The Saga of the Screwing Over [Aug. 5th, 2006|10:23 am]

The local newsagent was looking for a holiday worker. I was looking for a holiday job. It seemed like a match made in heaven.

Nine days later, I'm out of a job.

It seemed strange from the very beginning, when the "interview" consisted entirely of asking if I was 16 and then telling me I'd got the job, starting the very next day. Well, it was very abrupt, but I was just glad to be working again as I hadn't had a regular job for a while. While I was working I noticed that the other two people there, the ones whose father owned it (I think), just kind of stood there and occasionally made ice-creams or whatever, or moved boxes around.

I'd been told I'd be working 2 hours a day, Monday to Saturday, but that first Monday, I was told at the very last minute via my mum that I wouldn't be wanted that day. Whaa...? Now that was annoying. But obviously, I couldn't force them to employ me, and as I was new mum advised me to keep my head down.

Then, yesterday, I arrived at work to see a sign on the door announcing that they'd be closing for two hours at lunch, throughout the summer holidays, starting that day. Had I been told about this? Had I Hell. My work for that day, and therefore my wages, was cut in half, and I was told not to come back when they re-opened. I asked if I should come back early today, and was told I'd be phoned to discuss it.

The call never came, so I went in early today to ask if they wanted me to do my two hours, or if I should come in at my usual time, and to discuss possible new hours face-to-face. I was told that business was quiet, so they didn't need me any more, but that they might phone me in September if they needed me then.

Nuts to that, I'm going to try to get a job in Woolies or something. No wonder they couldn't get anybody to work at the newsagent. >.< Mum said to put it down to experience.
