09:50 pm - Just another day... Sin had worked his fingers to the bone playing the piano at Papa Gumbo's, and all he wanted was a beer and to relax. It didn't seem that there was much rest for the wicked, however. Harmony had been working hard in her own endeavors, and being the good boyfriend that he was, he wanted to surprise her.
So, he went and picked up dinner from the local high end grocery, and then had hurried home to get it all hot. He had grabbed a lasagna and all the trimmings, and had it in the oven with bread sticks by the time expected her to be over. He was nervous, though he wasn't sure why. Maybe it was the shiny present in his pocket.

With all the budget cuts at the school every day she worked was now a long one. There were more responsibilities, more stress, and more things to do. Another day had passed and it was dark when she was leaving her classroom, back aching ever so slightly. There was an urge to just go home and nap, but something more important gave her energy and drew her to continue on. Sin. She was going to go see Sin. Idly she realized she spent more time at his place now than hers, except for sleeping. It was nice, to have someone to love and be close to.
But she still had manners, though she was his girlfriend. She knocked on his door. It was a Tuesday. Her night to bring beer and as she dutifully did every Tuesday, there was a six pack in her hand and a smile on her face.
Sin never got why Harmony didn't just let herself in. She had a key, and it deadbolt was unlocked.. None the less he was wearing a shark-smile when he answered the door, wearing a black t-shirt and his usual jeans. He pulled her into the room and then fully into his arms, simply hugging the girl for a few long moments.
Hugging and touching Harmony was a lovely thing, and Sin couldn't help but revel in it. In her scent, her texture.. the sound of her breath and the way it would fill her lungs. He was attuned to all these things.
"I missed you.." he whispered softly, his eyes seeking hers as long fingers stroked over her face and then back into her hair.
"I missed you more."
She sighed and fit her gaze to his, relaxing at his touch before turning her head ever so slightly so that she could kiss his palm. This was her favorite part of what was something of their ritual. He'd pull her close, she'd kiss his palm and they'd both stand there as though they were recharging themselves with the other's presence. That's how it was for her, at least; being away from him was a draining agony but every time she got close to him again everything was right in the world.
"You are the best part of my day. How are you, beautiful?"
"I'm sure you did.." he murmured softly, his smile taking on a bit more of an intimate sort of tinge. Unable to help himself, he pressed a kiss to her forehead and then pulled away some, his eyes never leaving her face.
"I got dinner ready." he said. "And I didn't even make it myself, so we know that it's edible." His cooking could be considered a joke - he burned everything. Sin lived on take out and oven bake-able things.
"I'm doing well enough, although I'm starting to need to find some time to write." he said as he pulled back towards the kitchen, taking her beer with him. He uncapped one for each of them and offered her an opened beer.
"I'm going to teach you to cook someday. I promise you. I have faith that you can do it well." She tiptoed up a bit to kiss his lips softly and then took the offered beer as she followed him to the kitchen.
"Yes, you need to write. I've noticed the distance and the longing in your eyes lately. Your eyes get a slightly different glow to them when you need to write. Is there anything that I can do to help you write?" A playful little smile crossed her lips. "I'm not above sitting nearby to play at muse."
Sin just gave Harmony a smirk and shrugged his shoulders. "I dunno.. I could use some musing in my life.." replied Sin as he sauntered over to Harmony and flopped onto the couch. If she didn't get her pretty butt down on the couch quickly enough, he would pull her down with him.
"Maybe you'll cook for me while I write? And spoil me with snuggles when I'm all crazy and skitzed out?" he asked softly, nuzzling at her hair.
She sat down in his lap and snuggled herself close to him. She fit so neatly there in his arms, so perfectly.
"I'm yours all night if you'll have me and there's no school tomorrow for a district meeting. If you'll let me, I'll stay all night and then be here all day taking care of you in every way you need."
Gently, she scratched the back of his neck lightly. He always liked that.
He did always like that. Sighing, Sin closed his eyes and murmured a low noise low in the back of his throat. He had been hoping she would offer to stay - he had beefed up his spells just in case.
"I was hoping that you might want to linger.." he then murmured, "I even changed my sheets.." Unable to help himself, he curled his arms around her frame and snuggled her up against his chest. "I think I actually have tomorrow off too.. we should be lazy. If i start writing I'll be up for two weeks."
"Well, we will have to sleep in for certain. There are very few things that I enjoy more than you and I together wrapped up in clean sheets that we are carefully making unclean." Harmony's voice grew softer as she allowed herself to be pulled tighter to his embrace. She pressed little kisses all along his jaw.
"I know you'll be up for two weeks. But do you know what that means?"
Snorting a bit in amusement, Sin just gave his head a shake as he said "I don't care what being up for two weeks means.. I'd rather not start writing, and spend the time making the sheets dirty with you.."
Grinning wickedly, the man leaned in and nipped at Harmon's neck quite playfully. He was in a good mood now that she was there.
"If you write though I will reward you for a job well done..." She moaned softly as he nipped at her neck and she stretched out, letting her head fall back a bit to expose the soft skin even more. "After you write, I'll feed you, then we'll dirty the sheets, and then I'll sing you a lullaby and hold you while you sleep."
"But I want that to all happen tonight and not two weeks from now.." whispered Sin as he looked into her face with a rather hungry grin. "What about... we do all that stuff and then I'll write after you go.. so you don't have to get ignored.." he offered.
"My darling it isn't an either or thing. I was going to sing to you after we were intimate tonight, and hold you as well if you'd let me." She smiled as she nuzzled her cheek to his, soft and innocent. "And just because you aren't paying attention to me doesn't mean I'm being ignored. Any time I'm in the room with you, I know you know I'm here."
"Yea.. you know I just don't like you worrying about me.." he said then softly, his expression turning earnest. Reaching out, he petted at her hair, smoothing some of it back with long fingers.
"Alright then." he finally conceded. "You win..."
Just about then, the alarm went off in the kitchen, and he lit up as he said "There's dinner..."
"I like when I win." She pressed a kiss to his lips and let it linger there a bit longer than just a simply innocent kiss before she slipped from his lap.
"After dinner, I'll do the dishes. Sound fair?"
"Alright.. alright.." he says, raising his hands up as he surrenders to Harmony's will. In many ways he didn't think he needed to be spoiled so - Harmony knew nothing of his past and his true history. Thankfully she didn't press too much.
He got up and followed her to the kitchen, and went about pulling dinner out and set it on the stove. "Voila!" he said.
The girl hugged him from behind, pressing her face against his back in the space that would, if she knew they were there, be right between his wings. Even with that lack of knowledge it was always a favorite place of hers, a place she'd often kiss.
"I love how you always try to do nice things for me. I love you for that and for so much more. You're too good to me."
Moving away from him, she got down plates and utensils, offering him first dibs at dinner.
The whole "I love you" speech actually made him flush a bit, and Sin scratched at the back of his neck awkwardly and smiled. "Uhm.. Thank you?" he then said softly before he reached out and looped a hand around Harmony and pulled her to him.
"I.. love you too." he then said with a soft seriousness.
The first night they'd met, they'd been together. It had defied everything she knew about herself and had ultimately set the tone for their relationship. Harmony should have known then that nothing was unexpected with Sin but even so his words caught her completely off guard. Had she not set the plate on the stove when he pulled her close to him she would have dropped it to the floor. Her chest to his she lifted her wide blue eyes to his.
"You...you said it." Her voice was barely above a whisper and she could feel tears--happy ones--stinging in her eyes. "You....love me?"
"Yea, well.. been long enough that you've been waiting." murmured the man, his expression still serious, though a smirk was pulling at his lips.
"You've.. taught me a lot." he then said. "I think that I've learned enough to say it with confidence."
She choked a little and the tears slipped down her cheeks in earnest as she threw her arms around his neck, hugging him perhaps more tightly than she ever had before.
"Oh Sin...you have no idea how happy you've made me. That you love me...it means you believe that I love you. You finally believe me. I love you, so much."
"It was never a question of you." he then said softly, happy to wrap his arms around her and hug her tight.
In times like this, he wished that he could really be himself. it stung that the person she loved wasn't really the man. Privately, Adrian hated it.. Harmony didn't even know his real name.
"... Adrian." he then said softly. "My name is Adrian.."
Harmony gently unfurled herself from his arms and pulled back, her hands still woven into his though, tightly touching him as though disconnect from him caused her pain (in a sense, it did.)
"Adrian." As she said his name her voice, already silvery and musical, took on a richness and a depth that he would never have heard before. There was something private in the darkness there, as though she were whispering even with speaking aloud--a treasure held in the space around her.
"Adrian." She said it again and smiled, kissing his palms. "I love you, Adrian. My Adrian."
Her eyes were wide and lit up. Harmony seemed to glow from within, entirely accepting of him. She was so patient with him, never pushing. It blew her away that now he was letting her in.
"My Adrian. Now I see your heart."
"Not all of it. But some." he then says softly before he can stop himself. Adrian tried to not say too much, but right now it was hard; she was just so innocent and kind and good and... no. He had to be strong for her. He had to protect her from what he was.
"So.. uhm.. Hi." he then said lamely, not sure really what else to say to her. Suddenly all his words seemed to be gone, and Latin was about to babble past his lips.
"Not all?" Her big wide eyes kept looking into his, patient and curious. "Do you think that...someday, maybe...you'll let me see it all?"
She tiptoed up and kissed him softly, preventing Latin from spewing forth, though she wouldn't have minded if he'd slipped into a dead language. Latin was a language of music, after all.
"I want to show you everything I am and know everything you are. This is how much I love you."
"I know.. I just.." he murmured, gripping her tight - so tight that he had to remind himself to be more gentle. He sighs then and turns away, his expression dark as he says "I'll tell you.. when I can. But I can't right now." he then says lamely. It sounds like a bunch of excuses to his ears.
He knew that she would probably understand if he did tell her, but it was for her own good.. really. Plus he was afraid, afraid that she would run screaming when she saw what he truly was.
He didn't expect anyone to love the monster that he was. Not even Harmony.
When he turned away from her, she felt fear. It bit at her core and flushed through her body as sick warmth.
"Promise me you'll let me in someday, Adrian? I'll wait forever if I have to."
Her voice was timid. Nothing terrified Harmony more than being shut out from him.
The man gave a huff and then turned towards the girl. He couldn't take the sorrow in her tone, and so reached out to draw her into his arms again.
"I will.. when I know that it's safe for you to know. I promise." he then said softly into her hair, meaning every word. He just didn't know if she'd ever be safe enough to know..
Refuge. As soon as his arms opened to her she fled into them and though they were standing she seemed to curl to his chest, pressing tight to his heart. Her whole body relaxed, the fear in her voice vanishing as quickly as it came.
"I'm with you. I'm always safe." Her face lifted to his and she smiled widely before she snuggled into him again.
"Adrian Adrian Adrian Adrian. Adrian Varias, there is nothing you can't tell me. I promise."
She wasn't pushing. She was reassuring. Sometimes she had to tell him everything would be okay thousands of times before it was, but she said it anyway hoping someday her words would stick.
"Maybe you're right.." he said softly, finding her chanting of his name somehow.. soothing. She didn't know his full name - not yet anyways - and so she could say "Adrian" all she wanted and it had little effect. He was amazed to see what joy knowing his name brought her.
"Wanna try and eat some dinner?" he then asked softly, his tone gentle. "And.. I can't protect you from everything.. not always. There are bigger monsters than me that go bump in the night."
"Yes. We should eat before it gets cold. You get grumpy when we have to reheat things." She stole a kiss before pulling away to put food on his plate. He often came first to her and she was glad for it. Taking care of him made her happy and it wasn't as though he didn't do the same for her. He was, at times, overprotective. The thought made her laugh a little, given his comment.
"I'm not afraid of bigger monsters. Do you want to know why?"
Adrian could help but roll his eyes some, his lips smirking as he said "Uhm.. let me guess.. Because you got me? Right?"
He then laughed softly and poked at her belly, his tone light as he said "What if I'm some big tentacle monster? Would you still say that while I violated all your clefts with my tentacles of doom?"
"No, not because I have you. I'm not afraid because little by little since I've met you I've gotten more brave. Knowing you has encouraged me and even if we didn't love each other, even if there had been nothing more than that first night I think I'd have my confidence growing just from that experience."
She laughed when he poked her belly, a soft giggle.
"Ah but I already beg you to violate my clefts, do I not? You and your vicious smile and hungry fingers. I plead for it some nights. Tentacles of doom are really just all the more to love. You'd still want me if I were a tentacle monster, no?"
"I dunno..." replied Adrian then, his expression playful. He was messing with her, but at least it was all in good fun. He then sighed out a deep breath, taking on a guilty expression.
"That's the thing, Harmony.. You are what you are and.. you don't hold that back. And I have to.. to protect you. It's just not fair." he says softly.
She frowned a little.
"I'm more than what I am, though. I...I'm a mutant. I know I haven't said anything about it, but I also know you've noticed." She blushed a little, thinking about the time all of the lightbulbs in his apartment shattered as they made love. "I hold that back. My secret thing. Well. I suppose not so secret since I've shared it with you. I worry sometimes, though. There are people who do not like mutants. What if someone figured me out and tried to harm you?" She shook her head. "Keeping you safe is as much my job as you keeping me safe is yours, Tentacle Monster."
New nickname? Maybe.
"They can't hurt me." he said with a sort of confidence that comes from the knowledge of having done something over and over again. it's only half right, but in the end the truth. There is nothing in Heaven of Hell or on Earth that he had run into yet that could put him down for more than a few minuets.
Clearing his throat a bit, he draws in a breath and then says softly "Harmony.. I'm not.. normal.. either and really it doesn't matter to me. I don't understand the stigma.. people are people to me, y'know?"
"I know. And you live like that. I've never seen you regard anyone as less than another. Even I'm not that benevolent sometimes." She moves with him to the small table and sits down.
"How are you not normal, Adrian?" She couldn't help but smile as she said his name. It was so beautiful, the way it felt as her lips formed the word. "Other than your eyes...you have the most striking eyes. And sometimes, when you move, it's like you're only wearing a human skin. Like there's something more beautiful underneath."
Adrian thinks for a moment before he reached out to grab a big kitchen knife. It was kind of creepy how he rather calmly stabbed the thing into his own forearm while never looking away from her face.
He doesn't even bleed.
"They can't hurt me." he then repeats, before he has to rather forcibly yank the knife out. The blood that drops onto the counter isn't red either but more.. blue. Only a few droplets fall from the wound because it's sealing up too quickly to let any flow. He holds his arm up, letting her watch as the wounds on either side of his flesh knit and regrow.
"Adrian...no!"
It happens so quickly, the chef's knife in his hand, the eerie look in his eyes and the swift movement of his hand forcing the blade into his arm. She screamed, surprised and stunned and not understanding what was happening. On her feet in an instant, dinner forgotten, she rushes to his side.
"Why did you do that...why..." but her concern is quickly shut off. Blue. For a moment, she finds herself marvelling about the few tiny drops of blue blood spattered on the counter top. It doesn't register in her head that there should be more for a moment but when it does, she grabs his arm. Beneath her fingertips, she can feel the wound heal.
"You...you're healing. You didn't even flinch..."
There's not even a mark and she stares at his arm.
"What are you?" She whispers the words, staring at his arm, running her thumb over the vanished wound as though she's touching something holy.
To her, she is. |
