to die that I can think of off the top of my head. (Well, one of the most painful ways he could reasonably manage. I'm not counting stuff like 'eaten alive by piranhas' or 'hit on by Chainsaw' in this.) Why didn't he just go out and buy a bottle of sleeping pills? Oh, wait, because Elle zapping a plastic bottle out of his hand wouldn't look nearly as dramatic. Carry on.
And snap-cut, briefly, to the globe and the title. The title is in red, just in case we didn't realise that it's eeevil.
It strikes me that Elle is being terribly caring and helpful for a psychopathic kid. It worries me that I'm more inclined to put this in the mental folder marked "lazy writing" than in the one marked "plot point".
"Forgive me!" "Look at you, Elle, just showing up out of nowhere... like an angel..." Oh god, this reads like one of those fanfics. You know the ones. The ones where the characters are nothing more than their lines from past episodes, repeated with slight variations. I think this is the third episode in regards to which I've referenced those fanfics, and it's causing me pain.
Although -- and this made me giggle my head off -- Gabriel in this scene started to talk in that fakey Texan accent he used back in Season 1, back when he was running around menacing Sandra Bennet. Hold on a minute while I fanwank something out of that. We all know that Gabriel is a massive faker (yes he is, shut up season 3), and I theorize that all of his confidence is bound up in his Sylar persona, and obviously after being saved from suicide he's going to be trying to take ahold of himself -- so what better to do than try to immerse himself in that new sense of confidence and self-worth, despite the murderous baggage? He doesn't know that Elle has a power here, so she's in no danger from this early Sylar who still doesn't kill the "innocent". So he's attempting to steel himself, and turning to Sylar for the strength he needs to do that: not in an MPD way, but in the sense of his own self-image. And having a different voice is a really effective way of reminding yourself that you're a new man. And that's why Sylar is Texan, y'all.
Haha, HRG knows way too much about whales. It's like Claire and her manatees, though to be fair that was for a school project. Even so, the Bennets clearly have a marine-life obsession.
...?! Wait wait WAIT. Elle I can see rolling with this, but HRG KNEW ABOUT SYLAR waaaay back then? WHAT. I can only guess that he knows about the "power transference" but not about the whole killing thing yet.
Also, *snork*. I am choosing to believe that "transferring power from one person to another" is just HRG's take on Sylar's intuitive aptitude, because otherwise I'd probably go storm the palaces of NBC or something. Either that or Sylar is now like Superman and has multiple original powers for whenever the plot demands them, which judging by the writers' past performance this season really wouldn't surprise me at all.
"You look good in a suit, Nathan." Aaaand apparently Petrelli-killing isn't the only tradition that goes way back. xD
I can't help but feel that a big black van running him off the road is a sloppy way for Arthur to assassinate Nathan. Though, yeah, I get that he has to distance himself from this so as not to arouse suspicion.
Speaking of arousing things: jeez. Nathan, Peter, stop making eyes at each other and just kiss already. :/
I am shocked and amazed by how human Angela is being in this episode. She's less of the ice-queen, more the mourning woman who stole socks for attention, though even less icy than that.
Bahaha, Arthur and his abruptly guilty conscience; he fails so entirely at pretending to be innocent. I have a feeling their conversation would've happened no matter what Angela had said. "Nightcap?" "I DIDN'T KILL MY SON!" "...pardon?" "WHAT ARE YOU SUGGESTING?! I'M A PETRELLI, WE DON'T MURDER CLOSE FAMILY MEMBERS!" "...okay." "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE ACCUSING ME OF THIS. WE ARE NOT HAVING THIS CONVERSATION!"
Dual reaction to the training mission: "Dude, Thompson did fieldwork?" and "Yeah, Meredith enjoys burning people waaay too much."
Sylar being under surveillance is far, far too amusing to me.
"Hi, do you like pie?" HAHA Elle with her pie = Eden with her slow-killing macaroni cheese, y/y? And when did Elle get his address? "Hi, don't kill yourself, here's my watch, and by the way could I pop over sometime and feed you?" xD Oh man, like he needs another mother figure in his life, even one who's faking it.
Hah, Sylar. Everyone in the past fails at subtle. And I don't mean just kinda fails, I mean FAILS. "Oh, you brought me pie! Guess that's my cue to monologue at you, now with 100% more cryptic warning!" Haha oh god.
"An invisible man tackled me in the alley!" OMG, CLAUDE SHOUT-OUT. He needs to come back and beat up all the characters with teaching sticks.
Hah, Gabriel, you stole one power and suddenly you're talking about it being an addiction. Also, you're being terribly forthcoming to this girl, wut. I can totally see him latching onto her like a gangly bespectacled limpet, but would he really come out and start monologuing his thoughts and secrets at her like that? (And it keeps coming into my head that if Elle was someone's ofc, everyone would be shouting Mary-Sue. And what happened to her being this horribly damaged shut-in?)
Hey, folks, we have another candidate for Best Line of the Episode, courtesy of HRG the Whale Man: "Special just the way you are? I was afraid you were going to burst into song."
Oh, okay, so HRG does know about the killing, and is in fact encouraging it with this gleeful little half-grin on his face. What. I'm laughing now, because he totally just lost his right to complain at all when Sylar goes after Claire. At all. xD
Utusu: "Don't wake him." Ando: "Why?" Utusu: "Same reason you don't wake sleep-walkers. He'll think you're his alarm clock and he'll hit you."
If Hiro keeps falling down asleep like that he's going to have a massive bruise. Right over the one from the spade, probably.
Oh dude, and now Meredith is competing for best line as well: "They're tricking you because you're dumb. You remember what dad used to say? God gave you a big sister instead of a brain."
And Thompson, too, though his "yes, I killed her" really depends on the use of his awesome "sigh; durr" deadpan.
I don't get why Flint didn't go all flame-on at Thompson when he had the clear shot right there.
Oh-- jeez, Linderman, shut up with the pot-pies. You are not allowed to reference the pot pies. Remember what I said about lame fanfic-style shout-outs?
So... Arthur was doing to Angela pretty much exactly what HRG was doing to Sandra. :/
You could cut the irony with a knife: Meredith's "they killed my baby girl" while she and Thompson were walking past Claire's firey train THAT MEREDITH SET ON FIRE haha oh god I just got that. Epic linkage there, dudes. \o/ Okay, I did love this bit, mainly because I'm a huge fan of things fitting together like a puzzle. Especially because there wasn't any Big Conspiracy behind it -- it was just an event that caused another event, linking two storylines (albeit a long time after the fact), and giving the sense of an actual interacting world. I'm a sucker for that stuff.
Though I giggle. I giggle, because this episode would make no sense at all without having seen the first season.
Go right ahead, Elle, just randomly invite some dude around to Gabriel's apartment. Don't ask him or tell him beforehand or anything.
I am suddenly terribly afraid. If this Trevor person has cryokinesis then I am SO JOSSED.
...WOAH. Okay, blowing stuff up? That is an ability of awesome.
HAHAHA, just what horrible poison did she put in the soup? GO ANGELA.
*snork* Elle is dashing around dropping the word "special" every five seconds like it's some kind of foreplay.
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT
I love how HRG fails entirely at running to save his partner from certain telekinetic death. I could've sworn he was dashing out to save the day, but then we cut back and he's watching Sylar do a murder like he wishes he had popcorn.
OKAY PEOPLE. THIS HAS GONE ON LONG ENOUGH. Just what exactly is the deal with Gabriel's glasses? Sure, they're a neat visual symbol of Gabriel vs Sylar and also incidentally are adorkable, but just what on earth does he wear them for? I thought at first they must be for the detail when watchmaking, but no, he wears them outside of a work setting, when eating dinner or contemplating suicide or holding a friendly conversation. So are they prescription? Then where do they go when he's Sylar? Is the braaainsface in fact a short-sighted squint? Or did he get contacts? When he's running from the FBI and the Company, does he pause every morning to sterilize and pop in a pair of daily disposables? What happens if he gets the eye-care solutions mixed up in his hurry not to get tasered? When he's going in for the kill, does he ever have to stop and search the floor because one of them has fallen out? Does he carry a pair of dorky thick-rimmed prescription glasses around in a nondescript case in the pocket of his badass trench, in case he suddenly has an attack of doubt and needs to dress as Gabriel to visit his mother? TELL US. IT'S DRIVING US CRAZY.
"It's not your mother's recipe." A thousand points to Angela. Best way to tell someone they've been poisoned EVER. But oh no, Nathan is home! Quick! Think up a cover story! HEART ATTACK! That'll do!
Haha, another link, this time back to when Moho had a slightly Indian accent. Those were the days.
Highlight of the episode: PETER HAD A PUPPY CALLED IZZY. And Nathan told him his daddy was in heaven with the dog. And Peter was sniffling forlornly, because he loved that dog.
Wait wait what the hell? So apparently at some point when Hiro was dreaming, Usutu just wandered out of the tent and HIS HEAD FLEW OFF. At first I was all "...D: HIS HEAD BLEW UP." Then I was all "D: D: HIS HEAD GOT WHACKED OFF." This was followed by an entirely surreal moment in which I thought that the head was going to start moving, look up and glare at the camera, but for some reason this did not come to pass.
What the hell. When did Arthur go to Africa? How did he know that Hiro was going to be there and how did he know what the guy was going to be caught red-handed doing? And Hiro, if there was ever an appropriate point at which to stop freakin' time, this was it. O_o
Well, that was... that was... that certainly was. |
