In ur shop, fangirlin ur clocks. [Dec. 22nd, 2007|07:42 pm]

Things I did today:

1. Got the second half of mum's Christmas present, so's she'll have something to unwrap. ...So I have her present, and the arty bits for Pythzilla, and... that's it. Good lord, I am so behind with Christmas this year. XD

2. Developed a more coffin cough than the customers. Ahaha, I bet I put some people off buying cigarettes. "A hundred Rothmans, and twenty B&H superkings, please." "O--*COUGH*--kay, here *HACK* you *DEAD* go."

3. Frightened a horologist.

...what's that, you say? Frightened a horologist? O rlly?

To which I reply: ya rlly. See, I was driving home from school, and there was totally this antique watch shop that I had never seen before, and today I totally went in. :D :D :D And the guy was all "can I help you?" and I was all "this'll sound strange but can I just sort of fangirl your clocks?" (I am paraphrasing here, of course.) And he said yes, and he has pocket-watches under the counter, and, oddly, barometers (which, as he explained, have no mechanism besides some mercury in a pipe), and grandfather clocks, and carriage clocks, and there's a little room at the back of the shop with a big window that I looked through and SAW HIS TOOLS. And and and he had a movement in a clamp! And I was all "omg! you has a movement!" and he was all "yes, I'm repairing it".

And THEN. THEN. Some guy came in with a bigass stone (for realz) mantelpiece clock of some kind and he was all "you can ficks?" and Clock Man was all "yes, and btw from TWO SECONDS OF GLANCING I can tell that this is like eighteenth-century French, for this and this and this reason" and the guy was all "o rlly?" and Clock Man was all "ya rlly" and I was all "♥". And he might fix it, but it'd cost like three hundred pounds, which is what the clock's worth anyway (same movement in a wooden frame would be up to three times as much but there isn't so much demand for black marble frames because people think they're funereal), so they didn't decide right then whether or not to get it done. And also lots of clocks ticking together sound like a water garden. And also also the gems for minimum friction are more easy to get hold of than I'd assumed, because they're artificially made. But I digress. I asked if it was possible to take a movement out of one frame and put it in another, and he said no, they're all kind of individual to each other, so it wouldn't fit. And I was partly "♥ clockknowledge", and partly "o noes, throwaway Gabriel IC comment invalidated, woes", but mainly "♥ clockknowledge". And apparently he fixes clocks for a really famous author, whose name I forget because he is not a clockmaker whereas Clock Man is. And I got his card. And he said, when I asked, that I could indeed bring my friend in to look around. OMG, PYTH. DATE. :D?

In conclusion: clocks rock. Don't diss but respect.
